Estonians in Australia have made a name for themselves in many fields of endeavour. They fought for Australia in World War I and II, represented Australia in the Olympic Games, and have contributed to industry, business, the professions and the academic sphere.

Terry Kass has been a consultant historian since 1983, specialising in heritage and conservation work in conjunction with architects, archaeologists and planning professionals. He was team manager for Heritage Studies of the local government areas of Bankstown, Canterbury, Rockdale and the City of Parramatta. He was principal consultant for the North Coast Regional Heritage Study for the NSW Department of Planning,. Terry has given evidence at court cases involving development sites or planning issues as an expert witness on historical matters. A founding member of the Professional Historians’ Association, NSW, formed in 1984, Terry was President of the Association from 1989 to 1992 and remains active in that organisation.

As a consulting historian writing commissioned histories, he has published several books, articles and discussion papers relating to cities and places in NSW.
An article titled ‘Estonians in Australia – 300 Years and More!’ appeared in Global Estonian, Tallinn, Estonia, 2000. In 2009 Terry presented a paper “A Romp through the Records- The story of Julius Alfred Sickler” at the BaltHernet conference in Tartu and the Maritime Museum, Sydney. Julius Sickler was the first Estonian to be naturalized in NSW.

During his career, Terry has written several extensively researched and beautifully written and illustrated books including

Parramatta: A Past Revealed, (joint author with Carol Liston and John McClymont), National Trust Heritage Award 1997.

Sails to Satellites: The Surveyors General of NSW (1786-2007),

Jewels in the Crown: A History of the Bridge Street Plan Room and Crown Plans, Phyllis Mander Jones Award , Australian Society of Archivists 2008.

Grafton – Jacaranda City on the Clarence: A History,

Terry’s publications are held in the Estonian Archives , Estonian House Sydney and can be consulted on Wednesdays when the archive is open.
As Chairman of the Estonian Archives in Australia Council and a Director of the Estonian House Co-operative Society, Terry has made a substantial contribution to the Estonian community for many years.

In May this year, Terry was awarded a PhD by University of Technology, Sydney for a thesis entitled “Queen City of the North, A History of Grafton, Capital of the Clarence 1837-2009”.

We congratulate Terry on his academic achievement and wish him success for the future.

Paks Teisipäev was a new concept previously not heard of in any Estonian community but billed as a natural evolution for Australian Estonians. This was Esto Pub Night 9, our tribute to the Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday which a relaxed occasion prior to Lent. February the 19th though was also the start of the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the weekend prior to the Estonian Independence Day celebration. Hence Thomas Sarapuu’s team of fantastic volunteers was expecting a quiet intimate evening, of local Adelaide Estonians and their close friends, which has previously made this, such an exciting event in the lives of the Adelaide community.

Despite this and the two new air conditioner units attempting to emulate the February Estonian weather, the enthusiasm was overwhelming. A great crowd attended once again. The weather was warm but Kristina Lupp responded to the usual difficult challenge. Maimu Mölder a senior administrator of the Estonian Foundation of Canada recently emailed enquiring about her where-abouts not to mention we have been fielding enquiries from other Australian states. Adelaide, though had secured her services and there was again an enthusiastic flood of early arrivals ready to taste the fabulous dish. Her team fired up the Barbeque and the Pork Spare Ribs along with her traditional potato and bean salad was an absolute treat. Finally Adelaide’s most respected critic was present and was elaborate in her praise. Personally I was again impressed with the great service and quality for a very reasonable ten dollars.

Later in the evening our new undercover bakery chef’s identity was finally revealed. Astrid Tuul may be a shy individual and her Banana Tort was rumoured to be a sensation but now has now become an institution. This along with a small glass of Vana Tallinn rounded out an incredible culinary evening. Astrid don’t be too concerned, we will all keep it as our secret especially from the Adelaide Naisring!

