Dear Diary!

19.03.17

Dear Diary! I don't know how I am managing to write today. Writing in a moving vehicle has always been a nauseating experience for me. The roads are bumpy, making it difficult to concentrate; but today I have to make an exception. Today I move to the city of my dreams. The road that leads to it is smooth as silk, yet I find it difficult to scribble down my thoughts; my pen still shakes in my hands. I blame it on the overwhelming excitement of finally making it...

23.04.17

Dear Diary! I am sorry that I have been away for so long. Things have just been crazy after the move. It took me some time to settle down, and then the dust took its own time to do the same. The apartment is nice though I have to share it with a few roommates. Budget is tight of course. Good things don't come cheap. A country boy like me has to adjust to the glamours and glitters of the city, and alongside, with the rates. Sometimes I do miss the country rates of produce and groceries. But mind you! that is the only thing I miss. The quality of goods here is so refined and amazing. Just yesterday, while walking through the isles of a mart, in the fruit section, I must've spotted at least a dozen exotic fruit I never knew existed. I didn't buy them, or rather, I couldn't. But that will be changing soon. You see, my training at my new job has ended. Tomorrow I go to the office as an official employee. It is probation period, but it's only 6 short months. Then will arrive the real good stuff...

05.06.17

Dear Diary! Am I a horrible person to be ignoring you so much of late? I really don't mean to and I really feel bad for it but I guess, priorities change when life does. I am going through my probation rather decently. I really don't want to mess up during this time frame so I give all my time to work. There are so many talented individuals competing for the same growth opportunities I am, and if I am to come out on top at the end, I have to outshine everyone else. There is simply no time to slack. But I do wish to find a little more time to write, but every time I think of doing it, I decide against it and give that time to work. I hope you can forgive me. What am I talking about? You are just an inanimate object. It is I who needs to forgive myself...

11.08.17
Dear Diary! Yesterday, a colleague said to me that this city is too fast for me. This was not the first time someone said that to me, but I am starting to seriously ponder on what it means. Because in the literal sense, the time flows in this city with the same speed as anywhere else. If everywhere else is OK for me, then technically, so should be this city. Yes! The distances here are great and you are often required to be at opposite ends of the city to get one thing done and that travelling takes up a lot of time. But this applies to everyone. Why do they only say it to me? Why is the city not fast for anyone else (considering the statement to be true, which it aint)? I walk the same speed, I work at the same rate, I use the same cab system as everyone else to get to places; yet they claim the city is too fast for me. I just don't get it. Maybe they just say such things to dampen the spirits of people. Maybe they just repeat to me what others had said to them in the past. Or maybe they don't know what and why they say...It's just the way of this city.

23.10.17

I am so angry and frustrated and have no place to vent. I guess writing in the diary will do the trick. Today was my first day out of probation, and my boss called me in and said that my performance has been "borderline satisfactory" and that I "needed to up my game" to survive in this place. I just don't know what the hell they want me to do more than what I am already doing. I have been busting my ass off for this company for over 7 months now, and this is how they thank me for it. Ingrate bastards, all of them. Everyone here seems so stuck up in their own puny-little-mess-of-a-life to notice the struggle and effort of anyone else. I feel so alone out here, surrounded by an ocean of people, every single one of them alone in their own right...

03.01.18
Minimal raise. That is what I got at the end of the year. Minimal possible raise with no promotion. I am going mad, slowly but surely. Last night, I got into a bar fight. That tantrum-throwing, shouting and screaming drunk was definitely not me. This city is changing me. At this rate, I might start hearing voices in my head pretty soon. I feel like a part of wants to stay what I used to be, and they city took the rest and evolved into something new. I cannot carry on much longer...

28.02.18
Dear Diary! F*ck You!...

___

On birds and their species:

Historian # 1:

'[...] The "swifts" are a family of highly aerial birds. [...] from all I have observed and the other accounts I have read, it can be confidently stated that they have developed an amazing lifestyle of catching prey mid-flight. [...] for their negligible size of legs (or no legs at all, according to some accounts) these birds are referred to as "Apous" or footless. [...] Poppiri the hermit druid traced and followed a single Apous, finally to have given up his chase as the bird never landed, not even once in his three months of pursuit. "If I didn't need to, I wouldn't either, ever set foot on these tainted lands, and forever soar alongside angels; forever in flight..." concludes Poppiri.'

