Apparently while we were all partying this summer, exotica-music favorites Waitiki was out adding more members to its already chops-heavy lineup and recording a new album.

The quartet has now expanded to a septet and been re-crisoned “The Waitiki 7“; their new 13-track CD, Adventures in Paradise, is available at Amazon.com both as a traditional release and an mp3 download.

Case-Mate Tiki case for iPhone 3G

I stumbled across this on Amazon.com today — a rubberized case for iPhone 3G and 3Gs with an abstract tiki face on the backside. I’ve seen a number of semi-cruddy but attractive wraps for the iPhone that offer no protection for the device, but this is the first truly protective one with a tiki vibe.

The case comes in pink, blue, yellow, orange, and green.

Tommy Bahama Tiki Pack has rum and a free tiki mug

I ran across this the other day in the liquor store attached to my local Publix store. It’s a combo pack with a bottle of Tommy Bahama Sand (aka light) rum and the 12 oz. ceramic tiki mug.

The best part: it was on sale for $19.95, normally $39.00. Your price may be different, but for $20 it was a true bargain.

Crazy Al Evans Halloween tiki mugs

Crazy Al Evans is an amazing California tiki carver who has been slowly expanding his repertoire to include other offerings, including a line of tiki mugs that are duplicates of his larger carved logs.

For Halloween this year, Crazy Al has beautifully painted the glaze on one of each of his mugs in “El Día de los Muertos” colors. The downside: each is a one-of-a-kind and are being sold individually on eBay. But, as my dad always used to say, “it doesn’t cost anything to look.”

Los Lobos covers “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room”

Veteran rock band Los Lobos has been working a lot with Disney lately: the band recorded the theme song to the Disney Channel show “Handy Mandy” and makes yearly appearances at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Now the band has upped the ante, releasing a CD of Disney cover songs, including “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room.”

Free ukulele-playing iPhone app

Not that real ukuleles aren’t extremely portable, but the free and aptly-named Ukulele app for iPhone and iPhone Touch lets on-the-go musicians play a virtual ukulele anywhere.

The system is pretty groovy — users can define and store up to 8 chords in a palette. Then to play a song, you select the chord from a list and “stum” the virtual strings. You can change chords on the fly and play strings together or individually.

I installed it this morning on my 2nd generation iPod Touch and it works like a charm. It’s definitely not the same as having a real uke with you, but I can see it having a lot of value in composing and works great as a time-killing diversion.
