Their membership isn't a fixed list of users. Instead, it's defined by a query or filter based on user attributes in Active Directory.
Example: Imagine a DDL called "Darwin Operations Team." Its membership might be defined by a query like: "Include all users where 'Department' is 'Operations' AND 'City' is 'Darwin'."

If a new employee joins the company, is assigned to the Operations department, and their city is set to Darwin, they are automatically and instantly included in the "Darwin Operations Team" DDL. No manual intervention is needed. Similarly, if someone leaves the operations department, they're automatically removed.
Management: Defined and managed within Exchange administration tools.
Permissions: DDLs cannot be used to assign permissions to resources (eg. you can't grant a DDL access to a shared folder on a network drive). Their sole purpose is email routing.

Mail-Enabled: Critically, an AD security group can be "mail-enabled." This means an email address is assigned to it (e.g., financeaudit@yourcompany.com.au). When someone sends an email to this address, all current members of the security group receive it.

For a DDL, it's Exchange.
For an Orchestrator-managed security group, it's the Orchestrator system (or whatever automation is in place) that dictates the membership, even if you see the result in Active Directory.

Purpose and Best Practices: Using the right type of group for the right purpose ensures cleaner AD and Exchange environments. While a mail-enabled security group can act as a distribution list, it's primarily designed for security.

Automation Flexibility: Orchestrator or similar systems offer much more complex logic for group membership than simple Exchange DDL queries. They can integrate with HR systems, project management tools, and other data sources to drive group memberships based on business rules that go beyond standard AD attributes.

You probably saw it: “Act as a project manager…” or “Pretend you’re a senior developer…” and the claim was that this somehow made ChatGPT smarter or more useful.

But does it really work? Or are people just giving it better input and seeing better results?

Let’s unpack this:

Why Role-Playing Can Work

Role-based prompting can improve your results, but not because it unlocks some secret setting in the model. It works because it gives the model specific and useful context, which helps guide its response more precisely.

Here’s how:

No magic here, just predictive modelling based on well-framed context. The model’s not being clever; it’s being steered.

So yes, role-playing works, but really it’s a shortcut to better prompting habits. You could get the same clarity just by saying:

No prompted role-playing here, but it achieves the same thing: you’re specifying what kind of answer you want, and the intended audience it is for.

When Role-Playing Becomes More Than Just Tone

It’s worth noting that role-play prompts aren’t just about simplifying tone or style. They can also unlock more complex behaviour, like simulating debates, multi-character interactions, or dynamic dialogues.

For example:

That prompt is doing more than just setting tone it’s telling the model to hold two distinct viewpoints, maintain a consistent narrative for each, and explore nuance. That’s a far more advanced use of the model’s capabilities and one where role-playing is exactly the right tool.

Why It Feels Better to Humans

Another factor is psychological. When you read a response that starts with: “As a senior project manager, here’s how I’d explain it…”

A human instinctively tends to feel more at ease. It reads more like a human response, more like advice from someone who “knows what they’re talking about.”

Even if the content isn’t massively different from a generic explanation, the framing improves trust in the answer.

It’s not just about the model behaving better, there's that human element of 'us' responding more positively to something that sounds contextual and grounded.

When Role-Playing Doesn’t Help

While role-based prompts can improve clarity, they’re only useful if the role adds meaning to the situation.

For example: “Pretend you're a fluffy kitten. What’s the best way to make a beef casserole?”

Would not at all be clever prompting, it’s just adding noise. The kitten persona doesn’t help explain the recipe. In fact, it makes the answer less usable.

So the takeaway is simple: if the role helps clarify perspective, tone, or purpose, use it. If it’s just a gimmick, skip it.

So by all means, get ChatGPT to “act as” someone if that benefits your usage. Now you will hopefully have a little understanding of why it works: because the model responds best when you set the scene clearly.

📌 Sidenote: Does This Trick Work on Other AI Models Too?

Yes role-playing techniques work on most modern large language models, not just ChatGPT.

Whether you're using Claude, Gemini, Mistral, LLaMA, or even running something locally through Ollama, the trick holds up. These models are all designed to predict text based on prior context, so giving them a role (like “act as a legal adviser” or “pretend you're a beginner”) provides the exact type of pattern they rely on to shape their response.

Why it works:

Can AI truly replicate the nuanced process of artistic creation? I set out to answer that question by generating 'Lights Out,' an AI pop-rock band, and their debut single, 'TONIGHT,' from the ground up, aiming to generate not just a song, but a complete artistic identity, from backstory to music video.

It's worth mentioning here that I have produced real life music videos in the past for both television and streaming platform release, however with a production hiatus that inevitably comes from having a young family I've not really had the time to throw into a drawn out shooting and editing schedule, so thought I might draw on previous experiences and apply them to this experiment.

The Project Overview of Lights Out and "TONIGHT"

"Lights Out" a completely AI generated construct, is a fictional pop-rock band hailing from Australia, more specifically the Western Sydney suburb of Campbelltown. Featuring front man Kai "Riot" Riley: lead vocals/guitar, Finn Carter: guitar, Jed Carter :bass, (yes Finn and Jed are brothers) and Taj "Crash" Miller on drums. The band's debut single, "TONIGHT", is designed as a high-energy party anthem. Think: a mashup with Sum 41 and 5 Seconds of Summer type feels and you'd be halfway there without hearing the actual track.