The entertainment this time centred around the bar staff who certainly “dressed” for the occasion A big thank you to Tom, Alex and Matt to the hard work throughout the evening and we hope you didn’t freeze in your Mardi Gras outfits. We were very pleased to see for the first time here in Adelaide a representative from the Sydney Honorary Estonian Consulate fitting in perfectly with the Adelaide Esto Pub Night ethos of all being welcome and dropping in. Again the Estonian Back Packers had heard of the evening and it was good to see Mai and Lachlan Bell return to Adelaide. Mai with her Computer Programming experience was heard again discussing the possibility of South Australia being the Southern Hemisphere’s Silicon Valley.

We would like to thank Maia Dyke and the delightful ladies of the Adelaide Naisring committee as without their support via provision of the kitchen and facilities we would not be as successful. Thank you to all those involved. In appreciation Kristina Lupp has agreed to coordinate what we have all been waiting for -the first Adelaide Estonian Wine and Food event on Saturday the 17th of April. We are all looking forward to tasting Kristina’s Estonian specialities. This event will be limited and bookings will be required. Further details will be available very shortly.

The next Esto Pub Night, is also just around the corner. Esto Pub Night 10, the Estovision Night will be back by popular demand. A video link to the Estonian entrant will be shown so pencil Friday May the 28th into your diary. The usual great meal, cheap drinks and excellent atmosphere make this, another evening not to be missed. So drop in after work or stay for the evening!

Richard Semenov & Kristina Martinson

Adelaide 27 – 31 December 2010

We would like to invite you to a classic Australian Estonian event, first launched in 1954, that we have the pleasure to host here in Adelaide. This is the first of a series of articles that will detail our program for the festival, give some insight into the tradition of how it has evolved and explain the intense desire and attraction of why the new Estonians here in Australia are all attracted to Adelaide! We will outline the events on offer along with the newer more modern approach to this amazing tradition.

The senior members of the Adelaide “Eesti Selts”, along with the members of previous Adelaide Australian Estonian Festivals called a meeting back in January of 2009. This was an emergency meeting and the questions were put forward was it possible to host another Australian Estonian Festival here in Adelaide? The results of this meeting were monumentally significant as the Council Australian Estonian Societies were about to meet and the obvious questions about Adelaide’s manpower and size of the community were to be addressed, by our larger Melbourne and Sydney Estonian cousins.

I was fortunate enough to host this meeting in my gardens, in true Adelaide fashion we had fabulous warm January day. Everyone enjoyed a great BBQ, a swim and a sensible discussion about the history here in Adelaide. We had a discussion about previous successful Eesti Päevad here in Adelaide, the overwhelming local support, national interest and not to mention a reminder about the inexpensive venues and the financial success of previous festivals.

It was a simple decision to accept the responsibility to host this tradition and we here in Adelaide are proud to again host this historically successful event. Iivo Tuul called many subcommittee meetings and has managed to establish a committee that has a broad range of experience. For the first time, this event crosses many age groups and includes all communities, in this small city with a tradition of hosting festivals. The committee certainly is solid and is putting together a festival that has fielded many enquiries and offers of support, even from those that have not been involved for decades.

Adelaide “Came Alive in 95” with the Grand Prix but again it has been re- Established with the Esto’s in 2010. Anneliis and Kadri have taken the first step in forming the first Australian Estonian under seventy year old Sega-Koor, Matt Harm has taken the Folkdancing group to new levels and the Esto Pub Night Organization, who everyone has already heard of, is moving forward to establishing a club room culture that is warm and friendly, relaxed and approachable for all those attending! The Naisring here in Adelaide has come to the party and has involved a Canadian Estonian and the entire team of small committees has pooled their funds to modernize the hall and cater for what is required for future functions and a successful Festival.

The Estonian Contingent is in a supporting role, along with the mighty Sõrve Organization is providing immense support. Names like Ivo Linna , Eda-Ines, Silver Lumi, RAAAM theatre and others may have little meaning for us Aussies but their reputations are spectacular and those true Estonians living here in Australia will need no further prompts to appreciate their talent.

Yes, Adelaide is hosting the next Australian Estonian Festival and I firmly believe this is the Eesti Päevad or Estonian Festival that should be thought of as the one that should not be missed

Richard Semenov
