The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings was carrying out his post-match media duties Sunday after claiming the Mutua Madrid Open title when a journalist pointed out that it was Mother’s Day in Spain. Asked what his mother, Siglinde, has represented in his life, Sinner spoke at length about the early sacrifices made by her and his father, Hanspeter, in service of his tennis career.

“I consider myself very lucky. Lucky because, when I was 13, I made a choice to leave home and to go to a centre to practise,” Sinner said. “I think this for parents is very difficult, especially for a mother, to accept that in a way, to just go and leave home. I think it was tough for me, but it was for sure more tough for my parents because they also would like to see the kid growing up.”

While Sinner is currently enjoying historic success on the ATP Tour — on Sunday in Madrid he became the first player to win five consecutive Masters 1000 events — the 24-year-old recognises some of the difficult choices he has had to make in order to chase his tennis dreams.

“It's definitely a little bit [like] I missed out a little bit of time, spending time with my parents. I would like to catch up as much as I can,” the 28-time tour-level champion said. “Obviously at home, grandma and grandpa, the parents of my mum, they're still both alive. I understand her very much that she wants to stay at home and spend as much time as possible with them. But I also would like to have more time with family.”

While it is not uncommon to see family members of ATP Tour stars at tournaments, the global nature of the tennis circuit means a it is not always possible for loved ones to be a regular presence. Sinner nonetheless hopes to see more of his family, perhaps in a similar way to his great Lexus ATP Head2Head rival Carlos Alcaraz, who frequently travels with his parents and his older brother Alvaro.

“It's great to see Carlos, for example, travelling with family and his brother, and I think he's doing very well,” Sinner said. “Because when somebody is not there anymore, then you regret it. So hopefully I can have some more time with my parents and the people I love, and also with my brother and friends. Because things can change.

“[My mother] is definitely a role model, and I'm very happy to have my mum, and very happy to have my dad, and they are a true inspiration for me. I just try to be a little bit like them, because then I know that I'm a good person.”

ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi meets Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia main draw kicks off Wednesday in Rome. But the tennis festivities have already begun in The Eternal City.

ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi was part of a group that on Monday visited the Quirinale, the official residence of Sergio Mattarella, the President of Italy.

Gaudenzi had an opportunity to speak with Mattarella alongside Italian Tennis and Padel Federation President Angelo Binaghi.

The draw for the season’s fifth ATP Masters 1000 event also took place Monday, at the historic Piazza del Popolo. Italian Jannik Sinner, the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, headlines the field. Sinner will try to become just the second player to complete the Career Golden Masters.

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia will take place at the Foro Italico through 17 May.

Arnaldi sparks revival with 'unreal' Cagliari Challenger triumph

Matteo Arnaldi’s triumph at the Sardegna Open on Sunday is one of the standout stories from the 2026 ATP Challenger season.

Weeks after sharing that he had endured “the toughest six months” of his career, citing a persistent right foot injury, the 25-year-old flipped the script in memorable fashion, claiming his biggest career title and first triumph at any level since June 2023.

The Italian downed former World No. 6 Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 6-4 in the clay-court final and will now head to his home ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome.

“It feels amazing, with how I started [the season], how the year was going, the problems I’ve had this year, it’s unreal to be here with the title,” Arnaldi told commentator Rob Werner. “Playing such a good player in the final and being able to come through, I’m super happy.”

Arnaldi, who reached a career-high No. 29 in 2024, arrived in Cagliari after a qualifying loss at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he was defending quarter-final points. Entering the Challenger 175 event on a four-match skid with a 2-8 season record across all levels, Arnaldi is proud of the level he produced this week.

“I don’t think I’ve realised yet what I did because I haven’t played that much. I literally started to play tennis again fully two weeks ago,” Arnaldi said. “So I wasn’t even expecting this. It’s so special. I’m so proud of it.

“I didn’t even know if I was going to come or not. After Madrid, I was debating and I wasn’t feeling okay. I wasn’t in the best mood. We just went home, tried to practise a few days and see how it would feel. It responded pretty well, so we were like, ‘Let’s try and go play as many matches as we can’. I’m really happy that I was able to get the win, first title in three years.”

