I am really excited to be writing this post! My new Fitbit Ultra just arrived via FedEx this afternoon.

I immediately dropped everything and ran out to grab it because I literally could not contain myself.

Want to know what the Fitbit is? Haha, fitbit is a funny name. See this thing has me super silly right now.

Fitbit Overview

I am not going to go too in depth into the nitty gritty of the Fitbit just yet as I plan to write a very thorough Fitbit review within a few days of playing with my new gadget.

But I do want to point out some of its highlights.

The Fitbit Ultra is a wireless activity and sleep tracker designed to keep you motivated and addicted to being active.

As you probably already know, being sedentary and sitting are killing you. One of my goals as your fitness coach is to try to provide you with the knowledge and motivation to keep you moving. Because it’s crazy how much your life expectancy drops if you sit at a desk for 8 hours a day. (Make sure to check out that post for more stats like that).

The Fitbit measures the following:

Steps

Distance

Sleep patters (cool!)

Calories burned

Floor climbed (stairs)

There is also a clock on it, a stopwatch, and a cool little personal greeting which you can help customize. I swear this thing has motivated me and I have barely gotten it out of the box!

The absolute best part is though, that it will automatically load all the data it collects into your profile on your computer whenever you come within 15 feet of your computer (or when you plug it in via USB to charge).

It took me about 5 minutes to download the software for my iMac, set up an account at FitBit.com, and go through their training on how to use it.

As you can see in the picture above, it looks sort of like a money clip, so you can really clip it anywhere on your person all day long and it can be discrete.

When you want to know how you are progressing, simply press the button on the Fitbit and you will see all your accomplishments so far for the day.

My Plan For the Fitbit

My plan for the next few days is to use the Fitbit Ultra non stop to give it a good test run.

I can’t wait to see how active I am. I know I drive and sit and the computer a lot, so that isn’t good, but this will give me a baseline activity level from which to use as a springboard to increase my activity.

I will take good notes and report back to you in a detailed Fitbit review soon.

I’m off to use my Fitbit!

New Powder Greens product, Prograde Genesis, to be Released This Week

I just received word that Prograde Nutrition will be releasing a new powder greens product this week called, Prograde Genesis.

Update: It’s now available!

Click here to read my Prograde Genesis Powder Greens Review now.

Or you can check it out on Prograde’s website by clicking here —> Prograde Genesis.

I was surprised and super excited when I heard Prograde’s announcement that the powder greens Prograde Genesis product was hitting the streets so I thought I would write a quick post about what a powder greens product is and and why I have been waiting for something like this from prograde for a long time.

What are Powder Greens?

A greens powder is a pulverized mixture of some of the best and most powerful living, green sources of nutrients on earth.

Some of the ingredients that are often included in powder greens include:

spirulina

chlorella

kelp

kale

sprouts

wheat grass

barley grass

oat grass

alfalfa grass

parsley

spinach

collard greens

herbs

roots

flowers

berries

and more….

*note: I will update this list of ingredients to be what is actually in the new Prograde Genesis powder greens product when it is released this week.

Now we all know we should be eating our greens, but how many of us actually do that on a daily basis?

And how many days during the winter do you really feel like eating a giant salad?

And based on the ingredient list above, how many of us actually get the amount of greens in our days that comes in a powder greens product like this Prograde Genesis product?

The answer to all of these questions is probably very close to ZERO!

Why Use Greens Powder?

Most people know that we need to eat our greens but few actually know why it is so important.

Briefly, scientists have now found that chronic inflammation in our bodies is a common precursor to obesity and disease.

The scary thing is that we all have some level of inflammation in our body at all times and we don’t even know it.

That’s why inflammation has now been named the “silent killer”. It’s leading up to cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions that are killing us.

Essentially, inflammation is caused by free radicals floating around of bodies doing damage to other healthy cells as they move around.

Free radicals occur in the first place as a result of toxins in our bodies, mostly from the food we eat (most of us are NOT eating enough veggies and fruits) and by the air we breathe.

Scientists hypothesize that if we can control the free radical and inflammation levels with antioxidants then we will decrease our chances of diseases, obesity, and premature aging.

All good things, if you ask me!

Why Prograde Genesis?

A powder greens Prograde Genesis type product is one of the few supplements I will ever suggest anyone take.

But I do think it is THE most important one we take, even more important than a multi-vitamin.

