Today is going to hit on a question I get almost every day from readers – the extremely broad question of how to get higher search engine rankings. Unfortunately, there is no single answer to this question.

It’s one that would take hours to properly discuss, and there are hundreds of books on the topic. But, I can definitely show you the basics and tell you what you need to be working on – all things you’ll go into in further detail in the future.

What Search Engines Want?

Google is the de facto search engine, meaning what they want, we give them. Yahoo! and Bing are great tools, but they just don’t have the volume that Google enjoys, and for the most part the algorithms are very similar across the board.

As for what Google wants, they’ve never been privy to tell us their search rankings, but we have been able to speculate quite a bit – here’s a list of what we do know:

* Inbound Links – The original algorithm that made Google what it is today is the one that taught the web how to rank sites by how many links they get from other sites.In particular, Google ranks you by the links you get from authority, reference, and related sites.

They don’t like link exchanges, they don’t like link farms and they definitely don’t like empty pages with unrelated content linking to you. They do, however, like .gov and .edu sites, high Page Rank sites, and content rich sites on your niche linking to you.

* Keyword Density – Keyword density is far less of a factor than it once was, but it still stands out as a big part of the process.

You’ll need to ensure keywords appear in your Title Tags, META tags, your headings on the page, and within inbound links you have pointing at your site. Proximity and placement on your page are also important as it shows the relative value of that keyword.

* Outbound Links – Links are fantastic coming in, but they can be valuable going out too. If you’re referencing quality, related sites in your niche, it will show that you’re intent on providing users with value and information.

* Clean HTML – Messy HTML that isn’t verified and has bad tags will not necessarily hurt you, but it sure won’t help. There are conventions here that are too complex for a short message, but you’ll want to have a programmer clean up any code you use on your sites if it’s old or doesn’t perform well.

* Navigation Structure – Your pages should all be linked so that you can reach any other page on your site with ease. Remove any dead-end links, and don’t have any links nested more than 3 pages deep in the structure.

* Content Quality – More and more, Google’s spiders are learning how to tell if your content is of a decent quality.

Using LSI (latent semantic indexing) and other natural language filters to gauge the way your keywords are laid out and how the content is formatted, they can tell if you’re writing for a ranking or for useful content.

The result is that most pages need to be at least 400 words now, keyword density needs to stay below 4% and content needs to be topic related.

Getting high search rankings is a long process that requires an expert eye for content development and keyword planning. However, if you do it right, you’ll find infinitely more value in your organic search listings than any single PPC campaign could ever provide as traffic will pour in repeatedly without any additional cost.

It’s no secret that today’s technology rich world is an informational geyser. Every day, thousands of sources of new data and information pour into your inbox and desktop, all intent on providing you with new insights and ideas for how to boost you home business Internet marketing tactics.

But, in many of those cases, the result is simply overload. How much information can we actually absorb from day to day and even then, how much of that information do we need?

Decide What Information You Need!

The first thing I tell home based small business entrepreneurs suffering from information overload is to sit down and make a list of what they actually need. You’d be surprised how much information you don’t actually need to have to make money from home.

For example, if you’re subscribed to 25 different blogs about work from home company affiliate marketing, what do you actually get from those blogs each day? How many hours do you spend reading posts that you could be putting the tactics you’ve learned in the past to work?

The easiest way to measure the value of the information you bring in is to see if you actually use any of it for your top home based business. Many times, you’ll find that you don’t use it at all. Reading 200 articles a month about exciting new ways to create and use a blog to earn extra money from home doesn’t help you if you have yet to set up a single blog while starting a home based business.

So, remove any informational sources that only pile on more options for how to do something you have yet to do. A good trick is to have your favorite blogs on RSS feeds. Then, you can look at the posts together each day and determine which ones seem to hold the most value.

Choose 5-10 articles each day to read and stick to them. Even if there are 100 articles out there that have valuable information, you’ll never get anything done if you read them all. It defeats the purpose of having that home biz information.

What About Information Products?

An even bigger problem for information junkies is the allure of a new make money from home system or product that hits the market.

A lot of people who have the knowledge and tools needed to become truly effective at home based business affiliate marketers never get there because they spend more time reading new eBooks and pondering new systems rather than actually putting them to use.

My rule for this is simple. No matter how good a new product looks, or how low the price seems to be at the moment, don’t buy or read any new information products unless you’ve finished the one you’re currently working on.

