If you want a quick reference for customers or yourself, which seems to be updated as more products become supported under 2008 R2, go to the Microsoft website here.

The most interesting aspect, at least to me, is that there looks to be upcoming support for Server 2008 R2 for OCS 2007 R2 and later versions, and as mentioned on the Exchange blog, support for Exchange 2007 SP2+. The reversal of support on Exchange is a very welcome one in my eyes.

What I am about to describe below definitely falls under the 'unsupported' and 'not-an-intended-use' category for Intel Turbo Memory. I debated about posting this for a few months but it has worked well enough for me that I feel secure in describing how to do this. Of course, if something breaks, please let me know in the comments section and we'll get it documented.

Typically Intel Turbo Memory is included as a mini-PCIe option on laptops and some desktops, and provides an embedded version of ReadyBoost and/or ReadyDrive. Most computers have enough RAM these days so the boost from ReadyBoost is pretty minimal.

With that in mind, I figured I would try to see if I could re-purpose the Turbo Memory. In Windows 7 (as of driver version 1.10.0.1012), the memory is exposed to the OS as a Storage Controller with a disk volume of IMD-0.

By default, it will automatically enable and control the entire volume.

What you want to do is open diskmgmt.msc and look for a volume that is about 75% of advertised size of the RAM. In my case, I have 2GB which shows up as 1.37GB due to some of the space being used for ReadyDrive.

If you set the View to Disk List, the Device Type will be listed as UNKNOWN instead of IDE or USB or SCSI.

You'll want to delete this volume but make sure it is the Turbo Memory! After deleting the volume, create a new simple MBR volume from what you just deleted. Format the drive as FAT16 with 64KB cluster size. You can use other block sizes if you want less waste on smaller files. NTFS is a bit of an overkill for most scenarios too. Feel free to experiment and report your findings.

After formatting, assign it a drive letter and enjoy a persistent RAM disk, as long as you don't rebuild your computer or upgrade your Turbo Memory driver.

The end result will look something like this:

Uses for this new drive

1. Store your Windows Search index on the new drive. In my case, under R:\TEMP\INDEX\. You can easily move your index by going into the Control Panel, under Indexing Options, under Advanced and selecting Select New. After restarting the Windows Search service, the index will move from the original location to the newly created Turbo Memory drive.

Why do this? Less hard drive thrashing overall and faster search results inside Windows and Outlook. Instead of the index and the content residing on the same drive spindle, you have a 'pseudo' SSD dedicated to your Windows Search index. The old joke about making Vista faster was to do net stop wsearch, but this is no longer needed using this method.

2. Set your TEMP and TMP environment variables to use the drive for temporary storage/scratch space. In my case, I set my user TEMP and TMP variables to R:\TEMP\USER and my system TEMP and TMP variables to R:\TEMP\SYSTEM. Make sure to create these directories on the drive before applying the settings.

3. Internet Explorer disk cache location - I set IE to store cache inside R:\TEMP\IE and limit the size to a small amount.

4. Firefox disk cache location - Using about:config, I set browser.cache.disk.parent_directory to R:\TEMP\FF. In order to avoid stalls on fsync on Firefox 3.x due to SQLite, you can also add toolkit.storage.synchronous set to 0 in about:config. I know this quirk is being addressed in Firefox 3.5+, so it will soon be a non-issue. You do have a slight risk of corruption of Firefox SQLite tables, but in practice, I have not experienced any.

Things to watch out for
If you do upgrade the Turbo Memory driver in the future, you will want to reset your TEMP and TMP variables back to the original values in order to ensure that you can log in properly into your computer. The Windows Search index and IE/FF caches can be dynamically regenerated after you redo the drive setup.

I have experienced scenarios/programs that required more than 1.3GB of free temporary space so I sometimes set the variables back to the original hard drive location on a case by case basis.

Conclusion
Please let me know if you think of new uses for this and I will add them to this blog entry. It has worked well for me since W7 RC and it should work well for you too. It has even inspired me into looking into cheap 4GB Robson modules or a secondary bay SSD.

I didn't discover this one, so I'm just the messenger passing word on - KB 974571 (part of Patch Tuesday today - specifically related to Crypto-API/ASN1) will make OCS think it is an evaluation version that has expired. Uninstall KB 974571 and OCS works again. You will want to apply the KB once an updated patch, or an updated patch for OCS becomes available. I've verified this problem in my lab too.
As you can see from the announcement here, this is pretty big news. One of the biggest complaints about the PIC (public IM) functionality of OCS is the fact that it would not interface with Jabber/Google Talk. Thankfully, that all changes today with the release of the XMPP Gateway.

