Most advice for learning to ride a bike boils down to: "keep peddling" and "don't let go". Both cries can be heard throughout parks in Britain as fathers and mothers grasp the saddle of their wobbling offspring.

Police, it would appear, need rather more advice. But do they really need need 93 pages worth of cycling guidance, in two volumes?

Police reading the Police Cycle Training Doctrine – apparently drawn up by a group of "well-meaning officers" at a cost of thousands of pounds – will benefit from guidance on how to brake and turn corners, as well as avoid obstacles such as kerbs. Prospective police bike-riders are sagely advised to wear padded shorts "for in-saddle comfort" and reminded to eat and drink enough. Cyclists can get thirsty after all.

The Sun claims the document was drawn up by the Association of Chief Police Officers, although the association today said the guide – which appears to display the Acpo crest on its front page – was produced independently by a group of safety conscious officers.

"This work was neither requested nor drawn up by Acpo and we do not endorse it," said a spokeswoman. "It was put forward by a group of well-meaning police officers with an interest in this area. Acpo will not be taking it forward."

The booklet also contains pictoral guides to aid the novice rider, including one diagram depicting the correct way to turn a corner, and offers instruction on how to dismount a bicycle safely. Police are advised of the need to "rear scan" — look over their shoulder — and warned not to attempt to apprehend suspects while still "engaged with the cycle".

London mayor Boris Johnson – who recently gave chase to three would-be muggers on his bicycle – today suggested too much money had been spent on the guide.

"I am sure it is of great value, I haven't seen it, but I think you can do this kind of thing much, much more cheaply," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. Johnson also offered some of his own advice on cycling at a busy junction – free of charge.

"Get to the front," he said. "Too many cyclists in London do not get to the front, they lurk at the back and are under the lee of lorries and buses and they are at much greater risk than if they go and assert their prerogatives and get to the front."

The mayor said he was considering the idea of allowing cyclists to turn left at red lights in an attempt to cut casualties as more people take to two wheels.

Why do people gush over Proust?

If you haven't read Proust, don't worry. This lacuna in your cultural development you do not need to fill. On the other hand, if you have read all of A la Recherche du Temps Perdu, you should be very worried about yourself. As Proust very well knew, reading his work for as long as it takes is temps perdu, time wasted, time that would be better spent visiting a demented relative, meditating, walking the dog or learning ancient Greek.

In Search of Lost Time, or Remembrance of Things Past, as Proust's "novel" is variously titled in English, is widely touted as one of the favourite books of the 20th century, second only to The Lord of the Rings. Fans of Tolkien can certainly handle a marathon read, as can Harry Potter addicts; but whether they have stayed the distance with Proust seems to me highly doubtful.

ALRDTP is not so much a book as an armful of books. No bookshop can be relied upon to have all the volumes in stock at any one time. The cost of the whole work is likely to be prohibitive – unless you can read it in French, in the one-volume paperback edition of the text established by the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade over five years from 1987. This is a helluva read, being 2,408 pages, 1.25m words, and so heavy that you can't read it in bed let alone in the bath (if you can read it at all, with its crowded, narrow typeface and tiny margins).

This cannot be called the definitive text because, when Proust died in 1922, the last three volumes existed only in typescript, festooned with pasted-in interpolations and additions that Proust's literary executors tried to make sense of; they moved some, ignored others, all the while erasing repetitions and inconsistencies in the belief that Proust would have done as much if he had had the time. Recent editors have restored this momentarily inert mass once more to chaos. Ulysses, too, is an editor's nightmare, and ALRDTP should not be damned solely on that account. But it is damnable in its fake heterosexual voyeurism, and its disparaging and dishonest account of homosexuality.

People who gush over Proust say peculiar things about him. The Observer's Robert McCrum thinks he "redefined the terms of fiction", whatever they may be. Proust would have been surprised to be told he had defined anything. In a momentary lapse into barbarism, Nabokov, himself a consummate stylist, described Proust's prose as "translucid". If Proust did not make such a snobbish to-do about diction, it might be easier to forgive him for his battering of the sentence to rubble and his apparent contempt for the paragraph. He relies on commas and semi-colons to do what should be done by full-stops, of which there are far too few, many of them in the wrong place. Sentences run to thousands of words and scores of subordinate clauses, until the reader has no recollection of the main clause or indeed whether there ever was one.