IL CAMPIONE 🇮🇹🏆@mattearnalds claims the biggest title of his career at the Sardegna Open!#ATPChallenger | @federtennis pic.twitter.com/hBVTxcEpe8
— ATP Challenger (@ATPChallenger) May 3, 2026

The Sanremo native saved a match point in the quarter-finals against Nuno Borges, keeping his tournament alive with a narrow 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(3) victory after three hours. Even after playing three deciding-set matches in Cagliari, Arnaldi’s right foot withstood the physical demands of the week.

“It was feeling worse at the start, but then it got better. I’m actually surprised,” Arnaldi said. “Usually the past month, it has been the opposite. So that’s a very positive sign. I don’t have any expectations for Rome, I just want to recover and see how it’s going to feel in the next few days. But if it’s like this and I’m able to practise, I’m sure I will be able to get back to the level I want and I think I showed that this week.”

Tabilo wins second Aix-en-Provence crown
Chilean Alejandro Tabilo was crowned champion at the Open Aix Provence Crédit Agricole for the second time in three years. The 28-year-old, who previously won the French tournament in 2024, overcame Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the championship match.

After defeating four Top 100 players en route to the title, Tabilo became one of four players to have claimed multiple trophies at Challenger 175 level, alongside Ugo Humbert, Nuno Borges and Mariano Navone.

Alejandro Tabilo signs autographs moments after winning the Aix-en-Provence Challenger.

Tabilo is up eight places to No. 35 in the PIF ATP Rankings. His best result at ATP Tour level this year is a run to the Rio de Janeiro final.

Wong makes history; Safiullin among other Challenger champions
Coleman Wong entered the record books when he won the Jiangxi Open, becoming the first champion from Hong Kong in ATP Challenger history. The 21-year-old defeated Adam Walton 7-5, 7-6(4) in the final and is now at a career-high No. 110 in the PIF ATP Rankings.

Roman Safiullin won his second consecutive Challenger title after a marathon week at the Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE. Two weeks after winning the Oeiras Challenger as a qualifier, the 28-year-old needed a deciding set in four of his five matches in Mauthausen, where he survived Jaime Faria 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) in the final. Safiullin beat Faria in the Oeiras quarter-finals with a similar scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1).

Spaniard Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo lifted his first Challenger crown at the Ostra Group Open By Porsche Servisni Centrum Ostrava. The 27-year-old beat home hope Zdenek Kolar 6-4, 7-6(4) in the final.

Gauthier Onclin sealed back-to-back titles in Côte d'Ivoire, where he downed American Michael Mmoh 6-3, 6-4 in the final. The Belgian is at a career-high World No. 183. Onclin leaves Abidjan after winning 10 consecutive matches.

Onclin’s countryman Buvaysar Gadamauri was crowned champion at the Shymkent Challenger 2. A first-time Challenger champion, Gadamauri ousted India’s 18-year-old Manas Dhamne 7-6(6), 6-4 in the final.

Phew… what a week 😮‍💨#ATPChallenger pic.twitter.com/K0EPA1Xrb1
— ATP Challenger (@ATPChallenger) May 3, 2026

ATP + Palmes tap into tennis' cultural crossover with 2026 capsule

The ATP is continuing its move into the cultural and fashion space with the launch of its second collaborative capsule alongside Copenhagen-based label Palmes.

Jannik Sinner has the chance to make history on home soil at the Foro Italico, where main-draw play runs from 6 to 17 May: If the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings can lift the Rome title for the first time, he will complete the Career Golden Masters (winning all nine Masters 1000 events). However, the only man to have achieved that feat so far, Novak Djokovic, is among those in the field aiming to deny Sinner a sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title.

ATPTour.com looks at 10 things to watch during the 2026 Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

[ATP FANTASY]

1) Can Sinner complete the set?: Sinner on Sunday became the first player to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles by easing past Alexander Zverev to triumph at the Mutua Madrid Open. The 24-year-old Sinner has now won eight different Masters 1000 tournaments, with only Rome (where he reached the final in 2025) missing from his resume. If Sinner can go one step further at the Foro Italico this year, he will join Djokovic as the only player to complete the Career Golden Masters (Djokovic has won all nine events at least twice).