Prograde Genesis contains:

Fruit Blend

Vegetable Blend

Glycemic Optimizer Blend (including antioxidant superstar, Pterostilbene)

Mushroom Blend

Fiber Blend

Probiotic Blend

Here is a list of all the ingredients:

The bottom line is that the level of antioxidants, electrons (energy), and nutrients we will get from a powder greens product such as Prograde Genesis is unparalleled.

And all you need to do to consume it is mix it with some liquid (probably water or milk) and stir it up into a smoothie type drink. Couldn’t be easier.

I’ve tried enough green drink over the last few years to know that they really don’t taste all that great. In fact, it tastes bad enough to make a lot of people not use it.

So, I am thrilled to see that Prograde uses Stevia, a natural alternative to sugar as well as a lemon-lime flavor to help make the drink taste great so we have no excuses not to drink our greens!

Prograde Genesis can help with:

weight loss

anti-aging

tissue repair

reversal of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease

prevention of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease

increase energy levels

balance insulin levels

improve digestive health

squash free radical activity

support your immune system

What more would you want for yourself in a powder greens product?

I know that I have been using various powder greens products over the years because I know I should be using them.

But also, I feel really good when I do drink my greens.

Think about it: you could get all the greens and then some that you should be consuming each day (but aren’t) and get them down in one drink in just a few minutes.

Isn’t that a great way to start your day?

Prograde Genesis Powder Greens Summary

A powder greens product is the best supplement you can take and the best thing you can do for your body to increase energy, reverse disease and aging, and help prevent future disease.

Prograde Genesis is now available and I have posted a full review of the product. You can read that by clicking here —-> Prograde Genesis Review.

How to Make Kale Chips

A few months back I saw a facebook post about buying kale chips from a company I follow.

Kale chips? WTH? And gross.

Besides, I’m really not much of a snacker…..

But then I shared the post on my facebook page and one of my friends and I got into a really cool conversation about them. My friend, Bittu, and I went to grad school together a million years ago. She has gone on to become a Ph.D. because she is super smart. But she is also a vegetarian and always looking for new and exciting ways to prepare foods.

Bittu told me that she had just made a batch of kale chips a few days earlier and said that, and I quote, “they were amazing”.

Amazing? Kale chips?

I’ve never described my experiences with green leafy vegetables before as amazing, but I was listening because I know she is a smarty. I would absolutely need to learn how to make kale chips!

She gave me a few pointers, and I decided to give it a shot. I’ve sitting here eating kale chips right now and getting it all over my key board. I felt like I had to get this in a post quickly before I lost my will to convince you to give it a shot.

As I picked up my first kale chip and ate it, I realized exactly why they were called “chips”. Light, airy, crispy, and salty. I love me some salt!

They don’t really taste like kale anymore, but I can’t really describe the taste exactly. But I will tell you that you won’t be able to eat just one.

And I hope I don’t need to deliberate on the benefits of kale. It’s a green leafy vegetable, packed with vitamins and minerals your body needs and its also a veggie you can eat and eat and eat all day and it will never raise your insulin levels very much. So, it’s awesome if you follow a plant based diet, a primal diet or a paleo diet.

OK, smarty, go get some kale and follow my lead here:

Roasted Kale Chips:

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

2. Wash kale and cut into chip smaller pieces.

3. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet and toss with olive oil.

4. Season to taste. Salt, pepper, etc.

5. Bake for about 30 minutes.

6. Be amazed. Or confused. Whichever.

I may actually try them with coconut oil sometime.

Please Leave a Comment:

Have you ever made kale chips?

Are you going to give them a try? Why or why not?

If you have or will be, let us know if you come up with any cool spices combos for them!

So bad, in fact, that it is literally killing you. Check out the infographic below for the truth about sitting down.

We are now averaging 9.3 hours sitting down per day.

Sitting increases our risk of death up to 40%.

Sitting makes us fat.

Obese people sit for 2.5 more hours per day than thin people.

People with sitting jobs have twice the rate of cardiovascular disease as people with standing jobs.

Those who sit 3+ hours per day on the couch watching TV are 64% more likely to die from heart disease.

The recommended 30 minutes per day of physical activity is not enough to counteract 8 hours of sitting each day at our jobs. You must interrupt sitting.

Interrupt sitting with walking, stretching, and stair climbing.