Until almost the end of the century, CK Scott Moncrieff's was the only English translation. It contained all kinds of howlers, which were tinkered with by various publishers to be presented eventually to the anglophone public as two different translations with separate copyrights. Then Penguin embarked on a genuinely new translation by assorted academics under the general editorship of Christopher Prendergast. This was generally well received, with one desperate reviewer even imagining that it had captured the "cadence" of Proust's French.

Supposing you struggle on as far as the fifth volume, which Scott Moncrieff called The Captive, you will find the following: "Tirant d'un flûtiau, d'une cornemuse, des airs de son pays méridional, dont la lumière s'accordait bien avec les beaux jours, un homme en blouse, tenant à la main un nerf de boeuf, et coiffé d'un béret basque, s'arrêtait devant les maisons." This Scott Moncrieff hilariously renders as: "Drawing from a penny whistle, from a bagpipe, airs of his own southern country whose sunlight harmonised well with these fine days, a man in a blouse, wielding a bull's pizzle in his hand and wearing a Basque beret on his head, stopped before each house in turn." In Carol Clark's version for Penguin we read: "Drawing from a penny-whistle or bagpipes melodies from his southern homeland, whose light the fine morning recalled, a man in a smock with a bludgeon in his hand, and wearing a beret, stopped in front of the houses."

The translators' manifest difficulties stem at first from Proust's own imprecision, and are then compounded by their ignorance. The Pyrenean goatherd carried neither a dried bull's penis nor a bludgeon – what would he be doing with either? He is going to milk his goats and he needs something with which to restrain them: a hobble made of dried bull sinew. But when all is said and done, Scott Moncrieff remains the pleasanter read. Once it is understood that all translation is mistranslation, we are free to realise that Scott Moncrieff (Proust's contemporary) keeps us reading at the right pace and rhythm. Besides, he has no hesitation in using French words that we all understand, while Penguin insists on translating a "concierge" as a "portress", if you please.

J’ai tourné durant bien deux ans autour de cette phrase en me demandant ce qu’elle voulait dire, mais avec la conviction qu’in fine, j’allais dénouer le fil et comprendre ce qu’Hannah Arendt a voulu m’expliquer.

J’ai résolu l’énigme par hasard, et c’est d’ailleurs toujours comme ça que les choses se passent. Quand vous avez un besoin urgent de mettre la main sur votre pièce d’identité, vous retournez la maison, vous ne trouvez pas, vous renoncer, vous enfilez votre veste pour aller prendre l’air dans le souci d’éviter la crise de nerf, et c’est alors qu’en glissant machinalement vos doigts dans la poche revolver, vous constatez qu’elle est là.

J’ai donc compris Marinette à un instant où je ne pensais ni à elle ni à sa phrase (dans mon intimité, Hannah Arendt s’appelle Marinette, parce qu’à l’instar du vieux Prévert qui disait tu à ceux qui l’aimaient, l’affection, chez moi, s’accompagne toujours de moqueries et de familiarités qui signifient aux élus qu’ils on le droit d’entrer).

C’était en lisant le récit du G7 de l’année 1984 qui s’est tenu à Versailles et dont les réunions entre les puissants de ce monde avaient lieu dans la galerie de glaces.

Rien que ça…Autant de magnificence pour une si petite époque….Caramba, aussi peu de mèche pour autant de dynamite, comme dit la mexicaine, quand elle se retrouve à l’hôtel avec le culturiste qui l’a dragué toute la soirée, au moment où il enlève enfin son slip.

Au cours de la réunion de clôture, le président Mitterrand a proposé à ses homologues le projet mirifique que lui avait soufflé son conseiller Jacques Attali, soit la création d’un organisme international destiné à prévoir les découvertes scientifiques futures et de permettre à la communauté internationale de les contrôler. C’est alors que le Président Ronald Reagan a brandi son stylo bic à la face du Mitteran le Socialan et lui a fait savoir que de telles sornettes avaient traversé des têtes d’oeufs aux USA dans les années 1930, que pire, ils avaient obtenu du pognon pour monter l’usine à gaz de leurs rêves, mais que las, ils n’avaient anticipé ni l’invention des avions à réaction, ni celle des ordinateurs portables, et même pas celle du stylo à bic que le grand président américain agitait sous les yeux du petit Président français, pour qu’il comprenne.