Historian # 2:

'[...] For all those who form a covenant with the devil are granted the gift of flight. They are to attend all gatherings, answer all summons and for their "lord", no is not an acceptable answer. What else would drive these little demons to fly endlessly without rest or food, but the fear of their master's punishment keeps them afloat. Be wary brethren, for you may never know which bird that flew by you, was indeed your neighbor's wife in her true form, speeding through the currents to meet her master. For her, no place on earth is too far to traverse to, if it meant kissing "his" feet again...'

On and about specters:

Historian # 1:

'There are certainly many recordings of bizarre and unexplained happenings in texts and scrolls of almost every country I have visited in my travels, events that cannot be explained without intervention of the supernatural forces; like maybe ghosts or specters of fiendish unseen creatures. But I must state this very clearly here that I have yet to witness any such being or event myself. All I have ever heard of this has always been accounts scribbled by someone who "heard it from a person who knew someone with a family member possessed". I also am willing to make a very bold statement here; perhaps these specters are mere incarnates of boredom and idleness. There is a pattern and a certain set of characteristics, that a town hosting them (those characteristics i.e.) has a higher chance of witnessing the supernatural.

I might've gone too far already, so I will stop myself here. But I will be keeping my skepticism till the time I myself become the prime witness of any such event.'

Historian # 2:

'The devil worshipers come in many types. But I like to divide them into two major groups namely the servants and the slaves. Servants are those who knowingly and willingly sell their soul to "diablo". These are the lowest of the low, the very worst of humankind. For their own personal and temporary gain, they forsake all that is good.

Slaves, on the other hand, are the ones who are possessed against their will. Some of these pour souls try to fight this invasion, but most of them simply give in, to avoid the torture demons inflict on their minds.

By virtue of birth, or of tireless effort (like I made), the gift of vividly seeing these slaver demons can be attained. Right alongside the rim of victim's body and face, they appear, creating a spectral image of themselves. You see them forcing words out of a victim, or making them do things no civil being would do. You cannot blame the victim in many such cases yet, the only cure is death...'

September the 30th

Historian # 1:

On the eve of September the 30th of the year 1639 of our era, I happened to pass by a small village. At the crossroads leading up to the village hung a young woman on a cross, signs of physical abuse and torture visible on her now rotting and bug-riddled body. As I saw this saddening display of barbarity I decided, against all my better judgement, to visit the village and interrogate the matter farther before forming an opinion and scribbling it down.

It was a strange and estranged little village. Their lifestyle, their clothing, their food, and even their language felt a little awry. They spoke in short sentences, using as few syllables as they could, and if forced to speak in full cohesive sentences, they almost always lost their trail of thought. Their dressing was primitive, with few to no stitched clothes as if they haven't discovered stitching yet. And everything they ate had this one particular ingredient (looked like a sort of fungus to me) I am not familiar with. Simply put, food there made me sick in the stomach and it tasted odd.

I couldn't really put my finger on what made the town so "queer"; I still can't; but as a seeker of truth, I had to investigate. So I did just that. What I could understand from the locals was: the woman at the crossing was a witch who willingly gave her soul to the devil and that they had sufficient "spectral evidence" to officially issue her demise. I didn't know what this "spectral evidence" was and upon my asking, they revealed that a group of young girls can see the people possessed. They point to the witches and they, the common folk, do not suffer them to live.

Before that day, I had always felt a certain pride that I was born in the age of ever growing wisdom and I thought that ignorance of such massive scales were all but extinct. But I was proven wrong that day. This too, like any other age is an age of darkness, when monsters swarm our civilization, and they look like men.

