The Battle of Aiken was this past weekend, and it certainly was an impressive event. The media is reporting some ten thousand spectators, and I heard in the camps that the total re-enactors were some where around five or six hundred. It was mighty awe inspiring to be on the parade ground with so many fellow living historians there honoring our ancestors. Our unit had to galvanize (meaning, dress Union), so we were on the losing side of the battle. Kind of lame to have to lose the battle AND dress Union, but it's all good. The first sergeant in our unit went down first with a couple of other guys. On the second drive, I found a nice shade tree with soft sand to 'take a hit' under. As I laid there playing dead, I was able to sneak a few pictures from the dead and wounded soldier's perspective. Not all of them are good -- I mean I was dead, you know -- but some of them are. I also manage to get a good many of encampment, sutler, and living history exhibit pics. The few shots of us on the parade ground were mostly obtained from other spectators. There was quite a huge amount of media in play also. In fact one of the links below is an actual TV News Reel of us skirmishing for the school kids on friday -- I am the guy in the grey jacket with blue kepi and off-white scarf shooting at the Union troops. Of the pictures I have seen, I think the shot of one of our unit members, Jerry Redmon, from The State newspaper is my favorite.

Florida Vacation Pics

It occurred to me that I somehow neglected to post a link to the pictures I took on my trip to Florida at the beginning of last month.

I was down there to see my old college friend for the July 4th weekend. We hung out in Ft. Myers -- where he lives -- for a few days and managed to tackle all four of the Disney World Parks in only two days. It was exhausting but fun.

I have made no judgment of value and put every picture taken that weekend up here. Anyhow, hope you enjoy them.

I was driving home from work yesterday listening to 96.9 The Wolf -- a pretty routine weekday afternoon -- and heard a new song that really hit home with me. Those that know me are aware that the woman I married committed adultery with at least two border jumpers, so I have realized the evils of the Mexican Invasion the hard way.

Anyway I am not much of a Parrothead -- though my Mom was a huge one -- but I must say that the Jimmy Buffet style of music that Buddy Jewel uses on this song really has to be the best choice for the In Your Face, Toby Kieth Style Lyrics. This song is probably the best I attempt at dealing with the issue of illegal immigration that I have ever heard. It is raw, unapologetic and to the point.

I have said it over and over again, and I won't stop saying it: Riley has got to go!!!

The fact is: We are statistically due for a major Hurricane at least the likes of Hugo, but we are not prepared!! Riley has done nothing to rectify the flooding issues of our resilient city, and it is going to bite us in the butt in a big way!

Today, the Post and Courier provided coverage of the science that proves my point!

After a series of significant smack downs, the inevitable has occur. BluRay always had a better technical specification than HD-DVD, and the companies backing BluRay were always more plentiful and significant. However Toshiba, Microsoft, Universal, and others have acted like the Mike Huckabee Campaign and for about as long. We have seen recent losses for the HD-DVD camp from about every movie company worth discussing, BestBuy, Walmart, NetFlix, Target, Blockbuster, and more. For some reason, the HD-DVD camp just didn't get it!!!

The truth is Sony had a score to settle with BluRay that dates back to the time of BetaMax!!! Let it be clear in our minds that the PS3 was built with Bluray more for the benefit of the format than the game console itself. No doubt, it has only been recently that Sony has even entered into a business model for the PS3 that actually makes them a profit on each PS3 gaming console they sell. They were actually losing money on the units, every since the PS3 launch.

It seems clear why: Sony has a lot to gain through BluRay distribution!! Of course the actual games themselves -- retailing around $60 -- probably make up for some of the consoles' losses, but clearly, they were in this to win the format war. If you ask me, it was both shrewd and brilliant.

Congrats to Sony; let the Home Entertainment Enthusiasts rejoice. Now, if I can only get a timely BluRay release of "The Kingdom", I would find Universal Pictures to be a stand up outfit!!!

