Chiron and His Wound: They are One and the Same

The Chiron myth- short version:

Chiron was a centaur, son of Saturn and the nymph Philyra, rejected by both parents.
Chiron was a healer, astrologer, oracle, teacher, mentor, wise man- taught many famous heroes.
During a scuffle, one of Chiron’s students, Heracles, accidentally wounded his mentor, Chiron, with an arrow dipped in the poison blood of the Hydra which created a wound that couldn’t be healed.
Chiron, despite being a wise healer, couldn’t heal his own wound.
Later, Chiron agreed to give up his immortality and take Prometheus’s place, chained to a rock. Eventually Chiron died and no longer suffered from his wound.

The blood of the Hydra as the catalyst for the myth:

Today “Hydra-like problem” or “hydra’” refers to a multifaceted problem that seems incapable of step-by-step solution, or to one that worsens upon conventional attempts to solve it… (Source)

Chiron received his wound from his own pupil, Heracles. In one version of the myth, it is Chiron’s words of wisdom that come to Heracles’s aid to defeat the Hydra:

“We rise by kneeling; we conquer by surrendering; we gain by giving up.”

All his other weapons having failed, Heracles remembered his mentor’s words and knelt down in the swamp and lifted up the monster by one of her heads into the light of day, where she began to wilt. Heracles then cut off each of her heads, dipping his arrows in the Hydra’s poisonous blood at the same time. (Source)

No Outlet for Anger

In astrology, Chiron represents the type of wound that becomes nearly impossible to get truly angry about because:

Our own behavior, actions, words and deeds are complicit in bringing about the incurable wound.

How can Chiron get angry with with Heracles, his own student, for inflicting the injury?

Wasn’t it Chiron’s own advice that enabled Heracles to slay the Hydra?

At least if Chiron had been injured by an enemy there would have been an outlet for bitterness, resentment and anger, right?

*Chiron in the birth chart can show a place of deep anger and resentment because there is no one to blame.
*Chiron in the birth chart can show a place where we must accept the consequences of our words and actions.

It’s the Very Essence of Who We are that Leads to the Wound

Chirotic wounds can give rise to, “If I had a chance to do it all over again…” type of thinking.

Really? What if you had a chance to do it all again? Would you really have done anything differently?

If Chiron had a chance to do it all over again, what would he have changed?

Would he have not become a healer?
Would he have not become a mentor?
Would he not have given advice to Heracles?
Would he have let Heracles die?
Would he have skipped the party that led to being poked with the arrow?
Would he have lived his entire life in denial of who he really was?

To change one part of his mythic journey Chiron would have had to change the entire nature of his being. His very nature led to his wound.

*Chiron’s essence and Chiron’s wound are inextricably bound together.

“If Only…”

It’s not so much that Chiron receives a wound, it’s that he receives this particular wound. This one wound from this one particular animal whose blood has no antidote. This one wound, on one fateful day, given by a friend- not an enemy. An arrow dipped in the blood of a Minotaur, for example, would not have had this effect. If only Chiron had not been the one to give the advice to Heracles on how to defeat the Hydra, he would not have been struck by a poison arrow- there would be no poison, there would be no arrow. If only he hadn’t gone to the party. If only…

*Chiron in the birth chart can show a place where we give in to “If only…” type of thinking.

Chiron-Venus, for example, might always think of a lost love, trying to soothe a wounded heart by thinking of ways that she could have held onto that love, “If only…I had done this… if only I had known that… if only I hadn’t said that… if only circumstances had been different….then it would have worked out.”

Chiron couldn’t heal his wound- and neither could anyone else!

The Chirotic wound is likely to be one that is not talked about in mainstream conversation. The fact is, Chiron couldn’t heal his wound, and neither could anyone else. No one had the cure to his particular problem. Chirotic problems are those that are unlikely to have a ready-made, store-bought solution. Because of this, people with Chiron problems are likely to explore alternative therapies in an attempt to find a solution to what ails them.

Hi Michelle!!! I was wondering if you have time to do a quick chart for me. As soon as I saw your post I went to astro.com to see what I have going on in the 8th house. In readings I’ve gotten in the past I remember hearing, whoah , you have a lot going on in the 8th house. It would appear so. It’s a little scary to me because it seems like there’s WAY much going on in there. What do you make of it? My birthday is August 10, 1982 and 8:36pm in Detroit, Michigan.