And, when I say finish, I mean more than just reading all books and watching all the videos. I mean completely and utterly finished, having tried all the tricks and developed all the sites using the tools of the program you bought.

This is important, because too many people will get excited about a program, buy it and then find that they don’t like the way it works or that they are really excited about a different program.

They hop from one program to the next without ever investing the time needed to get anything done with the product in question. I don’t know about you – but I like to get my money’s worth out of something.

The key to information overload is to simply forget the information exists. I’m as big of a proponent of reading and learning as anyone you’ll ever meet, but if you continuously spend more hours a day researching and looking for new “tricks” you’ll never be able to put them to use.

Trust yourself and the knowledge you’ve gathered and jump into the deep end. You’ll be surprised how quickly you float and start to swim.

If you’ve been online any time since 2003, you’ve probably heard other marketers jabbering on and on about how important blogging is.

The platform, the action, and the readership are all incredibly valuable tools for anyone wanting to start their very own web business, but what exactly does a blog do and where does all that value come from?

Let’s take a closer look at what makes a blog such an incredibly powerful tool and why you pretty much have to have one.

What Blogging Does

A blog is a direct communication tool between you and your customers and readers. It allows you to communicate with them in a much more personal way than any single article ever could and it allows you to generate content on the fly.

Blogs are easy to use, without any complex technical tools in place and no programming knowledge necessary. You can install one in 5 minutes, write a post in the same way you would on a word processor, and update your theme and style in seconds, often times for free.

On the social side, blogs have built in tools to syndicate content all over the globe. Someone presses a button and they can have access to your posts from their phone, desktop and browser every day. They can also share with others easily, and they can write comments that you will have easy access to anytime, through your email.

Finally, there is the value a blog has in a search engine. Even if you’re not using a blog for your personal presentation, you’ll find that the platform is wonderful for linking, search engine friendly code, and easy to index pages. Google loves blogs and they make for easy site creation.

Creating Your Own Blog

So, with all that in mind, what does it mean to create your own blog? It all depends on what you’re doing and how you want to use your site, but in my opinion, you pretty much need to have a blog, regardless of its uses.

The majority of affiliate marketers like to have their names out there at some point in their careers, allowing them to network with other marketers and gain access to new products quicker. A blog allows you to do this more easily and to build lists of people who you can access when you gain first look at a new product.

Second, there is the fact that a blog is going to be the easiest tool you’ll ever use to build a site. If you’re thinking about putting together your first authority or review sites, using a blogging platform might be just what the doctor ordered.

They go together in minutes, take minimal programming, and allow for easy adding and indexing of new content later on, when you start tacking on new articles or reviews for Google.

Whatever you do, the goal of the blog should always be to facilitate conversation. If you’d rather create a for sale product or would rather have an authority site without any chance for feedback, you would be better suited with a plain HTML format that can be easily accessed from any PC.

At the end of the day, a blog is one of the fundamental tools of all Internet marketing. It isn’t a trendy tool that only a few tech-savvy users will pick up.

It’s one of the backbone tools of the game and it will allow you to quickly and easily access a wide range of potential new sales, regardless of the nice you’re currently marketing in.

Facebook, the king of the social networks, is highly valuable in today’s atmosphere of spam filters and overloaded email inboxes. It offers an immediate, direct way to contact prospects without having to use email, which often gets ignored or deleted.

Spam filters are notorious for pulling out messages, even when someone has legitimately opted into your at home based business list. They may not know how to or care enough to add you to the whitelist, and now you have an inactive subscriber. Facebook has no such problems.

The easiest way to do this is to treat it as an work from home company article that happens to be just 100 words long. Rather than jotting out random words to describe your Page, compose something truly useful.

* Product and Site Info on Your Wall – Make sure to mention your top home business site and products not only in your description, but on your wall and in your photos. The more often you mention it, the more saturated it will be in your Facebook profile and the more likely people will click back to your home business Internet marketing site.

If these descriptions are keyword rich, there is always a good chance for to show up in search as well.

* Post Often and Offer Value – I recommend you post on Facebook at least once a day. Even if you only post a short wall post with links back to your top home business blog, add something daily with value that your readers can take away from it.

The more consistently you can provide value, the more consistently you’ll receive referred fans and your page will grow that will greatly contribute to your ability to make money from home.

