Description: <i>Tamil Nadu’s Tuition Support for Muslim Women Triggers Equality Debate

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that it will cover undergraduate tuition fees for eligible Muslim women admitted through the government quota, prompting debate over whether publicly funded education benefits should be based on religion.

The measure was announced by Minorities Welfare Minister A.M. Shahjahan while presenting his department’s demands for grants in the state Assembly. It applies to government, government-aided and self-financing institutions offering courses in arts and science, engineering, medicine, agriculture and law.

An initial allocation of approximately ₹20 crore has reportedly been provided. The announcement does not mean every Muslim girl will automatically receive completely free education. It specifically covers tuition for eligible undergraduate students admitted under the government quota. Accommodation, transport, books and other expenses may remain outside the programme.

The government also extended a Tamil Nadu Wakf Board scholarship for Muslim girls from Classes 1–8 to Classes 9 and 10. The annual assistance of ₹2,000 is expected to benefit about 41,384 students, at a projected cost of ₹8.28 crore.

Supporters say Muslim women can face overlapping economic, educational and social disadvantages, making targeted assistance necessary to prevent dropouts and improve participation in higher education.

Some Hindu social-media users and political commentators have questioned why comparable tuition support was not announced for financially disadvantaged women from every religious community. Critics have described the policy as selective welfare or political appeasement.

However, it would be inaccurate to claim that “Hindus” collectively oppose the programme. Online reactions do not represent an entire religious community.

India’s constitutional framework permits governments to introduce targeted welfare measures for women and socially or educationally disadvantaged groups. Whether the precise eligibility rules are legally vulnerable would depend on the final government order, its stated objectives and supporting data. No court has struck down this newly announced scheme.

Description: <i>The Indian Air Force has never inducted a US-built fighter jet.

The distinction has attracted renewed attention following reports about possible F-35 sales and India’s continuing search for advanced combat aircraft.

Historically, India depended heavily on Soviet aircraft because the United States developed close defence relations with Pakistan during the Cold War. Washington supplied F-16 fighters to Pakistan, creating strategic and political resistance to later Indian purchases of the same aircraft.

Concerns about supply reliability also influenced New Delhi.

India has also demanded domestic manufacturing, technology transfer and freedom to integrate locally developed weapons. American defence exports frequently include end-use monitoring and restrictions protecting classified technology. These conditions may conflict with India’s policy of strategic autonomy.

Its caution concerns combat fighters, where political reliability, operational independence, cost, technology access and compatibility with India’s existing fleet carry exceptional importance.

Description: <i>UN Backs Equal-Area World Maps in 164–1 Vote

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly adopted a resolution encouraging wider use of world maps that display continents according to their correct relative area.

The “Correct the Map” resolution received 164 votes in favour, one against and six abstentions. The United States cast the only opposing vote. Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine abstained.

India supported the resolution while maintaining that its vote did not alter its position on the territorial status of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Introduced by Togo with support from the African Union, the resolution promotes equal-area projections such as Equal Earth. Supporters argue that the commonly used Mercator projection makes Europe, North America and Greenland appear disproportionately large while reducing the visual size of Africa and other equatorial regions.

Africa is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland, although many Mercator maps make the two appear broadly comparable. This distortion occurs because Mercator enlarges areas increasingly as they move towards the poles. The projection was developed in 1569 for navigation because it preserves compass directions, not because it accurately compares land areas.

Equal Earth, introduced in 2018, preserves the proportional area of countries and continents while presenting the world in a visually familiar curved form. Like every flat representation of a spherical planet, however, it must distort some combination of shape, direction or distance.

The United States described the campaign as ideological. Ukraine said its abstention resulted from concerns about how territorial boundaries were represented, rather than opposition to accurately showing Africa’s size.

Description: <i>Indian Scientists Share 2026 Ig Nobel Prize for Cockroach Milk Research

Indian researchers have been included in an international team awarded the 2026 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry for investigating the unusually nutritious “milk” produced by a rare cockroach species.

The winning study examined Diploptera punctata, commonly known as the Pacific beetle cockroach. Unlike most cockroaches, this species gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The mother produces a milk-like liquid to nourish developing embryos inside her body.