2) Djokovic returns: The 38-year-old Djokovic has not competed since Indian Wells in early March due to injury, but he will now return to action at an event where he is a six-time champion. Djokovic, who reached the final at January’s Australian Open and is 7-2 for the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, opens against Marton Fucsovics or a qualifier. He is in the same half of the draw as second seed Alexander Zverev.

3) Zverev eyes fast response: Zverev has been a consistent performer throughout 2026 so far, but the German was disappointed after playing what he described as an ‘awful tennis match’ in Sunday’s Madrid final. Zverev certainly has plenty of fond memories to feed off in Rome, where he won the first of his seven Masters 1000 crowns in 2017 and also triumphed in 2024.

4) Former titlist Medvedev: The third and final former champion (after Zverev and Djokovic) in the Rome draw this year is Daniil Medvedev. The man who once proclaimed himself a ‘hard-court specialist’ sprung a surprise to lift the trophy at the Foro Italico in 2023, and he arrives having already won ATP Tour crowns in Brisbane and Dubai in 2026.

5) Italians seek to end title wait: Sinner will spearhead the charge for a first Italian men’s singles champion in Rome since Adriano Panatta in 1976, but there are plenty of other local hopes also hoping to forge success on home soil. Among them are Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli and Luciano Darderi, who join Sinner as seeded players in the draw

[ATP APP]

6) In-form Fils: The 15th-seeded Arthur Fils is 9-1 on clay so far this year. Despite his defeat to Sinner in the Madrid semi-finals, the 21-year-old Frenchman heads to Rome as one of the form players on Tour. The Barcelona titlist, who is fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, could face a Lexus ATP Head2Head rematch with Sinner in the fourth round.

7) Demon vs. Jodar, Part II?: Alex de Minaur will seek an immediate response to his Madrid opening-round defeat to Rafael Jodar, and the Australian may have the chance to earn swift revenge against the #NextGenATP star again in Rome, where the pair is seeded to meet in the third round: Before then, De Minaur must overcome Matteo Arnaldi or Jaume Munar, while Jodar faces Nuno Borges or a qualifier.

8) Shelton seeks to emulate American greats: No American man has lifted the trophy on the Rome clay since Andre Agassi in 2002. Ben Shelton will be at the forefront of trying to set that record straight this year, when he competes as the fifth seed. Shelton, who won the biggest clay title of his career in Munich last month, is bidding to join ATP No. 1 Club members Agassi, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier as the only American Rome champions in the ATP Tour era (since 1990).

9) Fonseca chases first Rome win: Jodar’s fellow 19-year-old Joao Fonseca will also compete as a seed in the Italian capital. The World No. 29 is chasing his first match win at the second attempt at the Foro Italico and he could take on another former Next Gen ATP Finals champion, Hamad Medjedovic, in his opening match (the Serbian meets Valentin Royer first).

10) Arevalo/Pavic Defend Crown: Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic have made a solid start to 2026 but the pair arrives in Rome yet to lift a trophy this season. The 2025 champions' rivals in the draw include the in-form Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten, who triumphed in Madrid and are in first place in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

Sinner learns Rome path, Zverev & returning Djokovic in same half of draw

Jannik Sinner could face a couple of intriguing early rematches in his bid to complete the Career Golden Masters on home soil at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.

The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, who is chasing a record-extending sixth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 crown, begins his latest title tilt against Alex Michelsen or Sebastian Ofner. Sinner could face Jakub Mensik as early as the third round: The 26th-seeded Mensik is one of just two players to have defeated the Italian in 2026, having done so in the Doha quarter-finals in February.

View Rome Draw

If Sinner reaches the fourth round, he is seeded to meet Arthur Fils. Sinner was a comfortable straight-sets winner against Fils last Friday in the semi-finals at the Mutua Madrid Open, but he will nonetheless be wary of the in-form Frenchman, who is fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. Currently 30-2 for the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Sinner is aiming to become the second man after Novak Djokovic to triumph at all nine Masters 1000 events (Djokovic has won each event at least twice).

