There are a staggering number of bands on the official SXSW website. Picking acts to see during the week is a challenge, never-mind actually getting to the right shows. To make this a little easier, we created a tool that lets you figure out which SXSW bands you’re going to enjoy the most. Check it out!

Give it a SWSW artist, and it will show bands we recommend for that artist, and noting ones that are performing this year. This can help you get a feel for what you are going to see before you get in line. If you want to visualize these relationships another way, we’ve also built some pretty graphs that show you the links between all the related artists.

The arrows mean there is a connection between the artists, and the darker green artists are actually performing at SXSW this year.

All of this relies on one of the engines that drive Mixes, our new internet radio service. So after you get back from Austin, come back to Audiogalaxy.com and try it out.

A little over a year ago, Audiogalaxy launched in beta to enable people to access their entire music library everywhere. With the new Mixes feature we launched today, we’re expanding the music experience.

Audiogalaxy Mixes brings us closer to our vision of an ideal music experience. However, creating a music service people love and that is appropriately licensed is a difficult challenge. Music fans want to enjoy and discover new music while musicans, labels, and songwriters need to get paid for their work. We hope that the new Audiogalaxy provides the best of both worlds. Our Mixes feature follows webcasting rules so we pay SoundExchange, ASCAP, BMI, and SEESAC to broadcast music that customers already love, and also new music in a radio-style format. New songs users love can be purchased via the Amazon MP3 Store. Mixes are currently available for US customers only – we wish we could offer the feature internationally, but our current licenses do not permit that.

Our secret sauce, we believe, is in picking the best tracks to play. We have developed our own recommendation engine to find the songs customers will enjoy in their Mixes, and as people use the service, we can refine their experience to ensure that they continue discovering great music.

There are also times when customers want to play specific songs that they own and love, instead of a radio-style experience. For such occasions, Audiogalaxy makes sure that their personal collection of music is always available to them no matter where they go, and is streamed directly from their computer.

We hope this expanded offering results in an enjoyable and fun listening experience for everyone, and we look forward to improving it even more.

Our biggest update for the iOS app is now live in the iTunes App Store. Last month we announced Offline Playback for Android and Audiogalaxy Mobile 2.0 brings the same great features to our iOS app. You can now ‘pin’ a song or a group of songs and download them to your iPhone, iPad or iPod wherever you are – no need for clunky desktop software, wires or even WiFi!

Swipe rows to show new options

Offline Mode

After you pin songs to your device you can still enjoy your music the next time you’re on a plane or in an area with spotty network access. You are in control of what is pinned and what is streamed – simply swipe any row to pin or un-pin songs. You can pin entire playlists, albums, artists, genres or individual songs. Enter offline mode via the Settings menu, and jump back online using the ‘Go Online‘ button. In addition to making them available offline, pinning the songs you play most will reduce dataplan usage and improve battery life, because the local copy will be used even when you are online. (So go ahead and pin that ‘Most Played Songs’ playlist first!)

You can pin a limited number of songs as part of the free trial, and once you purchase the add-on there is no limit (except for space on your device) on how many songs you can download. You can purchase the add-on as an in-app purchase from the Settings menu, and can also check the status of your download. You can also get visual cues throughout the app to know when downloads are in progress – try it out!

Offline Playback Options

This new release also introduces the ability to swipe a song to like it, add it to any existing playlist or start a new playlist with the song. We’re excited to bring you these features, but we have some even better features coming up in the near future, so stay tuned!

Today, we released an updated Audiogalaxy Music application for Android (version 2.2.1) with a premium add-on that enables you to play music using Audiogalaxy when you don’t have internet access, when your Audiogalaxy Helper is offline, or when you simply wish to not consume bandwidth. You can now ‘pin’ a song or a group of songs to your device. Pinning a song downloads a high quality version in the background to your SD card so it can be played offline. No need for wires or clunky desktop software – you have full control right from the application on your device!

Our users love the streaming experience that Audiogalaxy provides on mobile devices, with glitch-free audio even in areas with weak network coverage. Super-fast streaming directly from your computer to your device using Audiogalaxy is a great way to access all your music everywhere, without worrying about endless uploading to someone else’s cloud or worrying about hitting silly limits.

But even in our highly connected world, we sometimes find ourselves out of reach of the internet – on a plane, in the subway or in the wilderness. Additionally, you may be more conscious of how much bandwidth you are using on a limited data plan. Pinning the songs you like takes care of both of these problems as well as reducing battery usage.

Pinned songs

Offline Song Stats

Simply pin entire playlists, artists, albums or genres directly from the top-level tabs, or pick and choose individual songs. In addition to making them available offline, pinning songs you play most will reduce network utilization and improve battery life, because the local copy will be used even when you are online. You can pin a limited number of songs as part of the free trial, and once you purchase the add-on there is no limit (except for space on your device) on how many songs you can download. Remember, you can queue songs for download at any time but to ensure best performance, songs are only downloaded when you are connected to a WiFi network.

