While setting up a mobile recording studio and yelling into a cavern to achieve an Echo may be a more ‘organic’ way of achieving this type of effect, there is a much easier way to go about this process.

Here, we will walk through the steps of using our favorite free, open-source audio editing software (Audacity) to produce a repeating sound which gradually fades into silence through the application of an Echo effect.

For today’s walk-through, we’ll be applying the Effect effect using Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode) for Windows 7 (as run via Parallels on a MacBook Pro).

Step 1: MP3 Download

Before one can edit their AudioAcrobat recording in Audacity, the first step is to make sure that the file resides on the hard drive of the computer on which editing will be performed.

1. Login to your AudioAcrobat account
2. Click Audio (L)
3. Click the Title of the Audio you wish to Download
4. Click Download Audio

Step 2: Open in Audacity

Now that the file our readers wish to edit is on their computer’s hard drive, they will want to open the file with Audacity.  Right-click the file and choose Open With and select Audacity from the list.  Don’t see it listed?  Open Audacity from the Programs portion of the Start menu on the left side of the task bar.  Open the software and click File >> Open, selecting the audio to be edited.

Once the file opens in Audacity, our readers will see something like this:

Step 3: Highlight, Echo + Export

It really is that simple.  Click and drag with the mouse cursor or for those keyboard enthusiasts out there use Shift + Left / Right arrow keys to make a selection.

For the Echo effect, our readers will want to make sure to select both the area which encompasses the intended sample for which the effect is to be applied and any space after the intended selection for which the additional repetitions (echo) will be applied.

Hint: Make sure there is plenty of silence present after the point in your audio you wish to echo.  If there is not sufficient ‘room’ left after the portion of your audio to be echoed, no echo will be applied.

Here our readers will want to select Effect >> Echo as seen below:

Immediately after selecting the Echo effect, the following pop-up window will appear:

As the Audacity wiki states, the Delay time refers to how much time will take place between each echo.  The Decay factor represents how quickly the echo will either fade to silence or amplify, depending on whether a value less than one (for fade to silence), equal to one (no fade or amplification) or greater than one (for amplification) has been selected.

In today’s post, we have selected our one-shot audio sample and about (30) seconds of silence immediately after, and have chosen the default selections of (1) for Delay time (seconds) and (0.5) for the Decay factor.

Click the Preview button to preview your echo in real-time.  If you do not hear the echo being applied, make sure you have ample space present and selected after the sample you wish to echo.  Select OK to confirm your selection and Audacity will immediately render the effect.

Looking at our final product, we see several repeated (echoed) copies of our original sample, each 1/2 (0.5) the amplitude of the original, and eventually fading to silence:

When satisfied, select File >> Export to save the newly edited version and head over to AudioAcrobat in an internet browser to begin the upload process.

Well that was quick … we’ve already walked through the process of downloading and opening our file, applying an Echo effect using Audacity for Windows 7 and exporting the file for upload to the Web … and yet it seems as though we had just begun.  If you agree, go ahead and click the ‘Previous Post’ link beneath this article to continue the joyride!

At this point you will be on the Creating A Reply Line page, where you will be asked to fill out some basic information about your new Reply Line including a Name and Line Type, along with an optional Description and Notification Email.

The Name will be seen only by you, the account holder and the Line Type will allow you to select the maximum amount of time your callers will have to record each individual message, ranging from a maximum of five to sixty minutes.

Hint: Filling out the Notification Email field will allow AudioAcrobat to send an email to the address entered here with a listen link each time a new recording is made for the Reply Line.

Click Create Reply Line to save your changes and view your Reply Line Call-In Number and Extension, as seen below:

Hey Mac users!  Does your audio sound like the person speaking was at one end of a tunnel and the microphone was at the opposite end?  Do the juxtaposition of large peaks and shallow valleys in your audio waveform clip or distort when applying a Volume or Gain increase?