Selon le verbatim de la réunion, la grande Margaret Thatcher a gloussé comme si on venait de lui raconter l’histoire de Toto qui en a trois dans le slip, et le petit Président français, comme à son habitude, s’est livré à son imitation favorite, celle de la statue de marbre contrariée qui fait tourner ses yeux de poule à toute vitesse dans leurs orbites pour faire savoir qu’elle n’est pas contente…C’est tordant au music-hall, quand on est bourré et qu’on est monté à Paris pour vendre une vache, mais je crois que si le peuple de France a pu applaudir ce numéro de clown pendant quatorze ans, c’est qu’il est proche du couchant…

Le plus drôle dans l’affaire, c’est que pour se venger d’Attali et lui faire passer l’envie de lui refouler ses idées de zozo, Mitterrand l’a obligé à se joindre à ses parties de golf hebdomadaires, alors que l’autre sait à peine se torcher le cul et serait bien en peine de faire monter une vinaigrette. Contraint et forcé par le prince, le zozo envoyait la balle dans la gueule d’un obligé avec son club, le successeur de Louis XIV et de Napoléon faisait mine de tenir une explosion de colère du bout des doigts, lâchait un laconique “qu’est-ce qu’on va faire de vous mon ami”, la cour éclatait de rire, et le vieux était content.

Par ces quelques mots, Hannah Arendt montre avec son doigt le plus grand piège que le Diable nous tend ces jours: elle nous fait savoir que si les écologistes et les décroissants monopolisent les perchoirs en nous parlant de la finitude des matières premières ou des limites auxquelles le génie de l’Homme va forcément finir pas se heurter et s’lls donnent l’impression de nous enjoindre à la modestie, leur doxa est d’essence prométhéenne.

Les rêves qui motivent Nicolas Hulot et ceux qui applaudissent, ce sont des fantasmes de toute puissance, de surhomme capables de prévoir en 1930 que leurs petits-enfants accoucheraient des avions à réactions et des ordinateurs portables.

La liberté contre un plat de lentilles, une apparence de souveraineté, une heure pour poser ce sac d’incertitudes dont le Christ nous a dit que le poser parterre, ce serait pécher. et même commettre le pire de tous les péchés.

Ni plus ni moins.

Si votre curé vous donne une autre version, c’est que vous avez en face de vous un menteur.

Balladur de plus en plus sévère avec Sarkozy

Je ne sais pas pour vous, mais j'ai une certaine tendresse envers Edouard Balladur. Il aime Proust, il est aimable et onctueux, avec toutefois un petit côté cassant - j'ai tenté de le faire parler des "affaires" et de Jacques Chirac, mardi, pour une interview à paraître dans Le Temps, et il m'a intimé l'ordre de parler d'autre chose, sur le ton de son mythique "je vous demande de vous arrêter".

Sur le fond, on sent Balladur mal à l'aise face au tournant volontariste et dépensier de son poulain Sarkozy. "Je trouve que l'apologie de l'Etat à laquelle se livrent certains en France et à l'étranger, y compris dans l'entourage du président de la République, tout à fait excessive", m'a dit l'ancien premier ministre en m'autorisant à le citer "expressis verbis".

Les réserves balladuriennes sont importantes. Elles signifient qu'à un moment donné, avant 2012, Nicolas Sarkozy va devoir faire un choix entre son enthousiame pour le volontarisme économique, prôné par son conseiller Henri Guaino et financé à coup de milliards (de dettes), et le rigorisme de personnages comme Balladur ou Fillon. En d'autres termes, il y aura un moment de vérité. On se réjouit de voir comme le président négociera, dans ses discours et dans ses actes, ce nouveau virage.

Former lord chancellor says Tony Blair acted in 'insensitive, high-handed and incoherent' manner in deciding to abolish post

The former lord chancellor Derry Irvine has broken a six-year silence to reveal a row with Tony Blair over the abolition of the historic role, which saw Irvine sacked from the cabinet.

In a submission to a House of Lords committee, Irvine describes Blair as "insensitive, high-handed and incoherent" in deciding to abolish the post of lord chancellor and accuses him of "snubbing" the Queen by failing to consult her on the move.

He said he had gone public about the disagreement that ended his government career in June 2003 to "ensure the accuracy of the public record".

Irvine had enjoyed a very close relationship with Blair, whom he taught as a young barrister and introduced to his wife, Cherie, but Irvine's nine-page submission reveals a gradual souring of the friendship.

Relations between the two men had sunk to such a low level that the prime minister went "behind his back" to appoint another of his old friends, Lord Falconer, to Irvine's cabinet post, Irvine said.

According to the submission, Irvine found out that the office of lord chancellor was to be abolished and the job transferred to a secretary of state in the Commons just days before it happened.