I’m going to give a slightly different take than the norm because so many people have written so well about the various planets in houses that I have very little to add that’s new. A simple search for “planets in the 8th house” brings up many excellent articles and blog posts.

Planets in the 8th House: We Gather Here Today- to Get to the Bottom of Things

Pluto in your 8th house carries with it all of the potentials of your 9th house. This is because Scorpio is the sign on your 9th house cusp and Pluto is Scorpio’s ruler. Pluto brings your 9th house concerns with it to your 8th house. Every time your 9th house wants to do something it checks with the agenda of the 8th house.
What this means is that when you consider going back to school, when you think about the meaning of life, when you wonder about metaphysical topics, you bring those concerns back to your 8th house and you ask “How do these activities and interests serve my need to dig deep, handle crisis, develop deep relationships with others, understand my relationship to death, and satisfy my desire to get to the bottom of things?”
The same is true of your 10th house (represented by Jupiter), your 11th house (also represented by Jupiter), your 12th house (represented by Saturn) and your 2nd house (represented by Mars).
These four planets serve the agenda of the 8th house. They bring the concerns of the houses they represent to the 8th house for direction and further instructions. They want to know, “How deep can I go in this area of my life?”

One reason why you’re feeling confused is that all of the transiting planets in Pisces are fogging up your glasses- they’re in your first house making it difficult for you to see which direction you’re headed in. Some confusion and dreaminess are probably part of your personality in general as a person with a Pisces Ascendant and a natal Sun-Jupiter-Neptune conjunction, but these characteristics are amplified right now by the transiting Neptune-Chiron conjunction in your 12th house making a sextile aspect to that natal Sun-Jupiter-Neptune conjunction in your 10th: big confusion, feeling vulnerable, feeling confused, wandering in fog, daydreaming, expanded spiritual states, hypersensitivity, and feeling like there are no barriers between you and everything else- psychic overload.

Hi Michelle, Would you have time to do a reading for me? Mars will be going direct on my 8th house cusp, which is at 0 degrees Leo. Natal Pluto is also in the 8th. I am wondering how this may reshape my personality as you say above. I am in the process of a huge transformation as I am starting my own spiritual consulting business, but I am resenting it at the same time because of all the time it will require. Maybe I just need to get better organized, but I was a little disturbed to see that picture you assigned to Sagittarius in the 12th, where mine falls, as I wonder if sometimes I am sacrificing too much of my time for this spiritual stuff! Thanks.

Pluto transited your 12th house beginning in 1996 and crossed your Ascendant in 2006. During this period, you underwent a major overhaul of your identity (Sun) and you were forced to deal with bad habits, old karma, and deep fears while recognizing a need to become more spiritual and develop appreciation for alone time. It was a time to get in touch with the spiritual explorer inside yourself. Having your Sun in the 12th combined with having a strong T-square involving Neptune, and having Mars in Pisces, there is probably always a pang of guilt when you go off to do your own thing, pursue your own interests, or spend time by yourself- you probably also feel a little selfish.

Transiting Mars heading into the 8th house

Mars transiting back and forth over your 8th cusp these past few months has definitely been giving you more energy to continue in your transformation process, but it’s not the cause of the transformation. Mars will head towards a conjunction with Pluto in the 8th by June, giving you a great deal of physical energy (Mars) to put into your ongoing change and to deal with complex emotions (8th) surrounding any ego, vanity or pride (Leo) issues that prevent you from moving on in your path. Interception

If you have a sign intercepted in the 8th house then the ruler of the intercepted sign is the co-ruler of the house. For example, if you have Leo on the cusp of the 8th house, with Virgo intercepted in the 8th house, the Sun (which rules Leo) becomes the main ruler of the house (and of primary importance) and Mercury (the ruler of Virgo) becomes the co-ruler of the house (and of secondary importance). You should look at the house position of both the Sun and Mercury to glean information about 8th house transformation- keeping in mind that the Sun’s position will be more important than Mercury’s position.

When interpreting house rulers, we must always forget about their ordinary significance as planets for the time being. It makes absolutely no difference which planet acts as ruler of a given house; as house ruler it simply informs us about the ups and downs of that specific house. What matters is whether the planet is well or poorly place, and in which house it stands.