Top-10 stars Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev are also in Sinner’s half of the draw. The fourth-seeded Auger-Aliassime could face fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov first up, while #NextGenATP star Joao Fonseca is a potential third-round opponent. The fifth-seeded Shelton will open against a qualifier. Former World No. 1 Medvedev, who won his only clay title so far in Rome in 2023, faces a tough opening test against either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Tomas Machac.

In the bottom half of the draw, Djokovic will make his return after more than six weeks out due to injury. The six-time champion in the ‘Eternal City’ will start against Marton Fucsovics or a qualifier. Djokovic is in the same quarter as eighth seed and home favourite Lorenzo Musetti, as well as 11th seed Jiri Lehecka and 23rd seed Casper Ruud, who are seeded to meet in the third round.

[ATP FANTASY]

Second seed Alexander Zverev, who reached his first final of 2026 in Madrid before falling to Sinner, will aim to respond quickly to his heavy defeat in that match in the Spanish capital. Zverev, a two-time Rome titlist, plays his fellow German Daniel Altmaier or Zhang Zhizhen in his opener.

Sixth seed Alex de Minaur is a potential quarter-final opponent for Zverev, but the Australian will not be looking too far ahead in Rome. He will begin against home hope Matteo Arnaldi or Jaume Munar, and is then seeded to take on #NextGenATP star Rafael Jodar in the third round. That would be the pair's second Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting after their second-round clash in Madrid, where the 19-year-old Jodar marched to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Blockx’s fellow semi-finalist in the Spanish capital, Arthur Fils, has also continued his ascent after compiling another impressive run that was only ended by eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

ATPTour.com looks at the movers in the PIF ATP Rankings as of Monday, 4 May.

No. 36 Alexander Blockx, +33 (Career High)
The 21-year-old Belgian Blockx had not won an ATP Tour match on clay before April, but he has rocketed into the Top 40 of the PIF ATP Rankings after backing up his third-round appearance in Monte-Carlo with a run to the last four in Madrid. Blockx upset four seeded opponents, including World No. 5 Felix Auger-Aliassime and 2025 champion Casper Ruud, en route to his maiden tour-level semi-final.

No. 17 Arthur Fils, +8
Fils has made an immediate impact since returning in February after a long-term back injury, and the Frenchman maintained his good form in Madrid. Having won the ATP 500 in Barcelona in mid-April, Fils extended his winning streak to nine matches by rolling past Ignacio Buse, Emilio Nava, Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Jiri Lehecka. Sinner proved too good in the semi-finals, but Fils has nonetheless returned to the Top 20 for the first time since September.

No. 34 Rafael Jodar, +8 (Career High)
Arguably the breakout star of 2026 so far, the 19-year-old Jodar lit up his hometown event by marching to his maiden Masters 1000 quarter-final. The 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals competitor raced past Alex de Minaur in the second round for his first Top-10 win, while he also overcame his fellow teenager Joao Fonseca in an intriguing third-round meeting. Outside the Top 900 as recently as April 2025, Jodar is up eight spots to a career-high No. 34.

No. 35 Alejandro Tabilo, +8
Tabilo prevailed from a stacked field that included three other Top 50 players including the man he overcame in three sets in the final, Zizou Bergs.

No. 53 Hubert Hurkacz, +10
A former World No. 6, Hurkacz missed the second half of 2025 after undergoing knee surgery, but he is now back on the brink of the Top 50 after reaching the final at another ATP Challenger 175, the Sardegna Open in Cagliari. The Pole overcame Matteo Berrettini in a big-hitting three-setter in the quarter-finals before falling to another home favourite, Matteo Arnaldi, in the championship match.

Other Notable Top 100 Movers

The Italian defeated Alexander Zverev in the Madrid final on Sunday to lift the trophy for a record fifth Masters 1000 event in a row and extend his winning streak at that level to 28 consecutive matches. Only two other players — Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer — have reached that mark or earned longer winning streaks in Masters 1000 series history (since 1990). Djokovic currently holds the record for the longest and second-longest streaks with 31 and 30 wins, respectively.

Before Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz won 17 consecutive matches at the level in 2025, from the second round in Monte-Carlo until the second round in Paris. Prior to that run, there had not been a new Top-10 winning streak at Masters 1000 events since 2016, when Djokovic reached 22 in a row. Now with Sinner’s exploits, two such streaks have occurred within a year.