After consuming the liquid, the embryos store part of it as tiny protein crystals. Researchers found that these crystals contain proteins, fats, sugars and essential amino acids. Their milk proteins were calculated to contain more than three times the energy of an equivalent quantity of cow-milk proteins.

Indian members of the winning group included Sanchari Banerjee, Nitish Sathyanarayanan, Jandhyam Srikanth and structural biologist Subramanian Ramaswamy. They shared the award with researchers from France, Japan, Canada and the United States.

The Ig Nobel Prizes recognise genuine research that initially makes people laugh but then encourages them to think. They are separate from the Nobel Prizes and do not carry the same scientific status or prize money. The 2026 ceremony was held in Zurich, Switzerland.

Headlines describing cockroach milk as a future “superfood” require caution. Scientists are not proposing that people begin milking or consuming cockroaches. Extracting meaningful quantities would be extremely difficult, and the material has not been established as a safe, approved food for humans.

The research is valuable because understanding how these crystals slowly release nutrients could help future studies involving protein structure, nutrition and controlled food delivery. The award celebrates scientific curiosity rather than announcing a new commercial milk product.

Description: <i>DRDO Completes Military Trials of Quantum-Secure Communication System

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation has completed military field trials of an indigenously developed, fibre-based Quantum Key Distribution system designed to protect sensitive communications from interception.

The technology was developed by DRDO in partnership with Bengaluru-based Taqbit Labs. According to the defence organisation, laboratory research and experience from earlier demonstrations were used to convert the system into a scalable product suitable for deployment in strategic networks.

Quantum Key Distribution, commonly called QKD, allows two authorised locations to create and exchange encryption keys using individual particles of light. If an attacker attempts to measure or intercept the quantum transmission, the disturbance can be detected. The affected key can then be rejected before confidential information is exchanged.

The technology does not transmit ordinary data magically or make every connected computer impossible to hack. Instead, it strengthens the process used to distribute cryptographic keys. End devices, software and trusted network nodes must still be protected through conventional cybersecurity.

DRDO said the successful military trials could provide the foundation for larger, multi-hop quantum networks connecting several defence locations. Such systems may eventually protect communications involving command centres, military installations and other critical national infrastructure.

The DRDO project should also be distinguished from the separate 1,000-kilometre quantum-communication network demonstrated under India’s National Quantum Mission. Together, these programmes represent different parts of India’s effort to prepare communication systems for future cyber threats, including powerful quantum computers capable of challenging some existing encryption methods.

Description: <i>India’s Estimated Literacy Rate Reaches 80.9 Percent, Marking Major Progress

India’s literacy rate is estimated to have reached 80.9 percent among people aged seven years and above, according to data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2023–24.

The figure has recently received renewed attention online, with many Indians celebrating the country’s progress since Independence. India’s literacy rate was only about 18.3 percent in the 1951 Census, meaning fewer than one in five citizens could read and write at that time.

By the 2011 Census, the rate had increased to approximately 74 percent. The latest PLFS estimate indicates that more than four out of every five Indians aged seven or older are now literate.

However, the 80.9 percent figure is a survey-based estimate and should not be confused with a new national Census result. India’s next comprehensive population enumeration will provide a more detailed picture of literacy levels across districts, communities and age groups.

The PLFS data also reveals continuing inequalities. Urban literacy is approximately 90 percent, compared with about 77 percent in rural India. Male literacy remains higher than female literacy, showing that access to education is still uneven.

The long-term rise reflects expanded school access, adult-literacy campaigns, improved enrolment and increasing public awareness about education. Nevertheless, literacy does not automatically guarantee learning quality.

Education experts say India’s next challenge is ensuring that people counted as literate can understand written information, perform basic calculations and use those skills effectively in everyday life.

Description: <i>Urine Is Contributing to Ice Melt at Everest Base Camp, Study Finds

Human waste and fuel consumption at Mount Everest Base Camp are contributing to local melting of the Khumbu Glacier, according to new research involving scientists from Nepal and the United States.

Everest Base Camp is established directly on glacier ice during the spring climbing season. Thousands of climbers, guides and support workers temporarily occupy the site, producing large quantities of urine and consuming fuel for cooking, heating and electricity.

