Your access to dictionaries

About a year ago, Aalborg University Library held an election to see which of our main foreign language dictionaries our users preferred: Gyldendal Online or Ordbogen.com. The result of the election would cause the library to cancel a large portion of our subscription to Ordbogen.com. However, recent negotiations with Ordbogen.com have led to a new agreement and a new solution.

Use ebrary on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Ebrary, who supplies the library with a vast amount of e-books, has launched an application for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that gives you access to their e-books.

Favourites, saved searches etc. will be deleted

From 1 January 2012, the search engine of the library will be moved from its current host, the Royal Library in Copenhagen, to independent hosting at Ex Libris. Unfortunately, this means that saved favourites, saved searches and search agents will not be available after 31 December 2011. You will have to recreate them.

New remote access login

The library has made the switch to the new AAU Access Control login system. This means that you have to use your official AAU e-mail address and matching password when you use our remote authentication system.

Change of email addresses for students

The university is about to change its communication practice, so that all future communication will be directed to your official AAU email address. Likewise, the library will automatically change all student email addresses to official AAU addresses. The change will take place this week.

Changes in wifi and VPN handling

Power Cut at the Main Library on 6 July

Due to renovation of the electricity panels at the main library at Langagervej in Aalborg, there will be a number of power cuts from 4th to 8th July. On 6th July there will be a complete all-day power cut, with the exception of our virtual services.

Sage Publications is in the process of converting a vast number of reference works into digital form. The reference works are high quality introductions and entries from the Humanities and Social Sciences primarily. Most of them are available at the library in paper and are frequently used! Now, thirty-one of these reference works are available electronically.

Result of the Dictionary Battle 2010

We are happy to announce the result of the Dictionary Battle 2010. We decided to ask the users whether we should subscribe to Ordbogen.com or The Red Dictionaries from Gyldendal in the future. The result of the battle was in favour of Ordbogen.com. However, other factors have had to be taken into account as well. The final result is that AUB has decided to keep its subscription to the most frequently used dictionary from Ordbogen.com, as well as the special dictionaries, while at the same time taking out a subscription to the Red Dictionaries from Gyldendal.

Misuse of the Library’s Online Resources

Aalborg University Library buys and provides access to articles, e-books etc. from publishers, who demand payment for online access to their resources. We do so to secure that researchers, teachers and students at AAU can use high quality tools and resources in their search for information. Legally speaking, Aalborg University Library is responsible for the use of these online resources according to the licence agreements that hold numerous and clear restrictions regarding use. However, in the early summer of 2010 things went wrong. This is the story about why you should handle your username and password with great care.

3.500 new e-books

Aalborg University Library has just reached an agreement with Springer Publishers about access to an additional 3500 e-books. It covers Springers entire collection of e-books in English from 2005 until 2010.

Further extension of opening hours at Langagervej

For almost a year, the main library at Langagervej 2 has had extended opening hours in the evening from 17:30 to 21:00, however without staff. Evening opening hours have been quite popular among our users, and thus we have decided to extend evening opening hours with one hour.

New version of VBN is launched

The VBN editorial office is happy to announce that we are airborne with a new version of VBN based on Pure 4. Today we are launching a new portal for both VBN and the Project Library. The new version will offer advancements and improvements for the end user when it comes to functionality and graphic interface. The goal is to have a research portal that communicates research from AAU dynamically and in a modern design that is in line with the common design policy.

Downloads from VBN almost doubled

During 2009 the VBN Editorial Office has done a big effort when it comes to research registration and student project registration. 2009 was also the year when open access was one of the focus areas. And this pays of, since the number of download of both research publications and student projects has almost doubled in 2009 compared to 2008.

Trial access to Thieme (medicine)

Thieme are known as one of the serious publishers of books about medicine. One of their famous publications are the books “Color atlas of …”. Many students use these books and that is why the library has chosen to give trial access to the e-book collection from Thieme.

DR Webcam Studio at the library

The TV-programme Deadline 17 at the TV station DR2 has recently been relaunched and is now based on a new concept that ensures that the programme is in direct contact with viewers all over the country. As part of this strategy, DR and Aalborg University have teamed up and established a webcam studio at Aalborg University Library to give researchers and students easy access to go live on Deadline 17.

19.000 ebooks from Springer

Aalborg University Library has bought access to e-books from Springer’s English title stock list from 2005-2009. As such, the library gives access to more than 19.000 e-books from Springer. The books represent almost all subject areas, although the main emphasis is on technical- and natural science titles.

These are key reasons why Aalborg University Library has taken out a subscription to McGraw-Hill’s AccessScience – Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Online. The encyclopedia contains articles, news and definitions on a wide range of subjects within the fields of engineering, natural- and social sciences.

AUB as JSTOR supplier

The JSTOR database contains core journals within all subject areas and reach back as far as the first year of publication. JSTOR is a non-profit collaboration between a number of North American and British universities and publishing houses. Aalborg University Library has become an established supplier of paper journals to JSTOR, who in turn secures online access through digitisation.

Exhibition by Jørgen Nash at Langagervej

Jørgen Nash (a famous Danish artist, 1920-2004) has often been referred to as a controversial artist. One of the more spectacular moments of his career was when he admitted to be behind the decapitated the statue of The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen back in 1964. The exhibition at Langagervej does however not hold any decapitated mermaids, but a collection of lithographs etc.