Sinner’s last loss at a Masters 1000 event came at the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters, where the Italian was forced to retire during the deciding set of his third-round clash with Tallon Griekspoor.

But Sunday, less than two years on from his retirement, the Spanish legend was on another type of big stage while Jannik Sinner faced Alexander Zverev for the Madrid title.

Nadal was in Miami for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, where he waved the chequered flag to recognise the end of the race, which was held at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Open presented by Itau.

"Hello everyone, it's Rafa here. I am here in the Miami Grand Prix, very excited after a long time without being [at a] race," Nadal said in an Instagram Story for Formula 1. "Looking for an amazing race here, maybe it can rain so that's going to make [it] even more spectacular. But I want to wish the best of luck to every driver, especially Carlos and Fernando."

Nadal spoke with drivers competing in the race, including Spaniards Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso. On Saturday, the 92-time tour-level titlist also spent time with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

While meeting with golf star Jon Rahm and Sainz, Nadal even checked out a steering wheel, to look at the tool the best drivers in the world use.

Although Nadal did not compete in the Miami Open presented by Itau since it moved to Hard Rock Stadium, he earned a 40-12 record at Crandon Park, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The Spaniard made the Miami final five times.

The ceremony will take place at the historic Piazza del Popolo.

All eyes will be on if six-time champion Novak Djokovic lands in the same half as Jannik Sinner, the World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings. The Italian on Sunday made history by claiming a record fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 trophy at the Mutua Madrid Open. Sinner, 24, will return to home soil this week and aim for his first Rome title.

Should Sinner triumph at the Foro Italico, he would join Djokovic as the only men to complete the Career Golden Masters. The 38-year-old Djokovic has won all nine ATP Masters 1000 events twice.

Djokovic is set to return to action for the first time since a fourth-round showing in Indian Wells.

Rome main-draw action will take place from 6-17 May. The past five editions of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia have featured five different champions.
[NO 1 CLUB]

Sinner, Zverev, Jodar & more: The best photos from Madrid

The 2026 Mutua Madrid Open concluded Sunday when Jannik Sinner lifted his fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 trophy and first in the Spanish capital.
The Austrian has been following the ATP Tour's #NextGenATP stars, and one young player in particular has stood out. The former World No. 3 has been impressed by Rafael Jodar's meteoric rise and is considering adding the Spaniard to his roster for the Rome tournament, which runs from 6-17 May.

[ATP FANTASY]

"The young players are very exciting," Thiem said. "Right now, I would go with Jodar because he was super consistent. He won the ATP 250 in Marrakech. Then he played the semi-finals in Barcelona and the quarter-finals in Madrid. So I think there might be some great results coming up from him in the remaining clay swing. So I would go for him."

But another key factor for Thiem is the change in venue from the Caja Magica in Madrid to the Foro Italico. As the Masters 1000 event in Rome is held at a lower altitude than in Madrid, the court tends to be slower. The Austrian shared that if someone played well in Madrid, it does not mean they will also taste similar success in Rome.

“The transition from Madrid to Rome is really, really difficult,” Thiem said. “Madrid is high altitude, super fast court, and Rome is a bit slower, not high altitude anymore, so it is quite different. That’s why I think if somebody is playing super well in Madrid, that doesn’t mean that they will also continue playing super well in Rome.”

Even so, the Austrian will retain Madrid finalists Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev in his lineup for the tournament. Thiem was rewarded in Madrid because both players made the final in the Spanish capital.

"Final in Madrid, Jannik against Sascha, points-wise, [that was a] very good week for me," Thiem said.

Another player making the cut for Thiem is his former rival, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who reached the Rome championship match in 2022 and most recently the fourth round in Madrid.

"I will also keep Tsitsipas because it seems like he is playing better again," Thiem shared. "Right now, Tsitsipas is very cheap in the budget. The rest, I will have a look at, but I hope that I can put one young guy, for example, Jodar, in my team."

Fils turns injury comeback into Turin charge

Arthur Fils returned to the Tour in February following an eight-month layoff due to a back injury and has quickly reasserted himself at the top of the game.