Researchers estimate that more than 6,000 litres of urine may be produced daily during the busiest period. Because urine leaves the body at a temperature considerably warmer than the surrounding ice, it transfers heat to the glacier.

The study calculated that this thermal energy could theoretically melt approximately 154 tonnes of ice during one climbing season. However, urine does not chemically dissolve the glacier, and researchers did not directly observe an isolated block of ice melting from urine alone. The figure represents a calculated melt equivalent based on heat transfer.

Fuel combustion creates a much larger local impact. Heat generated by kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas and petrol could account for more than 2,300 tonnes of ice melt. Combined camp activities were estimated to produce enough energy to melt approximately 2,492 tonnes.

Scientists stressed that global climate change remains the main cause of Himalayan glacier retreat. Human activity at base camp creates an additional, concentrated source of heat and pollution.

Urine and other waste may also introduce nutrients, microorganisms and contaminants into glacier meltwater. Researchers have therefore recommended stronger waste-management systems and consideration of relocating the camp to nearby ice-free ground.

Description: <i>Buried Underwear Soil Experiment Wins 2026 Ig Nobel Prize

A European research team has received the 2026 Ig Nobel Prize for Soil Science after using buried cotton underwear to measure biological activity beneath the ground.

The award went to Franz Bender, Marcel van der Heijden, Atlant Bieri and Pia Viviani. Their citizen-science project asked participants to bury standard white cotton underpants in gardens, agricultural fields and grasslands before digging them up approximately two months later.

The method works because cotton is largely composed of cellulose. Bacteria, fungi and other soil organisms consume and break down this natural material. In biologically active soil, much of the cotton disappears, frequently leaving only the synthetic waistband and stitching. Underwear that remains comparatively intact can indicate lower decomposition activity.

The original Swiss project recruited around 1,000 participants, who buried more than 2,000 pairs of underwear and thousands of tea bags. The wider initiative subsequently involved participants in more than 25 countries.

Researchers photographed and analysed the recovered garments to create an “underpants index” of decomposition. Private gardens generally recorded high activity because they often contained organic matter and diverse soil organisms. Intensively maintained grass lawns showed comparatively low decomposition.

However, scientists cautioned that faster decay does not automatically mean an ecosystem is healthier. Extremely rapid decomposition can indicate excessive nutrient levels, which may benefit crop production but disturb some natural environments.

The Ig Nobel Prizes celebrate genuine research that first makes people laugh and then encourages them to think. They are organised by the Annals of Improbable Research and are separate from the Nobel Prizes.

Behind the humorous image of scientists examining dirty underwear, the experiment offered an inexpensive and easily understood way to involve the public in studying soil biodiversity, fertility and land-management practices.

Description: <i>Noise Barriers Installed Along Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor

Concerns about noise from India’s upcoming Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train have drawn attention as construction advances through cities, towns and residential areas. The trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, potentially producing aerodynamic noise and sound from the interaction between wheels, rails and elevated structures.

To limit disturbance, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited is installing noise barriers on both sides of elevated sections. Its January 2026 update said more than 4.9 lakh panels had been installed along approximately 245 kilometres of the corridor.

The standard barriers are precast concrete panels measuring about two metres high and one metre wide. Each weighs approximately 830 to 840 kilograms. Their surface has been designed to reflect and distribute sound produced by passing trains, particularly noise originating near the wheels and lower portion of the coaches.

In residential and densely populated urban sections, the barriers are being increased to a height of three metres. These locations receive an additional one-metre translucent polycarbonate panel above the concrete structure. The transparent section is intended to provide greater noise protection without completely blocking views for passengers.

Around 2,000 panels are required for every kilometre because barriers must be placed along both sides of the double-track viaduct. Dedicated manufacturing facilities have been established in locations including Ahmedabad, Anand, Surat and Vadodara.

The barriers should reduce operational noise, although their effectiveness will ultimately depend on train frequency, speed, local geography and maintenance after services begin.

Description: <i>Vande Bharat Cargo Train to Undergo Trials at Up to 180 Kmph

Indian Railways has begun technical trials of its first Freight EMU developed on the Vande Bharat trainset platform. The 16-coach prototype is intended to transport time-sensitive cargo much faster than conventional goods trains.

