5 Easy Concentration Techniques for Improving Concentration

Concentration is a skill that can be trained by practicing, and if mastered can greatly improve your productivity and quality of work. It is easy to say that we need to concentrate, but few people know how to do so. With deep concentration, we are also able to connect with our subconscious and enable us to achieve an inner calm.

Below are 5 easy concentration techniques for improving concentration. They are simple, straightforward, and achievable as long as you put your mind to it, in other words, employ your will power. You will start seeing the effect of these 5 techniques over some time, as these are not immediate miracles and require time and effort to build up your concentration levels.

Concentration Technique #1: Stretch your limits
You have experienced moments at work or when studying when you felt like you needed a break and you find your mind wandering and unable to focus. Learn to stretch your limits by pushing yourself to complete perhaps 15 more minutes of work, or to finish reading the chapter in your textbook before taking a break. By setting achievable targets, you are training up your mental stamina and pushing yourself to break through the limits that you have set for your mind unconsciously.

Concentration Technique #2: Focus on one thing
We have a dozen and one things to think about, such as picking up the laundry, grocery shopping, work, cooking dinner, picking the kids from work, and the list goes on. You may find your mind wandering at work because you are worried about what to cook for dinner, or that you have remembered everything you need to pick up at the grocers. It is not that you are unable to concentrate, but simply that your mind has too many thoughts, and you need to control your brain. Tell yourself that you will focus on the other issues once you are done with work, and keep your mind on your work. Acknowledge that there are other tasks that need tending to, but they can wait as they are not as important.

Concentration Technique #3: Tune out Distractions
Much like horses have blinders to keep them staring in one direction and oblivious to their surroundings, we need to develop the mental equivalent to keep focused on the task at hand. If you have an alternative place to work or study that has no distractions, by all means move your work there. However, it is difficult to chase our colleagues away or tell the phone to stop ringing because it is distracting you! Learn to place blinders over your mind, or physically cup your hands around your vision to remind your brain to focus.

Concentration Technique #4: It is Ok to Take a Break
No matter how good your concentration is, or your will power, we are merely human. This means that it is perfectly acceptable to take short breaks, and you will find that your mind will feel rejuvenated and better equipped to take on more challenges after a short rest. Do not feel bad about taking breaks, as they are essential to increasing your efficiency. Pushing yourself beyond your limits is encouraged, but overworking is not!

Concentration Technique #5: Variety is Key
Our brain is not like a computer, and it needs stimulation and variety to remain engaged and interested at the task at hand. If you must slog at an Excel spreadsheet for the whole day, take occasional breaks and engage your mind in other activities. This will keep it alert, and keep boredom at bay. If your mind is focused on one task for extended periods of time, the repetitive activity may cause your attention to waver or be reduced.

Why Take an Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Test

There are many symptoms that a person suffering from ADD will display. These include a lack of organization, restlessness, inability to concentrate, agitation and impulsive behaviour. However, these symptoms are easily mistaken with that of other diseases, such as thyroid, depression, or simply an excessive intake of sugar.

If you find that you, or your child, have constantly exhibited the above symptoms for a long period of 3 to 6 months, there is a possibility that you are suffering from ADD. However, it is extremely difficult to accurately diagnose ADD, which is the main explanation why some adults have never received treatment as a child.

Even if you firmly believe that you are suffering from ADD, or vice versa, the significance of this disease and the possible treatment options that you may seek mean that you should always seek a professional opinion. As ADD is a mental illness, it is difficult to test for it. Your symptoms could be a case of another illness such as autism or impaired hearing, or a high stress environment. Further, it is debatable to determine if the child is simply extremely precocious, or if he is hyperactive.

When you make a trip to your family doctor, or to a professional in this field, he will first run you through a thorough physical examination. This is to ensure that there is no other medical or physical cause for your symptoms, as many diseases display similar symptoms as ADD. In general, the symptoms can be classified into inattentiveness, hyperactivity, or both.