The 21-year-old has surged to fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin after reaching the last four at the Mutua Madrid Open, his second ATP Masters 1000 semi-final run this season (Miami). Fils leapfrogged Daniil Medvedev and Ben Shelton in the Race To Turin.

The Frenchman arrived in Madrid following a title run at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona, where he lifted his first trophy of 2026 and fourth overall. In the Spanish capital, Fils extended his winning streak to nine matches before falling to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

Fils improved his season record to 22-6, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, to continue his quest of making his Nitto ATP Finals debut.

PIF ATP Live Race To Turin (after Madrid)

Madrid champion Sinner strengthened his grip atop the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin after claiming a record fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 crown, a streak that dates back to last year’s Rolex Paris Masters. The Italian, who won the prestigious year-end event in 2024 and 2025, holds 4,900 points while rival Carlos Alcaraz is second with 3,650 points.

Sinner was dominant in the Madrid final, dispatching Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 to secure the title. Despite the defeat, Zverev solidified his third-place standing following his first final appearance of 2026. The German leaves Madrid with a 26-8 season record.

Zverev has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals in eight of the past nine years and is in good position to earn his place in Turin again. The only year in that span he did not qualify was in 2022, when he suffered a severe ankle injury at Roland Garros that forced him to shut down his season. The 29-year-old is within 710 points of Alcaraz and has a 1,060 point buffer over fourth-placed Fils.

Italian Flavio Cobolli has climbed to ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, boosting his hopes of making his debut at the season finale. Last year, home fans in Turin had two Italians to rally behind in Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. Ahead of Cobolli in the Race To Turin is record seven-time champion Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur. Cobolli has 1,270 points, just 35 points behind eighth-placed De Minaur.

Seven of the top eight have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals before, with the lone exception being Fils. Four of the top eight have lifted the trophy at the year-end event: Sinner, Zverev, Medvedev and Djokovic.
[NO 1 CLUB]

Sinner highlights building blocks behind record M1000 streak: ‘I like the journey’

Jannik Sinner went where no ATP Tour star has gone before on Sunday afternoon at the Mutua Madrid Open.

By defeating Alexander Zverev to claim the trophy at the clay-court event in the Spanish capital, Sinner registered his fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, a tally that not even the ‘Big Three’ of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic can match. Yet Sinner, who has followed his Paris title run last November by claiming titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo and Madrid this year, was quick to dispel any direct comparisons with his latest achievement.

“As I always said, I cannot compare myself with Rafa, Roger, Novak,” said the 24-year-old at his post-match press conference in Madrid. “What they did, it's something incredible. I don't play for these records, or I don't play for records in general. I play for myself. I play for my team, because they know what's behind. Also my family, because with the success I've had, they also never changed how they are towards me… It means, of course, a lot, great numbers. But there is a lot of discipline, a lot of sacrifice behind this.

“There's also daily routines that I put in. I'm the first person who needs to be ready in the morning to wake up. I like the journey. I like to put myself in the best possible position to be the best version of myself. I don't play for other records. As I said, what the other players did in the past, and Novak's still doing, it's something incredible. I cannot compare myself with them.”

Sinner, who eased past Zverev 6-1, 6-2 in the Madrid final, has dropped just two sets across the 27 matches in his current Masters 1000 winning streak. The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings did not want to name a ‘most difficult’ match during his run, which has come across indoor hard courts, outdoor hard courts and clay.

“Talking about tough matches, every match is tough,” Sinner said. “There is not one that's easy. Also today, if I dropped a little bit of concentration, break back in the second, and, you know, everything starts over again.

“So it's tough to say, different conditions all the time. Paris is indoor. Then you go to Indian Wells, very bouncy. Miami is very flat. Then you go change surface, you go to Monaco, it's a bit slower. Then you go here, it's very high altitude, and if you serve well it's a lot to do. But it's tough to say, and I don't want to pick couple of matches.”

Sinner may seem near-unstoppable in this moment, but that is not likely to deter the 28-time tour-level champion from seeking even further improvement in his game. In a sport in which time rarely stands still, he was keen to highlight the emergence of new talents ultimately aiming to challenge him at the top of the game.

