Paris BNP Paribas Masters Sunday 8 November: As it happened

Sunday saw the beginning of the main draw, with James Blake defeating Fabrice Santoro - the Frenchman now heading into retirement - and Benjamin Becker coming from behind to defeat Michael Llodra. Relive all the action from the first round and the final qualifiers right here.

Right, that's it from me. See you back here tomorrow at 11 am for the start of the day's action. Always a pleasure, never a chore...

6.29: Becker is through to the second round, 3-6 6-2 6-3. A fine comeback from the pint-sized German. We also have tomorrow’s order of play, featuring Marat at 7.45 pm in the opener of the night session.

6.16: The Lilley curse is alive and well. Second serve from Llodra, a weak one, Becker fires it back at his feet and suddenly it’s 4-2 to the German. He’s eight points from the second round.

6.09: 2-2 in the decider. Llodra’s back in with a shout, his service is working again.

5.54: Another break and Becker has the second set in his pocket, 6-2. Llodra changes his light blue shirt for a bright red one but the German is the one with the wind in his sails.

5.48: 5-2 Becker, who lobbed Llodra mid-game and won the point when the Parisian’s hotdog (back to the net, between the legs à la Federer) found the net.

5.44: Break point. Llodra serves and comes into the net but Becker keeps his cool and passes him. 4-2 to the diminutive Teuton.

5.30: Llodra serves up his second double fault of the match and it’s back to deuce on the Parisian’s service. A big serve and an even bigger second serve come to his aid though and it’s 1-1. Murray has just won in Valencia by the way and it looks like Djokovic is going to beat Federer in his own back yard of Basle.

5.20: Llodra takes the first set 6-3. Big serving and good volleying from the attacking leftie from just down the road. He’s a set away from a second round meeting with Nikolay Davydenko, who is No6 seed in the absence of Andy Roddick. Blake meanwhile will face Andy Murray, No4 seed.

5.05: Llodra leads Becker 4-1 already, but here’s the news you’ve all been waiting for: Remy the ref has just popped into the office and given us the main draw. Safin – Ascione, Isner – Falla, Beck – Kubot, Wawrinka – Guez, Almagro – Chiudinelli, Berdych – Millot, Lopez – Clément and Becker – Llodra are where the qualifiers (and the special exempt) have ended up.

4.59: Clément is through – Stakhovsky’s knee suddenly buckled underneath him and that was that. Sergei was No1 seed as well. That’s the top four seeds out in fact as Gicquel, Gil and Serra all lost today.

4.27: Better news for the Frenchies as La Clé gets back on serve at 5-5.

4.19: Santoro bids a fond farewell to the crowd and throws his racquets into the crowd, then the sweatbands and even his trainers. The DJ plays a song by David and Jonathan, French popsters from the 80s who are friends of Fab’s, and off he goes, into the sunset. Adieu Fab. But we’ll see you around I’m sure, so it’s merely a case of “à demain”…

4.15: It is finished. Blake wins 6-4 6-3. Blake and Santoro exchange a warm embrace and swap jerseys at the end, with the crowd on their feet. Blake takes the mic and pays tribute to Fab’s career.

4.09: Santoro is serving at 3-4 and a set down and looking like a man at the end of his career. He keeps moving Blake around but then hitting the ball right back at him. He tries a Hawk-Eye, which is on Centre and No1 court this year, but the electronic eye in the sky is having none of it. 30-40, and Fab double-faults. Aïe aïe aïe, as they say here. 5-3, Blake to serve to send Santoro into retirement. The crowd get behind Fab as best they can. One last show of resistance, Fab. Come on…

4.01: Kubot is through, 6-3 2-6 6-3. If he plays Djokovic or Nadal at any point we could be here all day and they’ll have to change balls every three games, the amount of bouncing those two get through.

3.56: Stakhovsky, who won the St Petersburg tournament earlier this year, has broken Clément to open their match. Santoro – Blake is 2-2 in the second, while Kubot is serving at 5-3 in the decider and has just come back from 0-30 and 30-40 to deuce.

3.36: Four games in a row and Blake takes the first set 6-4. The American plays the angles better and breaks to 30. Is Battling Fab six games away from retirement? He’s just published his memoirs, entitled “A deux mains” – meaning two-handed but pronounced the same way as “A demain”, meaning see you tomorrow.

3.30: Blake-back mountain. James carves out three opportunities and takes the second. 4-4. And on No1 court, lanky Colombian leftie Falla defeats Gicquel 6-3 5-7 7-6 (6), overcoming a mini-break in the decider. La Gicque was not a happy man, bouncing a ball off the roof and pinging his racquet (first pingage of the tournament) on match point.