Cardio at Home Workouts For Faster Fat Loss

You are about to get some of the most effective cardio at home workouts that are going to blow torch fat off your body in minimum time. In addition to losing fat at a record pace, these cardio at home workouts will allow you to spend less time exercising while getting better results than traditional cardio workouts that take at least twice as long to complete.

And one more thing: you don’t need a single piece of equipment. You will be using nothing but the best tool you already have – your bodyweight.

Before we get into the sample cardio at home workouts, we must first go over a few important principles so you understand exactly why these workouts are designed the way they are.

First off all, for the cardio workouts you will be performing bodyweight circuits. All this means is that you will be performing bodyweight exercises back to back with little to no rest between them. It has been proven by both research and real world examples that bodyweight circuits are more effective for burning fat than tradtional cardio methods. This means you will get more results in less time.

In addition to taking less time, the bodyweight circuits will not only cause you to burn off fat, but you will build lean muscle as well. That is something traditional cardio just can’t do. Building lean muscle will elevate your metabolism and also allow you to develop a lean, athletic looking physique.

Second, you will be using compound exercises. These exercises will require you to use a lot of muscle mass at one time to perform a repetition. This, once again, will cause you to burn more calories during the workout itself, but you will keep burning calories for up to 36 hours after the workout is completed.

Okay, now that you have the necessary information about the cardio home workouts, it’s time to get right into them.

Home Cardio Workout #1

Advanced Burpees x 10 – 15

Inverted Rows with Palms up Grip x 10 – 15

One Leg Romanian Deadlift x 10 – 15 each leg

Close Grip Push ups x 10 – 15

Plank x 30 seconds

Jumping Jacks x 50 – 70

Go through that circuit performing each exercise right after the other. Your level of advancement will determine how many reps you perform for each exercise. The more advanced you are, the more reps you will perform for each exercise.

Instead of completing a specified number of circuits, you will complete as many circuits as possible in a set period of time. Example: 15-25 minutes. That may not seem like a long time, but I promise you that after 5 minutes into that workout, you will be a believer in the effectiveness of bodyweight circuits.

Home Cardio Workout #2

Squat Thrusts x 20 – 30

Door Pull ups x as many as possible (use a chair for assistance if you can’t perform these on your own)

Handstand Push ups x 10 – 15 (put your feet on a chair to make this easier)

Bulgarian Split Squat x 10 -15 each leg

Reverse Crunches x 15 – 20

Squat Jumps x 10 – 15

Once again, perform the exercises one right after the other, and complete as many circuits as possible in 15-25 minutes.

Home Cardio Workout #3

Advanced Burpees

Yes, this workout requires only a single exercise, but it is a lot tougher than it looks. You can go about this workout one of two ways. First, complete as many advanced burpees as possible in a set period of time (i.e. 15 minutes), or complete a specified number of advanced burpees as fast as possible (i.e. 50 advanced burpees).

Those three cardio at home workouts are a guaranteed way to take your fat loss and body transformation goals to an entirely different level. You can perform three workouts per week on non-consecutive days alternating between the three.

To make sure you keep getting great results, make sure you improve your performance every workout. That means you should either complete more circuits in the same period of time, increase the number of reps performed for each exercise, or increase the duration of the circuits. This is imperative if you want to continue getting great results.

The “Godfather of Fitness” passed away on January 23rd at the age of 96 due to respiratory failure resulting from pneumonia.

Jack’s mission in life was to help people to help themselves feel better, look better, and live longer. Jack has motivated millions throughout his 70-year career to improve their lives by improving their health.

He is best known for his home workouts and nutrition show, “The Jack LaLanne Show”, which aired in the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s, and most recently for the Jack LaLanne juicer.

Jack was a long time raw foods enthusiast and vegetarian, later in life only eating fish as his main source of protein. He believed that what you put in your mouth directly affected how your body looked and functioned. Even back then he knew that eating poorly could directly lead to diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Amazingly, Jack was credited for being the first to get women to workout with weights as well as convincing seniors that they need to exercise. Not small feats at all!

Here are a few quotes that Jack was best known for:

“Anything in life is possible if you make it happen.”

“Anything in life is possible and you can make it happen.”

“Your waistline is your lifeline.”

“Exercise is King, nutrition is Queen, put them together and you’ve got a kingdom.”

“Don’t exceed the feed limit.”

“The food you eat today is walking and talking tomorrow.”