Your doctor will also run though your family’s medical history to determine if it was genetically passed down, as well as to calculate the likelihood that any offspring will be vulnerable to ADD. Traumatic and significant events that have occurred in the recent history should also be discussed and shared, as they could contribute to environmental stress that your child has been facing, which caused him to display ADD symptoms.

Where possible, records of the individual’s behavior and participation in class or at work, as well as interaction with his friends during breaks should be made available to the doctor. This will help to reduce any possible bias based on the child’s preferences, or to determine if the child only acts up in a particular class or for all classes. Reasons for the child’s inattentiveness could be a distraction from friends around him, a class bully, or that the child has poor vision and needs sight correction. It will also help your doctor to determine if your child’s behavior and school results tie in with his IQ level.

All these procedures will be helpful for the doctor to compare against the DSM-IV criteria used to determine if the individual suffers from ADD.

Thus, whilst it is inadvisable to diagnose independently if you or your child suffers from ADD, it is recommended that you do your research and attempt to find out as much as you can about ADD, its symptoms, causes and treatments. A great place to start would be the Internet, and with relevant information you will be able to make informed decisions.

Women with ADD and its Effects

Whilst the occurrences of ADD between men and women are about equal, women are more likely to proactively seek treatment. This is just one of the first few differences between men and women. Certainly, the women have it tougher than the men, especially if they have to work to support the family and do double shift when they get home, cooking, cleaning and taking care of the kids.

Whilst the males are more likely to expel their negative emotions through words and actions, females tend to internalize how they feel. This usually leads to depression, as feelings of inadequacy, guilt and low self esteem work together with ADD. Acknowledging that they have a problem by the name of ADD can come as a relief, as they realize that there is a reason for all the emotional upheavals that they have been experiencing.

Women have it tougher, simply because society expects too much from them. Imagine getting a man to work all day, and then go home and do the chores and care for the children – not going to happen any day soon. So husbands and sons, learn to be more appreciative of what the females are doing for you. That said, there is certainly no need for females to all turn into superheroes.

If you are a female suffering from ADD, you would be wise to pick your own battles. If you cannot cope with working and taking care of the home, choose one and stick with it. If your financial situation does not allow for you to stop working, perhaps you can look into hiring a babysitter or for paid help to assist you with the workload. There is certainly no shame in doing so.

For mothers who suffer from ADD, they may easily find themselves on a short fuse as they tend to the chores and deal with the little mishaps, accidents and interruptions that come with having children. Mothers should hence learn to recognise the possible triggers that may lead to a loss of temper which is detrimental to the family. Talk to the children if they are old enough to understand, and establish some ground rules for when they can and cannot interrupt. If you are unable to cope with the mischief they have whirled up, send them to their rooms and take some time to calm down before dealing with the problem.

There are many medications available for dealing with ADD, and whilst with the help of stimulants it is now possible to focus, do not get too carried away. Try not to attempt more than you normally would, as this would lead you to overworking your body and mind. It is also important to constantly consult your doctor to find out what the medication is supposed to do, and review if it is effective. This is especially if you have an active sex life, are considering expanding the family, or approaching menopause. Different medications can interact differently with your body and result in lowered sex drive for example, so it is recommended that you both discuss what you want and how best to achieve it.

The option of psychotherapy treatments should also be considered seriously, as medication merely solves the symptoms. Therapy and medication are usually prescribed hand in hand, and the treatments can range from individual therapy to family and group therapy.

Remember that you are a capable individual, and that ADD is a problem that can be treated and dealt with so that it no longer negatively impacts your life. Think positive and act positive!

6 Great Concentration Exercises

It is not easy to concentrate especially when we are surrounded by distractions, such as the people around us, the hum of the computer, or other background noises. In order to achieve greater concentration, we need to have a strong will in order to block out all other distractions except for the task at hand. Your thoughts have more power than you give them credit for, and if we apply our will to improving our concentration and reaching our goals, we can take better control of the direction in life that we are headed towards.

Here is a list of great concentration exercises that you should practice if you want to improve your concentration. Keep in mind that you should be calm and relaxed, physically and mentally. You can achieve this state by taking deep breathes and focusing on your breathing.

