These are images of my good friend and incredible yogi, John Salisbury. He practices at At One Yoga. If you're ever interested in checking out one of the best yoga instructors in town, sign up for one of his classes or workshops.

The vision behind these images stems from the idea that yoga should be practiced everywhere and not just on the mat in the studio. The essential lesson of yoga is the challenge of bringing what you've learned in class and meditation into the real world. With this project, I wanted to find locations in the city that would compliment that philosophy by juxtaposing the beauty of the practice with harsh lighting and "found" locations that were not typical of a yoga portrait. With that in mind, I was careful not to over produce and over light the subject. The majority of the images are straight out of camera and all have minimal lighting applied.

At One Yoga recently acquired these images to use as part of their clothing line, spiritual gangster. Keep an eye out for them in their ads and products. :-))

Anna and Wes Scottsdale Wedding

This was one of my favorite weddings, photographed on Halloween.
And yes, I realize it was ages ago, but I'm a bit behind on my blog postings.
Anna and Wes were such an amazing couple to work with. They are both professional musicians, artists, and completely gorgeous.

This first image was shot on a golf course just outside the resort. Neither Anna nor Wes are into golf, so my goal was to make the area look more like open space rather than a golf course. In this image, I added some texture and post production to bring out a surreal feeling to the moment.

Justin, rocking it on the longboard!

This is one of my favorite first moments, where Renee's mom sees her dressed up for the first time. The mom has such an endearing look on her face that shows how proud and excited she is for her daughter. I made sure I had a portion of my frame filled with the brides veil to help tell more of the story of that moment. The shot would not have been the same without it.

How gorgeous is Renee! I can't stress how important it is, as a photographer, to always spend a few minutes during the day to make a beautiful portrait of the bride. As much as I believe in photojournalist and candid capture of the day, these types of portraits are so important given the time and effort all brides put into their hair and make-up.

This set of images was taken by my husband, Eric. I love his selective focus in these images and of course, the eyes of the bride who is about to see her groom for the first time. You can feel the excitement.

What an awesome way to personalize your day. This couple, as formal as they look, are completely down to earth. For them the day was about being comfortable and having fun.

I love how Renee is holding the tree and the lovely effect that our infrared camera creates with the tree.

How I love sunflare!!!

I wanted to include this image in my blog post since I tend to post the more portrait-oriented shots and not so much of the action shots. Plus it was taken by my husband, Eric, who feels like he's not well represented on this blog, sorry darlin'. I thought this shot was well composed and I love the slow shutter he used to emphasize the action. Nice work E!

These last two images were a couple of my favorites during the day. For the photo-philes, I shot wide open f1.8 with a video light. I opted no to use flash, since it tends to flatten the image and in this case I wanted the shot to look more romantic.

American Dali

American Dali is a local band in Phoenix lead by (singer) Kathryn and (guitarist) Ryan. I wanted to give them a more hard-core look using lighting and location while also maintaining classic clean lines and stylistic lighting to make the images pop. I'm a big fan of using leading lines in my images to direct the viewers eye to the subject and to add to a more interesting composition.

For the tech-heads: I shot this session at night in a number of location and parking garages in Phoenix. I used only a single soft box and my 580ex flash units along with my Canon 5D.

Tarin and John

My source of inspiration for this shot was the painted image on the wall behind the bride. It shows three women seemingly dressing and interacting in a way that juxtaposes nicely with the bride getting ready.

Tarin is a strong and confident bride which I wanted this image to invoke. Low angle images empower the subject and also serve to create a blank canvas as a background.

I love the framing elements of this image and how the curve of the fountain brings your eye to the subject of the image.

This is one of my favorite wedding images. I love the sweet expression on both of their faces surrounded by the soft pastels of the grasses. The shading and color of the grass sets a soft tone for the image.

As you may see from this image and many others, I'm a big fan of light flares. So often this effect can create a visual explosion that makes the image come alive with more passion and love.

I love this image of John's dad giving the blessing. I purposefully positioned the light so that it would give him a strong silhouette and bring more emotion to the scene.

This image is pure fun. Compositionally, I tried to pull together both the action in the foreground and background telling the whole story. I don't think this shot would have had the same effect if it showcased just the bride or only her single girls. I set up lighting in the room so that both the bride and her friends would be equally exposed.

Private Workshop for Mom's

Last weekend I hosted a workshop for a local moms' group at my studio. They surprised their friend for her birthday with a full day of fun. One of their stops for the day was at my studio for a 2 hour short and sweet tutorial on how to make better photographs of your kids.

Yoga with Harmony

Harmony and I have been working since this Summer to get images of her in a non-traditional yoga environment. There are quite a few locations where we shot, but these were some of my faves. I love the simple background that the sky and brick create, along with the illusions of the line, and the grungy feel of the ground.
Harmony is an incredible teacher(!) for those who may be searching and I'm honored to have had the opportunity to work with her. Drop me a line if you want info on where to check out one of her classes.

Lauren and Merrill

For a little bit of background on this session, here is the story about how they first met:

"Merrill and I met at a 3 day Phish festival up in Maine called "IT", there were over 80,000 people there! I was living in AZ at the time and Merrill lived in Dana Point California. On the 3rd day of the festival (I had lost all my friends that I came with at this point) I was walking around by myself. Merrill had a water bottle that had lemons wedges stuck in it, so he randomly came up to me and asked me if i could get them out for him, and I did. So we started to talk for a while and we discovered that he lived a couple blocks from my mom's summer house in Dana Point. I spent all my summers at this house since I was in High School so we thought "what a small world!". We ended up keeping in touch over the phone when we got back home. Then we visited each other a couple times and started realizing that this could be more than a fling, so he decided to move out to Arizona so we could give it a try and see what happens. Five years later here we are!!! I always said I needed to marry a guy who loved music just as much as I do, so it couldn't have worked out better to meet him at a Phish concert!! We have had so many great adventures together, we really are best friends!!!"

Lauren and Merrill are a super-vibrant, fun-loving couple. So for this session, I scouted out some cool colorful urbanscapes. L&M also have an intense love and respect for nature so we wrapped the session up near Papago Park at sunset. They spent a Summer traveling in the van featured in a few of the images, so you can imagine there's a lot of love for that car.

Thanks for your great energy and fun-loving spirit!! (oh, and for that Tequila shot at Coach House ;-)

And what engagement session wouldn't be complete without a tequila shot at the Coach House?!