Thanks so much. Quite helpful. I think the most felt cusp is the 2nd. With Uranus on the first house side and Saturn on the 2nd house side. I have always worked hard for money, never been able to save or if I have a little back some emergency would arise. By the same token when I would be totally broke money would always come to me from unexpected sources. Also Uranus in first house….when people meet me, at some point in our relationship they will look at me and say, “You are really weird” Also wish to thank all the people who took time to comment. I have decided to live at least until I am 73 just to prove the guy wrong!

The 8th House Transformation: What is it?

Transformation- What is it?

Transformation is a word astrologers use in association with the 8th house- but what does it mean to transform? What is transformed in relation to the 8th house?

Transform:

1. to change in form, appearance, or structure; metamorphose.
2. to change in condition, nature, or character; convert.
3. to change into another substance; transmute.

When people transform they experience the change of one form, condition, or substance into another.

Form:

1. external appearance of a clearly defined area, as distinguished from color or material;

This could refer to people, for example, who lose a great deal of weight and transform their physical body and actual outer appearance, or form.

Condition:

1. a particular mode of being of a person or thing; existing state; situation with respect to circumstances.

Changing one’s condition could point to a transformation like the one that Coco Chanel experienced in transforming from an orphan to a wealthy fashion icon. Coco Chanel had the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Uranus in the 8th house.

Substance:

5. the actual matter of a thing, as opposed to the appearance or shadow; reality.

10b. the essential part of a thing; essence.

That some ancient monks partook in extreme diets in an effort to change their metabolism, and, in effect, were able to mummify their bodies when they died, without the aid of chemicals, is an example of changing the actual substance of the body.

Changing one’s essence is esoteric and probably is the type of transformation that most people think of when they hear the word “transformation.” Transforming one’s essence implies changing who one is at the most fundamental level- almost becoming an entirely different being.

The 8th House Transformation- Only for People with Planets in the 8th?

Definitely not. To suggest that only people with planets in the 8th house undergo transformation is ridiculous.

Follow the Leader

The location (by house) of the planet ruling the sign on the cusp of the eighth indicates the realm of experience where transformation will actually BEGIN and the part of the personality (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn) or unconscious (Uranus, Neptune or Pluto) that will be most involved.

Resistance is Futile

Trying to resist an 8th house transformation is futile. The nature of the 8th is that it tangles up the threads of one’s existence with what belongs to other people- either actual things that belong to them, their money, or even their emotions and bodies. In effect, transformation is largely beyond the individual’s control- “fated” they like to say.

Question: Planets on Cusps

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to answer me. First you may use information and answers anywhere you want to. I have planets in all houses except 7 & 9. Venus intercepted in Aries in 12th and Neptune intercepted in Libra in 6th in opposition to each other. I have 2Gemini39 on 2nd house cusp. I have Uranus 0Gem46 and Saturn 6Gem03. 4th House 16cancer50 and Jupiter 15cancer21. 4th house 10Leo39 and Pluto 5Leo24. 9th house 25Sagit.43 with the Moon in 8th at 21Sagit00. 11th house cusp 11Aquarius39 and Mercury in 11th 14Aquarius35. 12th house 13Pisces13 and Sun in 11th at 9Pisces07. Now, how do you read these planets. As actually being in the house they are in or being in the next house because they are so close to the cusp? This chart was mathmatically figured out by hand by a fellow I have know for 40 years. Astrodienst is 2degrees off on moon. 2/28/43 9:15am cwt. 83w00, 39N58. Back in early 70’s I had astrologers license but moved to Calif. and didn’t practice for 30 years. Recently got interested again. I have no desire to do for money, just curious and want to help where I can. P. S. Guy I have know for 40 years told me I would die in 5years at age 72. Now, how do you read these planets. As actually being in the house they are in or being in the next house because they are so close to the cusp?

Having 3 planets on cusps in my own natal chart I continually ask myself this same question. Many astrologers use a 5 degree rule when it comes to planets on cusps- meaning that planets that are less than 5 degrees from the cusp are considered in the next house. I think this method is OK at the beginning, but the more I learn, the more unsatisfactory it feels. I’m beginning to favor a blending of the two house descriptions for most purposes but, even then, I think it’s important to take the speed of each planet, as well as how close to the cusp each planet is, into consideration during interpretation.

For example, the Moon, which is the fastest moving planet, progressed into your 9th house by the time you were a few months old. Pluto, which can take more than 12 years to transit each house, did not progress into the next house until you were approximately 2 years old, or a little older. Neither one is a very long, but how long does it take for the personality to set in?