Historian # 2:

On the eve of September the 30th of the year 1639 of our era, I finally made my pilgrimage to the holy land of Sursi that birthed not one, or two, rather six gifted ones with the power to see specters naturally. It was an enlightening experience to say the least. The power of the gifted ones show its colors as soon as you reach the crossroads leading into the village. There, I saw hanged a wicked witch... I saw her true form, the bloody raven that she was... and I saw her specter, as clearly as I see the sun when it rises, right beside her, hanged to another noose.

To all the critics and skeptics, I implore them to visit Sursi just once, and the power of the gifted ones will reveal the truth to them. The truth, that one day, all mankind will acknowledge...

On earlier Historians:

Historian # 3:

Our ancestors have made the study of history extremely difficult. One single event is recorded by two different historians with such polar differences in their records that it is nigh impossible to objectively state anything as a matter of fact now. I think perspectives and prior convictions do play a role in shaping the way you view the world, but another factor is lifestyle. For example, this one historian lived all his life moving from one place to another, always on the move, observing and recording things as they happened. His elixir was his travels. Whereas this second one seldom left his room, always buried in his tomes, deriving history from his scrolls. His elixir was Ayahuasca...

“What he means is that he is glad he didn’t go ‘beast mode’
over your choice of place this time around” intervened Saalis, excited by the
fact that their vacations will not go to waste due to a poor choice of venue.
“This place is amazing!”

“No! More like I said, not half bad.” Said Kaleem, sticking
to his choice of words.

Shahid had always been the silent observer in their group,
who only parted with his opinions when directly asked for. If no one were to
show interest, he’d kept his thoughts to himself, even though, he might be the
one out of their gang who had the most experience in almost all things. Yet he
never found himself confident enough to force his opinion or experience over
anyone else’s. That is just the way he was.

Kaleem, on the other had was the talkative one, or should I
say the dominant one, or the wannabe “Alpha”, if you please. No matter what
someone brought to the table, Kaleem had something to say about it. You speak
of an achievement, Kaleem knows someone who has done it better. You talk of a
new technology, Kaleem “knew about it” years ago. And should you ever suggest a
place to visit, it is always “nothing” compared to what Kaleem has in mind. And
finally, Saalis is the bridge between the two.

But this time, for the first time in history of their
clique, when Shahid suggested a place to visit, Kaleem silently agreed. Strange
as it was; for Shahid spoke up without being asked, and Kaleem didn’t take a
shot on such a sitting duck; it happened. And here they all are now, not
regretting a single event from that oddity of events.

“I always had faith in your choice Shahid”, Janna finally
spoke. Janna being the only girl in their group of four, and being of foreign
descent, was very open to things our locals are not used to. Young, pretty,
bold and agreeable is how anyone would describe her. These properties alone are
enough to make any young man fall in love with her, and funnily enough, all
three of them secretly did.

A couple of years back, when she entered the class, that
very day Kaleem sort’a called dibbs on her pretty openly. He often expressed
his love, loud and clear for the whole varsity to listen, but always in a
funny, almost comical fashion. It was annoying for Janna in the beginning, but
when she slowly got to know the guys a little better, she just accepted it as
Kaleem’s “goof-ball” mode. It never occurred to her that he might actually be
serious.

This straightforward expression of Kaleem bound Saalis in an
unsaid honor-bond between friends. He could never express his feelings for her
without betraying one of his best friends. So he caught all those stray
feelings and locked them in a chest and threw it in the deepest pit of his
heart. Honestly, after two years, it was almost as if those feelings were never
real.

But Janna herself was secretly sweet on Shahid. Since he
never said anything about any such thing, Janna too was shy, and afraid to show
him the shape of her heart as well.

Back to the scene at hand. “I didn’t doubt him either. At
least, not this time around.” Kaleem giggled a little as he said this. “But I
am glad it went the way it did. There is something strangely calming and
peaceful about this place.”

“Let’s find a place to sit, shall we?” Saalis spoke up. “I
see benches in the back. Let’s just go sit there, relax, and we’ll leave in the
evening. Or not. Maybe we’ll just stay here forever.”

