The aboriginal ‘Tent Embassy‘ directly opposite Parliament House in Canberra is an interesting and vibrant place, where Australian Police are not even allowed to enter, nor stand on a piece of their land, unless given permission by the elders. I happened to be in Canberra for a climate action summit, and spent two days at the ‘tent embassy’ with the elders who took a liking to me. The police crossed the line onto aboriginal soil that day and I captured a rare piece of footage, the filming insisted by the elders and leaders of their ‘tent embassy’.

Forest Whitaker has a number of films he plans to direct, one of particular interest is 'Better Angel's'. Better Angels is a film close to Whitaker's heart and focuses on the child soldiers of Northern Uganda. In 2007 Whitaker won an academy award for his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the 2006 film The Last King of Scotland.

Pre-production for his film is expected to begin in April of this year, and Child Troopers director Ebony Butler, is hoping to be involved with the making of the film.

Better Angels, although a fiction film, has many similarities with our documentary Child Troopers. Both have common themes based on events and situations that arose from the LRA conflict, that has seen over 30,000 children abducted and forced to become child soldiers.

Angelina Jolie Attends Historic Warlord Trial at the ICC

Angelina Jolie witnessed history in the making on Thursday when she attended a trial at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.

The "Changeling" actress headed to the hearing in The Hague to observe proceedings as the case against Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga, who is accused of recruiting child soldiers, wrapped up.

She tells the Associated Press, "(This is) an extraordinary moment for international justice but more than that for children of the world."

Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, is currently living in Scotland while her partner Brad Pitt films zombie movie "World War Z."

Child Troopers in Production in New York

Child Troopers director Ebony Butler has taken her human rights documentary project to the United States of America, where she has found a whole new host of supporters and interested parties.

Ebony is currently working from Hollywood Los Angeles with her local crew where she is working on Child Troopers second phase of production. She is also being mentored by some leading industry players. The impressive list of international film and TV professionals she has mustered include Shine Global CEO Mark Fennessy and Australian born, LA based director Rod Hardy. Ebony’s has 5 official mentors who have each signed on as industry specific advisors to the young director for her debut feature documentary film Child Troopers, slated for release in 2012.

As of next week Ebony will leave Los Angeles for New York and Washington DC where she has scheduled in meetings and on camera interviews with some of the world’s leading humanitarian organizations, NGO‘S, political figures and other child soldier and human rights lobby groups. The line up includes: the United Nations, Human Rights Watch,Amnesty International, OXFAM and Resolve (formerly known as Resolve Uganda). There are a number of other key players, analysts and experts in the arena of international and African politics, American foreign policy and geopolitics set to meet with Ebony over the next month to discuss her film and offer unique insights into the conflict in Uganda and beyond.

Ebony has finally made it the the United States of America, to continue working on her feature documentary film Child Troopers which is slated for release in 2012.

Ebony has spent the first few days in Malibu, California, where she has been hosted by friends John O'Shei and Christopher Veitor, supporters of her work and Child Troopers the documentary in particular.

Ebony has met with our LA based crew members including producer Alec Pedersen, Todd Spradlin and Trampas Thompson and is set to start serious work this week when she moves from Malibu to downtown Hollywood. They will be working on the film and most importantly setting up meeting around the country, particularly the vital interviews with those at the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Columbia University.

One year ago today, President Obama signed into law a bill that committed to put an end to the LRA's brutal atrocities and abductions.

President Obama stated that: "[This] legislation crystallizes the commitment of the United States to help bring an end to the brutality and destruction that have been a hallmark of the LRA across several countries for two decades."

Today, LRA attacks continue and activists are urging the President to robustly implement his LRA strategy (See: Resolve).

In Congo today, LRA atrocities are still occurring, on a near-daily basis. Resolve's on the ground partner, Fr. Benoit Kinalegu stated:

"Many of us believed that President Obama's commitment to addressing the LRA threat would finally help stop our suffering. Yet one year later, we continue to live in fear as the LRA's attacks have shown no signs of decreasing." As for the geographic concentration in Africa, there's little surprise to be found there: a lot of fake states being remapped by globalization's advance, and when that happens, straight lines (drawn by colonialists) are made squiggly again through force/"ethnic cleansing"/etc. And with local governments either being too weak to stop the violence or perpetrating it themselves, we see the ICC step in - time and again - to do for Africa what Africa is yet unable to do for itself. Icon's Project Nim sales include Le Pacte for France

Icon Entertainment International has done a raft of deals on James Marsh’s Sundance hit documentary Project Nim.

Le Pacte have taken all rights for France and Sacher Distribuzione and Feltrinelli Editore have taken all rights for Italy. Other deals include Mongrel for Canada, Against Gravity for Poland, Lusomundo for Portugal, Odeon for Greece and Prime Pictures for the Middle East.

After the Sundance premiere, HBO and Roadside Attractions took US rights.

Icon will distribute the film in the UK, Ireland and Australia and New Zealand.

Project Nim is about a chimpanzee who was nurtured like a human child in a 1970s experiment.

The film screens again here in Cannes Market on Sunday.