Not to fear, as here we will walk through the steps of using our favorite free, open-source audio editing software (Audacity) to help increase the RMS level of your audio waveform aka how loud the audio sounds, without degrading the Noise Floor or clipping the highs, through the application of a Compressor effect.

Immediately after selecting the Compressor effect, the following pop-up window will appear:

In today’s post, we played with each of the settings and applied the Compressor effect several times to achieve our goal of boosting the lows without sending them into the distorted land of clipping.  The outcome will depend on the area selected and levels prior to applying the effect, along with any settings chosen in this popup window.

All modifications using the Threshold, Noise Floor, Ratio, Attack and Decay Time sliders, along with the Make-up gain for 0dB after compressing and Compress based on Peaks check boxes can be sampled before committing using the Preview button.  Select OK to confirm the settings and apply the effect.

Looking at our final product, we see several quieter areas boosted, without clipping; which offers a much louder-sounding audio overall:

2. Select Create a Landing Page with AudioNotes from the drop-down menu

At this point you will be on the New AudioNote page, where you will be asked to fill out some basic information about your new AudioNote including a Title/Description, selected Audio and Template.

After completing this information, our readers will come to the Message Body field of the AudioNote, where the ‘meat’ of your AudioNote body will be completed.

Notice along the top of the AudioNote editor there are (2) rows of toolbars and buttons?  These buttons allow you to organize, arrange and style your content.  Access to the Source Code and Preview modes are a couple quick examples of just how much control one has over their AudioNotes.

The button we’ll be focusing on today allows members on the Personal and Professional plans to insert an email list building form into any AudioNote they’re creating or editing within their account, which can then be managed by clicking AudioNotes (L) >> Contacts (L).

To add the email list building form, place your cursor wherever you’d like it to appear in your Message Body and select the Contact Form button found at the far right of the bottom toolbar, as displayed above.

Our readers should now see a form within the AudioNote editor containing the following fields: First Name, Last Name, Email Address and Phone (Daytime)

Save your changes at the bottom of the AudioNote editor and click View AudioNote (or highlight + copy + paste the AudioNote URL into a new browser window/tab) to see your work in its finished state.

Try adding your own contact information to the form and upon a successful completion, you should see this:

Now, whenever you visit AudioNotes (L) >> Contacts (L) in your AudioAcrobat account, you’ll see your phone and email list … it’s never been easier to collect leads using AudioAcrobat!

Have you ever needed to make far-away sounding voices appear as though they’re speaking directly into a microphone?  How about those waveforms which have an extreme variation between highs and lows that you’d like to make louder, but consistently clip / distort when using a basic Volume or Gain increase?

Here, we will walk through the steps of using our favorite free, open-source audio editing software (Audacity) to help increase the RMS level of your audio waveform aka how loud the audio sounds, without degrading the Noise Floor or clipping the highs, through the application of a Compressor effect.

For today’s walk-through, we’ll be applying the Compressor effect using Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode) for Windows 7 (as run via Parallels on a MacBook Pro).

Step 1: MP3 Download

Before one can edit their AudioAcrobat recording in Audacity, the first step is to make sure that the file resides on the hard drive of the computer on which editing will be performed.

1. Login to your AudioAcrobat account
2. Click Audio (L)
3. Click the Title of the Audio you wish to Download
4. Click Download Audio

Step 2: Open in Audacity

Now that the file our readers wish to edit is on their computer’s hard drive, they will want to open the file with Audacity.  Right-click the file and choose Open With and select Audacity from the list.  Don’t see it listed?  Open Audacity from the Programs portion of the Start menu on the left side of the task bar.  Open the software and click File >> Open, selecting the audio to be edited.

Once the file opens in Audacity, our readers will see something like this:

Step 3: Highlight, Compressor + Export

It really is that simple.  Click and drag with the mouse cursor or for those keyboard enthusiasts out there use Shift + Left / Right arrow keys to make a selection.

