Bruce Lee is Back in Afghanistan

A 20-year-old man in Afghanistan nicknamed “Bruce Hazara” has become somewhat of an internet sensation because he looks a lot like martial artist/actor Bruce Lee.

He has posted a bunch of photos on his Facebook page in various poses mimicking Lee and has hopes of being just as famous.

“I want to be a champion in my country and a Hollywood star,” he said.

His real name is Abbas Alizada, although he prefers to be called “the Afghan Bruce Lee.”

Alizada trains at a palace in Kabul that was destroyed by decades of fighting, and the destruction that surrounds him, he says, is sad but inspiring.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom announced in a blog post Wednesday that it now has over 300 million users, sharing more than 70 million photos and videos each day.

By comparison Twitter reported 284 million users in its most recent Third Quarter 2014 Results.

In the same post, Instagram also announced that it is finally going to verify accounts for celebrities, athletes and brands.

Facebook owns Instagram, and there’s been a little bit of tension between them and Twitter since it was acquired. In 2012, Instagram pictures were no longer viewable in Tweets.

What are some Angry Birds stats?

To celebrate Angry Birds' fifth birthday, Rovio Entertainment has announced some interesting stats about the franchise. Angry Birds has been downloaded 2.5 billion times by 1.7 billion smartphone users from around the world, for instance.

But that's not all: mobile gamers have collectively flung over 600 billion birds to date and earned 150 billion stars across all the Angry Bird titles. For comparison, our galaxy - the Milky Way - only contains some 100 billion stars.

When will the Angry Birds film premiere?

The Angry Birds film, which is expected to be a 3D computer-animated movie, has a set release date for 1 July 2016. It is being developed, produced, and financed by Rovio Entertainment as well as Sony Pictures Imageworks.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will also handle worldwide distribution. So far, Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly are attached to the project as directors, with Jon Vitti as the film's screenwriter and John Cohen and Catherine Winder as producers.

Creators using the YouTube Audio Library can now see the copyright status of songs they search for before they include them in a video. When users search for ad-supported songs, they can now see if using such a song will affect their monetization. Thus, fans who want to add Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" can see upfront that they will not be able to monetize their video. The Audio Library also tells you if song inclusion will affect where your video can be viewed.

First city to get Google Street View

Dubai is first Arab city to get Google Street View

You can now see some of the tallest buildings in the world on Google Street View.

Google has expanded the service to the city to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the company announced Monday. It marks the first time a city in an Arab country will be added to the feature.

Google tells us it began mapping the city earlier this year, but took a break in the summer to avoid the city's infamous haze and ensure clear photos

The Street View maps cover new places like Sheikh Zayed Road, the longest street in the United Arab Emirates and the enormous Dubai Mall as well historical sites like the Deira Spice Souk and Dubai Creek.

It's not the first time Street View has been used anywhere in the country, however. Gogole previously mapped out parts of the Liwa Desert in the Emirates — by placing its Trekker camera on camels.

Tired of slow Wi-Fi? Fear not: Faster Wi-Fi speeds are possible, if you're willing to work (and pay) for them.
The good news is that many broadband companies are doing their part. Many cable providers are now offering lightning-fast Internet speeds. But if your Wi-Fi router isn't set up correctly, even Google (GOOGL, Tech30) Fiber can feel like dial-up.

If you're brave and determined enough, here are five tips to make your Wi-Fi faster.
1) Choose the right channel and frequency. Did you know that your Wi-Fi router has channels? Sometimes, just changing the channel on your router can make a world of difference, particularly if you live in an apartment building with lots of interference from other Wi-Fi signals. Other technologies like cordless phones and microwaves can interfere with Wi-Fi as well.
Try channels 1, 6 or 11. If those don't work, go to 2 or 10 next. Hunt and peck until you feel like your speeds are improving.
Modern Wi-Fi routers also broadcast in different frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Generally speaking, 2.4 GHz is better for bigger homes with multiple floors, because the signal travels farther and can more easily penetrate through walls. But for smaller rooms or homes, 5 GHz is the way to go: it offers much faster speeds, albeit in a shorter range.