“Ten seconds on the lips and a lifetime on the hips.”

“Better to wear out than rust out”

“Do – don’t stew.”

“People don’t die of old age, they die of inactivity.”

“First we inspire them, then we perspire them.”

“You eat everyday, you sleep everyday, and your body was made to exercise everyday.”

“Work at living and you don’t have to die tomorrow.”

“I can’t die, it would ruin my image.”

“If man makes it, don’t eat it.”

“If it tastes good, spit it out.”

“What’s it doing for me?”

“Your health account is like your bank account: The more you put in, the more you can take out.”

“If one apple is good, you wouldn’t eat 100.”

“It’s not what you do some of the time that counts, it’s what you do all of the time that counts.”

“Make haste slowly.”

“Eat right and you can’t go wrong.”

“My top priority in life is my workout each day.” (My personal favorite)

His goal for “The Jack LaLanne Show” was to get housewives to exercise. When I went through some of the old videos of the show I thought they were so funny. More a sign of the times. He wore a (seemingly) one piece body suit with ballet slippers and used only a chair and his “Glamor Stretcher”, a stretchy tube of rubber similar to what we call resistance bands today, to exercise.

Take a look at this clip from an episode of “The Jack LaLanne Show”:

I also stumbled upon this gem of an interview with Jack from 5 years ago posted over at Share Guide.

Here is an exert from the interview where Jack discusses the benefits of exercise, it’s role in controlling aging, and how often and how intense you should be exercising.

Share Guide: You can’t leave your body behind at home.

Jack LaLanne: That’s what I am saying. You have to take care of your 640 muscles, and the number one thing is exercise. You can eat perfectly but if you don’t exercise, you cannot get by. There are so many health food nuts out there that eat nothing but natural foods but they don’t exercise and they look terrible. Then there are other people who exercise like a son-of-a-gun but eat a lot of junk. They look pretty good because the exercise is king. Nutrition is queen. Put them together and you’ve got a kingdom!

Share Guide: So according to you, exercise is most important?

Jack LaLanne: Exercise IS number one! Think about it: the human body, how do you hurt it?

Share Guide: By not using it.

Jack LaLanne: Right! So many older people, they just sit around all day long and they don’t get any exercise. Their muscles atrophy, and they lose their strength, their energy and vitality by inactivity.

Share Guide: You are right. I have done a survey of Share Guide readers, and many more of them buy natural foods than exercise.

Jack LaLanne: That’s what I am saying. They think they are going to get it out of a bottle or a pill or food.

Share Guide: So people need to learn to make the time to exercise.

Jack LaLanne: Yes, exercise is the catalyst. That’s what makes everything happen: your digestion, your elimination, your sex life, your skin, hair, everything about you depends on circulation. And how do you increase circulation? By exercise. I’ll tell you one thing, you don’t always have to be on the go. I sit around a lot, I read a lot, and I do watch television. But I also work out for two hours every day of my life, even when I’m on the road.

Share Guide: In your most recent book, Revitalize Your Life, you talk about reversing the aging process.

Jack LaLanne: Absolutely. For example, take a guy that’s 60 years old and hasn’t exercised. Say you exercise him for 6 to 8 weeks–you can double his strength and double his endurance. Test after test has been done all over the world to prove this. They have even taken people in their 90′s and put them on a weight training program and doubled their strength and endurance. Just think what the younger people at 50, 60, 70 and 80 can do if they can do that with 90 year olds.

Share Guide: So you’re saying that even though we all are aging every day, exercise can counteract that?

Jack LaLanne: Absolutely. You can ward it off; you can prolong your life. I’ve outlived the age of maturity. I have showed my system works.

Share Guide: Many people who go to the gym only go three days a week rather than six or seven. What do you think about this?

Jack LaLanne: Three days is enough if it’s vigorous.

Share Guide: I go to the gym in the morning before work, around 7 am.

Jack LaLanne: Do you work with the weights?

Share Guide: Sometimes. I start with 30 minutes on the treadmill or stairmaster.

Jack LaLanne: Twelve to seventeen minutes is plenty on the treadmill–if it’s done fast. That’s all you need for cardiovascular benefit. You don’t need to spend that extra time unless you are over weight and you need to burn off extra calories.

Share Guide: How fast do I need to go on the treadmill?