For the Compressor effect, our readers will want to make sure to select the area which encompasses the intended duration for which the effect is to be applied.

Here our readers will want to select Effect >> Compressor as seen below:

Immediately after selecting the Compressor effect, the following pop-up window will appear:

In today’s post, we played with each of the settings and applied the Compressor effect several times to achieve our goal of boosting the lows without sending them into the distorted land of clipping.  The outcome will depend on the area selected and levels prior to applying the effect, along with any settings chosen in this popup window.

All modifications using the Threshold, Noise Floor, Ratio, Attack and Decay Time sliders, along with the Make-up gain for 0dB after compressing and Compress based on Peaks check boxes can be sampled before committing using the Preview button.  Select OK to confirm the settings and apply the effect.

Looking at our final product, we see several quieter areas boosted, without clipping; which offers a much louder-sounding audio overall:

When satisfied, select File >> Export to save the newly edited version and head over to AudioAcrobat in an internet browser to begin the upload process.

Well that was quick … we’ve already walked through the process of downloading and opening our file, applying a Compressor effect using Audacity for Windows 7 and exporting the file for upload to the Web … and yet it seems as though we had just begun.  If you agree, go ahead and click the ‘Previous Post’ link beneath this article to continue the joyride!

You too can add clickable custom branding to your Video Players!

It has never been easier for Coaches to brand their Audio and Video players with custom button styles, colors, controls and yes, even clickable graphic overlays aka watermarks using AudioAcrobat’s new Player Themes!

After reading today’s post we believe that you will see how using AudioAcrobat not only makes the process of driving traffic to a specific online location through Video quick and easy, but also how the global coaching profession can benefit directly from this type of service.

Once you’ve created the graphic you wish to use as your custom brand, please continue on to the quick steps below.

Quick Steps:

1. Log In to your AudioAcrobat account
2. Select Create a Custom Player Theme for Audio or Video from the drop-down menu

Select Create a Custom Player Theme for Audio or Video from the drop-down menu

At this point you will be on the New Player Theme page, where you will see the Player Preview selection.  Click Video Player to preview how the theme will look when published.

As seen above, the Branding and Extras tab can be selected to revel options to include/remove both the AudioAcrobat Affiliate Link and a Custom Brand.  Place a check mark in the Custom Brand check box to enable this feature.

Click the BROWSE button which appears to the right of Upload Brand Image: to browse your computer’s hard drive for the image you have (hopefully) created prior to beginning this tutorial.

While the image is uploading you should see something like what is shown above, with the selected file name and file size outlined to the right of the red/white X.  Click the X to cancel your upload or wait until the upload completes.

Enter the URL you wish for your traffic to be redirected to when your Custom Brand watermark is clicked on in the Link URL field.  If the watermark is clicked on in the Player Theme creation process, a pop-up will confirm which URL will be used once published ‘live’ on the Web.

Use the Image Size slider to increase/decrease the size of your watermark and use the Image Alpha slider to determine the transparency of your Custom Brand.

Once satisfied with how the Custom Brand will appear within the Player Theme, click the General Settings tab and give your new theme a specific Title + Description, such as: My Branded Video Theme or My Company’s Video Theme.

One last thing… make sure to press the Save Theme button before navigating away from this page.

Now, whenever you choose to publish your Video for the Web using Player Themes, your custom branded Player Theme will appear in the available themes drop-down menu!

Quick Steps:

1. Log In to your AudioAcrobat account
2. Select Create a Video with a Webcam or Upload from your Computer from the drop-down menu
3. Click Video Web Recorder

Select Create a Video with a Webcam or Upload from your Computer from the drop-down menu

Click Video Web Recorder

At this point you will be on the Video Web Recorder page, where you will most likely see the Adobe Flash Player Settings + Allow / Deny buttons.  Click Allow to give AudioAcrobat permission to access your Webcam and click Begin to bring up the recording interface.

