No visit to San Miguel de Allende is complete without a Sunday tour to see inside San Miguel’s best homes. Tour departs noon, every Sunday, Insurgentes 25. This week we visit the following houses:

Casa de Las Ranas

The New York Times described the home of Visionary Artist Anado McLauchlin and Art Historian Richard Schultz, “It’s nothing so static as pigment on a surface — it’s a force. “ The LA Times concluded, “It’s the Happiest House in San Miguel”. Welcome to a visual wonderland, a kaleidoscope of whimsy, delight, and colorful chaos. The exterior of the home is awash with playful mosaics, found objects, murals and more. Enter the house and you are immersed in a dancing fanciful dream of color, design and Outsider Art. More mosaics, fanciful collections of the unordinary greet your eye. Painted mosaic doors lead to rooms taking the viewer to a new level of wonder and fancy. Quite possibly the largest boveda ceiling in San Miguel crowns the Master bedroom. This house is not only a home but also an art installation that has been covered in the world press from Mexico to Bahrain. Come immerse yourself in a Visionary Wonderland of Joy.

Chapel of Jimmy Ray

The Gallery at the Chapel of Jimmy Ray is a tremendously fanciful folly created by Anado McLauchlin. Jimmy Ray is a mythical character that Anado has been flirting with in his art for over 30 years. The Gallery area includes three buildings: Casa Kali, the recently completed office, a composting toilet which is actually a thrilling circular “throne” and the Chapel (Gallery) itself. In building the Gallery compound, Anado revels in the opportunity to be able to create a living ever expanding homage to the Outlander Tradition of Visionary Art. Already thousands of bottles have been used in constructing the three building that make up this magical compound…thousands more bottles have been stockpiled for future walls and sculptural whimsy. Anado combines these recycled materials with intricate mosaic work using local Talavera tiles along with multitudes of sea shells, mirrors and found objects.

House of The Flowers

The owners of this house arrived in San Miguel 13 years ago. They were smitten with the town and bought a rustic, dilapidated 14-bedroom “hotel” with concrete beds. None of the bedrooms had windows! The room rates were 70 pesos per night! With great vision the house was redesigned and now is a light-filled, fascinating home. The flower-filled garden makes you think you are in Giverny! The living room/dining room area is covered by what may be the longest boveda ceiling in San Miguel. All the furniture and tinwork were made in San Miguel by local artisans. Rooms are filled with an eclectic collection of Mexican folk art, as well as collectibles from around the world. The all-glass, jaw-dropping master bedroom on the third floor has views encompassing most of San Miguel’s downtown church domes.

Mixture of the legacy of two cultures, the native and the Spanish, the Capillas de Indios were built around the 17th century, as a ceremonial and religious centres in the surrounding communities to San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo, now witnesses of the history and customs that native families have preserved to the present. Visiting this rural tourist route, with six chapels, one in each community, is not only to admire the architecture but enjoy the festivities, legends, gastronomy and the history of these places.

Take the libramiento Manuel Zavala to the Bicentenario bridge to continue to the train station. Take the road to La Cieneguita cruise and the 51 State Highway. Continue straight towards Atotonilco. When the asphalt road ends and thake the road until you reach the next cruise, turn to the left and go by the Río Laja to the Montecillo of Nieto community, where the first chapel is.

Lo que no sabías de El Señor de La Conquista/What you didn’t know about Our Lord of the Conquest

There are two known versions of the origin of the Lord of the Conquest festivity. In the late 1500s, according to one version, two human-sized figures honoring the Lord of the Conquest were made out of corn cane paste by Tarascan Indians in Pátzcuaro. Two Franciscan friars, taking the statues to San Miguel and San Felipe, were attacked and killed by a group of Chichimecas at the Puente de Calderón (Calderón Bridge). The two figures were thought lost, but were found later by another group of Chichimeca Indians, already Catholic converts, who then took the statues to San Miguel and San Felipe.

The other version says that according to Chichimeca descendant Jesús Enrique González Morales the original figure was found by one of his ancestors, who hid it in a cave. According to González the statues at the San Miguel Parroquia and San Felipe are replicas.

By Betsy Bowman

On Saturday, March 3, the Center for Global Justice will visit GAIA, an educational organization in the eco-village named Los Carrizos in Sosnavar in rural San Miguel. GAIA, the Interdisciplinary Environmental Action Group, is devoted to promoting and teaching ecologically sustainable alternatives for rural farmers through its programs and projects. The founders of GAIA, the Caldera family, live there and are regional leaders in sustainable, low-tech methods of water conservation and use of solar energy. Their home is in effect a demonstration center of these technologies that can be applied to rural homes to make them more sustainable. They use and have on display photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, low-tech water saving systems such as grey water recycling, biological filters, a rainwater catchment system, dry toilets, and also solar stoves, solar water heaters, and the latest in environmentally sound adobe construction materials and techniques.