Jack LaLanne: Do it vigorously, like somebody is chasing you. You’ve got to do it hard. Otherwise, if you just take it easy and do it longer, you are spending all that time when you don’t need it. Use that extra time with your weights instead. Focus on your problem zones, your strength, your energy, your flexibility and all the rest. Maybe your chest is flabby or your hips or waist need toning. Also, you should change your program every thirty days. That’s the key.

Share Guide: How important do you think it is to have a personal trainer?

Jack LaLanne: If it’s for the average person that doesn’t have any willpower, it’s important. For the person that is really progressing and they read up a lot and they have a lot of energy and discipline, they don’t need a trainer. It depends on the individual. I don’t need a trainer–I am my own trainer.

Share Guide: But someone that is just starting to go to the gym, they might want to get some training.

Jack LaLanne: Yes, just starting up it would be good to get a trainer for a couple of months. But not everyone can afford it. I know a lot of older people can’t manage that.

Share Guide: So you think that working out three times a week is enough if you are vigorous about it?

Jack LaLanne: If you are ambitious and you want to do more, then I would do 4 days. Exercise vigorously one day and rest the next.

Share Guide: On the alternate days when I am not at the gym, I do yoga or tai chi. Those are not as vigorous.

Jack LaLanne: No, but they help with coordination and increase the circulation.

Share Guide: Right, they make the energy flow, kind of like a meditation in motion.

Jack LaLanne: I say if you enjoy it, do it. Let me ask this: when you are at the gym, how long do you rest before you do the next exercise?

Share Guide: Generally I do two sets of 10-12 reps with a minute in between.

Jack LaLanne: That’s too long. I rest ten seconds between sets.

Share Guide: Two sets per exercise?

Jack LaLanne: That is the very minimum. I do 20 sets for deltoids, 20 sets for pecs, and 20 sets for lats. It’s important to change things around. Maybe for 30 days I might do ten reps with high weight, but the tenth rep should be to failure.

Share Guide: Meaning you can’t quite do it?

Jack LaLanne: That’s it. Then you build muscle and you build strength. Then for say 30 days I’ll cut the weight down a bit and do fifteen reps. Then maybe for 30 days I’ll add weight and do only 5 or 6 reps, then for another 30 days I’ll do everything really slow. Try that sometimes. Like you are doing a prayer. Eight counts to bring it up and eight counts to let it down. That is very hard, I’ll tell you! Then I’d do everything for a while real fast. You aren’t used to any of this so the body responds. Pretty soon the hips and knees start to go, doing the same thing day after day. I am also very high on pool exercises. I started doing exercises when I was 15 or 16 years old called Jack LaLanne Hydronastics. I worked every muscle of the body in the pool. It’s very effective.

Share Guide: I remember reading that you feel swimming is a very comprehensive exercise.

Jack LaLanne: Yes. You should do it against the clock. Say you are going to do 30 laps in 15 minutes. Then you try to do it each day a little faster. That is putting demands on the body, and that is how you build up. You keep up your energy instead of going downhill.

Jack LaLanne was an amazing man, who without his influence and teachings, fitness may not have been what it is today. The Godfather of Fitness and original Home Workouts Expert will be missed.

Eating A Plant-Based Diet

For those of you who have been following me for awhile you know that I believe very strongly in eating a plant based diet.

Plant based diets provide the following health benefits:

decrease risk of heart disease

decrease risk of diabetes

lower cholesterol levels

lower blood pressure levels

lower risk of certain cancers

help to decrease weight or maintain a healthy weight

All good things, but I bet you really didn’t get too excited about any of those did you? You probably thought, “Yeah, Susan, I’ve heard it all a million times before. I know I need to eat more vegetables.”

I know, because that’s exactly how I feel when I read about plant based diets.

But I do have something you haven’t heard before, something that was recently reported in The Huffington Post (link to article).

A Plant Based Diet is an actual CURE FOR CANCER

And I know that will blow your mind because I know you have known someone, or know someone now, who has cancer.

I have a 7 year old friend, Hannah, who is battling leukemia right now. And in the past few weeks of her journey, I have heard dozens and dozens of other stories from people about who else has also battled this disease.

Everyone seems to know someone.

And to be honest, I know cancer is an issue out there, growing each day. But it has only been the last few years that I have been paying attention on how to prevent cancer.

You see, my mom battled lung cancer 5 years ago. So, naturally, I started being concerned for my own health and looking for ways to keep myself cancer free. But it wasn’t until Hannah got leukemia that I started looking for a cure for cancer.