2) Move your router to its ideal position. Think high and centrally located. A tall shelf in the middle of a room is the best place for your router.
If your Wi-Fi router has antennas, and you need the signal to go through a wall, position the antennas in straight angles so they go right through the wall. Signals that travel through walls at an angle can severely reduce Wi-Fi speeds.
Also, it's important to adapt to your surroundings -- ceiling height, room size and certain building materials can adversely affect Wi-Fi speeds. Keep your router away from thick walls made of brick or concrete.
But the biggest enemies of Wi-Fi are water and windows. Nearby pipes and even plants (there's water in all those leaves) can slow Wi-Fi to a crawl. Reflective surfaces can make Wi-Fi signals bounce at strange angles.

3) Make sure your router is secure. Putting a password on your router or limiting which devices can access your network will keep Wi-Fi moochers from slowing down your network. Also, there are plenty of other good reasons to secure your router beyond faster Wi-Fi speeds.

4) Get a newer router. Are you using the Wi-Fi router your cable company gave you? Did you buy your router during the Bush administration? You probably aren't using the best technology.
New routers have smart technology that can send signals directly to devices (instead of beaming signals randomly around a room). They offer faster speeds, multiple frequencies, and smart home technologies that know which of your gazillion connected devices to give priority to (i.e. whatever device you're streaming Netflix on).

5) Buy a network extender. Cheaper than a new router, but still somewhat expensive, network extenders can boost a signal in those hard-to-reach corners of your home. You can even use some old routers as a network extender if you have one lying around.

Five Android Features I Miss Most When Using An iPhone

Before I dare utter another word, I’d like to make it known that when it comes to the battle of the mobile ecosystems, I’m completely impartial. I love iOS, iPhone, and Apple products in general, but there’s something about Android, namely Android smartphones, that always has me flirting with the likes of HTC One, among others. There’s no doubt, at least, to my mind, that Tim Cook and his team have pushed a pivotal piece of software in iOS 8, adding a number of features that many have long since pined for, but there are still some features that I really miss whenever I’m using an iPhone.

I’m sure I’ll get some abuse for this; I’ve been called a biased, rotten scoundrel fanboy (insert expletive here) many a time by the wonderful souls who take the time out to email me, so I can handle it, and hey, if you do have an opinion on this matter, you can drop me a mail or simply leave your thoughts in the comments.

Right, without further ado, let me quickly jot down my top five most loved Android smartphone features, which, depending on how you look at it, could also be received as my five major gripes with the iPhone.

1. Physical Back and Menu Buttons

When I first picked up my HTC One M7 last year – you may remember, I made a bit of a thing about it during those first few weeks – it did take me a while to get used to having the back button, which was placed conveniently within thumb’s reach rather than in the top-left corner á la iOS. But now, I’m an ardent fan of this system, which makes a little more sense in terms of everyday functionality.
The counter argument, of course, is that the iPhone 6 uses almost every millimeter of the face for the display, but Apple needn’t actually place physical buttons on the device itself.
Instead, such a feature could be coded into iOS, presenting users with the option of a few action keys along the bottom, and although I’m probably clutching at straws in hoping that such a feature will be added any time soon, it’s one that I truly believe would enrich the iPhone experience in general.

2. A Notification Light

On my old spare phone, an un-namable LG with generally ghastly functionality thanks to its lack of processing power, one quirk I always appreciated was the multicolored notification light. If somebody pinged me a message, I could set it as green for, say, WhatsApp, blue for Facebook messages, and red for those rarest of Google+ notifications. At a glance, I’d know which app the incoming message was coming from, and thus, have a vague idea of its importance.
A subtle light around the Touch ID button would be a perfect location for such a feature, and with an undeniable level of “cool” factor, is a plausible upgrade for a future generation of iPhone.

3. Custom Launchers

One of the things that really irks me about Android is that, depending on your device, manufacturer or model, you can be met with a completely different experience from handset to handset. But a quick trip to the Play Store and one download of Smart Launcher later, and I’m back on my feet – enjoying a mobile experience that I personally find more comfortable, fluid, and suited to my needs than stock Android, iOS, or even Windows Phone.
Apple’s home screen has become iconic, and if custom launchers came into play, it’d lose a bit of its identity. With that said, it would be epic if we could morph iOS into something better meeting to our individual requirements, and as such, I hold out very ambitious hope that this will occur in a future update.