The project began with establishing a comprehensive backstory for the band, grounding their identity and musical style. This foundation although perhaps not critical, was still useful in guiding the AI tools in the right creative direction.

The Narrative Construction. Lyrics & Storyboarding with Collaborative AI

Lyrics and a storyboard were essential for creating a cohesive artistic vision for the debut track and the music video. I employed a collaborative Ai approach:

Osmi AI: For initial brainstorming and unconventional lyric generation.
Gemini: For refining and structuring the narrative, ensuring coherence.
ChatGPT: For polishing and adding emotional depth to the lyrics and storyboard.

Osmi AI excelled at generating novel ideas, Gemini at structuring them, and ChatGPT at refining them. Leveraging these complementary strengths achieved a well-rounded result in my opinion.

The Sonic Blueprint. Music Generation with Suno

I initiated this step by crafting the musical foundation using Suno. This wasn't a simple "generate a song" scenario. Besides the pre-crafted lyrics being used as input here, I also explicitly defined the parameters for better results:

Genre Specificity: I explicitly stated "pop-rock," drawing on the platform's understanding of musical styles.
Emotional Tone: I described the desired emotional landscape, eg energetic, rebellious, and anthemic.
Instrumentation: I implied the classic pop-rock instrumentation such guitars, bass, drums – through genre selection. eg prompt "Up-tempo pop-rock with a strong back beat and rhythhmic fills, a driving bassline featuring distorted guitar rhythms, and melodic guitar solos."

The insight here was that AI, even in its nascent stage, can interpret and translate complex artistic directives. However, the output's quality was directly proportional to the precision of the input. Vague prompts yielded generic results, while detailed instructions produced more nuanced and genre-authentic tracks closer to what I had in mind.

Visual Identity. Character Generation with Leonardo AI and ImageFX

Visual consistency ie "consistent character generation" proved to be the most significant challenge I encountered. I wanted to create believable characters, and the same believable characters on-demand if possible which is actually still rather difficult to do although platforms are improving these features quickly:

Leonardo AI: For generating stylized and artistically driven images. For creating and training reference models.
ImageFX (Google Labs): For creating photorealistic and adaptable images.

The challenge was maintaining consistency across multiple generations. Subtle variations in prompts and random seed values led to significant discrepancies in character appearance. Even locking seed values did not result in the consistency required as there were still minor variations due to the other random elements used within the generation process. I discovered that:

Creating detailed reference images from multiple angles was crucial.
Using consistent prompts and locked seed values helped, but wasn't foolproof.
Manual editing and compositing were sometimes necessary to provide a generation input to achieve the desired level of character consistency with the output.

This step revealed the limitations of current AI image generation in maintaining precise visual continuity. You can see examples of this throughout the video if you are looking for them, however the video overall still had a good level of character consistency for a human observer given the limitations we are working with.

Animation. Bringing the Characters to Life with Kling AI

Animation posed its own set of challenges. Kling AI was selected for its lip-syncing capabilities in comparison to its competition, but I encountered limitations:

The platform's ability to maintain character consistency during motion was limited depending on the circumstance.
Complex camera movements and dynamic scenes often resulted in glitches and artefacts.
The length of continuous animation clips was restricted.

The lessons I learned here:

Short, controlled animation clips were more successful than long, complex sequences.
Careful planning and editing were essential for mitigating glitches and artefacts.
Using consistent reference images was extremely important for character continuity.

Epiphany. The Humans are Still Indispensable!
Throughout the project, I encountered a recurring theme: Yes AI is a powerful tool, but it still requires human guidance and oversight. The creative process is not a linear, algorithmic operation; it's a dynamic, iterative dialogue between human and machine.

While AI may excel at generating content, humans are still essential for curating and refining it. And ultimately if there were no human to witness it, what would the point really be anyway?

The creative process with AI is not about replacing human creativity, but augmenting it. I would argue that the most successful AI projects are those that leverage the strengths of both human and machine.

While my experiment started primarily around seeing if I could create an AI band; it became so much more than that. I started to understand better the evolving relationship between creativity and technology. And as AI continues to evolve, we should continue to explore its capabilities and limitations to ensure it remains a tool for human expression rather than a tool to replace it.

I got slipped an interesting URL in a closed discord channel this morning for a new Ai project apparently just around the corner. As the discord was for a blockchain related company I naturally suspected there may be a set of capabilities being designed that would allow some interesting interrogation not available in other Ai platforms out there.

As you can see by the image below I appear to have been on the right track.

Obviously compelled to dig further by this I decided to probe the Ai a little more. For those that are interested, my findings are summarized below. Noting this information was gleaned by probing the Ai itself so in context the information is what it can understand of itself. There are some valuable insights here however.

For me the most exciting find of this is that this doesn't appear to be some centralized behemoth but instead aims to conform to a de-centralization aligned, scalable model spread across multiple nodes for distribution of computing and fault-tolerant storage. (Now I wonder who owns a large node network around here??)