In the ensuing confrontation with Blair, Irvine writes, "I asked him how a decision of this magnitude could be made without prior consultation with me, the judiciary … and the palace. The prime minister appeared mystified and said that these changes always had to be carried into effect in a way that precluded such discussion because of the risk of leaks.

"I was surprised he thought the abolition of the office of lord chancellor was of the same order as any machinery of government changes."

Irvine said a second meeting with the prime minister illustrated to him that Blair had not received advice and was "completely unaware that complex primary legislation was required".

Irvine reports that he unsuccessfully pleaded with Blair to keep him on: "I personally am being cast aside. I am being ejected – and all this for no proven benefit arising out of the abolition of the office. This should be done in a seemly, measured and balanced way, instead of the incoherent, unworked up and piecemeal approach."

Juvenile Life Sentences

Oral arguments in Graham v. Florida and Smith v. Florida are scheduled for November 9. The issue of life sentences for juvenile offenders is getting attention in anticipation of the Supreme Court's examination.

Former Republican U.S. Senator Alan Simpson wrote the OpEd, "A sentence too cruel for children." It appeared in the Friday Washington Post.

Rather than serving in the U.S. Senate for almost 20 years, or having so many other wonderful life experiences, I could have served a longer sentence in prison for some of the stupid, reckless things I did as a teenager. I am grateful to have gotten a second chance -- and I believe our society should make a sustained investment in offering second chances to our youth.
When I was a teen, we rode aimlessly around town, shot things up, started fires and generally raised hell. It was only dumb luck that we never really hurt anyone. At 17, I was caught destroying federal property and was put on probation. For two years, my probation officer visited me and my friends at home, in the pool hall, at school and on the basketball court. He was a wonderful guy who listened and really cared. I did pretty well on probation. At 21, though, I got into a fight in a tough part of town and ended up in jail for hitting a police officer.
I spent only one night in jail, but that was enough. I remember thinking, "I don't need too much more of this."
I had a chance to turn my life around, and I took it. This term, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether other young people get that same chance.
On Nov. 9, the court will hold oral argument in Sullivan v. Florida and Graham v. Florida, two cases that will determine whether it is constitutional to sentence a teenager to life in prison without parole for a crime that did not involve the taking of a life. There is a simple reason the criminal justice system should treat juveniles and adults differently: Kids are a helluva lot dumber than adults. They do stupid things -- as I did -- and some even commit serious crimes, but youths don't really ever think through the consequences. It's for this reason that every state restricts children from such consequential actions as voting, serving on juries, purchasing alcohol or marrying without parental consent.
The Supreme Court recognized the differences between teenagers and adults when it held a few years ago, in Roper v. Simmons, that it was unconstitutional to impose the death penalty on defendants younger than 18. Locking up a youth for the rest of his life, with no hope for parole, is surely unconstitutional for the same reasons. The person you are at 13 or 17 is not the person you are at 30, 40 or 50. Everyone old enough to look back on his or her teenage years knows this.

At 17 I was captain of my high-school football team and on my way to college. But in November 1992 I went to a birthday party with friends. We were tussling around, and the chaperones threw us out. One of them knocked me to the ground, and I felt ashamed and angry. My friend had a gun in his car. I got it, came back, and fired three shots, killing one of the chaperones. I was convicted of murder and given 10 to 25 years in prison.
I grew up in an area known for gun violence and drugs. Like a lot of boys, I looked up to tough men who could fight and had been in prison. My first arrest came when I was 12: I stole my grandmother's gun and took it to school. At 14 I was sent to a boys' home. I studied hard and won a full scholarship to attend the University of Detroit high school. I excelled there, but my thinking was twisted. I didn't know how to manage my anger. As a result, a man lost his life the night of that party.
On the day I was to begin Marygrove College, I started a prison term instead. I was 18 and had hope: I could be paroled when I was still a relatively young man. I spent six of my 12 years in prison in solitary confinement. I promised myself I would read 1,000 books. I read 1,300. I became certified as a carpenter, plumber, electrician, and paralegal.
I was released from prison in 2004 after my third parole hearing. I received bachelor's and master's degrees from University of Detroit Mercy. I started a motivational-speaking and fitness-training company. As a community-reintegration coordinator, I help other ex-offenders start anew. I'm proof that people, especially teens, can't be judged by the worst thing they ever did.

Fallait-il s'y attendre, voilà que la presse et nos bons ministres fanfaronnent et glosent de concert sur ce que la France, sans doute poussée par ses forces vives, va de l'avant dans la bataille économique.