On a bad note, it looks as though virtualization of this role isn't officially supported, but I am hoping that changes as time goes on and Microsoft can run the software components through the various validation tests. The other unfortunate aspect is that it cannot be co-located on an Edge server role.

All in all, a step in the right direction. They also announced that the AOL PIC license shares the same type of "free"-ness that the MSN PIC license received a few months ago. Basically if you have LCS/OCS Standard CAL with Software Assurance, the MSN and AOL PIC licenses get thrown in with the deal.

For those who don't know what the PreCallDiagnostic Tool is, make sure to check out the description here:
The PreCallDiagTool is an application that reports expected audio quality as it relates to the network effect. The tool should be installed on any desktop or laptop PC that suffers from inconsistent network connection quality. The PreCallDiagTool can provide a quick check of the current network conditions and also preserve a history of quality data to let users profile their network performance over time or other conditions. The tool is particularly useful for home/mobile users and users using WIFI access points.

The diagnostic application first shipped with the OCS 2007 R2 Resource Kit.

On a good note, this was a welcome addition to my arsenal of debugging voice quality and network quality of end user machines.
On a bad note, it was 64-bit only and a good majority of the Office Communication deploys are to 32-bit operating systems.

Thankfully, they've released a 32-bit version of this application but the documentation on the syntax and use of the tool is particularly sparse.

For the 32-bit version of this application:
When extracted, the application install files are copied to %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2\PCDResKit\PreCallDiagTool\

For the 64-bit version of this application:
When extracted, the application install files are copied to %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2\ResKit\PreCallDiagTool\

To install the application, you need to run PCDSetup.exe with elevated rights.
After installation, the application resides in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft\PreCallDiagTool\
If you happen to install the 32-bit version on a 64-bit OS, replace %ProgramFiles% with %ProgramFiles(x86)%.

If you want to configure the application during first-run use, you will want to execute the program with elevated rights because the program will store the XML configuration file in the same directory as the executable. Anytime you want to use the in-program configuration options to change the setup, you will need to run this program elevated, unfortunately.

Typically, I've gotten used to just editing the XML file (PreCallDiag.xml) using Notepad.

Hopefully I am just being dense in the configuration of this tool, but I cannot seem to figure out how to specify a username or password within the PreCallDiag.xml file. This is when you would want to specify UseDefaultCredentials to false. You would want to do this for computers that are not joined to the domain or that have a different log in username than the current user. Does anyone know how?

Looking through the executable for configuration keywords, I did spot two undocumented XML keys, namely ServerUri and ServerPort.

I believe the proper syntax, if you want to set the key UseSipAutomaticConfiguration to false, is the following:

add key="ServerUri" value="youredgeserveravname.contoso.com"
add key="ServerPort" value="443"

Anyway, the program seems to be a bit finicky but when you have it running, the screenshot ends up looking like this:

You also end up with a debugging text file called precalldiaglog.txt and a much more interesting file called precalldiagMetricsLog.txt which includes the data collected while the program was running.

There isn't a lot of study material for this exam, outside of an actual OCS Ignite class, but I suspect that is on purpose. Treat the lab guide and materials provided like a Bible for the test.

There is a general Microsoft Learning page buried on the MS site for the exam here, and I suggest you take the 70-638 OCS exam before this one.

If you come from a PBX/other-VOIP platform background, you will have an easier time with 74-924 because it is very voice/PBX centric.

I'm just trying to highlight some of the lesser known documents that are coming out now that Windows 7 has been released - everyone else does a great job of covering the major downloads so I don't typically clutter up my blog with those type of announcements. This also is a good time killer when stuck in an airport lobby.

In particular, here is a good document explaining the changes related to 3G/EVDO/etc mobile broadband drivers with Windows 7:

Windows 7 mobile broadband drivers use the new features introduced by Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) 6.20. In Windows 7, mobile broadband devices integrate differently with Windows 7 than they did with Windows Vista® and Windows XP, when they appeared to the operating system Ethernet or dial up networking/modem devices. This paper discusses important changes in the mobile broadband drivers for Windows 7. This information applies for the Windows 7 operating system.

Some PBX integrations can be particularly tricky, especially when they are legacy PBX is multiple versions behind the current releases or the hardware is failing. It reminds me a little bit of some of the old Exchange 5.5 and Novell migrations I have done in the past, except in a different kind of environment. On a good note, you eventually become pretty knowledgeable about different PBX systems and their quirks, and how to work through them the best you can.

With that said, I stumbled upon a particularly interesting blog post by a MS employee about using the MSPL scripting language to manipulate SIP packets and fake a 180 ring back. Ultimately, the ideal fix is to get the existing PBX to do the right thing, but sometimes that is not always a viable option.

