“60 Minutes” Cameras Expose Medical Conmen Who Prey On Dying Victims

Lou Gehrig’s disease victim Michael Martin made a down-payment of $47,000 to Stowe. “I wanted to believe,” he tells Pelley. Martin agreed to participate in a hidden camera session with Stowe. The proper name for his ailment is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

Producers from “60 Minutes” set up hidden cameras in Martin’s Houston home and enlisted another ALS sufferer, Steven Watters, to pose as a potential patient for Stowe’s treatments. Stowe comes to the house and is taped answering “yes” or “yeah” to Watter’s questions about whether Stowe’s treatment was permanent and if he will be able to exercise again. Watters then asks if the stem cell therapy will keep him out of a wheelchair and Stowe responds, “Yeah, oh yeah. Absolutely…we’ve had a number of ALS patients that we got out of their wheelchairs.” No ALS patient has ever been shown to experience such a reversal in recorded medical history.

Asked what that permanent fix will cost, Stowe lays it all out for the dying man, a total of $125,000. “Because it’s $50,000 for phase one, the stem cell transplant is going to run you around $25,000 and then, we do follow-up, a, therapy after that to make sure the results hold and that’s another $50,000,” says Stowe, while “60 Minutes” cameras secretly tape the encounter.

“60 Minutes” submitted Stowe’s protocol to a number of top stem cell researchers and neurologists. They concluded there is no scientific basis for Stowe’s “therapy.” Professor Sean Morrison, director of the University of Michigan Center for Stem Cell Biology told Scott Pelley, “If somebody squirted some stem cells into the spinal cord of an ALS patient and they stood up out of their wheelchair and had a permanent fix, that would be miraculous.”

Stem cell biologist Larry Goldstein and researcher Douglas Sipp are on a task force set up by the International Society for Stem Cell Research to target unproven stem cell therapies. Sipp has been tracking bogus stem cell clinics as they proliferate on the Internet. “I would say the growth is explosive and I’ve been able to come up with more than 200 clinics that are offering some version of stem cells, for some type of medical condition for which there is really no good evidence that the stem cells would be either safe or effective,” says Sipp.

Perhaps but more than a few points are at issue here and the feeling is you’re simply not focused on the larger picture. Because if you did (look at the larger picture) Mr.Pelley you (I mean 60 Minutes) may think about a retraction on this one. Granted the report did expose a quack in the one doctors credentials (Who else is going to engage in such risky research) from Texas Tech but the other Doctor Stowe’s premise demonstrates a remarkable perspective that, will certainly in the historical record, prove to be on the money. Not just for ALS but diabetes (certainly Juvenile and perhaps even type II) as well as certain heart conditions, Alzheimer, and other yet undreamed molecular medical marvels, will find their cure by a solution that engineers molecular chemistry by way of Stem Cell transplant. This is an absolute certainty… Mark my words well my friend. Think about it… Diabetes is certainly caused by failure of the endocrines system… Namely the Pancreas. The same is no doubt true in the case of Alzheimer’s disease rooted in the pituitary gland. Already patients who have had severe heart attacks have recovered and new heart tissue rejuvenated by means of direct stem cell injection (a feat considered impossible a few short years back). The Human Genome Project almost 20 years ahead of completion but sadly remains 50 years behind in promise. What has happened??? As everyone who has had a trip to any hospital in the past decade knows full well that the cost of medicine has gone through the roof (along with everything else) and so simply extrapolate the cost of research and its clear that we have a cure almost in hand but none of the conventional research pharmaceutical centers fund because cost are simply out of reach. Too expensive too many regulations too many ingrained institutional road blocks that seem by their inception to render a dysfunction by design.

I myself have experienced the arrogance of various disciplines (physics geology, meteorology,) within lines of demarcation… Many years ago when writing a paper on the existence of a mysterious dark matter (drew immediate ridicule but which now upon rest the pillars of cosmic astrophysics) , or the dynamic interaction within our planetary interaction within cycles of solar flairs that certainly affect radio communications but also spurs an increase in geological activities in both earthquake and volcanic activity. As do certainly the astrological alignments of the moon and planets tie tightly into the tidal influences that point directly to events such as both the Kobe and Northridge quakes demonstrate and coincide with a full phase moon when accompanied with a Jupiter square on a precise and exact degree.

But even worse are the institutional constraints in that all pioneering research is held hostage by the Dons of Harvard University, Princeton, and Yale (or until someone at the research centers at Cornell or Duke holler “Hey guys! I think you gays need to take a look at this… NOTHING GETS DONE!) Which is a crock of pure unadulterated bullshit!

Then a twist as a subplot of the story emerged which seemed to blame the Internet because it provided a mechanism for people to people communication. Yeah damn right (will revisit Craigslist’s story another time)… But when the entire research efforts of this nation are held back so that a few pointy headed snobs of some Alpha Pi in your eye Greek Fraternity can keep the gates secure for their piffy piny snotty selfish ends, Houston we have a problem… So when you have people forking over a few hundred thousand for hope it seems on the surface awful but minuscule when set in the proper context and light of those who stand in the way of truth and research for their own selfish gains and garnish their own nasty nest by adding billion of dollars to their private endowments… Which is truly the greater sin my friend? Where then are the true charlatans hidden? Then ask yourself honestly who are the real Snake Oil Salesman here?