Arrière, sceptiques, car c'est qu'on a des chiffres ! 56 548 créations d'entreprises en septembre ! 425 769 depuis le début de l'année ! Et même, voilà déjà qu'on nous certifie via l'incomparable Hervé Novelli que "l'objectif de 500 000 créations d'entreprise en 2009 sera largement dépassé". Qui oserait dire mieux?

Et qui oserait, surtout, aller chercher le ver qui est au coeur du fruit, soit cet autre chiffre : 54% des dites entreprises crées depuis Janvier l'ont été sous statut d'autoentreprise. Cette bonne blague ! L'autoentreprise, ou l'illusion mesquine de parvenir... Vous connaissiez les joies de l'interim, les soleils se couchant sur le salarié-aventurier libre de ses vas et viens dans la jungle économique ... Lui a-t-on désormais accolé une médaille en chocolat, poussant la logique jusque au bout qui veut que chaque individu soit un petit entrepreneur avec un capital à vendre, à négocier.

Je, tu, il, nous sommes tous des chefs d'entreprises, à nous de proposer sur le divin marché qui notre force de travail, qui notre savoir-faire.

Sublime tour de force, quand on y pense, magie de la novlangue qui vous transforme en un claquement de doigts de pauvres ères précaires, sautillant de jobs merdiques en missions bidons, en de respectables petits patrons ayant affaires à mener. Vous qui savez poser du placo-plâtre, du carrelage, dire la messe en chinois ou marcher sur les mains, vos compétences valent de l'or : oubliez l'archaïsme du salariat, ses rigueurs et son poids, volez comme une plume vers les cieux d'une économie atomique.

Et à nous, bientôt, l'Icarie d'une concurrence libre et non faussée sur le marché du travail, à nous ses cinq commandements : atomicité; homogénéité des produits; transparence de l'information; libre entrée et sortie du marché; libre circulation des acteurs de production. Qu'il est beau, qu'il chante, sous pareils auspices, le dessein du travailleur... On ne vous dira pas que la plupart vivotent, touchent le RSA, on vous hurlera que des entreprises se créent.

On ne vous dira pas que le lendemain de l'intérimaire zigzaguant à vue entre missions au Super-U de Sympa-sur-Loire et jobs à la petite semaine est l'autoentreprise, très commode à y bien regarder pour les entrepreneurs, les vrais, qui n'ont plus désormais à s'encombrer des lourdeurs du droit salarial. Je ne fais plus appel ni à l'interim, ni aux CDD, je sous-traite ! Monsieur Tartignon n'est plus mon ankylosant employé, il est mon partenaire économique, et que d'avantages : il ne compte plus ses heures, je n'ai aucun compte à lui rendre, peux décider de me passer de ses services quand bon me semble sans m'acquitter de la moindre indemnité.

En somme, une véritable abolition du droit du travail célébrée partout comme la dynamique nouvelle, l'exemple à suivre de ces gens qui font bouger la France.

Et on oubliera bien sûr de dire que seulement quatre autoentrepreneurs sur six ont réalisé un chiffre d'affaire depuis le mois de Mars, et que, le cas échéant, ce dernier est généralement plus proche de la queue de cerise que du gros milliard.

A ce stade de l'histoire, le doute n'est plus possible : la relance est en route, on va de l'avant, dans le bon sens.

Ce qui, somme toute, est assez formidable.

Prison for man who let toddler smoke

Mobile phone footage shows 31-year-old joking and laughing as child inhales

A man who allowed a three-year-old girl to smoke cigarettes was today jailed for 18 months.

In mobile phone footage taken by a 14-year-old girl, Graeme Conroy, 31, is seen handing the lit cigarette to the child and encouraging her to inhale.

Conroy was caught when a neighbour became aware of the video and told police, Newcastle crown court heard.

In the video, Conroy can be heard joking and guffawing with laughter. A 16-year-old witness told police what Conroy did at a house in Wardley, Gateshead, on 24 February this year. "He said 'watch this'. She [the girl] like had a tab. We thought it was funny at first and he said 'video it'.

"She had finished it and put it out in the ashtray. The girl asked for another one and he said 'you've had enough' and she started crying so he gave her another one."

"She was inhaling and everything. It looked like she had smoked before. She was inhaling it and she knew what to do.

"Graeme didn't tell her what to do. She just knew what to do."

Tony Glover, prosecuting, said: "The essence of the offence is that he encouraged this child to smoke. He admitted giving a child a cigarette. He said he knew it was wrong and knew he shouldn't have done it."

Glover said the girl had smoked two cigarettes before the teenage witness had arrived and was seen to have smoked another three.