“There are great players, players we know, [and also players] who seem like they are coming, and they are actually there already. You never know. Someone like [Rafael] Jodar, six months ago, nobody saw, and he's now here around the names. Maybe this can happen in a couple of months, there is a new player coming. [Alexander] Blockx made semis here, and before he was a little bit undercover.

“It's very tough to say. I think great potential players, every one of them. You need to be ready. You need to inform yourself. With every name that's going to come, you need to be very much informed. Of course, my job is always to improve as a player, because at the end of the day the results are only a consequence of how much work you put in. We are definitely working very well, but we need to keep going because if you drop a little bit, people are going to catch very fast. So I'm very happy to keep working.”

Zverev following Madrid final defeat: 'There's a big gap between Sinner & everyone else'

Jannik Sinner has consistently had Alexander Zverev’s number in recent months, beating the German in semi-finals at ATP Masters 1000 events in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo. And in the Mutua Madrid Open final, the pattern continued, with the Italian cruising to the title, dropping just three games.

But while the matchup has looked increasingly one-sided, Zverev insisted Sunday’s defeat was less about Sinner’s dominance and more about his own level, admitting he would have lost to anyone on Tour playing the way he did.

“He's very good, of course. But I think today I would have lost to anybody, to be very fair. I think today I played an awful tennis match,” Zverev said after Sinner triumphed 6-1, 6-2.

The German dropped just two sets en route to his fourth Madrid final and earned dominant straight-set victories against Flavio Cobolli and Alexander Blockx in the two matches leading up to the title showdown.

However, the World No. 3 was once again unable to have the answers against Sinner and now trails the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings 4-10 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series, not winning a set in the past six meetings.

“I think everybody's struggling against him,” Zverev said of Sinner. “He's won the last five Masters events, so it's not like I'm the only one losing to him. I'm just losing to him more because I get to him every single time and I lose to him. So, it's like that. Today doesn't make sense to talk much about strategy, it was absolutely a terrible match by me. I don't think there's much strategy involved.”

Sinner is the first player in series history (since 1990) to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles and has lost just two sets across those events, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Zverev believes the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings is by far and away the best player in the world right now.

“I think he's very stable,” Zverev said. “He doesn't have dips, he doesn't have phases where he goes down. I think that's why he's world No. 1. To me, that's more spectacular, I think, keeping the level the whole time.

“I think there's a big gap between Sinner and everybody else right now. It's quite simple. I think there's a big gap between Sinner and everybody else. And I think there's a big gap between Alcaraz, myself, maybe Novak, and everybody else. I think there are two gaps right now. It's difficult to say that there's not a gap between Sinner and everybody else if he hasn't lost a match in Masters events since Shanghai.”

Zverev, a seven-time Masters 1000 champion and two-time winner in Madrid, will next compete in Rome.

ATPTour.com relives the Italian's journey to the trophy through videos of key moments.

[ATP FANTASY]

Sinner had never been beyond the quarter-finals in Madrid prior to this year and was in slight trouble during his opening match against Benjamin Bonzi. The 24-year-old lost the first set, and just his second overall in his past five Masters 1000 events, but responded to overcome the Frenchman 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-4.

Sinner had now found his range in the high-altitude Madrid conditions and made easy work of 22-year-old Elmer Moller, whom the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings brushed aside 6-2, 6-3 in the third round.

Sinner then defeated British lefty Cameron Norrie, who provided some resistance in the second set. In the pair's first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting, Sinner triumphed 6-2, 7-5 to match his best result at the clay-court event and reach the quarter-finals.

Next up was #NextGenATP Spaniard Rafael Jodar. The 19-year-old beat Alex de Minaur and Joao Fonseca to advance to his first Masters 1000 quarter-final and forced Sinner to produce his best level on Manolo Santana Stadium, such as this backhand break point down.

The Italian finally put Jodar's bid to an end, racing through the second-set tie-break without losing a point, winning 6-2, 7-6(0).

Sinner's semi-final opponent was another man in red-hot form. Arthur Fils entered the match riding a nine-match winning streak after triumphing at the ATP 500 event in Barcelona in April. However, as always, Sinner came up with big shots in big moments.

