2. Attendance: How many times late? How many classes missed? (be accurate)

I have never been late to this class, I have a class in the building next door so I’m always there early. I have missed one class so far, I told you prior that my grandma has been sick. She will be having a surgery soon, meaning, if I miss any more classes it is due to the fact that I will be back in Glendale taking care of her if my parents are not able to. The doctors also said the mortality rate at her age and circumstances are very high right now, so I have been spending as much time as possible with her.

3. 1st Digital Film: Name and Describe (how long? how did you edit it? in what format? on what day did you show it?) Provide your youtube or google video link here.

“From Ashes to Belief” is the name of my video and it is about the terrorists hijacking the airplanes and crashing them into the world trade center buildings. The movie shows multiple clips of religions combined with the event that is portrayed. I edited it using ulead. It was originally in VSP format, but I converted it to FLV in order to get it up online into youtube.

4. To read or not to read, that is the question: Be honest. How much of the following book did you read? Not a Genuine Black Man? Required readings from the Reader?

I read the whole book, Not a Genuine Black Man. It is really easy to read and funny, which makes it even easier to read. I didn’t read that many from the Reader, I didn’t have that much extra time during the week with all my other classes. I go home on Thursdays and once I am there, nothing gets done, I become nurse Erin for the weekend.

5. Give an example of a "consilience" explanation to one specific religious phenomenon (e.g., why do people worship snakes, etc.). Be sure to choose your own example.

The concept of “concilience” was that anything that had some sort or religious or mystical background to it could be explained thru biology by using reductionism to interpret this phenomenon. I remember an example from one of my friends stories of this one movie, Evan Almighty, that had related to Noah’s Arc and the great flood. In the movie, Evan incurs God’s wrath so there is a many animals following this congressman in the city and everyone is beginning to think he is crazy, especially when he starts to look like Moses. When the massive flooding in the city begins, and everyone is forced onto the boat, they believe it’s a miracle. When they all pray and are saved they believe that it was God sparing them. People in the city think about how the dam broke and it just so happened that Evan had built an arc, it was inevitable. Scientists have done studies about climate conditions in ancient times in the Middle East and speculate that there was once a huge flood that occurred which created the story about the Arc. The flood most likely occurred to a similar situation or that they cut down areas of trees which held back massive amounts of water, and when it rained there was nothing to absorb the water coming down the hills and resulted in a heavy flood in the valleys and almost the white house.

6. How can the theory of memetics help in understanding WHY certain religions are more successful than others (in terms of popularity) in the USA? Be sure to explain how memes are different than genes.

Memes and genes are different because genes replicate from generation to generation, meaning each generation has the genes from lets say your parents to you yourself. Memes, on the other hand, can be transferred amongst 2 different people where one can transfer their ideals/memes to any unlimited number of peoples. Because of people spreading their memes, it attributes to why some religions are more successful than others because they have people that believe and want to follow in the ways. In doing so, spreading the word makes it succeed amongst the rest and cause more people to pick it up and spread it even more, and the more believers a religion has, the more popular and advertised it becomes, which causes it to grow even more so.

7. Describe how evolutionary theory (via natural selection as first presented by Charles Darwin and later by Richard Dawkins) helps in understanding human migration, cultural development, and social identity. (Think of evolutionary psychology).

People were in search of a new life where there was plentiful food, security, a better way of life. In having to find this, they migrated and had to get used to their new surroundings. Natural selection assures that the best of the best are the most able to adapt when moved to new surroundings. The ones, who can’t live out of their old culture and be able to take up new ways of living, will not make it. Even ones keeping on with the culture, will shift it over time and become their new identity that they pass down to next generations.

8. Why is the notion of "race" biologically obsolete, yet culturally viable? (hint: difference between "nature" and "nurture"... or biology vs. sociology)

The notion of race is biologically obsolete because we’re all from the same area—Africa. Our genetic makeup also shows that there is no such thing as “race” because our genes are all similar with nothing that states what race, ethnicity, and color we are. The term is a more practiced cultural thing that people adopted and separated themselves into different groups. These different groups began to look similar so we created names like Asians, Whites, Arabs, African-Americans…etc. This has become something sociologically placed in our hands that has become the norm when, in actuality, we are all mixes of all different influences. The norm has been practiced and put into the general education for young children that things will never change. It is the same even when dealing with gender, a man will always make more than a woman, part of the Davis and Moore theory—theory states that more of gender plays role than race, women usually make less than men. They basically are saying that sex is biological, and gender is sociological.