The train initially completed loaded testing at 130 kilometres per hour on the Kota–Rohal Khurd section. It subsequently touched approximately 145 kilometres per hour during further speed trials. Reports indicate that the testing programme includes runs at speeds of up to 180 kilometres per hour before final certification.

However, 180 kilometres per hour will be a testing speed rather than the expected speed of regular services. The train is being designed for commercial operation at up to 160 kilometres per hour, subject to track conditions, signalling systems and safety approval.

Unlike conventional freight trains, the Freight EMU does not use a separate locomotive to pull unpowered wagons. Traction motors are distributed through the formation, with powered and non-powered coaches arranged alternately. Approximately half of the train’s axles receive power.

Distributed traction enables faster acceleration, smoother braking and quicker recovery after speed restrictions. Regenerative braking can also return electricity to the supply network when the train slows down.

The train has wide loading doors and systems designed for palletised goods. It is expected to carry e-commerce parcels, medicines, packaged products, electronics, refrigerated goods and other cargo requiring dependable, time-bound delivery.

Description: <i>India Placed Ahead of China in Air-Power Ranking, Makes Indian Citizens Proud

The Indian Air Force has again been placed ahead of China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force in the 2026 Global Air Powers Ranking published by the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft, or WDMMA.

Several reports described India as the world’s third-most powerful air force, behind the United States and Russia.

On that full list, the Indian Air Force is sixth with a TruVal Rating of 69.4, while China’s main air force is seventh with 63.8. The United States Air Force, United States Navy, Russian Air Force, United States Army and United States Marine Corps occupy the first five positions. India becomes third when only each country’s principal air force is counted.

WDMMA estimates that India operates 1,716 aircraft, compared with China’s much larger fleet of 3,733. The organisation says its proprietary TruVal formula does not simply count aircraft. It also considers fleet quality and balance, modernisation, logistics, attack and defence capabilities, special-mission aircraft, bombers, close-air-support platforms, training fleets, aircraft on order, domestic aviation manufacturing and operational experience.

The result attracted criticism from Chinese state-linked media and military commentators, who argued that actual combat capability cannot be determined through a paper ranking.

Description: <i>John Ternus Takes Over as Apple CEO and Indians Become Curious With His Salary in IT Office & Corporate World

Apple has completed its biggest leadership change in 15 years, appointing longtime hardware executive John Ternus as chief executive officer. Ternus formally replaced Tim Cook on September 1, 2026, following a transition announced in April and unanimously approved by Apple’s board.

Cook, who had led Apple since 2011, has not left the company. He has moved into the newly created position of executive chairman and will remain involved in major strategic and global policy matters.

According to Apple’s regulatory filing, Ternus will receive an annual base salary of $3 million. He was also granted a restricted-stock-unit award with a target value of $2.5 million for his partial service as CEO during fiscal 2026.

For fiscal 2027, Apple has approved an annual equity award targeted at $55 million. This does not mean Ternus will immediately receive $55 million in cash or freely tradable shares. Seventy-five percent of the award will be performance-based and will depend on Apple’s shareholder returns compared with other S&P 500 companies.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and previously led hardware engineering across the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods product lines.

Description: <i>Reports Say Putin Fears Ending Ukraine War Without Full Donbas Control

Recent reports claim Russian President Vladimir Putin is reluctant to end the Ukraine war without securing the whole Donbas region because an incomplete victory could be interpreted as weakness inside Russia.

Donbas comprises Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Russian forces control nearly all of Luhansk and most—but not all—of Donetsk. Moscow claims both regions as Russian territory following annexation declarations rejected by Ukraine and most of the international community.

Putin has repeatedly demanded that Ukrainian forces withdraw from the remaining Kyiv-controlled parts of Donetsk as a condition for ending hostilities. Ukraine rejects that demand, arguing that surrendering fortified territory would reward aggression, displace residents and make future Russian attacks easier.

Reuters previously reported, citing people familiar with Kremlin thinking, that Putin rejected proposals for a ceasefire along the existing front line and continued to believe Russia could capture the remaining Donbas territory. Separate reporting suggested that ending the war without achieving this minimum objective could damage his image as a powerful leader and create dissatisfaction among nationalist groups and military figures.

