I completely understand this! I write parts that I thought up of and can somehow record it but it's hard to play live. Even if I can play/sing it, the problem is usually singing and playing it at the same time. (I usually play bass and sing. I don't think about melody when I come up with the bass part or vice versa...so often I have to figure out how to play it togeter after it has been recorded.)

I have performed songs without playing an instrument by making a karaoke track of my music.
However, I don't think of myself as a singer as much as a player. So playing and singing at the same time is important to me. When it's really hard I on ocassion simpilfy the bass line but I don't like to do that either.

wow, thank you! i'm gonna post all the disgusting details about the creation of this.....thing right here during the next few days. each song, each decision, the whole mess. but here's two infos right now: get the book "Guerrilla Home Recording" by Karl Koryat - and read it of course :-) and second, apart from recording the vocals (Cubase LE 4) i did everything with Reason 4 and a Macbook. everything. if you decide to use Reason (or already do), get the book "Powertools for Reason 3" by Kurt Kurasaki (maybe there's a newer version) as well. that's about it! all other infos will come in the next entries, there will be one about the drums as well...

and i was about to ask: 'how the hell did you get this incredibly fat sound out of your drumkit? wow, please teach me how to do that!' i'll change that question now to: which samples, please? and, you being a drummer, how did you play them electronically? on the keyboard?
but anyway: great sound, cool atmospheres and one of my all-time-favorite-in-your-face-album-kick-offs: 'RRRAAAH!' Great!

Hi Hadrigg,

Try using http://drop.io/ It is an online file sharing service which allows you, among other things, to set up a pay-per-download service. I haven't done much with it myself but it might be worth checking it out. Look for the paywall service which allows you to charge people for access to your drop.

I love this album and own it.

Damn this groove is a joy. I'm counting it as alternating measures of 9/8 and 7/8... which resolves over 8/8(4/4). I love how Carlock flattens this out in the drum into driving 4 on the floor right over the pattern... love it

yep, i know that one too well. my way of escaping this phenomenon is twofold: on the one hand it leads to compositions, which literally take years to complete 'themselves' (and we're not talking about large-scale stuff, just some 3-5 minute instrumental pieces for guitar and piano, say) on the other hand it leads to 'instant composing', or improvising.
i don't particularly like the usual improvised music, which mostly sounds somewhat empty to me, but i do like that point, where composition and improvisation get close to each other. a piano teacher once told me, that the great improvisors (in the classical realm) set out for a tour of improvisations, work on the same themes every night and by the end of the tour, they have a complete composition. well.
anyway, i guess, when improvising, things happen much faster and you just don't have the time to worry too much about 'quality'. you gotta keep going anyway, and if it sucks, you gotta change your path, quickly.
when i think about those glorious situations of composing, where the 'craftsman syndrome' (i like that one!) is absolutely absent, the term that springs to mind is: 'FLOW'. when you enter the flow, things just happen, and no scepticism or quality control interferes.
but then, the thing is: for me, it takes a lot of time to ENTER the flow.
alright, enough of this.
i think it's a good thing to blog things like this. to me, sharing the inner aspects of the process of making music seems very much worthwhile and helpful.

yep, i know that one too well. my way of escaping this phenomenon is twofold: on the one hand it leads to compositions, which literally take years to complete ‘themselves’ (and we’re not talking about large-scale stuff, just some 3-5 minute instrumental pieces for guitar and piano, say) on the other hand it leads to ‘instant composing’, or improvising.
i don’t particularly like the usual improvised music, which mostly sounds somewhat empty to me, but i do like that point, where composition and improvisation get close to each other. a piano teacher once told me, that the great improvisors (in the classical realm) set out for a tour of improvisations, work on the same themes every night and by the end of the tour, they have a complete composition. well.
anyway, i guess, when improvising, things happen much faster and you just don’t have the time to worry too much about ‘quality’. you gotta keep going anyway, and if it sucks, you gotta change your path, quickly.
when i think about those glorious situations of composing, where the ‘craftsman syndrome’ (i like that one!) is absolutely absent, the term that springs to mind is: ‘FLOW’. when you enter the flow, things just happen, and no scepticism or quality control interferes.
but then, the thing is: for me, it takes a lot of time to ENTER the flow.
alright, enough of this.

thank you very much! i guess the slowing down is more of a plugin-problem - not sure though... i'll find a new theme and go over the plugins again, hopefully it will get better. slow sites are quite a bummer...