Read about the ring back workaround here.

In the upcoming months, I'm going to dig more into MSPL and see exactly how creative you can get with this language. It could prove to be very handy for problematic/buggy SIP implementations or as a stop-gap measure to work around something that OCS normally cannot handle. I'm thinking of situations where you need to do something special/different between the mediation server and the PBX gateway to make things work correctly.

Of course, keep in mind any custom made scripts you deploy will be the first things that Microsoft PSS will want to disable in a troubleshooting scenario. It definitely would put you into an 'unsupported' scenario.

The June 30th, 2009 Outlook update (KB 970944) includes many updates that are of interest mostly to developers but I have highlighted a few of the updates that have proven to be noticeable to end users:

This hotfix provides an improvement to Outlook 2007 if performance is slow after you install 2007 Office Service Pack 2 (SP2).

In your mailbox, a folder contains thousands of subfolders, such as the Inbox folder or the Calendar folder. After you install the February cumulative update, when you try to check the size of the folder, you receive an error in the Folder Size dialog box. After that, when you try to open the folder or some subfolder, you receive the following error message: Cannot display the folder. Your server administrator has limited the number of items you can open simultaneously. Try closing messages you have opened or removing attachments and images from unsent messages you are composing

You start Outlook 2007 in Cached Exchange Mode and with the reading pane active. If an e-mail message that contains a custom form that has code is displayed in the reading pane, CPU usage increases or Outlook even crashes. This problem occurs after you install Office SP2.

When you are running Outlook 2007 on a Windows Vista-based computer that uses high DPI (for example, 120 DPI), icons for custom forms will not be displayed.

On a computer that is running Windows 7, the Delete and Sync operations perform slowly in Outlook 2007 after you install SP2.

A hotfix enables you to set the download mode for IMAP accounts in Outlook 2007 and to configure the setting to sync the mailbox when you exit Outlook 2007

When you send an e-mail message from a shared mailbox in Outlook 2007, the sent message is not saved in the Sent Items folder of the shared mailbox

In Outlook 2007, when you view a group schedule in Calendar, the text in the group schedule is blurry. In this case, visually-impaired users cannot read the text in the group schedule.

Currently in beta, but available for basic OCS connectivity/certificate tests is the Microsoft OCS Remote Connectivity Analyzer.

I would only use test user accounts when debugging issues with this website just to err on the side of caution.
This will most likely be my first stop whenever I'm trying to help someone troubleshoot an OCS edge server connectivity issue.
Right now you can manually specify your server settings or have the server attempt to autodiscover your OCS settings.

According to the website, future plans include: "Deeper level of diagnostic information - MSDiagnostics header", and "Additional tests".

An example run through of a diagnostic:

Attempting to Resolve the host name sip.tiensivu.com in DNS.
Host successfully Resolved
Additional Details
IP(s) returned: 224.0.1.59

Testing TCP Port 443 on host sip.tiensivu.com to ensure it is listening/open.
The port was opened successfully.

Testing SSLCertificate for validity.
The certificate passed all validation requirements.validation checks.
Additional Details
Subject: CN=sip.tiensivu.com, OU=IT, O=Tiensivu, L=Rockford, S=Michigan, C=US, Issuer OU=Win611ForHomeGroups, O=HomeLab, C=US

Testing OCS remote sign in through Access Edge Server: Port Number (sip.tiensivu.com:443), for SignInAddress (honeypot@tiensivu.com).
The specified user successfully signed in remotely through the Access Edge Server.
Additional Details
Registration is successfully completed.
4 new updates of interest to OCS server admins and users came out yesterday.

Cumulative fixes for Office Communicator (bolded items I have seen firsthand)

In Communicator 2007 R2 when you use Tanjay to call a user, you hear both the ringing and the audio from the user side

Your voice is discontinuous when you use Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 to make a call on a Windows 7 or a Windows Server 2008 R2-based remote desktop

This cumulative update, together with update 969696 and update 969821, fixes the following issue:
When a delegate on behalf of a manager tries to use the Conferencing Add-in for Outlook to schedule a live meeting or to schedule a conference, the delegate's information instead of manager's information displays in the conferencing request unexpectedly. To resolve this issue, you have to apply update 969695, update 969696, and update 969821.