* Interact with People – As with any social network, you need to interact with people to get more fans. If someone sees your home biz page and see that you’re active on it, responding to comments and posting new information, they’re much more likely to give it a thumbs up!

* Utilize Facebook Apps – Apps that aggregate content are the best. You can have your Twitter posts appear on Facebook, or your Facebook posts appear on Twitter. You can have blog posts posted, or have your friends updated when a blog post is put up. Doing so will again, help your ability to earn extra money from home!

Look for Apps that will help reach more people and generate additional traffic automatically. Automation is always a wonderful thing.

* Use Social Ads – You can always buy advertising for the at home based business site as well. Facebook offers action based marketing that will only charge you when someone joins your Home Based Business Page. The cost can be higher, but the reward is equally high.

Make sure to create an original, targeted ad and use the demographic research tools in Facebook’s marketing platform to hit people you’re actually interested in paying for. Poor targeting can waste quite a bit of money on Facebook.

Facebook shouldn’t be ignored. It’s too powerful of a tool to be tossed aside and not used as often as possible. With that said, you’d better be prepared to generate as much traffic as you can as frequently as you can. There are over 600 million users out there, but a lot of those are businesses.

You already have plenty of competition whether you’ve been in business a long time or just starting a home based business. Treat Facebook as a valuable marketing platform and it will give you a lot of opportunities. Don’t treat it as just a social diversion.

   Affiliate marketing starts and ends with finding the right at home based business niche to market in. But how do you to pinpoint the most profitable niches. It’s pretty simple, really. You find a hotbed of buying activity and you plant yourself firmly there to market as many hot top home business products as possible to a very active market of potential customers.  

   It’s worked for hundreds of home based Internet marketing entrepreneurs who have become very, very rich. But, let’s face it – when you’re getting started, nothing is ever quite that easy.  

   So, I want to delve deeper into the idea of niche research, along with the mistakes that so many of us tend to make over and over again. Because, when you can eliminate those mistakes, life gets much easier and your ability to make money from home are more consistent.  

   The Niche Research No-Nos  

   First up, let’s take a closer look at what so many affiliate marketers starting a home based business do wrong. At the very top of the list, and something I’ve been preaching against for years is diversification. Of the super affiliates I’ve met, the vast majority (pretty much all of them, including myself), make their profits almost entirely from one or two niches.  

   Yup, that’s right, it’s exactly as it sounds. They spend hours a day working on just dog training, or just marriage advice or just weight loss. They find a profitable audience and they hit them up over and over again with different products, sites, and selling points to earn extra money from home.  

   Second, as you might have guessed, they stuck to the big niches – the evergreen ones that have always been solid money makers. Sure, they experiment a little bit, but only enough to check out other niches, not so much that they dilute their income from big one or two niches. Which niches are considered the “big niches”?  

   Weight loss, making money, satellite TV on PC, muscle gain, self help, anti-spyware, Forex, and money online. People are always looking for new products in these niches, so you cannot cannibalize your sales, nor can you run out of warm leads. Of those niches, weight loss and fitness are the biggest across the board, with making money coming in at a close second.  

   Finding Your Top Home Based Business Niches and Products  

   Of course, just saying “try out the stuff that works” isn’t very helpful, so I want to go into a bit more detail on what you can promote and how to make your selection. Lucky for you, I have a couple of methods I like to use that have always been highly successful for me.  

   In terms of finding product ideas, I usually stick to Clickbank and Amazon. On occasion, I will also use Google to review possible affiliate networks in greater depth.  

   Amazon.com Research  

   Let’s start with Amazon.com. I start here because I want to first find a work from home company niche that has a large buying base. You can always find a product in Clickbank with high gravity, but even before that I want to identify the breadth of a potential audience first. You’ll see why very shortly.  

   To start with, visit Amazon.com and start reviewing products and topics in niches that you are interested in. This is very important, because you’ll be spending a lot of your time investing in that niche, especially if it becomes one of your big two niches.   

   So, be sure it’s something you’re willing to write about and market extensively for months to come. If you could care less about weight loss or are afraid of dogs, those might not be the best paths to success.  

   With that in mind, start searching on Amazon for books, products, and other home based small business niche products. Your goal here is to find products with at least 20 reviews. Why just 20 reviews?  

   Considering the fact that Amazon estimates only 1 in 1000 people actually review something they buy from their site, a product with 20 reviews is likely to have been purchased by at least 20,000 people – that’s a huge market, especially if it’s just one product in an information niche.  