These exercises should be attempted for 5 minutes, and lengthened to 10 and then 15 minutes when you are satisfied with your own results and achievements. Do not be discouraged, and keep working at them as they seem simple on paper, but actually require a great deal of mental willpower and concentration to achieve. If you find your mind wandering away from the task before the time limit is reached, bring yourself back and start over.

Exercise #1:
Count backwards slowly in your mind, starting from 100 back to 1. Do not allow your mind to wander to other thoughts, such as the time, or why the neighbour’s dog is barking. Focus solely on the numbers, and if you find yourself daydreaming or confused as to which number you are at and which direction you are counting in, start over.

Exercise #2:
You can move on to this exercise when you can complete exercise #1 successfully. This time, count backwards slowly from 100 to 1 in your mind, skipping in multiples of 3. For example, 100, 97, 94 and so on. Like the previous exercise, this should be completely mental. Do not hold a piece of paper with the numbers written on it, and do not use your fingers or any other means of keeping track of your position.

Exercise #3:
Take a simple thought, scenario, or word and keep it focused in your mind for the entire time limit. If it is a word, repeat it to yourself without getting distracted by your favourite way of using the word, or why you picked the word. Focus solely on the word and how it sounds. This should be the same if it is a thought or a scenario. Do not let your mind wander and contemplate why you have picked that particular scenario, or what it means and how it came to be. Focus simply on what it is.

Exercise #4:
Pick a simple object that you are familiar with, such as a pencil, or a fruit. Concentrate and look at the fruit taking in its texture, colour and any other physical attributes that are evident. Spend the entire time limit simply looking and absorbing the object from all angels. Your mind should only be seeing the object, and you should not let it wander to other thoughts.

Exercise #5:
When you are able to complete exercise #4, you can move on to this exercise. Picture the same object in your mind, and try to recall every single detail. The colour, the weight, the feel of the object and how it looks. If you are unable to recall, you may open your eyes to look at the object, and then close your eyes and concentrate again.

Exercise #6:
When you have completed the rest of the exercises, take the entire time limit to sit down and breathe deeply. Focus on your breathing, in and out. Let your mind be cleared of all thoughts, so that your focus is solely on your breathing. Do not entertain any stray thoughts and keep your mind completely clear.

5 Ways to Counter Adult Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Children are not the only ones who suffer from ADD, many intelligent adults are struggling with this condition as well. Whilst it is nothing to be ashamed of, it is important that you seek help and treatment, as this can significantly improve your quality of life. Most sufferers are apt to hide their condition, and over time experience low self confidence and find that there is little meaning in their lives.

If you have taken active steps to find out more about adult ADD and what it entails, as well as looked for a professional opinion, then you will find that the following 5 ways to counter ADD will be highly useful for you.

Method #1: Overcome your Inattentiveness
Being unable to focus or pay attention can be an annoying trait, but it is not difficult to deal with. Train yourself to follow a certain schedule everyday based on what you need to accomplish. This will give you something concrete to follow and focus on, as you have acknowledged the various tasks you are responsible for. This will cause your mind to stop pushing the various thoughts through your mind. It is also handy to keep a notebook with you at all times. When you’re concentrating on one task and random thoughts start filling up your mind, simply jot them down to think over at a later time.

Method #2: Face the Problem
Nothing can be more comforting that facing up that you have a problem, and that you are normal. By admitting that you have a problem, you will find that it is easier for you to take active steps to treat the problem. Talk to your friends and family and help them to understand why you behave a certain way sometimes. This will also highlight to you the areas that you need to work on or take notice of. Scheduling regular sessions with a therapist will also help you to work through your problems.

Method #3: Kick the Restlessness
Your mind and body are restless because they find the tasks at hand too boring, or a lack of a challenge. Engage in frequent sessions of exercise, such as going to the gym or playing soccer 4 times a week, to help you get rid of all the extra restlessness that seems to be bugging you.