9. Explain how a religious idea/ritual/ practice gets transformed in American soil. For ex: I described how circumcision evolved from a religious ritual (from Egyptian to Judaic to Islamic) into a routinely performed medical procedure. This is a tougher question than you might suspect. Think before you leap. You want to describe how a religious idea/ritual/ practice CHANGES in a North American environment. You can draw from ANY religion for your developmental example. Be sure, though, that it is YOUR example.

Easter is a very big Christian holiday that is greatly followed/celebrate. Over many years it has gone through many changes since it was first celebrated here in America. The holiday exists as a mark of the day that Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. This concept is still the main concept of the holiday, but it has been changed to make it more general for all whether we are Christian or not; this can be mostly seen with the figure of the Easter Bunny. We recognize the symbol of a bunny delivering colored eggs full of candy to children; this figure was brought into Christianity from old pagan cultures in England around the second century. There, they used to have a spring festival of Saxon fertility that celebrated the Saxon Goddess Eastre whose sacred animal was a hare—a bunny rabbit. This eventually helped the name of the holiday to become what it is today—Easter. The Easter egg comes from a few other areas such as Rome and Greece, whose traditions included a Vernal festival in the spring where eggs symbolized fertility, rebirth, and abundance. The concept of a rabbit giving colored eggs to children to delight them was a German tradition that was carried over to the United States and over time all of these traditions fused into what we now celebrate as Easter.

10. Explain Peter Berger's concept of the "heretical imperative" (hint: think of class lecture: deductive, reductive, inductive) and how it applies to religious pluralism in general.

Peter Berger’s concept of heretical imperative is about the three options individuals have when it comes to religion. The deductive, affirms the same religion regardless of the plausibility of other religions; the reductive, mutates it in ways that are suitable for the present time; and the inductive, bases beliefs on personal experience. Peter Berger believes that the way to pluralism is inductive because it allows people to grasp the idea other religions.

11. Take ONE new religious movement (any religion founded after the 16th century CE) and describe, in brief, its influence in North America. Use hypertext when necessary.

A religion that has come into existence in the last several hundred years and held significance in America is Mormonism which is also known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This religion has actually only been around for the last two hundred years and have gained strong followers in such a short time. Some of their views and beliefs are very unusual. It was founded in New York in the 1830’s by a man named Joseph Smith Jr. He believed that during his religious discovery as a youth he had a significant experience where God spoke to him and gave him the truth of existence. He then formed a church to preach his ideas. Once he moves to a church in Ohio, his followers did not exactly agree with his ideas completely and then began to split apart on their differences. The modern day Mormons moved to Utah and began creating their own communities where they practiced their beliefs. Mormons believe that there are many Gods and that our god was once human on a distant planet. The person/god was so pure that the god of that planet took the mortal and made him into God, who had the status and ability to create his own world to nurture or create another god to follow in his place. Mormonism state that there are infinite planets with Gods and that they have been moving new gods to new planets traveling infinite distances over time yet though it the distance is infinite it could never be reached. We would never get there or could ever get there making me wonder how they even came up with this concept. There are also many aspects where they believe that the Book of Mormon existed long before the religion even began which makes no sense. Mormonism is a uniquely interesting branch off of Christianity.

12. How would Nietzsche describe the "death" of God and the rise of new religions?

Nietzsche would describe the “death” of God and the rise of new religions as happening because of his own personal experiences where people were letting go of their heavy Christian backgrounds, and exploring new beliefs and boundaries. He also says that the new religions people were worshiping, are earth bound religions. He also believes that instead of laying in wait for the eternal life, man should celebrate life on earth which will lead to courageous life on earth. Nietzsche also says that this energy for courageous/passion can be used creatively to expand man’s natural capacity.

13. How does Stephen Wolfram's "new kind of science" support Stephen Jay Gould's notion of spandrels or unintended consequences/ complexities? Hint: think of how complexity is the result of simpler computational- like programs.

Steven Wolfram’s “new kind of science” believed that all the complexity and chaotic complexities in the universe is actually very simple. He believed that all this complexity can be explained by a few simple algorithms which were the source of the entire universe’s original existence. That caused everything to expand exponentionally and by following this algorithm created what exists today. It is a random chance of organization but is structured in a way that it must follow this algorithm on how everything forms.

14. Why does religious "diversity" almost always start with its founder? Explain in detail your answer.

The main reason religion is so diverse is because different people interpret ideas differently so when one person tries to teach the other about someone else’s word—god’s word—the person might find that they had changed something, or the religion would be better off in some other way by starting their own. In fact, most religions start in this manner, and with freedom of speech almost all religions have started because their maker was unsatisfied with the religion they were brought up in or practiced. Most likely, the base of their religion is from the one they once practiced. The founder of the new regions is the one that decides to deviate from the norm and start his own religion.