Russia’s leadership has presented the invasion as a historic struggle requiring victory. Accepting a settlement without controlling all the territory Moscow claims could therefore raise questions about the war’s enormous human and economic costs.

Description: <i>Nepal Seeks Climate Compensation From India, China and US After Flash Floods

Nepal has called for climate-related compensation from major greenhouse-gas emitters following the devastating August 26 flash floods, but reports saying Kathmandu blamed India alone for directly causing the disaster are misleading.

Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said his country had contributed very little to global emissions yet was suffering severe consequences from rising temperatures, melting Himalayan glaciers and increasingly destructive mountain floods.

Khanal specifically identified India, China and the United States as major emitters with a responsibility to support vulnerable countries. He argued that post-disaster financing should be treated as a matter of climate justice and “moral liability,” rather than charity.

Nepal is seeking financial assistance through international climate mechanisms, including the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage established under United Nations climate negotiations. Reconstruction is expected to cost several billion dollars after the floods destroyed settlements, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

Scientists warn that global warming can increase Himalayan glacial instability, although attributing one individual disaster to the emissions of a particular country is scientifically and legally complex.

India has historically argued that climate responsibility must consider cumulative emissions, per-capita pollution and different levels of development. Western industrialised countries account for a much larger proportion of historical carbon emissions, while India’s per-capita emissions remain comparatively low.

Despite the compensation debate, Indian rescue and technical teams have participated in Nepal’s disaster response. Therefore, the controversy concerns responsibility for the wider global climate crisis—not an accusation that India physically triggered the flood.

Description: <i>Bihar Warns Against Eating Unfamiliar Fish Swept in by Nepal Floods

The Bihar government has advised residents not to eat, buy or sell unfamiliar fish caught in floodwaters entering the state from Nepal, following reports that some people became ill after consuming unusually large or unknown varieties.

The advisory was issued by Bihar’s Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department as swollen Nepal-fed rivers carried water into northern districts. Reports of unusual fish sightings have emerged from areas including East and West Champaran, Gopalganj and Bagaha, particularly around the Gandak river system.

Officials explained that flooding can wash fish out of rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs and carry them over long distances. During this journey, the fish may remain in water contaminated by sewage, chemicals, dead animals, decomposing material or human remains. Such exposure can introduce harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and toxins.

The principal concern is contamination and the inability of residents to identify unfamiliar fish or determine whether they are safe for consumption.

Authorities have asked people to avoid fish caught directly from floodwater until conditions stabilise. Unknown or abnormal-looking specimens should be reported to district fisheries officials rather than eaten or sold.

Anyone experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty or another unusual symptom after consuming flood-caught fish should seek medical assistance immediately.

Description: <i>Indian Citizens Shocked As Bank Unions Warn of Indefinite Strike Over Five-Day Workweek Delay

Banking services across India could face major disruption after the United Forum of Bank Unions announced a phased nationwide strike over the delayed introduction of a five-day working week and changes to the performance-linked incentive system.

The UFBU has called a one-day strike for September 11, followed by a three-day stoppage from September 28 to 30. If the disputes remain unresolved, the unions plan to begin an indefinite strike on October 26.

The forum represents employees and officers working in public-sector, private, foreign, regional rural and cooperative banks. Physical branch services, cash deposits, cheque processing and some administrative work could be affected. ATMs, UPI, mobile banking and online transfers are generally expected to remain available, although cash replenishment and back-office operations could experience delays during a prolonged strike.

Bank employees currently receive holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays. Under the settlement signed with the Indian Banks’ Association on March 8, 2024, all Saturdays would become holidays. Employees agreed to work an additional 40 minutes from Monday to Friday, meaning customer-service hours would not be reduced. However, the old proposal still requires government approval and an official notification, and that is their main demand right now this year.

The dispute is not limited to working days. Unions are also opposing a revised incentive scheme for senior officers, describing it as discriminatory and inconsistent with an earlier bilateral settlement. The matter is reportedly pending before the Delhi High Court and the Chief Labour Commissioner.

The indefinite strike is therefore a formal escalation plan, not an action already underway. Negotiations could still result in postponement or withdrawal. Customers should monitor announcements from their banks and complete time-sensitive branch transactions before the scheduled September strikes.