As seen above, the Video Web Recorder interface will display a live preview what your Webcam sees (ours was covered), along with several key functions found immediately to the left:

Configure Camera: Select from different devices attached to your computer, which is especially useful if you do not see a live video feed appearing in the preview pane.

Configure Microphone: Select the microphone device, set / adjust volume, reduce echo and store your Adobe Flash Player Allow / Deny preference here.

To the right, you will see the red Record button.  Click this button to begin recording.  The Stop button will cease recording and the Play button will allow for an instant review post-recording.

Enter a Title and Description to better identify your video in the future and when satisfied with your recording, click Save to send this video to your AudioAcrobat account.  This action will re-direct you to the Media Jobs page where you will be able to track your video’s transcode progress.

If you’re not sure what the Media Jobs page looks like, the example below should help in its identification:

Once the Status of your upload reaches Complete, the uploaded file will appear in the Video section of your account.

Now that the file our readers wish to edit is on their computer’s hard drive, they will want to open the file with Audacity.  Right-click the file and choose Open With and select Audacity from the list.  Don’t see it listed?  Open Audacity from the Programs portion of the Start menu on the left side of the task bar.  Open the software and click File >> Open, selecting the audio to be edited.

Once the file opens in Audacity, our readers will see something like this:

Note the spikes: (1) at the beginning and (1) at the end...

Hint: Click the image above to enlarge and you should see the (2) spikes aka ‘clicks’ that we’re going to remove in today’s post.  The first near the top-left and the second near the bottom-right.

Step 3: Highlight, Click Removal + Export

It really is that simple.  Click and drag with the mouse cursor or for those keyboard enthusiasts out there use Shift + Left / Right arrow keys to make a selection.

For the Click Removal effect, our readers will want to make sure to select the area which encompasses the intended duration for which the effect is to be applied.

Here our readers will want to select Effect >> Click Removal as seen below:

Immediately after selecting the Click Removal effect, the following pop-up window will appear:

In today’s post, we will be using the default values seen above, but you are welcome to use the Select Threshold and Max Spike Width value(s) / slider(s) to fine-tune this effect per your specific needs.

Use the Preview button to sample the effect before making a commitment and press OK to confirm the settings and apply the effect.

Here, we see that the two spikes pointed out earlier in this post have been removed, without affecting the surrounding audio:

When satisfied, select File >> Export to save the newly edited version and head over to AudioAcrobat in an internet browser to begin the upload process.

Once you completed the recording of your coaching session and have your file(s) ready to upload, please continue on to the quick steps below.

Quick Steps:

1. Log In to your AudioAcrobat account
2. Select Upload Audio from your Computer from the drop-down menu

At this point you will be on the Upload Audio page, where you will see the File: Browse button.  Click Browse to pull up your local hard drive(s) and attached devices and click Open to select the file you wish to upload.

As seen above, the next step is to enter a meaningful Title and Description for the file your uploading.  This will help locate the file and determine the file’s purpose, should the question ever arise.

Hint: Audio Title and Audio Description are for internal use only, visible only by the AudioAcrobat account holder.  This information is never made public.

Moving down the page, we see a pre-filled Audio Quality selection of High Quality (128kb, 44kHz, stereo), which will suit most users’ needs.

Hint: A High Quality selection will yield rich streaming audio and is great for music, radio shows and other productions.  When uploading a conference call or other phone recording, there is no benefit in choosing anything other than Low Quality.

When satisfied, click Upload to get the ball rolling.

After clicking Upload, a new progress bar will appear to the (R) of the File: Browse button at the top of the page.  This will display the speed of the upload taking place in KB/s as well as the selected file name.

It is important to keep this page open in your internet browser until re-directed to the Media Jobs page, as this will be your confirmation that the upload has successfully completed.

If you’re not sure what the Media Jobs page looks like, the example below should help in its identification (click to enlarge):

Once the Status of your upload reaches Complete, the uploaded file will appear in the Audio section of your account.
