This sermon offered seven reasons. Because:
1)	God remarries us.
2)	Sex is not essential to happiness
3)	Sexual desire is designed to drive us toward other people
4)	Sex in marriage is a walled garden
5)	Sexual integrity blesses children
6)	Sexual fragmentation destroys
7)	No muscles build yes muscles
The first of these reasons contains the gospel heart of sexuality: That God only betroths himself to spiritual adulterers, continually giving grace to us in our sexual adulteries as well.
The sermon closed with seven quick “hows” for keeping the seventh commandment.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Guard Your Garden</itunes:title>

Guard Your Garden

Prize All Lives

Discussion Guide for Exodus 20:13

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Exodus 20:13</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>The sixth commandment has both negative and positive applications. Negative applications cover extreme, systemic, and everyday actions. On the extreme level, God prohibits any action that ends another human life unlawfully. These differ in seriousness according to the degree of premeditation, yet in Christ they are all forgivable: murder (1st and 2nd degree), manslaughter (voluntary or involuntary), homicide (reckless or negligent), and almost every form of suicide, abortion, and euthanasia. Historically, most Christians have understood “lawful” forms of killing to include just warfare, self-defense, and capital punishment. On the systemic level, God also prohibits our participation in unjust systems that devalue, diminish and ultimately shorten the lives of another group of people – as racism in America has, and continues to do. On the everyday level, Jesus makes clear in Matthew 5:21-26 that the heart of the commandment prohibits any attitude of self-righteous hatred toward other people, as well as the demeaning words we often direct at them (or to others about them). In this light, we are all unmasked as murderers, desperately in need of the grace of Jesus to forgive us. Positively, then, the sixth commandment challenges Christians who are saved by grace to consistently prize the life, dignity and flourishing of all human beings. One of the most important ways we can do this is by adopting habits of biblical conflict resolution, especially with fellow Christians. The more we tame our tongues, tell the truth, forgive others, and seek to reconcile with our enemies, the more clearly others will see the passionately people-loving heart of God. </itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Prize All Lives</itunes:title>

Prize All Lives

Love Those Over You

Discussion Guide for Exodus 20:12

<itunes:author>Jason Kriaski</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Exodus 20:12</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>God promises to bless us when we honor the people he has placed over us. Honoring our parents looks different depending on your age, and your relationship with your parents. Children are called to obey, teenagers to submit, and adults to listen. But if your parents aren’t in a healthy place spiritually or emotionally or relationally, you can honor your parents by grieving and forgiving. But the only way we can truly honor our parents, and our only true motivation, is knowing that our Father God has adopted us in Christ and given us his Spirit. God built the seven-day cycle of work and rest into the fabric of creation, and Hebrews 4 even describes the new heavens and new earth as a “Sabbath rest” for the people of God. But even though it invites us to enjoy a full day of rest and worship – which we know our souls desperately need – our culture, and our hearts, steadfastly resists. Thankfully, the person and work of Jesus, the “Lord of the Sabbath,” meets pitiful sabbath-breakers like us in our failure, gives us abundant mercy, and fuels us with fresh resources to grow in Sabbath faithfulness. As he does, our lives grow more godly, more peaceful, and more useful to others.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Share His Rest</itunes:title>

Share His Rest

Hallow His Name

Discussion Guide for Exodus 20:7

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Exodus 20:7</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>The third commandment is not about coarse or indelicate speech. It focuses on the name of the LORD God, and therefore also, the name of Jesus Christ and the name of the Holy Spirit. Because there is only one true God (#1), and because his character should not be shrunk by using images in worship (#2), it is all the more important for us to speak his name expansively – to “hallow” it, or treat it as holy. There are at least three main ways we tend to break this commandment today – each of which counterfeits an appropriate way of using God’s name.
a)	logorrhea: thoughtlessly using God’s name without considering his person at all
b)	misappropriation: using God’s name to add weight to our own words
c)	circumlocution: attempting to add weight to our words by implying, but not actually saying, God’s name
Failing to honor God’s name in practice ultimately has the same effect as worshiping with images: it shrinks his character in our own hearts, and also in the eyes of others. Sincerely hallowing his name, however, cultivates humility, wonder, attentiveness, and trust – first in ourselves, and then in others. </itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Hallow His Name</itunes:title>