What I am finding is amazing. We can control so much of our health through the nutrition choices we make.

Check out this interview that was included in the referenced article above between T. Colin Campbell, Author of The China Study and Professor at Cornell University, and Kathy Freston, the Author of this amazing article.

KF: What happens in the body when cancer develops? What is the actual process?

TCC: Cancer generally develops over a long period of time, divided into 3 stages, initiation, promotion and progression.

Initiation occurs when chemicals or other agents attack the genes of normal cells to produce genetically modified cells capable of eventually causing cancer. The body generally repairs most such damage but if the cell reproduces itself before it is repaired, its new (daughter) cell retains this genetic damage. This process may occur within minutes and, to some extent, is thought to be occurring most of the time in most of our tissues.

Promotion occurs when the initiated cells continue to replicate themselves and grow into cell masses that eventually will be diagnosed. This is a long growth phase occurring over months or years and is known to be reversible.

Progression occurs when the growing cancer masses invade neighboring tissues and/or break away from the tissue of origin (metastasis) and travel to distant tissues when they are capable of growing independently at which point they are considered to be malignant.

KF: Why do some people get cancer, and others don’t? What percentage is genetic, and what percentage has to do with diet?

TCC: Although the initiated cells are not considered to be reversible, the cells growing through the promotion stage are usually considered to be reversible, a very exciting concept. This is the stage that especially responds to nutritional factors. For example, the nutrients from animal based foods, especially the protein, promote the development of the cancer whereas the nutrients from plant-based foods, especially the antioxidants, reverse the promotion stage. This is a very promising observation because cancer proceeds forward or backward as a function of the balance of promoting and anti-promoting factors found in the diet, thus consuming anti-promoting plant-based foods tend to keep the cancer from going forward, perhaps even reversing the promotion. The difference between individuals is almost entirely related to their diet and lifestyle practices.

Although all cancer and other diseases begin with genes, this is not the reason whether or not the disease actually appears. If people do the right thing during the promotion stage, perhaps even during the progression stage, cancer will not appear and if it does, might even be resolved. Most estimates suggest that not more than 2-3 percent of cancers are due entirely to genes; almost all the rest is due to diet and lifestyle factors. Consuming plant based foods offers the best hope of avoiding cancer, perhaps even reversing cancer once it is diagnosed. Believing that cancer is attributed to genes is a fatalistic idea but believing that cancer can be controlled by nutrition is a far more hopeful idea.

KF: You said that initially something attacks the genes, chemicals or other agents; like what?

TCC: Cancer, like every other biological event–good or bad–begins with genes. In the case of cancer, gene(s) that give rise to cancer either may be present when we are born or, during our lifetimes, normal genes may be converted into cancer genes by certain highly reactive chemicals (i.e., carcinogens).

Consider ‘cancer genes’ as seeds that grow into tumor masses only if they are ‘fed’. The ‘feeding’ comes from wrongful nutrition. It’s like growing a lawn. We plant seeds but they don’t grow into grass (or weeds) unless they are provided water, sunlight and nutrients. So it is with cancer. In reality, we are planting seeds all of our lifetime although some may be present at birth, not only for cancer but also for other events as well. But this mostly does not matter unless we ‘nourish’ their growth.

The chemicals that create these cancer genes are called ‘carcinogens’. Most carcinogens of years past have been those that attack normal genes to give cancer genes. These are initiating carcinogens, or initiators. But more recently, carcinogens also may be those that promote cancer growth. They are promoting carcinogens, or promoters.

Our work showed that casein is the most relevant cancer promoter ever discovered.

Aside from chemicals initiating or promoting cancer, other agents such as cosmic rays (energetic particles) from the sun or from the outer reaches of space may impact our genes to cause them to change (i.e., mutate) so that they could give rise to cancer ‘seeds’. The most important point to consider is that we cannot do much about preventing initiation but we can do a lot about preventing promotion. The initiating idea is fatalistic and outside of our control but the promotion idea is hopeful because we can change our exposure to promoting agents and reverse the cancer process, thus is within our control.

KF: What exactly is so bad about animal protein?

TCC: I don’t choose the word “exactly” because it suggests something very specific. Rather, casein causes a broad spectrum of adverse effects.