If you check out your progressed chart for different years on astro.com you can determine exactly when each planet moved into the next house and that will help you to understand exactly how much influence each house position has for you.

Guy I have know for 40 years told me I would die in 5years at age 72. He said if somehow I survived I would live to be 102. Any thoughts on that one.

If I were you I’d ignore this information. Giving out this type of information is dangerous and can have an insidious lingering effect on the mind. In my opinion, it is irresponsible.

Dearest Michelle,

Before I start, I can't believe nobody has taken advantage of this!

I am a twenty year old college student with no idea where to take my education. I want to eventually graduate, have a fulfilling career that also makes me feel financially secure. I am currently an English/Art History major. While I love literature, I have a very self-defeating attitude about writing and poor time management. I don't always do the best in these classes, even though it is my favorite thing to do. Art History comes naturally to me. I have no problems with it.

I've been recently considering a change in major to Astronomy (I'll probably still keep my Art History major). I think I could teach Astronomy at some university. So, I was wondering if astrology could nudge me in the right direction for my education and help me start thinking about future careers that are best suited for me. Thank so much!

What do you need to feel satisfied with a career?

With Cancer on the 10th and the Moon in the 10th you really need to have emotional satisfaction in your career. You’d like to display the way that you care, your sensitivity, and your deep vulnerability to the world through your choice of profession. The Moon in Leo indicates that you are not going to be happy being another cog in the machine and Uranus on the IC makes you a rebel at the core. You will want to occupy a special place in your profession and feel that your personal contribution matters. You’ll want the opportunity to receive recognition or awards in your career as well.

The path that offers the most growth for you is the North Node in Aquarius in the 4th house. Aquarius is certainly a science-oriented sign. Uranus conjunct your IC show that you probably do have an inner scientist, however, the impression I get from the Uranus-Neptune conjunction at the IC opposing Chiron-Jupiter in the 9th is someone who is rebellious rather than scientific and someone who has something to say about culture, religion, philosophy and larger world issues rather than black holes and nebulae. The Aquarius North Node in the 4th and Leo South Node in the 10th house point to someone who will get satisfaction from being personally involved in global awareness issues that affect her own country and people she knows close to home. You probably feel very happy rebelling against your country and its traditions.

It’s interesting how many times the sign on the 9th house cusp shows the actual college major of a person- in your case Gemini on the 9th clearly shows literature. Rather than pursuing an entirely new career path, if I were you, I would consider slightly altering my path towards journalism, especially with Jupiter, ruler of the 3rd, in the 9th house. In addition, Chiron in the 9th house, conjunct your MC, begs to be expressed through your choice of profession. Chiron in Cancer shows sensitivity, issues involving family traditions and traditional female roles (among other things) and specifically how those issues come into play with cultural identity with Chiron conjunct Jupiter in the 9th.

Your form of journalism or writing will probably lean towards a Venus-Neptune perception of world events, possibly even exploring your world view through writing about art and culture. You really want to love your daily job with Venus in the 6th and you want to be able to use your imagination on a daily basis with Pisces on the 6th house cusp. Your Libra Ascendant makes you approach the world with an eye on beauty, fairness, balance and aesthetic sense. Your chart ruler, Venus in Pisces, combined with Neptune on the IC makes you a rather sensitive, soft, spiritually-oriented person- not a hard science type. The combination of Uranus on the IC and the North Node in Aquarius makes me think that you could be quite creative in conducting group experiments involving cultural and religious beliefs and write about them- essentially doing something nontraditional, and probably in a private setting, but then writing about it for a larger audience. You could also start a publication about alternative viewpoints on religion and culture here in the US. Your mind is thorough, penetrative and subtle with Mercury in Taurus opposing Pluto in Scorpio- very good for investigative writing. The Sun in conjunction with Mercury, also opposing Pluto, confirms that you want to bring yourself up against powerful issues. You will be happiest doing something that challenges you in a deep way even if it’s very difficult.

If I were you I’d begin to seek out a writing job for an art or culture magazine and see where it leads. Although freelance writing would be fun, with Pisces on the 6th and Sag on the 3rd (the two most routine, everyday houses) your ability to stick to a schedule and set a routine for yourself is probably not very good.

Astrology is an option too with the Aquarius influence and the writing influence, but I think it will not give you as much satisfaction as you can find elsewhere.

Adding…although you say you have a self-defeating attitude about writing, it’s not an insurmountable obstacle. Also, time-management skills can be acquired with practice. You’re only 20 :)