17. What was the tipping point in Brian Copeland's life which prompted him to want to commit suicide?

There could be one of two reasons, because his son was dealing with racism or he wanted to protect him or that he didn’t wasn’t to commit suicide, but something like it. Like a slow death to think about it, but not really carry it out.

18. What were the more "subtle" forms of racism that Brian encountered when growing up in San Leandro?

I think some more forms of discrimination were not all that subtle and I can kind of see right through them in the sense that being bullied at school based on color, or like a eper in second grade, or being accused of harassing people with a bat are not that subtle. Kids are cruel, the only thing that hides is the discrimination the people hold against Brian and other people of color. People are out to get those of which they do not understand or want to accept whom are different from them. Just as in sociology, what breaks the norm and is deviant, cannot be right, therefore is wrong and should be made known. The time Brian was excited about the merit badge in Boy Scouts, and how the counselor nonchalantly ignored the entire situation, shows that mental well being are at stake due to people relying on their stereotypes. Boy Scouts is an honor, and to merit in something is huge, for someone to brush it off is unacceptable just because they are a different color.

19. How does Brian's experience of racism dovetail with the experiences of Malcom X? How are they different?

Brian and Malcolm had very similar experiences growing up being young black men back in those days where the color of the skin made such a difference. Even to this day, still has not changed. Both Brian and Malcolm also didn’t really have a very good guides/teachers in their lives—fathers. Father figure can help direct a boy in more ways than a mother ever could. There are just things women can not know that men teach their sons. They missed out on big learning part of their early lives. Not having a man to look up to growing up and dealing with stereotypes and discrimination. Not only that but Malcolm X converted into Islam where he became an African American Muslim minister under the great teachings of Elijah Muhammed—the leader of Islamic Nation. Brian also did things not of the norm of a typical black man, like played video games like Star Trek and listen to Beach Boys. Totally deviating from the norms society has placed different races as being.

22. What is the Native American Church of Jesus Christ? How did it evolve?

The Native American Church of Jesus Christ is a church that utilizes Peyote cactus during rituals when they commune with the spirits, it was also used as a strong natural antibiotic. An Indian called Quana Parker was mortally injured in a battle with federal troops (around 1890). He was saved by Carrizo Coahuilatecan Indians in south Texas who had administered this peyote cactus and subsequently taught him the proper way to run peyote ceremonies. He reportedly had a vision of Jesus Christ during this process. In 1924 they formally organized the church and put the Bible as the head instrument. Moreover, the peace pipe has been set aside and replaced by the Bible. Nevertheless, the Native American Church feels that God put peyote/medicine on this earth for “Indians to find” and knowing the history of this church and name itself, there is the religion called the peyote religion that was adopted and has evolved into a church that is incorporates both ancient ritual and Judeo Christian teachings. 24. What are the major differences between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., when it comes to liberating blacks from oppression?

Martin Luther King was different that Malcom X because he had a more subtle way of trying to free blacks from oppression and did not believe in using force, civil disobedience and/or violence; Malcom X believed, on the other hand, that using aggression, aloofness, coercion would help liberate the blacks form oppression. Martin Luther King also differed in the sense that he would push the non-violence issue by going to non-violent marches. Malcolm X believed in the use of aggression, separatism and the use of force in the liberation of blacks from oppression.

25. Why is genealogical dissociation a key factor in understanding the emergence of new religions in America?

Since the genealogical dissociation represents the makeup of our family, which represents our lifestyles, how we’re brought up, what we learn and apply to our lives…etc, we can also associate this with memes which basically show how a group of people act together and why. This is how many of our cultures and customs are learned and become the guidelines for what we believe and follow the rest of our lives. Since in families, those are the strongest since the family is there to constantly back it in your mind. With that we can pick and choose what we ultimately want to believe in and make our own. By doing that we separate ourselves or dissociate with our teachers, parents, and can start or continue on with our own teaching, and since we as humans are used to having some sort of religion, therefore we see new ones everyday; and for those rebelling it, they end up starting up their own cult or religion.

Lols ... their security guard wanted to throw us out because we were "on the phone" and asked for us to turn it off . Vanara explained to him the task at hand and talked the security guard to back off . Lols . Go Vanara !!

T. VU & V. CHHAY: Norton Simon Garden Tour

Tien Vu & Vanara Chhay travels to the Norton Simon Museum of Art in Old Town Pasadena. Though the garden was closed off to visitors, we were able to peer through the fence and all and still was able to observe a bit of the surroundings as their guards peered at us cautiously. Lols.