Method #4: Distance yourself when Necessary
After you’ve talked to your friends and family, you should be able to identify situations and possible warning signs that you are getting agitated or losing your focus. When you feel the symptoms coming on, take a deep breathe and calm yourself down. Focus on your breathing to relax. If that doesn’t work, distance yourself physically by going out to take a breath of air or pace away the excess energy.

Method #5: Boredom, be Gone
If you are aware that your job is too boring for you, find ways to make it interesting and challenging. For example, a particularly tedious job could become challenging if you set yourself a time limit to beat, or if you promise yourself a nice reward for completing the task. Alternatively, you can engage your other senses to keep your mind challenged. Burning aromatherapy candles will have a dual purpose of exuding calming properties and engaging your senses. Listening to music in the background will also serve as a much needed distraction from the boredom of your task.

Adult ADHD - What is Adult ADHD Really

Whilst ADHD seems to be a condition that afflicts children mainly, it also occurs in a minority of adults. These individuals are usually highly intelligent, and it can be a frustrating and disheartening experience for them. ADHD is able to strike in these adults as their high level of intelligence makes their tasks appear to be boring, and subconsciously write off the jobs that they are engaged in.

The human mind is organized in such a way as to be capable of having multiple thoughts running across it simultaneously. This can sometimes be difficult to cope with as the mind is unable to rank the thoughts in order of importance. Especially for those who are highly capable, the torrent of thoughts that the mind has to process at any one time make it difficult to capture focus on, and hence results in frustration.

The biggest problem with ADHD in adults is that they are able to hide their condition, as they feel that it is a weakness or something to be ashamed of. However, it is important that you recognize it as a condition that can and should be treated, as it will have a positive impact on how you view yourself, as well as how you can deal with the goals that you want to achieve.

Individuals who suffer from ADHD are likely to face difficulties at home as well as at the workplace. They are more likely to turn to substance abuse, have a lower self confidence, and for married couples, higher divorce rates.

There are some common symptoms that adults who suffer from ADHD experience, and these include an inability to manage time and their goals. They find it difficult to control their selves, and are inattentive, easily bored and restless. If you suspect that you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, you should seek a professional opinion from a doctor.

If you are diagnosed with ADHD, do not be afraid to share your condition with your family and loved ones. By sharing with them your thoughts and feelings, they will be better equipped to help you, and there are also many support groups that you can turn to for advice and encouragement.

That said, the costs for treating ADHD are fairly high, and up to US77billion is spent on its medical treatments annually. This can make it difficult to seek treatment, especially as individuals who suffer from ADHD are generally less able to hold high paying jobs due to their restless and inattentive nature.

However, you should not let the costs stop you from seeking treatment. In the long run, ADHD can cause you to lose out on a significant amount of income annually, as well as have a negative impact on your overall mental and physical wellbeing. If you are on treatment on ADHD, chances are you will find it easier to focus, and to allow your intelligence and creativity to help you excel in the workplace.

Various Forms of ADHD Medications

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) occurs in children as well as adults, and cause symptoms such as restlessness, inattentiveness, aggression, agitation, inability to focus as well as hyperactivity and learning disorders in children. It should be seen as a serious and debilitating condition, and if you suspect you or your child of suffering from any of these symptoms, it would be wise to seek a professional opinion. ADHD is one of the most common neurological diseases in America, but it is not without cure. With proper medication and treatment, you can lead a normal life too, without the severe effects of ADHD.

Majority of ADHD sufferers turn to stimulants such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamine (Dexedrine). These stimulants serve to increase dopamine and norepinphrine in the brain, increasing the communication and connection between different regions of the brain. Stimulants can be separated into 2 separate categories, based on the time duration of the medication.

Ritalin is the most commonly prescribed medication, and can be used on children who are older than 6. It is a fast acting medication, and can last for up to 4 hours. Dexedrine is also extremely popular as it can be used on children who are older than 3, and can last for up to 5 hours. The duration of the medication varies from each individual.

There are also stimulants that last for longer durations, such as Metadate CD and Concerta. Metadate CD is a recent medication that also contains methylphenidate, and can last up to 8 hours. It comes in capsule form that can be swallowed or mixed in with meals. Concerta can last up to 12 hours.

