With the overall match tied at four, Westmont juniors Kristen Lee and Christina Klein pulled off a come-from-behind win at number three doubles to secure a 5-4 victory over #13 Point Loma Nazarene (8-12, 4-5 GSAC) on Saturday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. The win over the Sea Lions was the second of the year for the #16 Warriors who improved to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The victory could help secure a place for the Warriors in the upcoming NAIA National Women's Tennis Tournament next month in Mobile, Alabama.

"Even though we played with a lot of nerves, this team showed maturity by resisting succumbing to their nervousness," said Kathy LeSage, the very delighted head coach.

Senior Kyle Godfrey and freshman Aaron Cooke earned wins at number one and two singles respectively, but it was not enough as Westmont Men's Tennis (5-12, 1-7) fell to #11 Point Loma Nazarene (9-9, 3-5) on Saturday at Westmont's Abbott Tennis Courts.

Godfrey claimed the first set 7-5 over Point Loma's Joel Myers and then was awarded the victory when Myers retired. Cooke battled to a 7-6 victory in his first set against Curt Wheeler, winning the tiebreaker 7-5. In the second set, Wheeler came back for a 6-4 win. That sent the number two singles match into a super-breaker which Cooke won 10-5.

Fifty or more folks gathered in a class room on the Dos Pueblos High School campus to celebrate as senior Sean Park signed a letter of intent to play for Westmont Men's Basketball beginning this fall. Park, who helped lead Dos Pueblos to an undefeated Channel League season this year, received an ovation as he signed his name to the papers.

"Westmont had the right combination of basketball and academics," said Park when asked why he had chosen the liberal arts college located in the Montecito foothills. "I have been working out with players from the team for quite awhile now and everyone has been really great to me. No one has shown me a scent of being mad at me like I was coming in and trying to take their spot. All the players were so kind to me and that was a major part of my decision."

Westmont Baseball came up short against The Master's (25-12-1, 13-12) at Russ Carr Field on Wednesday afternoon in a game which featured 26 runs, 25 hits and 10 errors, 54 base runners and 22 men left on base. Four home runs by the Mustangs - including a grand slam by catcher Tyler Diamond and a three-run inside the park home run by second baseman Joseph Chavarria - led to a 17-9 Warrior loss. Diamond added a solo shot in the ninth inning and designated hitter Caleb Mintz recorded a home run in the fourth.

Tied at two runs each going into the bottom of the fourth, Westmont (7-24, 3-22) scored three unearned runs to take a 5-2 lead. But the advantaged was short lived as Westmont gave up six runs in the top of the fifth, including Chavarria's round-tripper, to go up 8-5.

On Thursday afternoon, Rebecca Mouw called a meeting of the Westmont Women's Soccer team where she announced that she will not return for a fourth year as head coach.

"I feel really good about the consensus which (Athletic Director) Dave (Wolf) and I have come to," said Mouw. "As I have been thinking about the past few months, I have been evaluating what I want to be doing with my life and where I want to be going. I feel at peace with the things that have come together to bring this decision to closure."

Mouw took over the reigns of the women's soccer program on July 1, 2005, posting an overall record of 35-16-7 in three years and taking the Warriors to two national tournaments.

In her first season, Mouw led the Warriors to a record of 12-3-4 and an appearance in the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament in Olathe, Kansas. In 2006, Mouw's Warriors finished second in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings with a record of 7-2-1 and claimed a national ranking of eleventh at season's end. Westmont advanced to the quarterfinals of the national tournament where they were defeated 1-0 by Azusa Pacific.