Among other fundamental effects, it makes the body more acidic, alters the mix of hormones and modifies important enzyme activities, each of which can cause a broad array of more specific effects. One of these effects is its ability to promote cancer growth (by operating on key enzyme systems, by increasing hormone growth factors and by modifying the tissue acidity). Another is its ability to increase blood cholesterol (by modifying enzyme activities) and to enhance atherogenesis, which is the early stage of cardiovascular disease.

And finally, although these are casein-specific effects, it should be noted that other animal-based proteins are likely to have the same effect as casein.

KF: Ok, so I am clear that it’s wise to avoid casein, which is intrinsic in dairy (milk and cheese), but how is other animal protein, such as chicken, steak, or pork, implicated in the cause and growth of cancer?

TCC: I would first say that casein is not just “intrinsic” but IS THE MAIN PROTEIN OF COW MILK, REPRESENTING ABOUT 87% OF THE MILK PROTEIN.

The biochemical systems which underlie the adverse effects of casein are also common to other animal-based proteins. Also, the amino acid composition of casein, which is the characteristic primarily responsible for its property, is similar to most other animal-based proteins. They all have what we call high ‘biological value’, in comparison, for example, with plant-based proteins, which is why animal protein promotes cancer growth and plant protein doesn’t.

KF: Isn’t anything in moderation ok, as long as we don’t overdo it?

TCC: I rather like the expression told by my friend, Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD, the Cleveland Clinic surgeon who reversed heart disease and who says, “Moderation kills!” I prefer to go the whole way, not because we have fool-proof evidence showing that 100% is better than, say, 95% for every single person for every single condition but that it is easier to avoid straying off on an excursion that too often becomes a slippery slope back to our old ways. Moreover, going the whole way allows us to adapt to new unrealized tastes and to rid ourselves of some old addictions. And finally, moderation often means very different things for different people.

KF: Are you saying that if one changes their diet from animal based protein to plant-based protein that the disease process of cancer can be halted and reversed?

TCC: Yes, this is what our experimental research shows. I also have become aware of many anecdotal claims by people who have said that their switch to a plant-based diet stopped even reversed (cured?) their disease. One study on melanoma has been published in the peer-reviewed literature that shows convincing evidence that cancer progression is substantially halted with this diet.

KF: How long does it take to see changes?

TCC: It is not clear because carefully designed research in humans has not been done. However, we demonstrated and published findings showing that experimental progression of disease is at least suspended, even reversed, when tumors are clearly present.

KF: Consider a person who has been eating poorly his whole life; is there still hope that a dietary change can make a big difference? Or is everything already in motion?

TCC: Yes, a variety of evidence shows that cancers and non-cancers alike can be stopped even after consuming a poor diet earlier in life. This effect is equivalent to treatment, a very exciting concept.

KF: This is sounding like it’s a cure for cancer; is that the case?

TCC: Yes. The problem in this area of medicine is that traditional doctors are so focused on the use of targeted therapies (chemo, surgery, radiation) that they refuse to even acknowledge the use of therapies like nutrition and are loathe to even want to do proper research in this area. So, in spite of the considerable evidence–theoretical and practical–to support a beneficial nutritional effect, every effort will be made to discredit it. It’s a self-serving motive.

KF: What else do you recommend one does to avoid, stop, or reverse cancer?

TCC: A good diet, when coupled with other health promoting activities like exercise, adequate fresh air and sunlight, good water and sleep, will be more beneficial. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

**end interview.

I thought this was an amazing interview. I hope you have learned all about how cancer actually originates and how a plant based diet can actually be a cure for cancer.

Will Doctors Ever Prescribe A Plant Based Diet As a Cancer Treatment?

No.

Not as a first or only course of treatment.

Depending on the cancer, the medical community actually has a treatment blueprint mapped out. Hannah gets her treatments according to the number of days since she was diagnosed. They know exactly what treatments she will receive and when weeks in advance.

I really want diet and nutrition to become a much bigger part of treatment for these diseases, but I think we will have a hard time finding the doctor who goes against the treatment blueprint and prescribes a plant based diet.

Perhaps if medical schools started including nutrition as a course that med students have to take that would be a good start.

Questions for YOU!

Do you know anyone now or have you known anyone with cancer?

What was their course of treatment?

What do you think of the info given in the interview?

Do you think it is enough to switch you over to a more plant based diet?

Would you ever recommend a plant based diet as a treatment for cancer vs the drugs doctors prescribe?