3.18: 3-2 Santoro! Blake saves a couple of break points but Fab paints the lines and sneaks ahead. The crowd love it. 6-5 la Gicque and he’s 0-15 up, Serra leads 4-2.

3.12: 2-2. Blake battles to deuce but Fab pulls a few good ‘uns out of the bag to level matters. Falla to serve to stay in the tournament, while Serra has another break point… and he takes it! 3-2 to the Frenchie over Kubot, but the powerful Pole took the first set of course.

3.00: Blake serves and holds to love. No messing. The crowd get behind Fab for his first service game. Gicquel leads 4-3 with serve in the decider, Kubot takes the opening set 6-3 then saves three break points with Serra bidding to make it 2-0 in the second to keep France’s perfect run going in the qualifiers.

2.47: La Gicque, as we call him, breaks back, Kubot is still a break up and here come the gladiators out into the main arena – James Blake, followed by Battling Fab, The Magician, Fabrice Santoro!

2.38: Air guitar world champion Günther Löw is currently wowing the crowd on Centre Court. I kid you not. He’s wearing a gold lamé suit. Wimbledon, this is not. Bercy’s all about the show.

2.36: The slow-serving Lukasz Kubot is a break up at 3-2 over Florent Serra, while Falla is a break up on Gicquel in the decider.

2.26: 15-40, second serve, and there you have it: Gicquel breaks and is back level at one set all. There's nothing like a break in the 12th game to take a set.

2.09: Del Potro pulling out, I’m asked down below? Not as far as we know – the ref’s office hasn’t heard anything to that effect.

2.04: Ascione cruises through against Rodrigues, 2 and 1. Falla meanwhile took the opener from Gicquel 6-3, and it’s 1-2 there on serve in the second. Can Gicquel fight back and make it four Frenchies out of four so far.

1.22: Ascione leads 4-2, Falla versus Gicquel has just started.

1.04: He’s through! Millot defeats Navarro 6-4 3-6 6-2, breaking to 15 to win, as if an exclamation mark were needed! He’s another debutant in the main draw of a Masters 1000. Absolutely Frenchtastic. Thierry Ascione meanwhile leads the Gallic derby 2-0 on Court No2 against Mathieu Rodrigues, who played 15 minutes against the ball-kids yesterday then packed up his racquet bag after Ernests Gulbis failed to turn up (as you do when it’s the final Masters 1000 of the season).

12.59: Millot breaks then holds! Hoo cha cha! The well built southpaw is four points from the main draw…

12.45: 26-year-old Guez is now in his first ever main draw of a Masters 1000 tournament.

12.45: First winner of the day and first incorrect prediction for me – David Guez defeats Ivan Navarro 6-3, 6-4.

12.30: Gil takes the second and Millot has to serve to open the third – a blessing or a curse? The pressure is on the chunky young leftie to hold… Guez meanwhile broke back in the crucial seventh game but is battling, deuces wild, in the eighth.

12.13: My prediction is hoving back into view – Gil and Navarro may be a set down but they’re now both 3-1 up in the second. Life in those ties yet…

11.58: Two French sets, two wrong picks for me (so absolutely nothing new there!) Guez takes the opener 6-3, Millot 6-4.

11.50: You know what I like most about the start of a tournament? Big players all sharing a warm-up on Centre Court for half-an-hour or so. Santoro and Karlovic are out there at the moment, looking relaxed. The two of them came to the net and were playing volleys à la Leconte-Bahrami in the exhibition matches until big Ivo aimed one right into Fabrice’s… ahem… shorts (hit him amidships or caught him right in the bread-basket is what they’d say back in the UK). Fab faked agony, doubled up, Ivo grinned in that languid way of his and said “Come on, react!”

Fab is smiling out there and gave me a nod when I took up position courtside, which was most polite of him, but you can tell that he knows how big today is. It could be his last ever appearance on the circuit.

11.39: Millot breaks in the oh-so-crucial seventh game - he's odds-on to win the set now.

11.32: One of my predictions is 25% up the swanee already. David Guez does the old hold-break-hold to serve up a semi-bagel for Ivan Navarro’s Sunday brunch. Tasty.

11.24: Millot the stocky little lefty built like a rugby prop forward breaks! Gil breaks back! It’s all happening here!

11.20: Players warming up on both courts. Haven’t seen Rémy the tournament ref yet today so don’t know whether he’s had any news from the Gulbis camp regarding yesterday’s no-show. Will let you know once I hear something.