Cumulative fixes for Office Communications Server 2007 R2

Error message when you use the Live Meeting Conferencing Add-in for Outlook to schedule a meeting in Outlook 2007: "An error occurred while executing this command. If this error persists, please contact your Live Meeting Administrator"

When a delegate tries to use the Conferencing Add-in for Outlook to schedule a live meeting or to schedule a conference on behalf of a manager, the delegate's information instead of the manager's information displays in the conferencing request

An additional "/" character appears at the end of a meeting lobby URL when you use the Live Meeting Add-in for Outlook to create a meeting request
I've been known to be a bit of a 'chronic tinkerer', which if you think of in health terms, sounds rather disturbing.
I'm referring to my habit of finding new ways to use tools or devices in ways they weren't originally designed for.
Our home's wireless network infrastructure and internet connectivity are shining examples of these mad scientist experiments.

This trend continues with the box that is sitting in front of me: The eBox-3300-JSK, as part of the Microsoft Sparks will Fly contest.

My daughters like working on projects with Dad whenever possible, especially if it involves computers or animals. It doesn't surprise me too much based on our household. My youngest daughter (now 5 years old) completely "owned" her computer in 2008, much to my chagrin. My oldest daughter (almost 8 years old) was showing me map exploit tricks to use in a popular XBox 360/PC zombie game this past weekend.

In an effort to put that kind of knowledge/curiosity to good use, we're going to build an embedded solution for our chickens. It will involve webcams, internet connectivity, motion detection and servos. I am mostly going to use items that are around the house, due to budget and time constraints. My free time to work on this in the short term will be limited, but I have some good ideas to run with. I like to dabble in programming when it isn't part of my regular job, so this will be fun.

In a somewhat related topic, I have some articles/postings coming up in the near future once work and life settles down a bit.

In the past, NVidia had the upper hand when it came to driver quality in Windows 2K/XP era, but these days, ATI/AMD seems to have the more stable drivers for Vista and Windows 7.

With that said, check out the new release mentioned here and download them from here.

As always, for the mobility chipsets, I recommend using the Driver Heaven ModTool.

Some long overdue guidance from Microsoft about site resiliency. I suspect quite a bit will change as future versions roll out.

This white paper describes a site resiliency solution for Office Communications Server 2007 R2. The solution includes an Enterprise pool that spans two geographically separate sites. The solution provides a failover mechanism between the two sites to ensure that Office Communications Server functionality such as instant messaging, presence, and conferencing remains available even if one of the sites becomes unavailable.

This white paper is divided into three main sections:

1. The Solution section provides an overview of the tested and supported site resiliency solution described in this paper.
2. The Test Methodology section describes the testing topology, expected behavior, and test results.
3. The Findings and Recommendations section provides practical guidance for deploying your own failover solution.

To successfully follow this paper, you should have a thorough understanding of Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Windows Server 2008 Failover Clustering.
Preferably one that can work with Office Communications Server 2007 R2.

Unfortunately, as of the most recent Communicator client for Mac, there isn't true SIP phone/PBX support. I know someone out there has had to tackle this problem before, so I am curious if anyone has some recommendations?
Homescreen support for new homescreens in Windows Mobile 6.5+ phones.

Integration within the phone dialer for Windows Mobile 6.5+ phones.

Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 now recognizes when the phone is roaming, and by default does not sign in to roaming networks.

Additional support for joining conference calls from a Windows Mobile appointment. To do this, press Menu, and then press Join Conference.

Enables users to log on with a username of the format user@example.com, in addition to domain\user.

When placing Call via Work calls, callbacks are now automatically accepted.

Microsoft Installer (MSI) installation on Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) fails.

AT&T FUZE devices set for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) connection cannot handle voice and data at the same time. This causes Call via Work calls to fail unless the device is reverted to 3rd Generation (3G) by disabling HSDPA.
Although you can use the tag.yaml to use the auto update mechanism inside Digsby, there have been times when the update process hasn't worked, or you want to download the latest build *right now*.

It isn't documented very well on the Digsby site, but you can download the latest alpha builds from here.

If you browse the long list of updates for this Outlook 2007 SP2 update (which can be applied to Outlook 2007 SP1 from the looks of it), you'll notice a fairly innocent looking fix:

"When you are running Outlook 2007 and Office Communicator 2007 on a client computer, Communicator unexpectedly creates persistent Outlook connections to Exchange Server."

This is a bit of an understatement because I've noticed a difference in the number of connections (logical and physical) even when Office Communicator isn't involved with Outlook 2007.

To give an example, this is what my connection status dialog box (outlook /rpcdiag) looks like before:

After:

Take into consideration, many times my Internet connection is over an EVDO Rev A data line and the importance of this change skyrockets. I want every little extra bit of bandwidth left for other applications if at all possible.