Hallow His Name

Don't Shrink God

Discussion Guide for Exodus 2:4-6

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Exodus 20:4-6</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>If the first commandment is about whom we worship (the one and only true God), the second commandment is about how we worship: We should not worship with images, especially not of God himself. The Israelites at Sinai broke this commandment immediately by worshiping the LORD in the form of a golden calf. The problem with images is not artistic skill – which God specifically empowered and commissioned them to use in creating the temple – but the effect that they have on our view of God. Inevitably, worshiping an image of God shrinks God’s expansive greatness into a smaller, more controllable, or more simplistic package. And when we break the second commandment, it eventually becomes much easier to break the first. This is why God includes a reminder of his holy jealousy and the long-term consequences of how we respond to him. Consistent with his gracious character in Christ, though, these positive consequences are dramatically longer-lasting than the negative ones.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Don't Shrink God</itunes:title>

Don't Shrink God

The One and Only

Discussion Guide for Exodus 20:1-17

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Exodus 20:1-17</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>The Ten Commandments are a picture of the Good Life under the reign of God’s grace, and the first commandment lays the foundation for all others: Personal, intimate, exclusive worship of God alone. The Good News of Jesus exposes the empty promises of our idols and calls us to cling to God’s better promises. This is not only why every Christian needs a church, but why every local community needs the influence of a church’s members. A critical mass of Christians living their faith has the power to transform whole societies. At Westside, we think this transformation is most effective when we live, work, worship and serve together as closely as possible.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Disruptive Place</itunes:title>

Disruptive Place

Costly Compassion

Discussion Guide for Luke 10:25-37

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Luke 10:25-37</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>On the most straightforward level, Jesus’ famous parable of the Good Samaritan challenges all Christians to perform costly acts of compassion toward people in need – including a very practical example for how to “go and do likewise.” We forget, however, that Jesus told the parable in response to a specific question from a specific person: An expert in religious law was seeking to justify himself by limiting which “neighbors” God required him to love. But by erasing all boundaries on the Second Great Commandment, Jesus’ parable drove him (and us) back to the Greatest Commandment. Only loving God with everything we have will enable us to have compassion for our neighbors in need. Ironically, what might seem like “advanced” Christianity, whether in the form of ecstatic speech or theological jargon, is actually childish to practice in gathered worship. Not only does it confuse those God wants us to bless, but it enables us to hide from God behind God-talk. Like everything else in the Christian life, the practice of praise originates with the good news of God’s love for us in Jesus. When we understand and believe the Gospel, we can’t help but sing thankful praise. Our praise is one of the key ways we experience the peace of Christ that unites us in peace with each other. It is also one of the key ways we practice “teaching and admonishing” one another – by singing biblical content, centered on the Word of Christ, applied “with all wisdom” to the various situations of our lives.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Transforming Praise</itunes:title>

Transforming Praise

Forgiven Much

Discussion Guide for Luke 7:36-50

<itunes:author>Chris Talley</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Luke 7:36-50</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>Associate pastor Chris Talley preached this sermon on Luke 7:36-50, where Jesus is invited to the home of a Pharisee and encounters an unexpected intrusion.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Forgiven Much</itunes:title>

Forgiven Much

Chasing Pleasure

Discussion Guide for Ecclesiastes 2:1-11, 24-26

<itunes:author>Michael Phillips</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Ecclesiastes 2:1-11, 24-26</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>Rev. [Walter will elaborate on this point next week] Jesus is the only human being who has lived perfectly in all three relationships, but through his Holy Spirit, those who trust him by faith are being progressively restored to our original design in all three ways. </itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Defined</itunes:title>

Defined

Maker Made: Designed

Discussion Guide for Genesis 1:1 - 2:3

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Maker Made</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>The first three chapters of the Bible are not primarily concerned with how God created all things, but why. In particular, the seven-day sequence in 1:1 – 2:3 is designed to orient us to the most important realities about God, ourselves, and our world. God, we learn, is an artistic architect who is supremely able to bring the universe into being with a word. His speaking is not only an act of creative power but an extension of his own inter-Trinitarian conversation, through which he reveals himself to us and draws us into his plans. Ultimately, it is Jesus the Word of God, present as part of the Trinity at creation and active throughout the history of redemption, who speaks to us and graciously draws us into the healing and redemption of the world.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>Maker Made: Designed</itunes:title>