As they started walking towards the benches, they totally
missed out on the fact that Shahid was subtly pointing towards a different
place to sit. He had been here in the past quite a few times and he always sat
on the ground under the shade of a tree a little to the left from where the
vantage point is focused entirely on this huge autumn struck tree. To him,
staring at the tree for hours on brought some sort of inner bliss; the kind you
get when you meet a familiar soul.

Suddenly Kaleem said: “Wait! I might’ve spotted a better
place.” And he pointed towards the same place Shahid wanted to show them a
moment ago. Maybe he saw his subtle gesture, or maybe he spotted it by himself,
he’ll never know. As they arrived the place and examined the surroundings, they
unanimously agreed that this was a better choice than the benches.

“Well spotted Kaleem! You have a good eye.” As Jana
complimented Kaleem, Shahid knew he was the one who truly deserved it, yet he
said nothing. Although he would’ve loved to be complimented by Janna. But he
knew in his heart of hearts she’d never want to be with someone like him. She
only bears his presence for the sake of Kaleem.

“Thanks my love!” said Kaleem in his standard corny way.
“Although it’s not just one eye that’s good in me. Someday you’ll see.”

“Oh shut up!” Janna and Saalis both spoke up at the same
time.

“Focus on the view at hand.” Saalis continued. “Fill your
soul with it. You won’t get this opportunity every day.”

“I still can’t point out what it is, but something about this
place is hauntingly beautiful.” Said Kaleem. “I mean, I’ve been to places like
this before, but something here adds a strange melancholy to the mood and it is
oddly satisfying”.

Shahid wanted to shout: “It’s the tree! IT’S THE TREE!” but
he didn’t as it was merely his opinion. Maybe it was something else for others.
But to him this tree, that never sprouted green and always filled the scape
with autumn colors even in the spring, was the highlight of it all.

A couple of hours went by, some of that time in deep
thought, other in small talk, and now they all wanted a snack. So they all
walked up to the guy selling corn under the very same tree.

“What! Only 5 rupees apiece?” Janna was amazed when the guy
told them the price. She knew he could charge more. Everyone else was charging
at least quadruple to that. Kaleem ordered 4 pieces and gave the guy a 20 rupee
note. But Janna wanted to give him more. She also wanted to talk to him about
his faulty strategy and placement. She wanted to tell him that he can earn a
lot more if he moved closer to a market or housing, where there will be more
customers, and they will easily pay more for his merchandise. So she did tell
him all that. But he wasn’t very talkative. He too had that melancholy in his
eyes this whole place exhibited. But Janna told him her better strategy
nonetheless, to which he simply replied: “I’m perfectly fine right here.”

But why? Janna didn’t know. He didn’t seem much older than
them. Where were his youthful aspirations and dreams? What made him give up on
life so early in it? Why didn’t he even want to try? These were the questions
she threw at her companions as they walked back to their spot. It appeared that
for now, this is all she had in her mind. And as she went on about it, Shahid
kept thinking to himself how anyone could resist falling in love with such a
pure and compassionate heart, and how pathetically boring he was when compared
to her. His train of thought was interrupted by a loud strange sound and as
they all turned to look for its origin, they saw a child standing a little
farther back from the “corn guy”. It was clear by his looks and the sound he
made that the child was severely disabled, and the way the “corn guy” leaped up
and ran to the child to tend to whatever he needed showed that he was his son.
It was now clear to them why he was anchored to this place. And at that moment
Shahid realized how some trees are struck by autumn early and they never
recover, while others like himself wear it when convenient…

Theft

Sadaat: “A meadow? What’s a meadow?”

Saahir: “What’s a meadow? You say. Hmm! How do I describe
it? Well, for starters, meadows are the most beautiful places on earth. All of
them. But the one I’m taking you to is the king of all meadows.”

Sadaat: “But what is it that makes it a meadow? What will I
see there? Are there mountains? Rivers? Rainbows?”

Saahir: “Yes! All of it. Can you see what’s at the end of
this path?”

Sadaat: “Yes”

Saahir: “No you don’t. I bet you don’t see the secret
entrance to the meadow.”