For those who have children unable to swallow pills, research by FDA is underway for the release of Methypatch, which is adhered to the skin to deliver the chemical into the body. There is a huge range of medication available, each with different durations and some of these have harmful side effects. These range from headaches, stomach upsets, loss of appetite, insomnia, anxiety, depression and irritability. Speak to your doctor who will be better able to recommend one that suits your condition the best. It is also important to take note that these medications may be addictive if consumed in the long run.

For individuals who find stimulants unsuitable due to its side effects or existing medical conditions, there are alternative treatments available as well. Usually, a second medication is mixed with the current stimulant. For individuals who find stimulants ineffective, a complete substitute of medication may be necessary.

Common non-stimulant medications include atomoxetine (Strattera), which whilst more expensive, can be used for adults and is taken once a day. It works by strengthening the nerves that rely of norepinephrine for communication in the brain. However, it is not without its own set of side effects, similar to stimulants. Buproprion SR and XL have also been used for treating adults, but it is less effective compared to amphetamine.

Antidepressents such as SSRIs, tricyclic antidepressents and MAOI may also be prescribed for treating ADHD.

Various Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Approximately 5% of the population suffers from ADD, with majority of them being children. However, it is possible for ADD to carry on into adulthood due to a lack of treatment. Whilst there is insufficient research to support the causes of ADD, it can be due to genetics, prenatal conditions or neurological damage.

ADD is a condition whereby the reticular activating system is impaired, reducing the amount of norepinephrine in the brain, which causes difficulty in communication within different regions of the brain. The symptoms of ADD are similar for children and adults, although adults are seldom diagnosed as they have a better ability to cover up their reactions. There are many forms of ADD as well, ranging from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Behavior Disorder (ADBD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) to Conduct Disorder (CD).

In general, the symptoms such as inability to focus and agitation are known to carry over into adulthood. For our purposes, we will be identifying the various symptoms without distinction towards adults or children. This is due to the likelihood of symptoms carrying over as the children mature.

Inability to Focus
Due to the short attention span of individuals suffering from ADD, they find it difficult to focus on any one task or thought process at a time. This causes them to appear as bored, and they tend to be forgetful. Misplacing items or having wandering thoughts during discussions are very common for them.

Disorganization
For individuals who suffer from ADD, they tend to be restless and inattentive, making it difficult for them to focus on one task at a time. Hence, they tend to be more disorganized as they jump from one object to another, and most of the times they are unaware of their environment, giving them the appearance of being highly disorganized and flighty.

Hyperactivity
Especially for children, it is easy to observe symptoms of hyperactivity. These is usually reflected in their ability to remain in the same position for more than a few seconds. For children, there is a tendency to ignore instructions and be immersed in playing or running around the room. For adults, it may be subtle signs such as fidgeting in the seat continuously, or playing with their hands and feet.

Impulsiveness
This could be manifested in the need to talk excessively, or cutting into conversations before the other party has finished. For children who are playing, it could be sudden actions or a stubborn streak to halt playtime activities. In the classroom, they tend to speak out of turn without waiting for the teacher to call on them, or even before the teacher has finished asking a question. In adults, there is a dangerous tendency to indulge in dangerous activities without careful considerations of the risks or consequences.

Low Self Confidence
Adults and children alike who suffer from ADD tend to have low self confidence due to self directed frustration at their inability to focus and complete tasks at hand. They also suffer from the social stigma and the fear that they are not good enough due to comments from people around them.

How Do You Know if Your Child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

There are more than 2 million children suffering from ADHD in America, and the figures are set to increase exponentially every 4 years. Despite this, most parents are unaware of how to recognize ADHD, or how to treat it. The symptoms of ADHD are also easily mistaken for a child misbehaving, making it even harder for a parent to differentiate between the two.