My winners for the day: Gil, Navarro, Gicquel, Ascione, Clément (though I’m not sure), Serra and… Santoro and Llodra. Allez les Bleus, I say! Mind you Blake is one heck of an indoor player when he’s on form. Becker's been on lousy form though ever since Wimbledon (mind you, so have I...)

11.00: Good morning one and all, Drew Lilley here ready to take you through the Sunday start. The matches are just getting under way with Vincent Millot and David Guez looking to get through to the main draw and Frederico Gil and Ivan Navarro looking to stop them. After that we have the likes of Marc Gicquel, Thierry Ascione and Arnaud Clément in the qualifiers and then the beginning of the main draw: James Blake versus Fabrice Santoro followed by Michael Llodra versus Benjamin Becker.

Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer to win Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel title

Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to win the Davidoff Swiss Indoors title in Basel .

The first set went with serve, until Federer was broken for the first time in the tournament to trail 5-4. Then came that tense where Djokovic saved five break points in a game that lasted 24 minutes and featured 11 deuces.

“It was maybe the turning point in the whole match,” Djokovic said. “I was fortunate to keep my nerves.”

Federer dropped serve again to open the second set, sending another forehand into the net. But he won his next service game, then broke his opponent for the first time when a drop shot grazed the net cord before falling in play. The world number 1 took the second set but Djokovic raced to a 4-0 lead in the decider.

Trailing 4-1, Federer held three break points at 0-40 but was let down again by his groundstrokes as Djokovic reeled off five straight points. Djokovic needed just one match point to clinch, as Federer mistimed a backhand from the baseline.

Djokovic earned his fourth tournament and improved to 3-2 this year against Federer, and said the top-ranked Swiss pushed him to his limits.

“I have to produce something special to win,” Djokovic said.

"Today, I played by far my best match of this tournament. It came at the right time,” he added.

Andy Murray beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-2 to win the Valencia Open title.

Murray was able to dictate the rhythm of the match. Using his sliced backhand to excellent effect, he broke Youzhny to love to take a 3-1 lead and served for the opening set at 5-1 before the Russian hit back with a break of his own.

Some accurate serving gave Murray three set points two games later and he converted the second with his sixth ace. The second set was more of the same, with Murray controlling the pace with ease and Youzhny committing far too many unforced errors.

Andy went 4-0 ahead with two more breaks of serve and sealed victory with an eighth ace after one hour eight minutes of play.

“I expected a difficult match as he has been playing well recently but I served well and played smart and I’m happy to have won in two sets,” Murray said.

He also said his back and groin were feeling a bit stiff.

“My body is hurting but the whole week was great as I haven’t played in a long time,” he added.

Blake beats Santoro in Paris BNP Paribas Masters

James Blake defeated Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the Paris BNP Paribas Masters.

Blake broke Santoro’s serve twice in each set and will next face Andy Murray.

The American won 62 per cent of service points, hit three aces and saved four of six break point opportunities.

This was Santoro's final singkes match at the ATP men's tennis tour and swapped jerseys with Blake after the match.
He then took a lap around the court to warm applause from the crowd at Bercy indoor arena.

Fabrice Santoro will partner compatriot Sebastien Grosjean in the doubles competition later this week.

Andy Murray vs Mikhail Youznhy in Valencia Open final

Andy Murray defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 while Mikhail Youzhny upset Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the Valencia Open final.

Murray struggled with his serve but took advantage of Verdasco’s service game to break for 4-3 in the first set and hold on.

The Spaniard started the second set with a break in the first game, and evened the set score when Murray double-faulted. In the deciding set, Murray made the decisive break for 4-2 against the Spaniard and advanced to his seventh final of the season.

“I managed to stay strong because he hit some really big winners, and put some pressure on me,” said Murray.

Nikolay Davydenko led Youzhny by a set and 4-4 but lost the next two games to be forced into a third set.

Youzhny then broke Davydenko’s first two service games and never looked back.

"It was a close game, actually," assessed Youzhny. "In the second set I broke him then lost my serve. At 4-4 I played a good game and I broke him at 5-4. The next four games he was a little bit tired and I played really well.”

Eeven he lost Davydenko is confident he will still qualify during the Paris Masters next week.

"I have a chance of going to London because if you see some results behind me, Soderling, Tsonga and Gonzalez need to win Paris Bercy. If someone only reaches the final, I’m in. No. 7 or No. 8, it doesn't matter."

Murray will go for his fifth title of the season and Youzhny has made his third final in his last four tournaments so both players will be in top form on Sunday, it should be a very interesting meeting.