Sadaat: “Wow, secret entrance? Like in Ben-10?”

Saahir: “Exactly like Ben-10, but this one is even better.
Because it’s real. And once you locate it, and speak the password, trees start
carving a new path, just for you. And they stand tall and high on either side
of the path, casting the coolest shadows you have ever seen. At the end of the
path is an open field, covered with emerald green grass, as tall as your knees,
and a soft breeze is always blowing, brushing those greens gently on your skin,
leaving a permanent tint on your soul. And on all four sides, just saving the
entrance itself, stand mighty tall mountains. They are very far away, yet they
appear so big, all covered in snow.”

Sadaat: “I don’t think I want to go there. I didn’t bring my
warm clothes, and I don’t like snow.”

Saahir: “Oh don’t worry. The meadow itself is very warm and
welcoming. And we are not climbing the mountains anyways. Even if we were, I
hear that snow on those mountains is magical. It is cold for those who want it
to be cold, and warm and cozy for those who like it that way. But sadly, we are
just going to cool our eyes by the river that bisects the meadow dead center.”

Sadaat: “Biscuits?”

Saahir: *Laughing “No! Not biscuits. Bisects. It means
dividing into two parts. You see, the river flows in a straight line, dividing the
meadow into two hemispheres, sorry, half circles. If you can find a rock or a
ledge to stand on, above the river, you see the wild raging river gushing all
around you, and as you follow your gaze straight up to the horizon, the river
appears to become thinner and thinner and at the end of your gaze, it vanishes into
a ditch that shines like a star.”

Sadaat: “But ditches are dark, mother told me.”

Saahir: “Not this one. Have you not figured out yet, that
everything in that place is special in its own unique way? Oh and the music and
melody that is ambient in that place is simply breathtaking. The sound of the
flowing river, the melancholy chimes of soft breeze through the tree leaves,
and the beautiful songs of birds and beasts.”

Sadaat: “Beasts? I don’t like animals. They smell and they
can also attack.”

Saahir: “Again! No one has ever seen any animal, bird or
beast in there. All they hear is their songs that the wind softly delivers to
your ears. That is the melody composed by the angels. Trust me, there is
nothing in this world that can beat that.”

Sadaat: “It all sounds good, but I think it will become
boring very soon. It is just a scenery that you keep looking at. You cannot do
it for long. I will get bored.”

Saahir: “But I haven’t even told you about the other side of
the river yet. You see, once you take the bridge to the other side, you find
yourself in the most illustrious joyland, with rides, and toys and games.”

Sadaat: “I have been to many joylands. But nothing is better
than the one in Fortress stadium.”

Saahir: “Is it now? Is the one in fortress stadium made of
candy? Because this one is. And if you want, you can eat it all, and no one will
say a word. It’s all made especially for you.”

Sadaat: “That is not true. It is not even possible.”

Saahir: “You’ll never know till you get there and see it for
yourself.”

Sadaat: “I guess so. Well, now I am excited to see this
place. How long till we get there Mr.? And I can’t wait to tell my father all
about it”…

Note: Thousands of children go missing every month, many of
which are stereotypical kidnappings by strangers. They often lure kids away
from their parents using things kids generally like, and once they are out of
sight, God only knows what becomes. Please teach your children to stay safe and
away from strangers. Prevention is better than the remedy.

Here are some social experiments done by others illustrating the same fact. Have a
look.

P.S. People shown in this picture are actually father and
son. This story is not intended to take a shot at them personally, rather, it
was a take on the visual scenario created. A kid with an older man, walking on a
path that leads to a darker end; and this story popped to mind. Again, no
insult or disrespect to the people in the picture was intended. Regards.

Perspective

He was born on the shore of an ocean so wide and endless,
that to him, it seemed to be the entirety of existence. He was born, just like
anyone else is born; not knowing the meaning of anything or any word, no
opinions polluting his thoughts, loving, joyful, wild and free.

As a young-ling, he never ventured far from his birthplace.
Not like there were many places to go to anyways. However far he ventured, all
that he had ever seen was the vastness of this limitless and mysterious ocean,
and a bright orange ball that appeared so far away, that it almost made the
vastness of the ocean seem like a fraction of the distance in between.