   If you can find multiple products in the same niche that all have 20+ niches, you’ve hit the jackpot. It doesn’t matter if the niche has 100 products or just 2; if there are people buying products, it’s a good niche. You don’t need to do any keyword searching, competitor research, or product searches, because you know you’ve found a good one.  

   Moving to Clickbank  

   With that in mind, it’s time to find a product that you can actually market. In general, I don’t recommend promoting physical products on Amazon. With only a 5% commission (to start), you’d only make $1 on a $20 book, and most Amazon products are on massive reductions, so profit potential is limited for info products.  

   If you find a highly valuable product in a niche like ‘solar energy kits’ or ‘home stereo equipment’, you might rethink that, because you can make $15+ per sale. Generally speaking though, you should never choose a niche where your minimum commission per sale is less than $15. That should be your magic number.  

   So, with that magic number in mind, we take a stroll over to Clickbank – the number one affiliate network on the Internet, where info products are sold by marketers like you and me for commissions up to 75%. A single $20 book on Clickbank will net you a profit of between $10-$15 – much better for the time you invest into it.

   The higher the number, the better it converts and the more room there is in the market for you to join in. Later, you’ll need to review the competitor sites to be sure you can find a place for you own websites, but for now, just identifying the niche is enough.

   Of course, Clickbank is not the only affiliate marketplace and if you find a product on Amazon that doesn’t show up in Clickbank, you still have other options. Go to Google and search for “NICHE affiliate program”.

The No. 1 reason for home based franchise business failure is not having enough capitalization to launch and manage your operation. By Shelly Sun

If you’re thinking about franchising, it’s important that you have enough capital to launch and enough capital to sustain the operation until recurring royalties can cover your overhead.

Many franchisors wrongly assume that the amount they collect from selling franchises in initial franchise fees will cover overhead. But often the franchise-fee revenue does not fund the necessary infrastructure, leaving the emerging franchisor scrambling. If you’re not sitting on a cash war chest of $500,000, you may run out of cash.

When I was launching my health-care staffing franchise, BrightStar Care, in 2005, we estimated we needed to invest $300,000. I contributed $100,000 of our own money and accessed $200,000 in debt financing. We were about 18 months in when the cash began to get painfully tight.

We had overspent on unnecessary or ill-advised hiring: at least $100,000 on legal and public relations firms not active in the International Franchise Association; $50,000 for salaried employees to do work that contracted consultants could have done, particularly franchise training; and $50,000 to $75,000 for outside help in the first year to handle franchise sales when that role really belonged to my husband, J.D., or me. We actually needed $500,000.

Add up those overages and you see that our initial estimate of $300,000 would have been adequate if we had known then what we know now. While you might avoid similar pitfalls, you should still plan on $200,000 in additional cash reserves–over and above what your financial model shows you need–for unexpected expenses.

Once you’ve figured out a realistic estimate for your opportunity, the next part is pursuing the funds. Here’s a look at the most common sources.

Banks. The capital markets have gotten tighter, but there is still money available. Banks review lots of requests, and they are going to be more inclined to loan to those who make their job easier by anticipating their concerns.

In our first business plan for franchising, we intended to sell 10 franchises in the first year, another 25 in the second year, 40 in the third year, and about 50 each year in the fourth and fifth years. Naturally, the bank questioned how we would sell 10 franchises in a year without any experience. But we had thoroughly researched our competitors and were prepared to convince the bank that we could meet our goal.

These days, you might need to pitch 10 banks before finding a lender. You will need great market research on your industry and your performance compared with peers. You must exert strong confidence in your abilities to achieve your business-plan goals and to repay the loan. And you will need to have skin in the game. Expect to give a personal guaranty for the loan.

So be prepared before you meet with the bank. Make sure your package includes the following: a full business plan; financial statements for the first five years, including a statement of cash flow; and the competitive analysis on your industry to show that your assumptions for unit sales by year, royalty revenue per year and per unit, and earnings as a percentage of revenue are within the ranges of what has occurred historically in the industry.

Government programs. I scoured all the possible government programs, concentrating on ones that were available to women-owned businesses, and sure enough, I found a state program, the Illinois Department of Economic Opportunity Loan Program, that would lend up to $200,000. I had to put in $100,000, which I had planned to do anyway, and I had to create 20 jobs during the five-year loan term ($10,000 per job). You’ll be amazed by the number of resources that may be available within your state, especially if your company-owned units are performing well.