Maker Made: Designed

The Spirit of the Fruit

Discussion Guide for Romans 8:5-14

<itunes:author>Claude Ball</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Romans 8:5-14</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>Pastoral Intern Claude Ball completes our Fruit of the Spirit sermon series with this examination of the person and work of the Holy Spirit.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>The Spirit of the Fruit</itunes:title>

The Spirit of the Fruit

The Fruit of Self-Control

Discussion Guide for 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>1 Corinthians 9:24-27</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>In this passage Paul is not talking about salvation, which is a gift of pure grace, but about eternal rewards, which are a grace upon grace. The Holy Spirit empowers Christians to actively participate in God’s transformation of our lives. Self-control, then, is not primarily about self-denial, but about guiding our desires to want the things that last forever. We guide our desires here in two ways: 1) by aiming them toward the Lord (or re-aiming them through faith and repentance) and 2) by taming them, mentally and physically. Ultimately, self-control characterizes all the fruit of the Spirit, helping us grow a holy and beautiful life.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>The Fruit of Self-Control</itunes:title>

The Fruit of Self-Control

The Fruit of Gentleness

Gentleness is not needing to force our way in life. All four interlock and reinforce each other, but peace as a fruit of the Spirit is primarily about the fourth level: peace in our relationships. When the Gospel of God’s grace is working in our hearts, the Spirit bears peace that includes gracious speech about other people, a habit of empathizing with both sufferers and victors, a humble-self-understanding shaped by actively associating with humble people, and a forward-thinking attunement to the likely consequences of our actions. Jesus’ farewell discourse with his disciples made this connection explicit: when he was captured and crucified they would weep, but when he was resurrected, they would rejoice. Even after Jesus’ ascension, they continued to experience this joy through the indwelling presence of his Holy Spirit. Because Christians today share that same Spirit, we too possess a joy that “no one will take away” (v. 22). What this joy feels like in our experience, however, is far more complex than a simple positive emotion. Joy above all “sees” or communes with Jesus – but it also bleeds, dreams, and feasts.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:image href="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a4e9a741f318d07aef572ce/t/5a78e4a60852295e8ef7b1d2/1517872295350/1500w/unnamed_1400.jpg"/><itunes:title>The Fruit of Joy</itunes:title>

The Fruit of Joy

The Fruit of Love

Discussion Guide for 1 John 3:11-18

<itunes:author>Walter Henegar</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>1 John 3:11-18</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>Love is not just a feeling; it does something. Just as God’s Spirit led the Israelites in the wilderness, he leads Christians today from slavery to the works of the flesh into the freedom of the fruit of the Spirit. The nine fruits Paul lists in v. 22-23 cannot be isolated, but rather, they overlap and interlock with one another as a single “fruit.” Just as we received the Spirit by grace, we cannot earn the fruit of the Spirit by working at them as a to-do list. Rather, we use the ordinary means of grace (scripture, prayer, sacraments, and fellowship) to draw near to the person of God. With the walls rebuilt, and the city more secure, the consistent gathering of God's people in the Temple for worship was now possible. In the previous chapter, Walter showed us the power of God's Word, both read and explained to the people, moved them to worship God, to praise him and also to apprehend a sense their own weakness and need and confess their sins. Here in Chapter 10, Nehemiah shows how God binds his people together through his holy covenant; quilting them into the beautiful patchwork of His redeeming love. The particular way they do it here has been used to shape several historic patterns of worship, including: intergenerational worship (v. 2-3); reading from a raised platform/pulpit (v. 4); elevating the physical book of scripture and standing as it is read (v. 5); responding with "Amen," raising hands and bowing heads (v. 6); and providing authoritative interpreters to help people to understand what they heard (v. 7-9). This kind of attention to God's Word should not just transfer information but also stir deep emotion, especially sorrow over our sin and weaknesses (v. 9). Wise believers know that the enemies of our soul do not rest with our victories, and so they take steps to guard against being compromised in the future. At the same time, they embrace their need for the Lord's ongoing help to live their dreams. All three were effectively temptations to make choices that would sabotage his calling. Christians today face similar attacks on the many callings God has given us. The common tactic in all of them is fear, which threatens to take away the things we are tempted to love more than God, like our comfort, our reputation, or our security. This is why we need Jesus' Gospel. Only if our God is a sufferer will we keep plodding through the pain of life. Only if our King has been crucified in our place will we resist trying to become our own king.