That ball always had some sort of power over all who gazed
upon it, even the mighty ocean was under its control. It even marked the ocean
with its own image, almost like a signature, stating its authority and
ownership over it.

He never traveled much, but the beauty of this strange
scenery, created by the master and the servant’s distant, yet undeniably strong
relationship, begged the question that who would ever want to go elsewhere? This
is where he was born, and this is where he will grow his knowledge and
acknowledgment of self. That is the way it was supposed to be, and that is the
way it happened.

When he finally recognized himself as an individual, he
often imagined himself to be like the ocean. Calm, as if nothing is ever able
to disturb his peace of mind, just like the ocean. Free, as if wherever he was,
that place belonged to him, and no one was there to contest it. Vast and
magnanimous, giving all that he could, for there was so much to give. It almost
seemed like a waste, the presence of so much resources and nearly not enough
users. And his thoughts and curiosity were just as vast, if not more, as the
ocean itself.

Other times, he imagined himself to be like the sun (the
name of the might ball, as he was told). There would have been none of this
were the sun not shining, just like himself, for how would this eloquent sight
exist had he not been living to witness it. Maybe he really was more like the
sun, for he truly felt to be the master, having signed his self on the vastness
of his personality. And no matter how distant he sometimes felt from it, he
always stayed the master.

Not very satisfied with “maybes”, he decided to explore his
own self, to finally be able to see what lies beyond the limits of his
personality. And then it dawned on him, that perhaps by travelling the
distance, and looking at the world from the other side, he will be able to understand
who he really is.

So he prepared for the departure, and towards the unknown he
departed. All this water did not bother him, for if he had to, he could swim
through the rest of his life with ease. And the ocean, mysterious as it may be,
was not intimidating for him. That job belonged to the sun. Even though he
thought himself to be like the sun sometimes, but he didn’t really know the sun
up-close and personal, did he? He only made guesses of what it ought to be.

But now that he was on his way, he would resolve this
mystery once and for all. He would face the sun one on one and decide who truly
the master is. “What if the outcome is not in his favor? What will become of
him then?” This thought fill him with deep and terrifying fear. But he cannot allow
fear to limit his vision, or freeze him in his tracks. He cannot allow a simple
thought to hinder all the possible discoveries out there. If there ever was a
time for him to be like the ocean, unaffected and uninfluenced by remote
thoughts, it was now.

Thus he became one with the ocean, and kept swimming on and
on for what seemed like a good half of his entire life. Never tired, never
giving up, eyes always on the prize. But even after such long turmoil, the
ocean’s other end was nowhere to be seen. This started to dampen his spirits a
little bit. After all, he was not getting any younger. And when he started to
feel his vitality noticeably lower than before, he decided to tune his goal.

It was already pretty eminent that he was no match for the
sun, so he no longer aimed to show the sun what for. Instead, all he wanted now
was to feel, even if for a moment, what it is like to be the sun. He just
wanted to swim up to the place where the sun marked the ocean, and bathe in
that brilliance for a while.

He carried on with all that he had got, eyes now focused on
the new prize, but the prize seemed to be moving towards him with a slower pace
than his demise. He felt it inside him that he was now dying, that his life was
slowly leaving him but the place where sun meets the ocean seemed as far as
ever.

“Maybe it is just a few strokes away” he thought to himself,
“maybe I am just not seeing it clearly, after all, my vision is not what it
used to be”. So he gathered all his remaining energy, and gave it a one last
go. There was something special in this last effort. He felt that as he moved
towards the place where sun and the ocean met, the place also slowly started
moving towards him. “Almost there!” he thought, about to burst with joy, “Just
a few strokes more!”…

And then, a terrifying loud crackling sound arose, as if the
sky itself was torn asunder, followed by heavy thumping sounds, like massive
boulders were falling from that tear in the sky. To him, it sounded like such,
but in reality, it was just Ahmed, who opened the door of his room, clothed in
a sports kit, reeking with sweat, pacing towards his study desk by the window.