When meeting with bankers who would underwrite the state program’s loan, I prepared binders with tabs for five-year projections of income statements, balance sheets, and, most important, cash flows. I rehearsed the presentation over and over and then, on the big day, went through it from memory. I was nervous, but I got the loan.

Friends and family. Remember how I underestimated the money we needed by $200,000? That was a hard moment. We had to access more capital and really build, or entrench and stall growth. At that point, we had 12 franchisees who had signed up because of their belief in our vision. So we tabled our pride and asked my husband’s parents for a $200,000 loan. I was so ashamed that I requested J.D. to ask his mom and dad without me being by his side for support.

They agreed to help us. We structured the one-year loan with 14% interest (to match their returns in the market, since they had to pull out the money to loan to us). We were able to pay it back in 11 months. We will always be grateful that they stood by us. Receiving financial help from family members is humbling and is something that stays with you, grounds you, and drives you to never have to repeat the experience.

With unemployment rates remaining high, many young professionals are striking out on their own. By Kim Ann Zimmermann

While these youthful entrepreneurs all have their own reasons for starting up a business  — they found no jobs in their field after graduating from college, they found a job but their corporation later downsized, or they simply wanted to set their own work agenda — many have turned to owning a franchise.

Because they don’t have decades of business experience under their belts, they say becoming a franchisee can provide them with the backup they need while they make the most of their energy and enthusiasm.

“You have the brand name behind you, but you bring your own professionalism and commitment to excellence to the business, and by doing the job right you ensure that there is a job waiting for you the next day,” said Mark Jones, 24, who switched career tracks from schoolteacher to franchisee.

Dilley owns a Bricks 4 Kidz franchise in Denver, Colorado. The company specializes in teaching children the principles of engineering and architecture using LEGO® bricks.

“You have the freedom to make your career whatever you want it to be, and there are so many areas where you can pursue your dream,” Dilley said.

A trained educator, Dilley said he saw a lack of passion in the public school system, which led him to switch gears to become a business owner.

His advice is not to stray too far from what you know. “Have a dream and a vision first and don’t just look for any franchise that will take you,” he said. He suggested choosing a franchise that suits your personality and work style.

He said young franchisees should be prepared to address questions about their perceived lack of experience. “Being young is both an advantage and a challenge,” he said. “When you are a younger business owner, you are going to be met with a certain level of scepticism that you lack experience and knowledge to run your own business. Hayden’s company, based in Golden Valley, Minn., offers property-management franchises. “When I got into this business, it was to some degree a good-old-boys club, and there were many people in the business who had been doing it for a long time. I saw the opportunity to integrate new technology into the business of rent collection and coordination of maintenance needs as a way to bring a higher level of service to clients.”

While it is important for young franchisees to have confidence, it has to be tempered with a willingness to learn from their peers.

“You can bring all of the confidence you want to your business, and you should, but you also have to have the skills and knowledge to back it up,” said new Honest-1 Auto Care franchisee Erik Rhyne. The 30-year old entrepreneur plans to open his franchise in Greensboro, N.C., this winter.

The franchise industry has a new “friend” – Facebook. By Dinah Wisenberg Brin

The social-networking giant recently became a member of the International Franchise Association and plans to take part in the big trade group’s annual meeting in February, 2012.

“Joining the IFA is part of Facebook’s continued commitment to helping local entrepreneurs build their businesses, deliver value to their customers and create new jobs in their communities,” Joel Kaplan, Facebook’s vice president of U.S. public policy, said in a statement.

As part of the new alliance, Facebook will join the IFA’s technology committee, according to Matthew Haller, an IFA spokesman. The IFA will dedicate a page on its website to information on Facebook tools and get franchisors to the right team at Facebook if they have questions, he said.

Facebook already provides features to support franchises, including a new “parent-child” tool that helps franchise brands manage their franchisees’ pages on the social-media site. Certain companies have been piloting it, and Facebook wants to “extend the use of that more broadly,” Haller says.

A representative from Facebook is scheduled to speak at the February conference about how franchises can use that tool, according to Haller. Facebook also offers Page, Check-In and ad-targeting tools designed to help businesses attract and engage customers.

A spokeswoman for Facebook wouldn’t say how many franchises currently use its site. But joining the IFA, which has 1,200 franchisor members, “gives Facebook an even greater opportunity to listen to their business needs and provide them with information on the tools they need to connect with franchisees and customers on Facebook,” the spokeswoman said.

