Sorry this one was a little late. My old-new hosting company was unamused with my bandwidth consumption. Hopefully my new-new one can take it. It took a couple of days to migrate everything over, but now we’re up and running again.

In the Atheist News this week we talk about the new Pew research poll that finds that atheists are stupid and don’t know what they are talking about, happy good fun news from Uganda, a heartwarming story about a decent pastor helping out people made homeless by hurricane Katrina, the fact that Iran is loosening up a bit, news that Jews have decided to follow the spirit of the law, rather than the letter of the law and finally a Jail that is really trying its best to help its inmates by educating them.

And yes, everything I just wrote is a complete and utter fabrication.

We once again start with the news and leave the letters for last as an experiment. I am putting up a poll, the results of which MAY VERY POSSIBLY HAVE SOME EFFECT MAYBE on when we do the news and when we read the letters. Go check it out.

I am kind of aggro on this weeks show. I am also kind of waffley. Lots of stuff to talk about if you want to chime in. Poor Richard attempts to be stolid. We discuss Quran burning some more and most of the letters this week concern that very question. We got some really awesome responses.

I also tried to edit out the background noise, but there are people painting my house and I couldn’t get it all. So there is some ladder noise that escaped my wrathful deletion. I did manage to cut the show from two hours to an hour and a half, though; saving myself the trouble of officially changing the name of the show to the “Atheist Snooze Podcast.”

Also, I babble on about the Pope and his implicit involvement with the church cover-up of child sex abuse, but I do a terrible job explaining what the hell I am talking about. This is what I am talking about.

After that, we do the atheist news dance and as a change of pace we save the listener mail for the end of the show. Thank you to everyone who wrote in regarding the topic of rape. I think two weeks is probably enough torture to the people who just don’t care to hear any more about it, so I decided to not get into it this show. I’ll continue to reply via e-mail and may even post a few up on the site and we can talk about it there.

As you may have heard, my computer finally gave up the ghost and went to live with Jesus in heaven. That, combined with my vacation made for a long wait for this podcast, sorry! We did start the show off with some pretty big news: I will no longer be co-hosting the Chariots of Iron podcast. This is probably actually not news to most of you as the guys announced it a couple of weeks ago much better than I could have, but just in case you hadn’t heard, I’m going to stick to doing just one podcast for a while and Eli and Lamar are going to keep the wheels turning over on Chariots of Iron. I hadn’t had a chance to listen to their last episode by the recording date of this show, so I had no idea that they threw me a wake! I only hope my actual funeral is as touching as it probably won’t be so well attended. Gracias amigos, salute!

Anyhow, it’s not too bad for you guys, there will still be two podcasts featuring overly-opinionated, under-qualified nerds floating around out there for your listening enjoyment. Besides, we have agreed to join forces once again if Oprah gives us a daytime talk-show.

At the next large atheist event Richard and I attend, we will conduct a foot race of indeterminate length for Charity. I know that it doesn’t directly have much to do with atheists or atheism in general, but one of the benefits of quitting smoking and becoming a grumpy jerk is that there are a lot more things that really piss me off all of the sudden. So, I am embracing my inner jerk.

Surprisingly, Richard doesn’t necessarily agree with me on the whole circumcision thing, so we actually have a half-way decent conversation about it rather than just agreeing with each-other incessantly. It didn’t erupt into a full blown argument, though, which would have rocked.

Well golly. It’s been a while hasn’t it?

In my defense, only most of the wait for this show is due to the paralyzing haze of lethargy that has settled on me since I quit smoking. Once we got it recorded, my power went out and my computer decided it wouldn’t start up again for several days. Yes, yes, I keep saying I’m going to fix it, but then, a few days later, it starts up again and works for another three months and I can’t justify spending money on a new parts when the old ones work like… 75% of the time.

I’m pretty sure my computer gets more annual vacation time than the average Teamster. I’m kind of jealous.

If you aren’t an American, you probably already know who Thomas Jefferson is and can skip ahead a bit, but for those of you educated aboard this sinking ship of a country I live in, Thomas Jefferson was a humanist and enlightenment thinker that penned the Declaration of Independence, the Jefferson Bible and served as a US congressman twice, was the second governor of Virginia, was the US Ambassador to France and aided the French Revolution, served as the first Secretary of State under George Washington, the second Vice President of the United States under John Adams and served as the third President of the United States during which time he bought the Louisiana Territory (which INCLUDED PARTS OF NORTHERN TEXAS, you fucking cocksuckers) from France, DOUBLING SIZE OF THE UNITED STATES. After that he founded the University of Virginia, which he designed himself.

And if after all that, if you still doubt he was a patriot, he DIED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY.

So, in honor of one of the most forward-thinking men in history, I have decided to against writing a summary for the Atheist News podcast this week. Rather, I would like to honor one of the greatest testaments to free-thought ever committed to paper: the US Declaration of Independence. I’m not going to post it in its entirety, in fact, I am not going to post anything from the actual Declaration; you can find that easily enough online (and if you haven’t read it, I strongly urge to you to so.) What I am going to do is post a snippet of Jefferson’s first draft of the Declaration that was so radical it was ultimately struck from the final draft by his peers in Congress, despite his protests.

Also, Brother Richard discusses his recent experience at the American Atheist’s convention in Atlanta and his visit’s with Nate Phelps and James Morrow.

Nate Phelps is the estranged son of Fred Phelps. Brother Richard has promised us a transcript of the speech he gave at the conference.

James Morrow is a fantastic author that writes irreverently on the topics of religion, philosophy, family, truth and other really big subjects. He also apparently has two new books out that I can’t wait to read.

In the news, we talk candidly about how terrifying Texas is and how awesome the Iowa Supreme court is, I imply loosely that my lack of understanding about a given cultural topic has no relevance what-so-ever as to it’s level of retardosity and Richard talks about his experiences with the late Bishop Earl Paulk, none of which, surprisingly, seemed to include wenching. Then, we have a good chuckle over the sudden and irrevocable misfortunes of the six stooges of the terrorist world, we finally have record of the stupidest plea-bargain ever accepted by a secular government and we recite a shocking expose regarding scandalous Muslim women showing mad ankles.

We close the show up with some more listener mail (this one is pretty classic,) and Richard talks a bit about his new side project.

This week, we also have a listener letter in which we address the possibility that Catholic Priests are nothing more than a cabal of kiddy diddlers. Or maybe something worse.

Don’t look for the stereo version of the show this week, from the e-mails I received, mono is simply more practical. Yes, I know. Stereo was way more awesome, but a large number of listeners do, in fact, listen with only one ear. Stereo makes the show unlistenable for them. For several practical reasons I am unable to do both, so mono it is. Thanks to everyone who wrote in to share their opinion.