A distant feminine voice followed all this “storm”: “Ahmed!
I told you to be home before sundown.”

Ahmed: “MAA! It isn’t sundown yet! Stop yelling.”

Ma: “Well, it almost is, and I am not yelling. Hey! There’s
water on your desk, just by the window in the earthen bowl you love so much.”

“Thanks Ma!” replied Ahmed, as he picked the bowl up and
gulped all the water down in one go. “Can I have more?”

Volition

They were thirteen or maybe fourteen, but definitely not
fifteen. Sitting cozily in their spots, protected by the shell they were born
in; the same place where they die. And too often it is that they die, just to
revive again in the same spot, engulfed in the warmth of their own existence. The
warmth, these little pixies of light spread as much as their immobile nature
allows.

What better way can there be to exist? Safe, warm, cozy and
most of all, generous. It is to their credit alone, that the passerby of this
little cave is actually able to pass by. And when he enters this cave, he
enters the sanctuary of shimmering luminescence, granted the gift of vision for
the duration of his journey through. Such magnanimity truly is remarkable. So
they all thought and lived by, till the day one didn’t.

“I want to leave”, said Luna (the one on the left near the
entrance).

It was visibly a strange day for Luna. She seemed to be
shining brighter than usual. Maybe she had something else burning inside her,
other than her usual glow. Or maybe it was just the vintage point of the viewer
that made her look brighter than she actually was.

“I don’t understand what you mean”, said Maya (opposite to
Luna), riddled with confusion.

“I mean, I want to leave this place and explore what is out
there”, as Luna uttered these words, she grabbed the attention of all fourteen
(or thirteen).

“There is nothing out there Luna”, spoke one of the elders
(elders shine upwards while everyone else shine down). “How many lifetimes have
you spent safely in here, only to disrespectfully deny today, all good that was
given to you? How many more will it take to make that fact concrete once again?”

“There was no disrespect in my intent. I merely want to
explore the possibilities that are out there”, Luna replied, taken aback a
little by how misunderstood her words were.

“So you want to die forever? Because that is what leaving
here means”, Maya angrily chiseled through her sentence.

“How do you know that?” snapped Luna. “Have you ever done it
before? Who here can speak with certainty, of the permanent demise of those who
leave? Who here can speak from experience? Or do we all, forever speculate of
things we know not?”

Floura, the eldest of them all, now dim with age but bright
with wisdom, was silent to this point. But now she had to interfere. So she
asked Luna, in her mellow loving voice: “what do you expect to find out there
child?”

Luna: “I don’t know…”

Maya: “Why am I not surprised?” (Sarcastically cutting
Luna’s sentence short).

Floura: “Hush child! Let her explain”.

Luna: (now a little annoyed by Maya’s snide remarks) “as I
was saying, I don’t really know what is out there, and what I will find; but
that is exactly what makes it such an adventure”.

“What makes you think your adventure will be a pleasant
one?” said Floura, kindness still dripping from her voice, but this time, mixed
with a hint of pity.

“Oh I am positive it will not merely be pleasant”, said
Luna, excitement now gushing in her beams, “It’s going to be magical!”

Maya: “I’m still waiting for the incoming explanation!”

Luna, now completely disregarding Maya, continued: “remember
when that beautiful girl passed from this cave? Do you remember the lovely gown
she was wearing? Oh the flurry of colors she bore on her bosom, and the petite
stars on her gown’s fall that glittered in our light. How awe-struck we all
were at the beauty that graced us that night? I remember it vividly, but do
you?”

Maya: “What’s your point in all this?”

Luna: “I am certain she is not the only beauty out there.
For all we know, the world can be overwhelmingly filled with such, or even
greater beauties”.

Floura: “But my child, witnessing one pretty thing doesn’t
make the world pretty”.