Travel: GAIA, ecologically sustainable hamlet. Sat, Mar 3, 8:30am. The Center for Global Justice, Calzada de la Luz 42. 450 pesos

Water scarcity might well be the global crisis of this century. It will in all likelihood motivate everyone to learn about and use these water conservation and solar technologies. They’re not just for country homes or farmers… they are for every home. Even in cities, we can put solar water heaters on our roof; we can catch rainwater, and we can even put a wind turbine and solar panels on the roof to generate electricity.

Marta and Citlali Caldera are also experts in medicinal plants. They will describe the medicinal plants, and explain the processes used to make medicines and creams.

There is no need to introduce Marianne Koerner, the former Broadway cabaret performer who has given sold-out solo concerts in San Miguel, mainly at Bellas Artes, for the last 10 years, nor Michael Sudheer, who has been singing and acting here for the same amount of time. But what is new about Two for the Road, a cabaret run of six performances, is that they will be performing together for the first time. Michael Sudheer, who lives in San Miguel all year round, and Marianne Koerner, who spends six months in Sag Harbor, New York, met in an aerobics class here. “Fast forward 10 years,” said Michael, “and I get an email from Marianne, who was in Sag Harbor, asking me if I would like do a joint concert with her. I was honored and flattered, but I thought, has she made a mistake? Does she really mean me?” “Why?” interrupts Marianne. “Am I such a ‘diva’?” A year ago Marianne had acute bronchitis and was unable to sing. She has recovered and regained her voice, but didn’t feel quite up to a solo concert. “I didn’t sing at all last year and I really missed it. I’m so glad to be back.” “We really surprised ourselves about how well we work together. We connect on many levels, not least in being able to laugh when we don’t get it right first time,” said Michael. “Except when he tries to be Frank Sinatra. Then I have to step in and stop him,” Marianne said, as the two bantered back and forth like a couple of stand-up comedians. Where did the title Two for the Road come from? “I was emailing from New York to Michael, who had just returned to Mexico from a trip to Prague,” said Marianne, “and everyone who comes to our concert has traveled from somewhere else to San Miguel, which we all know isn’t the easiest place to get to, so we decided to do a concert about travel.” “Compared to my solo concerts,” said Michael, “ the songs are better known, old favorites such as “April in Paris,” “A Foggy Day in London Town,” “ I Like New York in June,” “Come Fly With Me.” “We have six duets,” said Marianne, “and each of us will also have five solo songs.” After a long career on Broadway and in television, Marianne continues to perform and to teach singing and vocal presentation. Michael, who starred in Cabaret and Stop the World I Want to Get Off, has had a one-man show for the last two years for the benefit of various charities, as is this production —the net proceeds of the first three performances will go to Mujeres en Cambio, and the last three to Pro Musica. Those who have seen the solo concerts of either Michael or Marianne are in for a double treat, particularly if you belong to the school that believes the old songs are the best songs — “Fly me to the Moon,” “ Bali Hai,” “ Let’s Take a Walk Around the Block”. Reservations at Cafe Baile are a must. The show starts at 8pm and you can come for drinks at 7:30 or dinner from 6 on. Reservations can be made at baile_cafe@hotmail.com or by phone at 415-152-0095.

San Miguel de Allende is a good place to make friends for those who are travelling by themselves, it does not matter if they are sociable or not, somebody in the city will start an informal conversation, talking about everything and nothing.

Exercising a good way for starting a new day

If visitors love running or walk through green areas or even take their pet for a walk, Parque Juárez is the option. Strollers can meet new people, with common interests (exercising, love for the environment or pets). You can start a deeper conversation and get a friend for breakfast.

Café la Ventana Sollano 11 Centro. Mon—Sun 8am—9pm

To get one´s strength back, a sandwich, juice or a coffee to be awakened can be getting at the window of “La Ventana”, a small restaurant where the atmosphere invites to stay.

During the day

¿Why not take care of the environment while you are visiting the city? There are many places nearby to el centro, where visitors can go by bicicle, such as Fábrica la Aurora, which host an immense number of art works and artists, a tour of the main churches or even historical houses.

Time for lunch Café Rama. Nemesio Diez 7 Centro. 12pm—11pm

It is a small restaurant meant for you and one or more friends, it is a tranquil and nice space. On weekends there are special events.

Let`s dance in Arthur and Murray Hernández Macías 68 Centro.

