Center fellow examines music as an instrument of peace

When Bryan Tom first came to Tempe from Tucson, he had no idea that he would end up spending a year studying the music of Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Tom, an ASU undergraduate student in the Barrett Honors College, was primarily interested in China and had set his sights on ASU because of its Chinese Language Flagship Program.

As part of a State Department grant, Tom learned to speak Mandarin and studied abroad in Shanghai for a year. Upon his return, however, Tom’s interest in learning about other cultures led him to ASU’s Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict.

The Arab Spring surprised and impressed many experts and lay observers for their largely civil, peaceful and immensely popular revolutions. But the intense debate was on the nature of these revolutions. Yet, the impressive showing of religious parties in the general elections in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt has reinforced the view of those who feared yet another wave of Islamist fundamentalism in the Arab world.

The teachings of Mahatma Gandhi are more relevant than ever as nonviolent civil disobedience is making a comeback.

From Wall Street to Greece to Egypt to the West Bank, mass uprisings seem to be spreading around the globe. As a form of protest, civil disobedience has a noble lineage that includes Henry David Thoreau; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Cesar Chavez; and Nelson Mandela.
With news of the death of Libyan dictator Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi on October 20, the timing of Reza Aslan’s campus lecture could not have been more appropriate. Aslan, an internationally recognized expert on religion, politics and globalization and best-selling author of “No God but god” and “Beyond Fundamentalism,” was on campus that day to discuss the changing political landscape of the Middle East.

Professor Yasmin Saikia joined the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict as the first holder of the Hardt-Nickachos Chair in Peace Studies. She grew up in the shadow of the 1971 Bangladesh war, inspiring a passion for peace that informs her teaching and research. The author of three books—including the just published, Women, War and the Making of Bangladesh—her work focuses on movements for peace and reconciliation that exist alongside conflicts at the intersection of religion, history and culture in South Asia.

Islam has been at the center of a global battle over the role of religion in public life. Is democracy the solution to religious extremism?

Reza Aslan, scholar, public intellectual, and internationally acclaimed author will take on this question in a free lecture at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, October 20 in the College of Law’s Great Hall on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus.

On September 11, 2001, the term “global jihad” burst upon the public consciousness. For Adbullahi Gallab, who began documenting the rise of Islamism in the 1980s as a journalist his native Sudan, it was a term that was all too familiar.

Congratulations are in order for this year’s Undergraduate Research Fellows at the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict. The center’s undergraduate research program provides students with an opportunity to take a special seminar with the Center’s director, Linell Cady, and participate on research projects with ASU faculty. By engaging in this kind of cross-disciplinary, cross-regional work, students gain a much richer understanding of the complex dynamics of religion and conflict as well as important experience in the research process.

CSRC's 9/11 panel focus of news coverage, video

What did 9/11 mean? What did we learn about religion, politics and violence? Did the death of Osama bin Laden and the revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa signal a shift in the dynamics of religion and public life? You can read news coverage of the Center's panel discussion on 9/11 at the following links or view the panel via the Center's iTunes site:

Unlike the typical incoming freshman, Steven Cottam had no doubt in his mind that he was making the right decision when he declared religious studies as his major when applying to Arizona State University.

Having written a research paper on English translations of the Qur’an in high school, Steven knew well before most students what his major would entail, but even he could not predict that he would end up in the field of religion and conflict.

Now, a decade has passed – 10 years and 2 wars of remembering, analyzing, worrying and grieving since 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and flew them into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

For the past six years, undergraduate research fellows with the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict have been working with ASU faculty, providing research assistance as part of the Fellows program. Students selected as fellows take a special class on the study of religion and conflict and, as part of the class, work with faculty as research interns, providing assistance on all aspects of faculty research projects. The Center is currently surveying faculty for research projects that may benefit from the support of these undergraduate students.

Learning the legacy of war

ASU Research Stories -- Red dirt bears the imprints of the soles of his shoes. The scent of hard-boiled eggs and corn from the street vendors wafts in the air. Chickens in the dirt lot at the corner cluck away.

For Scott Ross, this is a new and unfamiliar country. The streets in Uganda are half-paved, and most of the commuters travel by bicycle.

“You look different, so people assume you’re a foreigner,” he says of his arrival to this East African country. “They constantly ask you what you are doing here.”

The death this past week of Osama bin Laden is a stark reminder of the role that religion and conflict has played, and will continue to play, in the lives of today’s students—most of whom came of age in the post-9/11 world. To prepare these students for the increasingly complex role that religion plays both in the world, the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict created an interdisciplinary certificate program.

Nine students were on hand to receive their certificates at an awards ceremony that took place at the center’s offices in West Hall on April 27.

His research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of international relations, comparative politics, and human rights. His research seeks to understand the conflicts between international legal institutions and nation-states that have ensued with the expansion of international humanitarian and human rights law. He is particularly interested in the political and philosophical battles between international war crimes tribunals and states implicated in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Warner and Walker on "Thinking about the Role of Religion in Foreign Policy"

In her latest article “Thinking about the Role of Religion in Foreign Policy: A Framework for Analysis” co-authored with Stephen G. Walker, Carolyn M. Warner outlines a new theoretical framework for the analysis of religion and foreign policy. Despite the increased attention to religion in international relations the scholarly landscape in relation to these issues is yet relatively unexplored, especially with regards to the role of religion in the foreign policies of states.

Religion, Revolution and Gender: Faculty Seminars Catalyze Insight

“Liberty has been planted here and the more it is attacked, the more it grows…these violent attacks upon the woman in the wilderness [America] may possibly be some of the last efforts…of the man of sin.”

As seen in the fiery rhetoric of preacher Samuel Sherwood during the American Revolution, people have long tried to connect religion and revolution. How are we to understand this connection? What are the dynamics through which religion promotes or prevents political change?

Author Bruce Feiler is back from “Walking the Bible” and is roaming the country, tracing Moses’ footsteps. But in his eagerness to make the prophet into a unifying symbol, he misses the true complexity of the relationship between religion and the secular in America.

Is it time for progressives, religious and nonreligious, to move toward a strategic acceptance of religious language in the public square? Or should efforts be focused on adding bricks to the wall of church/state separation?