Luna: “But it isn’t the only thing of beauty I saw. Just the
other day, when none of you had revived from your slumber, a couple passed
through here, with an infant in the woman’s lap. They were trying to talk to
this little child when he clearly wasn’t able to. You all slept through it, but
I saw it happen, right in front of me; the child vaguely muttered his first
word: ‘Da-Da!’ In that moment, happiness in the parents’ eyes shone bright.
Maybe even brighter than any of us ever did.”

Maya: “This is preposterous! You expect us to believe
anything you throw at us and just blindly agree with you? It’s easy to make
anything up if no one else has seen it.”

Luna: “You don’t believe me? Fine! But do you believe in
what you saw with your own eyes? Do you recall the juggler that stood right
there, in front of us, performing amazing feats of acrobatics and magic? He had
a massive crowd filled with applause and cheer, yet his biggest fan was not out
there. She was in here, sitting right in front of me, gaze locked at the
performer, lost in imagination for hours on, even after the event. I want to
find more of these amazing people, and things, and smells and tastes. Memories
that will forever make me their captive.”

An awkward silence grew under that dome, till finally Floura
shattered it. “We have heard your case child! We will commune before passing
our decision.”

So they all talked and discussed, for hours on, trying to
decide either to deny or grant Luna their blessings to leave and explore. After
what seemed like a lifetime of discussion, Floura declared that Luna has their
permission to leave.

“Really!?” exclaimed Luna, filled with a massive surge of
excitement. “I shall prepare for it right away. What shall I take with me? What
will help me survive?” And she thought by herself: “Will I even survive? How
will I even travel? Is it wise to leave at this moment? Shall I even leave?
Because it’s really cold outside…”
Hello everyone and welcome to

Before we went into properly publishing stuff on this blog, I thought it would be a good idea to write a post explaining what we plan on doing around here.

As you all can see, the blog is named "A Thousand Words". It is a direct extract from the famous proverb "A picture is worth a thousand words". We just picked that idea up and will try and apply it, just like that. Every week (or at least we will try and make it every week), we will select a picture from the galleries of our many awesome photographer friends (with their permission, of course), and write a story around it.

We have set a few rules and formats for ourselves for the purpose of this blog though. They are as follows:

1. What we write should be roughly around a thousand words. It can be more or it can be less, as per requirement, but it should be somewhere in that vicinity.

2. It must always be fiction. We are not trying to be critical about the picture. We are not trying to discuss it. We are not scrutinizing it. We are trying to build a short story around that picture, that either physically, or symbolically relates to it. Again. This Is Not An Art Study blog.

3. The fiction we write must be neutral. We don't want to write anything that aggressively tries to push an opinion on the readers. What we want is to create a mildly suggestive, imaginative and fantastic (i.e. fantasy based, not awesome; although it totally can be, but is not implied by the word here :) reading material.

Now that we have the rules, what if I tell you that the proverb we take our name from, cannot be more wrong? A picture is not really worth a thousand words. It is worth a several thousands. Some pictures may even be worth hundreds of thousands of words. But we being frail, weak and limited beings can only say so much. Our words run dry a lot sooner than we'd wish.

What we will do is that we will write 2 stories per picture then. One in English, and will be captioned in the title as "A Picture's Worth"|"Title of the story". The second one in Urdu, captioned as "The flip side"|"Title of the story". Both versions will be written by different authors, hence will be wildly varied stories.

Currently, for "A Picture's Worth" (i.e. English stories) will be written by Muhammad Abdullah Khalid (me). And for "The Flip Side", Naveed Arshad will be presenting his pieces. We are not professional writers, and don't really have much experience writing. But we are starting here. If we are currently the worst, then the good news is that we can only move up from here. Let's hope this little practice of ours brings maturity in our words. And your constructive criticism will always be the best tool of improvement for us.

But this doesn't end here. If you find yourself inspired and want to write your own little fiction based on that picture, then you can for sure write it and share it in the comments. If you want a proper post made out of it, then you can send us the story, and if it fits (according to us), we will certainly be happy to make a post, fully giving credit to you and linking it to where ever you want it linked (like your social media, or some other platform you want to bring up).

In the end, let's all have a good time, enjoy the stories, and learn as much as we can in the process together.

Good Day!