4. App Management

When you slip through to Settings on Android and check out your apps, you have much more jurisdiction over your setup than you could dream of on iOS. You can readily kill an app, clear data, and notably, manage defaults, meaning that if you do want to use Firefox, say, instead of Chrome, Google isn’t going to get offended by it.
The app management benefits on Android only really hit home recently, when Google rolled out a new Materially-Designed Messages app to replace the native Hangouts and Messages. After using, of course, my custom launcher to hide those aforementioned utilities, I quickly set Messenger as the default, and since then, I have all but forgotten that those apps I don’t use even exist. If I had such powers on iOS and iPhone, it’s fair to say that I’d have less reservations about using one as my daily runner.

5. MicroSD slot

Yep, sure, this is a bit of a cynical one, and the kind of suggestion that will never become a reality, but as idealistic as it may be, I’d love the flexibility of removable storage.
I know full well that Apple’s long-standing ethos of delivering only on-board storage is a testament to iOS’s seamlessness, but with high grade flash storage available so cheaply nowadays, it would certainly be nice from both an expansion-of-storage and a versatility aspect.
With a 128GB model iPhone 6 / 6 Plus now here, there’s always that, but with the cost of the priciest iPhone 6 Plus running you dangerously close to the $1,000 mark, those in search of breathing room are paying one heck of a premium for the privilege of doing so.
So, those are my five most enjoyed features of Android that I miss whenever I’m using an iPhone. I could have gone on – multiple users and split-screen multitasking, to name but a couple – however these are the major areas that affect me on a personal level.
As I said before, I’d love to hear your feedback, and yes, in order to keep things fair, I’ll also be producing a similar article on a few features that iOS users can legitimately laud over Droidsters as well, so stay tuned for that!

Taig iOS 8.1.1 Jailbreak Released

New iOS 8.1.1 jailbreak is out! TaiG has released a jailbreak for both iOS 8.1.1 and iOS 8.2 beta running on compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. MuscleNerd of Team Evad3rs took to Twitter to confirm the release.

Looks like TaiG just released a jailbreak for 8.1.1 (and 8.0,8.1,8.2beta). Best to wait a few days just in case.

As MuscleNerd has suggested, it is best to wait a bit before attempting the jailbreak.

TaiG is a Chinese based outfit which was part of first iOS 7 jailbreak from Evad3rs released on Christmas eve last year.
Apple is still signing the iOS 8.1 firmware. If you want to jailbreak using Pangu, you can do so bydowngrading from 8.1.1 to iOS 8.1 and then using Pangu to jailbreak.
TaiG is currently available for Windows only. No word on when or if the Mac release will be available.

What’s Next For Firefox?

Things on the desktop aren’t looking great for Firefox, but Mozilla is also at best an also-ran on mobile. Apple didn’t allow third-party browser engines on its platform during the early days and even as Android gained in popularity, it still took Mozilla a while to launch a useful version of Firefox on that platform. Then, over the last few years, Mozilla tried to make up ground by launching its own platform. That was an audacious effort and I can only laud it for its effort to bring low-cost phones to developing countries — but so far, that effort has barely paid off except for in a couple of very small markets (and now that there are plenty of cheap Android phones around, I doubt it stands much of a chance in those markets either).

Mozilla has now partnered with Yahoo to power its search in the U.S. starting next month. And while Yahoo may not be the down-and-out company it seemed to be just a few years ago, it’s not exactly a powerhouse when it comes to search. This deal may gain Yahoo a few extra searchers, but it probably isn’t going to help Mozilla gain market share (because nobody is looking for a browser with built-in Yahoo search).

There’s a lot of excitement about a class of materials called perovskites that promise to deliver efficient and cheap solar cells. Watching progress in perovskite research is fascinating because perovskites have been able to boost their efficiencies — the percentage of available sunlight that they convert to electricity — more rapidly than any other solar cell material that has been mass produced or being developed in labs.