As you navigate your collection, you will see a pin icon alongside songs available offline, or songs queued for download. You can check the status of your downloads and the space consumed on your SD card from the Settings tab, and you can free up space by unpinning songs if you need to. Toggling between online and offline mode is easy – simply hit ‘Menu’ and select ‘Go Offline’ or ‘Go Online’.

Protip: The first playlist you’ll want to pin is your “Most Played Songs”. That will get you quick access to the music you are most likely to listen to. After that, pin your ‘Liked Songs” list. If you don’t have any Liked songs, look for the little heart in extra bar of options on the player.

Customize any song into a ringtone

The ‘Offline Playback‘ add-on in this new version joins the ‘Ringtone Creator‘ add-on, which lets you easily convert an unlimited number of songs in your Audiogalaxy collection into ringtones. With the Ringtone Creator, you can precisely configure the start time so that you can create that special ringtone which will be the envy of all your friends.

While streaming your music will continue to remain free, we hope you enjoy this first set of premium add-ons. We love getting feedback from users, so do let us know what you think about these updates.

PS: We’re also working on bringing offline playback to iOS, so iOS fans – stay tuned!

Audiogalaxy users tend to have a lot of music (almost 1.2 billion total songs on the system at the time of writing this post). It’s essential that users can quickly find and play exactly what they’re looking for on the go. Our currently shipping iOS and Android apps are designed to let users rapidly filter their collection by playlist, artist, album and genre or to search their entire collection. Here’s a quick overview of the different search-related features in Audiogalaxy.

The Android app has intelligent scrolling, which lets you jump letters as you rapidly scroll up and down your lists. Did you know that to filter the list without scrolling, you can simply start typing what you’re looking for? For instance, to see all artists with the name “Michael”, switch to the Artists tab, slide open your keyboard and start typing. If your device doesn’t have a hardware keyboard, press and hold the menu key on your device to bring up the soft keyboard and start typing. Watch the list filter as you type. You can do the same thing on the albums, playlists or genres tabs.

To search your entire collection for all songs where a particular search term appears either in the song, artist or album name simply hit the ‘Search’ button on your device. Results are shown as you type, and you can even say the search string using the voice input button! Then, just queue or play the songs directly from the search results.

Filter contents of a tab

The iOS app has similar features – you can jump directly to a letter by clicking on the vertical list of letters on the right, or filter the list of artists, albums, playlists or genres. To filter the list, use the familiar search box at the very top of every tab – the list will update as you type. Looking for a specific song? Jump to the search tab and start typing. Results are instantly updated as you type so you can get to your song quickly. You can queue or play the song directly from the search results.

On the website too, you can sort your collection to see the newest songs first, or you can use our nifty alphabetic sort bar to automatically scroll to the letter you’re looking for. The instant-search box lets you find any song in your entire collection from wherever you are on the site.

So go ahead and load up Audiogalaxy with all your songs knowing that your favorite artist, album or song is never more than just a few clicks away!

Several users gave it a test run and sent us some great feedback. We went back and changed a few things based on what you suggested, and now this update is live on Android Market for everyone to use! We’ve taken our awesome streaming service and added some fun social aspects to Audiogalaxy. Music is inherently social, and this release is just the beginning for what we have planned.

Add songs to existing playlists

Filter songs by location, view suggested songs or browse global plays when you’re Exploring

Bigger player bar with larger buttons

Social buttons bar remembers whether you prefer it be hidden or visible

Promote or delete songs that appear in the next up list in Genie mode

We’ve been busy making some big changes to Audiogalaxy, and the Android app is almost ready for primetime. Before we let it loose into the wild, we wanted to let you play with it and tell us what you think.

Easier sign-in using Facebook

Tell friends about Audiogalaxy right from the app

and more…

We hit a big milestone this month — 1 billion audio files have been added to the Audiogalaxy system by our users. We are flattered there has been so much uptake of our personal music streaming service, but what you see today is just the surface of our vision. We are working on exciting ways to discover new music as well as better ways to listen to your own music.

To start, we have launched “Audiogalaxy Genie“.

“Genie” looks at the last five tracks in your playlist and then based on those tracks looks through your entire collection finding other tracks you want to hear. For people with large music collections, this is the best way to create a multi hour playlist of what you want to hear. If you haven’t tried it, please give it a shot – it works on the website, Android, and now iOS. You won’t find the Audiogalaxy Genie anywhere else since it is custom engineered for our users exclusively.

You also might have noticed a new “Friends” tab on the Audiogalaxy website. If you signed up via Facebook Connect or linked your existing account you can invite your friends to see how similar your tastes are and keep up with their latest and favorite songs.

We are only scratching the surface. The community and social aspects of Audiogalaxy in 2002 were unmatched at the time and we look forward to bringing that excitement back to the relaunched Audiogalaxy in 2011.