Description: <i>Camera Beneath SpaceX Rocket Sparks Questions About Surviving Extreme Launch Heat

Close-up footage showing a SpaceX Starship lifting off above cameras positioned near the launch mount has gone viral, prompting questions about how recording equipment survives the rocket’s powerful exhaust.

The clips regained attention following Starship’s 13th test flight in July. During that mission, the approximately 122-metre launch vehicle briefly deployed 20 upgraded Starlink V3 satellites before they re-entered the atmosphere as planned. Starship completed its flight and splashed down, while the Super Heavy booster experienced engine problems during its landing attempt.

Viral posts claim cameras placed beneath or close to the rocket are enclosed in thick steel containers, protected by synthetic sapphire windows and continuously cooled or purged with nitrogen gas.

Sapphire called neelam in Hindi is aluminium oxide manufactured as a transparent crystal. It is extremely hard, resists scratching and tolerates higher temperatures than ordinary glass, making it useful for demanding optical windows.

A nitrogen purge could create positive pressure around the window, helping prevent smoke, moisture and soot from covering it. Circulating gas may also remove some heat from the enclosure. Shock-resistant mounts, insulation, replaceable protective windows and remote operation provide additional protection.

=Similar protective methods are used in industrial and aerospace imaging.

The cameras also do not survive by facing the full engine temperature directly. Their placement, shielding and viewing angle reduce exposure, while Starbase’s powerful water-deluge system absorbs heat, suppresses dust and weakens acoustic energy around the launch mount.

Description: <i>CERN’s Nataraja (Hindi God) Statue Links Ancient Symbolism With Particle Physics

A two-metre bronze statue of Shiva as Nataraja at CERN has attracted renewed attention online, with users describing it as evidence of a connection between Hindu philosophy and modern particle physics.

In Hindu tradition, Nataraja represents Shiva performing the cosmic dance. The imagery is commonly interpreted as the continuous cycle of creation, preservation, transformation and destruction. A ring of flames surrounds the dancing figure, while Shiva stands over a figure representing ignorance.

The symbolism has been compared with activity at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. Inside the accelerator, particles travel close to the speed of light before colliding. Energy released during these collisions can produce new particles. Many exist for extremely short periods before decaying into other particles. Nothing is created from nothing or simply disappears; energy, momentum, electric charge and other conserved quantities must remain balanced.

The plaque beside the statue refers to the writings of physicist and author Fritjof Capra, who used Shiva’s dance as a metaphor for the continuous movement and transformation of subatomic matter. Scientists and writers, including Carl Sagan, have also discussed the philosophical parallel. [CERN’s official record

Their connection is therefore metaphorical: dharma and art offer a powerful image of a changing universe, while science investigates those changes through observation and testing. The statue represents cultural dialogue and India–CERN cooperation.

Description: <i>Why Entry Into India’s Currency Printing Presses Is Strictly Controlled

Recent social-media reports have drawn attention to the unusually strict security surrounding India’s currency-printing facilities, claiming that even Union ministers cannot enter production areas without prior permission and verification.

India prints banknotes at four locations. The government-owned Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India operates presses in Nashik and Dewas, while the Reserve Bank of India’s subsidiary, Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran, manages facilities in Mysuru and Salboni. [RBI explanation]

These plants handle restricted material, including specialised paper, security ink, printing plates, unfinished sheets and completed banknotes. Consequently, holding a senior government position does not automatically provide unrestricted access to every production zone.

Official visitors, including ministers and senior officers, normally require advance coordination, identity verification and security clearance. Access is limited to approved areas and may involve visitor passes, physical screening and an escort. Mobile phones, cameras, storage devices and personal belongings can be prohibited inside sensitive sections.

Employees also operate under layered controls. Entry permissions are linked to their assigned work areas, while note paper and printed sheets are carefully counted at different production stages. Waste and defective notes must be recorded and securely destroyed. Surveillance and access-control systems help detect unauthorised movement.

The Currency Note Press in Nashik confirms that the Central Industrial Security Force protects both the plant and currency consignments during transportation. It also describes a tightly controlled accounting system for security materials. [Official press information

Description: <i>India’s Indigenous Quantum Refrigerator is Impressing Indians!

India has reached an important cryogenic-engineering milestone after a largely indigenous dilution refrigerator cooled to four Kelvin, equivalent to approximately minus 269°C.