In fact, efficiency figures jumped from around 10 percent to 20 percent in mere two years.

So what is a perovskite? The name came from a minerologist, Lev Perovski, and was given to a material discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in 1839. That compound was calcium titanium oxide.

The perovskite compounds that are being tinkered with to make solar cells aren’t calcium titanium oxide at all, but they do share the same crystalline structure. For example, Oxford Photovoltaics, a U.K. startup that hopes to be among the first

to commercialize its perovskite technology, uses organicmetallic halide to create that same crystalline structure. The compound contains methylammonium, lead, iodine and chlorine and can absorb a greater spectrum of sunlight than silicon, the material that makes up over 80 percent of the solar cells on the market today.

The dream of a smartwatch is finally a reality so why not a laser watch?

The LaserWatch features a machined metal body, LED watch module for a screen, clear carbon coated cover and a whopping 1,500-milliwatt laser. The laser is so powerful it can actually pop balloons and even light candles. The ideal party trick then.

The watch took Priebe around 40 hours to make so he said if he were asked to make more he'd charge at least $300. So getting one isn't an impossibility then.

1. Going to a shop to rent a movie

This is the Friday or Saturday night ritual of trudging down to the local movie rental store and picking a DVD (or video). Remember the offers we all thought were so great – 2 movies for 2 nights for the price of 1. Late fees are another thing children today will never have to deal with.

2. Cassettes, floppy disks and VHS tapes

Making a mix tape was the closest thing some children of yesteryear had to making a piece of art. It used to be ghetto blasters but today it is all iTunes and Spotify. Today is also the era of the internet where files can be transferred across the globe in an instant, while back in the day we used floppy disks. And who does not fondly remember the old VHS tape that used to get stuck in the machine half way through a movie?

3. The ninth planet

Whatever happened to Pluto anyway? And what the heck is a Dwarf planet!?

4. Having no idea who is calling

You used to have to answer a phone call to find out who was calling. Life was so difficult back then.

1. Motorcycle road racing

Road racing is a form of motorcycle racing popular in parts of Europe, particularly Ireland. The races take place on normal roads, which are incredibly narrow. The racers have to deal with bumps, curbs, road markings, hedges, telephone poles, walls and fences at speeds similar to those achieved on proper race tracks. It is ridiculously dangerous.

2. Bull riding

Take one big, angry bull and add a cowboy, equipped with little more protection than a gum shield, and you have the perfect recipe for danger.

Go to the top of the hill. Lie down a few inches above the road surface on an elongated skate board with no brakes. Wait for the starter to say go and try to be the first to get to the bottom of the hill. Oh, and try not to get killed or seriously injured in the process.

4. Rugby

Rugby is a sport that is not very well understood in countries where it is not played (if the truth be told it is not well understood in countries where it is played). In terms of this list, think of it as American football (huge men trying to hurt each other over an oval ball) without the helmets or body armor.

We are not talking about horse racing around a dusty oval track here. We are talking about jump racing with the pinnacle event being the Grand National in the UK. It involves about 40 horses running around a 4 mile track which has 30 fences for them to jump, some of which are over 5 feet tall. Only a fraction of the horses that start each race manage to finish it.

Samsung has been working on bendable screens for smartphones

over the past few years, but the company is now promising that

display technology will be ready to arrive in real products starting

next year.

Specifically, Samsung says it will be making between

30,000 and 40,000 flexible displays per month by the end

of 2015. The first device to use this bendable technology

will launch by the end of next year, but Samsung says

that "nothing has been decided on the finished

product."

There's an important difference between flexible and bendable.

Phones such as Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Round, and LG G Flex have screens that are slightly curved, which supposedly offers a few benefits such as the ability to see notifications when the screen is turned off and a more ergonomic design that fits into your pocket more easily.

Based on the way Samsung is describing its newer technology, however, it sounds like you'll be able to actually fold and bend future phones. Of course, developing a bendable screen is only half the battle — manufacturers still need to find a way to make processors, batteries, and all the other components inside smartphones flexible too. LG and Samsung have both already started working on batteries that can bend and fold.