Jane Foley, defending, said: "His behaviour was irresponsible and he clearly didn't give sufficient thought to what he was doing, believing it to be a bit of a joke. Clearly it's not funny. To anyone hearing the circumstances of the offence they would be appalled to hear that a three-year-old girl was permitted to smoke this cigarette. He has accepted his responsibility at the earliest opportunity."

Conroy, of Ashington, Northumberland, admitted wilfully ill-treating, neglecting or exposing a child in a manner likely to cause suffering or injury to health.

Judge David Wood, sentencing Conroy, said: "You evidently thought it would be funny if she was allowed to smoke cigarettes and you could take a video of what was going on.

"I expect you realise now this was not funny at all. This sort of conduct could be very damaging to a child's health and could have all sorts of effects upon her future health. You have completely disregarded her safety and endangered her."

Pour Spotify, l’idée d’un succès instantané est dangereuse et fausse

Dans un billet d’une candeur stupéfiante, le cofondateur de Spotify, Daniel Ek, partage la vision qu’il a de la situation actuelle du service de streaming en ligne et de son avenir. Le but principal de son billet semble avant tout de faire une mise au point sur le fait que même si Spotify est depuis peu devenu une startup iconique dans l’univers de la musique, elle est encore loin d’avoir un modèle de revenu stable. C’est cependant bien son but : toujours selon Daniel Ek, les fondateurs de Spotify se sont embarqués dans une longue aventure et n’ont nullement l’intention de vendre leur entreprise en cours de route. Mais la société est loin de générer des revenus et doit encore se battre contre des coûts de licences exorbitants exigés par l’industrie de la musique, sans pour autant rencontrer de succès significatif avec leur modèle gratuit financé par la publicité.

Ne vous attendez pas à un succès du jour au lendemain

Selon Daniel Ek, l’idée d’un succès rapide est fausse et dangereuse, car elle nourri l’espoir d’un possible avenir pour la musique en stream. Il en appelle à la raison auprès de l’industrie musicale qui s’attend à voir un modèle économique validé dans les mois qui suivent un lancement. “Ce n’est pas comme cela que ça marche”, insiste-t-il, rappelant que iTunes n’était pas, au départ, la machine à cash qu’elle est aujourd’hui, et que durant sa première année, la boutique d’Apple avait raté son objectif de chiffre d’affaire de 30% alors que la plupart des responsables de label prévoyaient sa disparition. Bien que Daniel Ek réalise à quel point la comparaison entre iTunes et Spotify est limitée étant donnée leurs modèles économiques très différents, son point reste cependant valable : le succès n’arrive pas du jour au lendemain. Spotify, qui est très populaire en Europe, finalise les signatures de contrats qui lui permettront de se lancer sur le territoire américain. Ceci dit, au stade où en est le produit, il lui reste encore beaucoup de chemin à parcourir tant en terme d’offre que de monétisation. Daniel Ek reconnait que l’acte d’achat — le fait d’acheter un single à l’écoute — est loin d’être évident : 80% des utilisateurs de Spotify ignorent que l’application leur offre cette possibilité, ce qui n’empêche pas Spotify d’être un très gros vendeur. Une ressource inexploitée, donc. L’autre grand défit que doit affronter Spotify est la course à la rentabilité car le coût des licences, en particulier pour les modèles économiques sous tendant la diffusion gratuite financée par la publicité, est totalement prohibitif. Last.fm a par exemple supprimé ses formules gratuites pour ces même raisons.

L’industrie de la musique doit changer

Pour le cofondateur de Spotify, l’industrie de la musique doit changer d’attitude et affronter son avenir plutôt que se battre contre lui. Pour renouer avec le succès, cette industrie doit réaliser que les nouveaux modèles de revenus sont “un mix entre la publicité, le téléchargement, les abonnements, la vente de billets” et où la clé du succès viendra “d’un packaging approprié des droits d’accès et de la portabilité de ceux-ci”. Si elle est prêt à s’adapter, l’industrie pourrait générer jusqu’à 40 à 50 milliard de dollars et devenir plus puissante qu’elle ne l’a jamais été, mais d’ici là, il reste du chemin à parcourir pour Spotify, ainsi que pour l’ensemble des startups de la musique en stream qui doivent avant tout affronter l’obscurantisme des détenteurs de droits, persuadés qu’il peuvent arrêter le temps et revenir à l’âge du vinyl avec l’aide de quelques politiciens, tout autant décidés à arrêter le temps.