The achievement was recorded at the Quantum Reference Facility in Medha Towers, part of Andhra Pradesh’s Amaravati Quantum Valley. Officials said most components were developed or sourced domestically, reducing India’s dependence on expensive imported refrigeration systems.

Dilution refrigerators are highly specialised scientific instruments designed to cool quantum processors, sensors and experimental materials to temperatures close to absolute zero.

Superconducting quantum computers require such extreme cooling because heat creates electrical noise and disrupts the delicate quantum states used to store and process information. Commercial dilution refrigerators typically use helium-3 and helium-4 circulation to reach temperatures measured in millikelvin.

The four-Kelvin achievement is therefore an initial milestone, not the refrigerator’s final goal. Four Kelvin is cold enough for testing several cryogenic components, but superconducting quantum processors generally need temperatures near 10–20 millikelvin—hundreds of times colder. India’s Department of Science and Technology has previously identified approximately 10 millikelvin as an important operating range for quantum computing. [DST]

Researchers must now demonstrate that the indigenous system can move through its remaining cooling stages, reach the millikelvin range and maintain a stable temperature while connected to working quantum hardware.

India already operates imported dilution refrigerators at major laboratories. The Amaravati project is significant because it seeks to develop the technology domestically, lowering costs, simplifying maintenance and creating local expertise in cryogenics—a critical but often overlooked part of the quantum-computing supply chain.

Description: <i>Kalpasar Project Moves Closer to Final Planning After Decades of Studies

Gujarat’s long-pending Kalpasar Project has returned to attention after the Centre informed Parliament that its Detailed Project Report is at an advanced stage of finalisation. The ambitious scheme proposes constructing a large barrier across the Gulf of Khambhat to create a coastal freshwater reservoir.

Water flowing from seven rivers into the gulf would be collected for irrigation, drinking and industrial use. The project is expected to improve water security in drought-prone Saurashtra and support irrigation across approximately 10 lakh hectares in 42 talukas of nine districts.

The latest design also proposes a highway-and-rail corridor over the barrier. Under the present alignment, the Bhavnagar–Surat journey could fall from approximately 356 kilometres to 177 kilometres. Around 2,470 megawatts of solar and wind capacity is also proposed on suitable reclaimed land.

India and the Netherlands signed a Letter of Intent in May for technical cooperation. Dutch expertise is expected to assist with coastal engineering, hydraulic modelling, climate resilience and management of seawater salinity.

However, Kalpasar has not entered full construction. Gujarat’s official project website says the process of including the proposed dyke as a permissible activity under the Coastal Regulation Zone notification remains under consideration by the Union Environment Ministry. Environmental, technical and financial approvals will still be required. [Official project status]

Therefore, viral descriptions presenting Kalpasar as an almost-completed “world’s largest freshwater lake” are misleading. The project has gained momentum, but it remains in the planning and approval stage.

Description: <i>Iran Asks India to Use Diplomatic Contacts to Help End War

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use India’s extensive diplomatic relationships to help move the parties involved in the Iran conflict away from war and towards negotiations.

The request was made during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on August 31. Pezeshkian said India’s contacts with different governments could contribute to ending the cycle of violence and restoring dialogue.

The appeal came amid renewed military exchanges between Iran and the United States. American forces recently struck Iranian launchers on Larak Island, after which Iran launched missiles towards US military facilities in Jordan. The escalation followed the breakdown of an interim agreement signed in June.

Pezeshkian maintained that Tehran remained open to a negotiated settlement. He said Iran would reciprocate if Washington returned to its commitments under the interim arrangement.

Modi expressed concern over the escalation and reiterated India’s position that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He also stressed the importance of protecting civilians, commercial vessels and seafarers, while maintaining freedom of navigation and trade through the Strait of Hormuz.

The leaders discussed bilateral trade, maritime cooperation and India’s involvement in Iran’s Chabahar Port. Pezeshkian thanked India for maintaining communication and cooperation with Tehran during the conflict.

However, India has not announced a formal mediation initiative. Iran’s statement was a diplomatic request, not confirmation that New Delhi has agreed to negotiate directly with the United States or other parties on Tehran’s behalf.