As pointed out by some of the Exchange gurus at Microsoft, the connections listed in those dialog boxes represent the 'logical' RPC connections back to the Exchange server. The actual amount of physical connections (as in, connections viewable by doing a 'netstat -a -n -o' and filtering for your Exchange client access server) will drop by a smaller amount.

Either way, this has sped up Outlook a considerable amount even compared to unpatched Outlook Service Pack 2, which is leaps and bounds faster than any previous Outlook 2007 version.

This has the potential of reduced bandwidth usage and reduced connection counts on your Exchange server and/or ISA setup. Overall, a great update so far.

Read more about the update and request the binaries here.

Thanks go out to Gary Cooper for pointing out this Outlook update.

This one might seem obvious but it actually makes a difference in performance numbers overall. You also avoid the journaling aspect of NTFS that is unneeded with a cache device.

If you dedicate the device to ReadyBoost, you will only have one file on the filesystem, so any slack/waste in the 64K cluster size will be made up from the lack of $MFT reservations.

Also noteworthy but often overlooked, you can multiplex ReadyBoost devices in Windows 7 so you can use multiple ReadyBoost drives if you really want. This helps out XP Mode on memory starved machines quite a bit.

If you are looking for a Windows 7 compatible version of the Turbo Memory driver from Intel, use version 1.10.0.1003 or higher. You can find a version of this on Station Driver's page here. I don't believe these have reached Intel's page yet, even though they are WHQL signed. The interesting side effect is that the new driver will enable ReadyBoost on the Turbo Ram without assigning a drive letter or file system to it. Pretty cool.

To give you some background without giving too much away, I've had my e-mail hosted on an Exchange 2010 server since around April. I also take advantage of Office Communications Server 2007 R2 quite a bit. I consider my OCS phone number my primary number. I also have a local office phone number and work cell phone. All in all, that's 3 voicemail "boxes" to keep track of.

Most of the time, I'm out of the office, but I still want people that call the office to reach me as long as I have cell signal. Many times while inside buildings or datacenters, cell signal is poor or you aren't allowed to bring your cell phone inside. Usually, if I don't have cell signal, I'll have some kind of Internet data connection, so this is a great example of using OCS for reach-ability while at a customer site. Of course, this assumes you have permission to connect into their network.

Where am I going with this? Unified Communications/Messaging. I know you probably hear that buzz word quite a bit, but this is a good example.

I forward my office phone to my OCS phone number.
I forward my work phone number to my OCS phone number, if there is no answer on the cell phone.

Why do I go through all this effort to get missed calls to my OCS number?

This:

I did edit this message to say "name" instead of the actual name of the person called. Ditto for the phone number involved.

If the person that left the voicemail spoke clearly and wasn't in a noisy environment, Exchange 2010 generates a decent text transcription. Many times, I don't have to listen to the actual voice message.

End result: I avoid having to remember 3 different set of voice mail PINs. I avoid having to remember to check the office voice mail system. If I am in a meeting and can't take a call, I can read the voicemail message inside Outlook without ducking out to check voicemail on my cell phone.

Please be aware that most cellular providers will charge you minutes for forwarded calls, which is the reason I have it setup to only forward the call if there is no answer or the phone line is busy.

As of 06/02/09, the phone codes to do this on the Verizon network are:

Conditional forwarding (only on "no answer" of cell phone):
*71 plus 10 digit phone number
*73 cancels

Unconditional forwarding (all calls forwarded):
*72 plus ten digit phone number
*73 cancels

Busy transfer:
*90 plus ten digit phone number
*900 cancels

As an example, if I wanted to conditionally forward my calls to 616-555-1234, I would enter in *716165551234 into my cell phone and hit [Send].

If you are not on a "home" Verizon tower/network, these codes will most likely not work. Not all phone numbers seem to work, and I do believe you need to have the 'Call Forwarding' option as part of your cell phone plan.

I am sure many other providers have the same type of functionality, but Verizon is the only provider that has a tower near my house.
Thanks go out to Britt Baubie for the Verizon information.

I discovered this one by accident when trying to use Mobility Modder to update an older laptop running Windows 7 to run the latest Catalyst drivers. Unfortunately, you can install the new drivers but they will refuse to load with a cryptic "Driver reported a problem." message.

Wonder which graphics cards (desktop, mobile and AIW) should use Catalyst 9.3 with for now?
Radeon 9500, 9550, 9600, 9700, and 9800 Series
Radeon Xpress, X300, X550, X600, X700, X800, X850, X1050, X1200, X1250 X1300, X1550, X1600, X1650, X1800, X1900, and X2100 Series

Unfortunately, that is a pretty sizable group of graphics cards that came out not too long ago.

You can read more about it here.