"I needed to play better than I did in the earlier rounds to win and I managed to do that," Murray said. "I’m very happy to be in a final after coming off a long break and I’ll try to recover and do well tomorrow. Youzhny played well against Davydenko. He’s been on a good run at the end of the year after not starting so well. He’ll be back in the Top 20 after this week so I’ll obviously have to play well to beat him."

Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic in Basel Davidoff Swiss Indoors Final

Roger Federer defeated Marco Chiudinelli 7-6 6-3 to reach the final against of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors. The world number 1 will play against Novak Djokovic, who saved three match points to beat Radek Stepanek 6-7 7-5 6-2.

Chiudinelli had a set point in a first-set tiebreaker. But Federer struck a backhand crosscourt winner as his opponent advanced to the net, then took the next two points. Federer broke serve early in the second set and quickly closed the match.

Chiudinelli is having a great 2009 season. A year ago he was ranked 884th in the ATP Tour ranking and now he has reached his first semifinaland earned a place in the main draw of the Paris Masters plus he is close to get into the top 50 in the rankings.

“It was a very unusual match for me, playing such a close friend and someone I grew up with," said Federer. "Since [we were] eight-years-old we’ve spent so much time together, it’s kind of awkward going on court and playing someone like this. The performance was secondary; it was more the pleasure (of playing Chiudinelli) that counts for me. Of course, I’m happy I won today. It was a great match, I thought."

Djokovic trailed Stepanek 5-4 in the second set and was 0-40 down before reeling off five straight points to win the game.

“I wouldn’t say necessarily it was my good shots that prevented the loss. It was luck only,” Djokovic said. “I just tried to get some first serves in and at least get that advantage. On this (hard-court) surface, it’s crucial.”

“Like yesterday (against Stanislas Wawrinka), I wasn’t the better player on the court,” confessed Djokovic. “My opponent today was playing quite good tennis and I still wasn’t managing to find my rhythm in some returns. But, yet again, I found a way through and won another match, which is definitely a big success for me, reaching another final. I’ll be motivated tomorrow and hoping that I can get another title.”

Reflecting on the match points he saved, Djokovic said: "I just tried to focus on the next point. I tried to get some serves in and go for my shots. I didn’t think about the pressure of losing and, luckily for me, it worked."

Djokovic’s first serves faltered in the second set, and a double-fault gave Stepanek three match points. Djokovic responded with heavy serves and ground strokes, and needed just one set point on his next service game. He converted it with a forehand winner. In the deciding set, Djokovic broke in the first and seventh games.

About the final against Federer, Djokovic said: “Obviously, the home crowd will be behind him." while Federer commented: “I’m ready for a tough match. Novak’s played solid tennis during the week."

“He’s come through some tough ones against Wawrinka and against Stepanek today," said Federer. "He showed some grit and I’m sure he’s going to try to do that again tomorrow. I hope I get off to a good start. I’ve been playing well this week, I haven’t been broken yet. I hope I can keep that run going and to get my fourth title here in Basel would be a real dream again.”

Andy Roddick withdraws from Paris Masters

Andy Roddick has withdrawn from the Paris Masters tournament due to a knee injury that forced him to retire from the Shanghai Masters last month.

He did not feature in the draw for the Paris tournament made on Friday.

Roddick has already booked a place in the World Tour Finals in London from Nov. 22 to 29 and everyone is hoping that he can get 100% fit for this amazing tennis event where the best 8 players in the world will be competing.

Roger Federer into Basel's semifinals

Roger Federer reached the semifinals of Davidoff Swiss Indoors in Basel after scoring a 6-3, 6-2 win against Evgeny Korolev.

Federer will play against compatriot Marco Chiudinelli, a childhood friend, who beat Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-3.

“It’s amazing to play Marco,” Federer said. “I’ve never played a really good friend on the tour. I’m looking forward to it.”

Federer, aiming for a fourth successive title in his hometown tournament, broke serve twice in each set against the world number 58, who was never really in the match.

Novak Djokovic was made it to the semifinals. The Serb battle past Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6 7-6 6-2 and he will meet Radek Stepanek for a place in the final.

Richard Gasquet faces cocaine-kiss hearing next week

Richard Gasquet's cocaine-kiss is not over yet.

The Frenchman will go before the highest court in sports next week for what he says was a cocaine-tainted kiss in a nightclub.

In March before playing at the Master Series event in Miami, Gasquet failed a drug test and was suspended. The World Anti-Doping Agency and International Tennis Federation have asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland to ban him for one to two years.
Richard's defend was that his positive test resulted from a kiss he gave a woman.

An independent tribunal called by the ITF ruled he was not to blame. He was cleared to play again after serving just 2 1/2 months. A verdict by the top sports court is expected before the end of the year.