ADHD is a form of Attention Deficit Disorder, and is the most common neurological disease that children suffer from, with up to 5% of the children in America afflicted. As a parent, learn to recognize the symptoms so that you can seek professional help for your child. The main symptoms of ADHD are aggression, impulsiveness, restlessness, learning disabilities, an inability to focus and hyperactivity. Hence, even for parents who know the signs to look out for, it is often difficult to draw the line between normal misbehavior and ADHD.

How to you differentiate between the various forms of ADD? Add simply means that your child is unable to concentrate, and likely to forget what you have told him less than 10 seconds ago. ADHD on the other hand, means that not only has he forgotten what you have said, he is also likely to be running around instead of staying still whilst you address him. If you suspect that your child may be suffering from ADHD, it is better to err on the side of caution and visit your doctor for a professional opinion. It is treatable, and if identified early you can make a difference in helping your child learn and cope with life.

There are many symptoms of ADHD, such as forgetfulness, restlessness, aggression, agitation, depression, anxiety, impulsive behavior and an inability to focus. However, these are highly common and often confused with the symptoms of anxiety, depression, thyroid, or a stressful environment. Excessive sugar and allergies may also cause the same symptoms, as well as if your child is highly intelligent causing him to be easily bored and hence restless.

Fortunately, more parents are gaining greater awareness of the problem, and schools have also played a major role in the dissemination of information regarding ADHD. Whilst it is a significant problem for a child suffering from ADHD, keep in mind that you are never alone and that there is help available readily. Often times, medication is the first answer that parents look to for solving the problem. However, there are other alternatives as well.

Parents should try to keep a closer watch over the child’s diet, and cut off foods with high sugar content, or possible allergies. Give the child more attention and time, and help him to feel connected to the environment. He knows that he is different, and you should try your best to help him feel that he belongs. Whilst medication can treat the symptoms, it is equally if not more important to ensure that the child’s emotional and mental health is well taken care of.

ADD is when the reticular activating system in your brain, which is a part of your body’s central nervous system, is dysfunctional. This area of the brain is responsible for coordinating the information from one region of the brain to another via norepinephrine, due to external information. When it is impaired, there is excessive stimulation causing the mind to be overworked and unable to cope, leading to a lack of focus and other symptoms.

There are many forms of ADD, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Behavior Disorder (ADBD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), to name a few. Of these, ADHD is the most well know form of ADD, and affects approximately 5% of all children in America, making it the most common neurological disease.

Many factors contribute to ADD, and the breakdown of the reticular activating system. Excessive sugar consumption reduces the brain’s sensitivity to norepinephrine, making it difficult for the brain to pass messages to different regions of the mind. Other factors include oxygen deprivation during birth, genetics, a dearth of nutrients in his diet, and substance abuse during pregnancy, among others. Statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health show that up to 5% of the population has ADHD, and that up to 20% of pregnant mothers smoke during pregnancy, with 11% consuming alcohol.

Common indicators that an individual is suffering from ADD include learning disabilities, agitation, aggression, short attention spans and poor memory retention. The symptoms of ADD are also easily confused with other diseases or attributed to different factors, making it difficult to diagnose. For example, the main symptoms of ADD are forgetfulness, restlessness, depression, inability to focus and impulsive behavior. However, thyroid, depression, anxiety, or a stressful environment can also result in the same symptoms. Excessive sugar consumption can cause impulsive behavior and restlessness, and allergies can cause reactions that reduce the neurotransmitters in the brain causing the same symptoms.

There are many treatments available for those who suffer from ADD, and the most common one is the use of antidepressant drugs. However, these medications need up to 6 weeks to take effect, and have severe side effects such as increasing depression, agitation, and suicidal notions. There are also alternative treatments, such as herbs and nutrients used to balance the brain chemistry that has been impaired. These are encouraged as they do not have side effects, and are specially designed to provide the necessary acids, hormones and neural growth needed to assist the reticular activating system.

For those who are suffering from ADD, it is recommended to cut down on sugar intake as sugar consumption is linked to aggressive behavior. Individuals should also be tested for allergies, especially those triggered by food dyes. In line with this, soft drinks should be avoided.