In memory of Josh Spruill

Word has come from the MUSC community that Friends, Family, and Science has lost a great contributor. After having been blessed by his second child being born on Saturday, Joshua Spruill -- a long time MUSC ITC (Cell Biology & Anatomy) and CofC alumnis -- died suddenly. He leaves behind his wife -- Laura Spruill, Daughter -- Samantha, and the new born son -- Luke Isaac.

Josh was a great friend to many. He was extremely intelligent and passionate about technology and science. He would go out of his way to talk to you, and he was always good for a favor to a friend.

Josh will be missed by all!!

If it weren't enough that Fred -- the only true conservative running for President in 2008 -- dropped out prior to Florida, today showed GOP voters just how foolish they have been.

After Super Tuesday brought sounds of rejoicing over McCain's supposed sealing of the GOP nomination from the many liberals, RINOs, and even democrats, the Libertarians are even up in arms. The leadership of the Libertarian Party today showed up at the RNC headquarters in Washington, DC with a mourning reef.

Little did they know, but Romney would drop out -- retaining delegates in the style of Edwards -- just hours later.

It is indeed a sad, sad day to be a conservative voter in America

Both old and new school gearheads, motorheads, and car enthusiasts should be equally excited about today for two reasons:

1) The Chicago Auto Show opens to the public in just a few minutes -- both live and static web cams have been plentifully placed throughout the showroom floor!

2) With the Chicago Auto Show comes the official (re)release of the 2008 Dodge Challenger, a classic Pony car that reminds drivers why Chrysler did so well back in the day of the muscle car!!!

The following is a comment I posted in response to a post up at Race42008.com.

"As a pro-life, evangelical, conservative Republican, my support for Rudy was always based on pragmatism. I saw him as the most conservative candidate in the field on the broadest range of issues: fiscal responsibility, limited government, health reform, tax reform, government reform, education reform, federalism, judicial philosophy, and national security. "

By your own declaration, you have stated that Social issues are among the most important to you. Too bad you have wasted your support on a candidate that has always been a liberal, especially in social issues. Just think, you could have gotten behind Fred and backed a REAL CONSERVATIVE -- in all areas.

This is a clear example of how we have let the RNC go to hell in a hand basket!! Why don't people vote with their convictions any more? Why do Republicans -- especially evangelicals -- throw up their hands to pragmatism and then realize that their choice was not pragmatic?

I am so tired of people saying they are 'Conservative' and then suggesting that they are voting based on whom they think is most likely to be nominated/elected, because they say their 'vote would be wasted' if they voted for whom they think is really the best candidate!!!

Use your brain people: If you vote for someone that you do not think is a good candidate; you waste your vote by definition of the term!!! If you vote for someone that you think is more electable or more practical, your vote is never heard.

It is simple logic that a grade school student even understands: voting for some one you do not think to be the best choice that would be elected anyway does not give your vote any voice at all!!! If you vote your conscience -- instead of merely voting for whom you think will win -- it should not hurt the so-called inevitable winning candidate -- nor the party!! If the candidate that seems practical is truly that strong, he will appeal to the majority. Voting for the person your beliefs best match up with, however, strengthens the Republican Party. No doubt, if you vote your conscience, it is more likely the right person has a shot!!

If more Republicans would "stand up and be a man", instead of have useless conversations about 'elect-ability' and 'late to the show' -- if more self professed " ... pro-life, evangelical, conservative Republican[s] ..." would vote and campaign as and for Conservatives instead of selling their integrity down river to the MSM and their so-called pragmatism, then we would not have a blatantly liberal RINO nominee in store for us!!!

It's just like the old country song that has so much Biblical Truth, "You've got to stand for something, or you'll fall for anything!"

Statement from Fred Thompson today:

Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.

It's official; there is no longer a Conservative Presidential Candidate for the 2008 election cycle!!

The populist RINO's have won, thanks to the Liberal Main Stream Media and Huckabee's illegal campaign practices.

It is time for major reform of the republican party. Unfortunately, it is becoming very clear that reform is going to mean breaking away from -- Luther wanted to stay in the Catholic Church to reform from within. We all know how that turned out. It appears the time has come!!!