The top seed was superb throughout his second meeting against Fils (2-0 Sinner), advancing to his first Madrid final with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Sinner delivered in the Madrid final to make history. The 24-year-old powered past Alexander Zverev for the loss of just three games (6-1, 6-2) to clinch his ninth Masters 1000 title. The Italian has now claimed 15 'Big Titles' – a combination of Grand Slam championships, trophies at the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and Olympic singles gold medals. Sinner is the first player in series history (since 1990) to have claimed the first four Masters 1000 titles of the season.

Sinner has now clinched nine Masters 1000 crowns, one more than Alcaraz, who has been victorious at that level on eight occasions.

This was the first time Sinner has won the trophy in Madrid. Sinner has an opportunity to move ahead of Alcaraz in the pair's ‘Big Titles’ battle in the coming month, with World No. 2 Alcaraz missing Rome and Roland Garros due to injury.

The 24-year-old can become just the second man, alongside Novak Djokovic, to complete the Career Golden Masters at his next event in Rome, where his best result is a final showing last year.

Big Titles Won: Alcaraz & Sinner

Alcaraz made a dream start to the season when he completed the Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in February, opening up a four-trophy lead in the 'Big Titles' battle. However, Sinner has since won all four 'Big Titles' available to level.

The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings Sinner has won a Big Title for every 4.6 tournaments he has played in his career. The only players with better rates are Djokovic (3.3), Nadal (3.5), Alcaraz (3.9) and Roger Federer (4.4).

The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings eased to a 6-1, 6-2 championship-match triumph inside Manolo Santana Stadium to become the first man to win five consecutive Masters 1000 events. Sinner, who has dropped just two sets across his five title runs (in Paris last November and Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo and Madrid in 2026), did not face a break point en route to his ninth consecutive Lexus ATP Head2Head win against Zverev.

“I think there is a lot of work behind it,” Sinner said, when asked what winning five Masters 1000 titles in a row meant to him. “A lot of dedication and sacrifice I put in every day. Obviously, it means a lot to me, seeing these results. At some point, results are going to be down, which is normal.

“I’m very happy that I’ve continued to believe in myself. I’m showing up every day, at every practice session, trying to put in the right work with the right discipline. To do so, you need to have the right team behind you, which I have. I’m very happy about me, but also the team, and this means a lot to all of us.”

Zverev arrived in Madrid bidding to become the fourth man to win at least three Madrid titles after Rafael Nadal (five titles), Novak Djokovic (three) and Roger Federer (three). Sinner had not been past the quarter-finals in three previous appearances at the Caja Magica, but the nature of his final victory could hardly have been more comprehensive.

Sinner’s dominance was reflected in several key metrics, according to Infosys ATP Stats. The Italian converted all four break points he earned, did not face a single break point himself, and won 93 per cent (27/29) of points behind his first serve. He struck the ball with trademark power and precision from the baseline throughout, offering two-time Madrid champion Zverev little chance to find his feet in his first title match of the season.

“I started the match very well, breaking straight away,” Sinner reflected on his 58-minute win. “He was not playing his best tennis today, so I just tried to go with my front foot and I’m very happy obviously about the level I’m playing. Incredible winning another title like this, that means a lot to me. It’s been another incredible tournament.”

Sinner has now won eight of the nine Masters 1000 tournaments. The only title he is missing is the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, meaning the 24-year-old has the chance to complete the Career Golden Masters on home soil at the 2026 edition of that event, which begins next week. Sinner is bidding to join Djokovic as the only man to complete the Career Golden Masters: The Serbian has won all nine Masters 1000 events twice.

[ATP FANTASY]

Although Zverev was unable to find his best level in Sunday's encounter, the way in which Sinner dismantled the World No. 3 was breathtaking to watch. The Italian raced to a 5-0 lead after losing only two points across Zverev’s first two service games, and the writing appeared on the wall after he capitalised on another sloppy game from the German to break for 2-1 in the second set.

If Sinner had any nerves as he marched towards his first Madrid title, he did not show them. With Zverev struggling to establish himself in rallies, the Italian notched his fourth break of the match for 5-2 and then aptly served out to love to cap his commanding win.

Sinner now leads Zverev 10-4 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series, having at one point trailed 1-4. He has now earned five straight-sets wins against his rival in the space of six months, including in each of his five consecutive Masters 1000 title runs.