If the effort in the previous activities for getting friends is not enough then get ready to have a dance class in Arthur and Murray. Within the academy there is a restaurant offering 2×1 in Classic Margaritas! ¡Vamos!

Tips

El Sindicato is the plece for connecting with Mexican people, they project movies in Tuesday and Friday.

Teatro Santa Ana, is the place for connecting with foreigners. There are movies projection too.

A House and Garden tour by la Bblioteca is a good option also.

Ópera de San Miguel’s Artistic Director, John Bills, this week announced the 12 finalists who will compete in Concurso San Miguel 2012, ÓSM’s annual nationwide search for Mexico’s most promising young opera singers. The contest, to be held on March 3 at Teatro Ángela Peralta, is made possible through the generosity of many private contributors and local businesses, particularly Los Ángeles de la Ópera, a group of major donors who recognize the importance of encouraging and supporting Mexico’s native-grown talent. Due to their extraordinary generosity this year’s prizes total 150,000 pesos, which will be used by winners for advanced study and professional expenses, and the top prizewinner will also receive a debut performance with the Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra.

Opera contest, Opera San Miguel 2012. Sat, Mar 3, 8pm. Teatro Ángela Peralta. 350/250/150 pesos

“We have an extraordinary field of young artists to present in San Miguel this year,” said Bills “perhaps the strongest overall since we began this effort in 2008.” This year for the first time the preliminary round of auditions was held here in San Miguel de Allende rather than Mexico City. More than 200 young singers from 22 states in Mexico, and Mexican nationals studying abroad in the US, Canada, and Europe, applied to compete in the first round, representing a 21 percent increase over previous years. Then came the daunting task of choosing 12 finalists. Bills says, “We could easily have chosen 40 singers for the finals and been proud to present each one to our audience in San Miguel.” The 12 finalists will arrive here on February 26 to begin an intensive week which will include master classes, musical, dramatic and diction coaching, and this year for the first time, group and individual career counseling sessions. The week climaxes on Saturday, March 3, with a grand public concert and final round at which the prizewinners will be announced.

The finalists of Concurso San Miguel 2012 are sopranos Vanessa Vera Amaro, Lorena Flores Ruiz, Claudia Rodríguez Vidal, and Adriana Valdés Santibañez; mezzo-soprano Zayra Ruiz Bermejo; tenors Antonio Albores Máttar, Juan Bosco Zavala, and César Delgado López; baritones Carlos López Santillán, German Olvera Cornejo, and Óscar Velásquez Lara; and bass José Reynoso Martínez.

Bills also announced special invitees for Concurso night. “In recent years we have chosen several singers who because of age or special circumstances we were not prepared to include as finalists, but who nevertheless show extraordinary promise, to perform for our audience during the judges’ final deliberations,” he said. “These are singers who deserve our encouragement, and who will be included in all of our Concurso week activities. We know the audience will agree that they are sure to be contenders in future years. In fact, Carlos López, a finalist this year, was a special invitee in 2010.” The special invitees for 2012 will be sopranos Betsabe Brito Urdapilleta and Karen Gardeazabal Huitron; baritone Jorge Espino Martínez; and bass Daniel Noyola Castro.

“We feel this group of extraordinary young singers affirms the breadth of talent that is to be found in Mexico today, the importance of our Concurso in the musical life of the nation, and the exciting future for opera in this country and around the world,” said Bills.

Tickets are now on sale at the theatre box office for this traditionally sold-out event.

The award-winning Cuarteto Latinoamericano, comprised of the three Bitrán brothers—cellist Alvaro and violinists Saúl and Arón—along with violinist Javier Montiel, is considered the preeminent string quartet in Latin America. Pro Musica is delighted to welcome the Cuarteto back to San Miguel after last year’s sold out concerts. This year, the Cuarteto will perform two concerts at St. Paul’s Church.

Concert: Pro Musica Concert Series, Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Sat & Sun, Feb 25 & 26, 5pm. St. Paul’s Church. 100/150/250 pesos. www.promusicasma.com. info@promusica.com

The Bitrán brothers began their careers as international child prodigies. Saúl began studying violin at age six in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and continued at the National Conservatory in Mexico City and the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv. Alvaro began playing cello in Chile at the age of seven, and plays an instrument made in Vienna in 1817 by Martin Stoss. Aron also studied at the National Conservatory of Mexico, and their founding partner, violinist Javier Montiel, achieved distinction at the age of 19, playing with the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico.