The IFA says 90% of the traffic to its own site consists of people interested in franchise opportunities. Facebook hopes the alliance will help franchisors and franchisees learn how to use the site to find potential franchisees and customers, the spokeswoman said.

IFA, which approached Facebook more than a year ago, also is in discussions with Google to join the trade group and set up a similar relationship that may include a protocol for member franchises to submit information for Google maps and other location-related services. Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

I’d make a lousy franchisee–and I have the personality profile to prove it. I’d always been skeptical of personality tests, and so I was delighted when Accord Management Systems of Westlake, Calif., offered to let me and a friend of my choice take one to test it out.

Accord, which works with several large franchise systems, developed a profile of an ideal franchisee. Traits include:

• Higher-than-average dominance
• High energy and drive
• Focused on results
• Logical
• Tough, but fair
• Somewhat sociable
• Risk-taker
• Ambitious
• Assertive
• Collaborative

All the things, apparently, I’m not. Bill Wagner, Accord’s president, tried to be gentle when he told me I’m “extraordinarily sociable,” so gregarious that I’d spend more time talking to customers than closing sales. I “care so much about people,” he said, that I’d be a terrible boss, avoiding confrontations and accepting my employees’ low performance standards. And I’m so optimistic that I’d be dreadful in functions like forecasting future business trends.

I hadn’t told Mr. Wagner anything about the other test-taker, my friend Randal Dupuis, and tried to be pleasant when he said that Mr. Dupuis was my polar opposite. “He’s aggressive, assertive, ambitious and goal-oriented,” Mr. Wagner said. Unlike yours truly, Mr. Wagner said, he has “just enough sociability to mitigate his edge” and is a good boss because he “doesn’t worry much about being liked. Randy is awesome franchisee material.”

I was gleeful. “Randy was a franchisee of ‘Meineke Mufflers’ – and he hated it,” I said.

“Of course he did,” was Mr. Wagner’s unexpected answer. “Look at page D-1 of his report.” Right at the top were the words: “Randy’s profile is typical of people who are naturally suited to new-business development.” His personality would never fit into an established system like Meineke. But he’d thrive, Mr. Wagner said, in a new franchise system, where the rules are not yet set.

If you’re shopping for a franchise, the odds are good that you, too, will be invited to take a personality survey.

Accord uses a behavioral profile which customizes the results into assessment reports for their franchise clients. You can take the test online in less than half an hour by ranking sets of words that best describe you. In one group, for example, you are asked to rank, from one to four, obeying orders, pushing for results, entertaining and enjoying routine.

You can’t flunk a personality survey, but you can send out signals that you might not be the right fit for a franchise system.

Many franchisers ask their present franchisees to take personality surveys, and then try to match new franchisees to the profiles of their top-performing franchisees. Many franchisors have turned down applicants whose profiles showed “they were clearly out of synch. A lot of Franchisors have found that a ‘misfit’ demands a tremendous amount of their time and energy and will never hit the same royalty numbers as someone who’s more naturally suited to their concept.”

Many franchisors’ feel they’re getting better franchisees by profiling applicants. But critics of personality surveys question whether choosing franchisees for certain traits really builds a stronger company. Bob Kreisburg, president of Opus Marketing, a Laguna Hills, Calif., company that administers personality profiles in the information-technology industry, said, “franchise companies that say ‘We have one culture. If you don’t fit, we don’t want you,’ are missing out on the advantages that different people bring to the table.”

Despite their popularity in the business world, personality profiles haven’t won over most scientists and scholars. “I’ve never seen any academic analysis that shows they work,” said Stephen Spinelli, vice provost for entrepreneurship at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., and author of “Franchising: Pathway to Wealth Creation”. “Intuitively,” he said, “I can see how a behavioral survey could tell if you have some of the traits needed to function within a franchise system–like the ability to communicate, a desire to collaborate, etc. But I’m skeptical that any test can tell if you’ll be a good franchisee for a particular franchise.”

Entrepreneur‘s 32nd Annual Franchise 500® is full of shake-ups and surprises. For starters, more than 10 percent of the top 500 franchises are companies that have never ranked before; some are relatively new to the scene, while others have been working their way up for years. Evolving industries led us to make some changes to our categories, such as the addition of “Apparel & Accessories” under Retail and the transformation of previous years’ “Pub-Style Restaurants” category into “Sports Bars.” And then, of course, there’s our new No. 1: Hampton Hotels.