Formed in 1982, the Cuarteto has recorded nearly the entire Latin American repertoire for string quartet, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002, as well as for a Latin Grammy. It has performed as a soloist ensemble with many esteemed orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, the Orquesta Filarmónica de la Ciudad de México, the Dallas Symphony and the Simón Bolívar Orquesta de Venezuela, as well as touring extensively in the Americas, Europe, Japan, China, New Zealand and Israel. From 1988 until 2008, the Cuarteto was in residence at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2008, the quartet left to serve as quartet-in-residence at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

The ensemble has garnered much acclaim for its unique style and powerful technical skills, and is generally credited with exerting a profound influence on the next generation of Latin American string players. The Washington Post describes the Cuarteto as, “Matchless in tonal magnitude…tuneful fluency and concentrated teamwork.”

It is with this in mind that we will enjoy Friday’s program, featuring the Samuel Barber Adagio from Quartet Op. 11, Franz Schubert’s Quartettsatz, and Movement for Quartet in C Minor D 703, George Gershwin’s Lullaby and Maurice Ravel’s Quartet in F Major.

Saturday’s program will focus on W. A Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor K 546, followed by Alexander Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 and Johannes Brahms’ Quartet Op. 51, No. 2 in A Minor.

These two concerts by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano undoubtedly will bring another exciting weekend of top quality music making to Pro Musica’s 2012 season. Pro Musica’s concerts regularly sell out in high season and we urge you to buy your tickets early. Tickets are available at La Tienda in the Biblioteca, Insurgentes 25; La Conexión, Aldama 3; BajioGo, Jesus 11; at St.Paul’s Church office, Cardo 6, weekdays, 10am-4pm; and at the door half an hour before the concert.

You can help Pro Musica continue to bring great musicians like the Cuarteto Latinoamericano to San Miguel by becoming a Patron Member, from as little as US$100 a year, which includes a range of benefits such as free tickets and suppers with the artists. Part of your donation also goes to fund Pro Musica’s Education Outreach Program, which provides weekly music lessons to over 60 children in disadvantaged areas of the campo around San Miguel. Details of all Pro Musica’s concerts and Patron Membership are available, www.promusicasma.com, or contact info@promusicasma.com.

To quote the Cowardly Lion, “Unusual weather we’re having, ain’t it?” For anyone disappointed by the cancellation due to rain of the much-anticipated concert “Songs of Love and Heartbreak, from Billie Holiday to Elvis” featuring Boston-based jazz vocalist Toni Ballard and local rock and blues favorite Stephanie Turner, there is good news. The concert is BYOP—Bring Your Own Picnic. No food or beverages will be sold at the event, so patrons are invited to bring their favorite food and drinks.

Music: Songs of Love and Heartbreak Featuring Toni Ballard & Stephanie Turner. Sun, Feb 26, 4-6pm. Gustos Gathering Grounds Amphitheater, Mezquite 7.5. 150 pesos

Gustos Gathering Grounds is a private residence in colonia Guadiana, one of the most beautiful and conveniently located neighborhoods in San Miguel, only a 12-minute flat walk to Centro. Aspects of the grounds were created to share the exploration of art, culture, relaxation and celebration with others. In addition to the main house, the property includes an intimate amphitheater for outdoor events, a small art studio, a classroom area and a one-bedroom apartment. Casa GGG was completed in September of 2009. The artistic and cultural events are managed by Backyard Productions.

Toni and Stephanie will each perform with four of San Miguel’s most in-demand musicians: Ken Basman on guitar, Doug Robinson on piano, Beto González on bass, and Miguel Favero on percussion. Toni will perform jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, including “Night and Day,” “We’ll Be Together Again” and “Make Someone Happy.” Stephanie will sing such blues and rock classics as “Suspicious Minds,” “These Boots Are Made for Walking” and “When Will I Be Loved,” with Toni joining in on harmony on a couple of tunes.

Toni Ballard, who is profiled in jazz writer Scott Yanow’s book The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide (Backbeat Press, available from Amazon), is a Chicago native who has been singing jazz in New England for over 25 years and has performed with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, the White Heat Swing Orchestra, the Boston Big Band and the Ryles Jazz Orchestra, including an appearance in 2002 at the Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival. Toni was one of 10 singers invited to perform in New York City at the “American Song Stylists” concert, headlined by Shirley Horn. Her 1997 CD I’m Your Pal features jazz guitar icon Larry Coryell.

Stephanie Turner, at 23, traveled through Europe by train with her guitar, playing for change in the streets. She continued writing songs and playing them in coffeehouses and bars, and dabbled in theater and performance art back in Providence, Rhode Island. She followed the call of the road to the west coast to Portland, Oregon, where she combined her music with fire-eating and gained fame as “The Fire-Eating Folksinger.” At age 29, Stephanie embarked on an around-the-world trip and wound up falling in love with Mexico, spending a year and meeting her future husband.