But the overall message of this year’s ranking remains the same: It’s all about the economy.

More important, it’s all about how consumers and entrepreneurs alike perceive the economy. Some experts may insist that the recession ended more than a year ago, but the recession mentality is still holding strong–which means that franchises offering value-priced products or services that people can’t live without continue to be the ones at the head of the pack. Even Hampton owes much of its success to travelers choosing the mid-priced hotel chain over its more expensive competitors.

The good news is, whether you think we’re still deep in the recession or believe the worst is over, franchises could play a key role in finally lifting us out of the quagmire for good. The companies in our Franchise 500® added more than 12,000 franchise units from 2009 to 2010. That translates to a lot of entrepreneurial dreams coming true–and a lot of jobs being created by those entrepreneurs, too. Just take a look at the 2007 Economic Census Franchise Report released this year, the first of its kind. Child Care
More parents are returning to the work force to make ends meet, so child-care franchises continue to thrive, with seven companies in the Franchise 500®. Child-care franchisors are particularly popular for the added value they offer parents by combining child care with educational services.

Fitness
Fitness franchises are still going strong, with 11 companies ranked. And cost is still king: Most of the top fitness franchises like Snap Fitness, can be started for a pretty reasonable investment considering the profit potential. The ongoing trend in fitness shows that consumers (and franchisees) are beginning to crave more variety in their workouts as a means to keep them motivated. 

Senior Services
With seniors as one of the fastest-growing segments of the population, franchises serving them have weathered the recession especially well. Twenty in-home care franchises ranked this year, with five making the top 100. Despite heavy competition, newcomers continue to rise as well, often differentiating themselves with added services such as medical staffing and assisted living placement. Senior-targeted services go beyond personal care, too; other franchises in the ranking offer assistance with retirement planning, estate sales and more.

Resale Stores
Newly thrifty consumers have made resale stores the place to shop. With the addition of 40 franchises this year in the “Apparel & Accessories” category are buyers and sellers of young adult clothing. But don’t think re-sales are for fashion only. Franchises specializing in everything electronic–cell phones, video games, DVDs, computers and more—have performed very well this past year as well.

Health & Wellness
The Franchise 500® offers more evidence of just how relevant healthcare is. Franchises providing chiropractic care and weight-loss services, among others, climbed upward in the rankings, apparently finding no shortage of doctors interested in partnering with franchisees–or even becoming franchisees themselves. Also performing well were franchises offering therapeutic massage and other spa services. Once considered luxuries, such services are now considered by many to be necessities during times of stress. 1. Relying too much on your gut. Yes, you should heed your instincts, but the failure to do a thorough and clear-eyed investigation is the single biggest error in judgment that prospective at home based franchise business owners can make, according to consultant Mark Siebert. Making an emotional decision means you don’t fully understand what you’re getting into. “You’d be amazed,” he says, “at the number of people who don’t even read the disclosure document.”

2. Failing to make the necessary calls. Franchisors must provide you with a list of prospective franchisees. Siebert says it’s critical to call at least two dozen of them, especially those in the area you intend to open your top home based business. Franchisees are remarkably open, he says, and you will learn a great deal about the true experience of owning the work from home franchise company and its potential rewards and pitfalls.

3. Being unclear about the added responsibilities you will have. You won’t just be running your own home based small business. You also will be reporting to a corporate franchisor. And this may often involve filing reports, participating in conference calls, attending training sessions and engaging in a lot of other franchisor-required activities. So be aware of all corporate obligations.

4. Underestimating the amount of time and money required. Franchise consultant John Macaluso always cautions his clients that it can take at least six months to a year to get a franchise off the ground to consistently make money from home – sometimes longer. “Many home based franchisees,” he says, “assume that the franchisor has done the work and all he or she has to do go in every morning, count the money and make the deposits – and then blithely say to themselves, ‘I’ll go play golf now.’ Wrong!”

5. Ignoring franchisor support. In many cases, franchisors have developed tools and support systems to make their franchisees’ top home business lives easier and to better ensure the chances of success. Some may offer marketing and administrative assistance or access to a coordinated network of franchisees. Be sure to look carefully at the resources your franchisor provides and take advantage of those that can help your business. There’s no sense in needlessly reinventing the wheel, says Macaluso.
