Cast Shots Once Belonged

Filming has now wrapped on Terry Finocchiaro's latest short piece "Once Belonged" and it is currently in the post production phase.

This year I was asked to do the poster composites for the film so arranged a shoot with the 3 main cast members who will be appearing on the IMDB cover.

The lighting was in place already so I thought I may as well grab a few head shots for promo while they were all there.

Below are the Black/White samples from the 3 main actors in the production. Amie Smith (Sandra), Sam Pini(Anna) and appearing in his second role for Sienna productions is Giacomo Pandini (Nat)

It will be a few months yet before the film is ready for the independent circuit, it is in the final stages of packaging to send ready to have the musical score composed and written for it.

While the recent Pitch Black exercises were a great display of fast military aircraft and a spotters haven for a whole bunch of aviation enthusiasts with ridiculously long range lenses I found myself snapping off photos that were just too similar to a lot of other images I could see populating the same social media feeds I was posting in. Although there were some obvious styling differences in the use of natural light direction and settings tricks that I have picked up from doing motorsports photography the angles and composition were very much the same.

Wanting to be able to share something different I jumped at the opportunity to get on base and slow the shooting process down. I wanted to get plenty of detail that would hold up under scrutiny when zoomed on a computer screen or TV rather than just glanced at on a mobile device. I also get a kick out of people saying they've printed one of my free releases so of course I was going to go for something high-res too.

All of the images I had seen from Pitch Black this year were single frame shots, resolution is limited by the maximum possible pixels the camera will handle ... enter the panorama. The KC-30A tanker was a perfect subject for this, it's long and relatively large. I stood back a fair distance and used the 70-200 zoomed fully in to avoid too much distortion around the edges of each shot. Oriented portrait till I could fit in the tail meant plenty of details would be picked up on a zoom. In all seven portrait shots were stiched together to achieve this shot.

The Maclean Motorsport Girls are a familiar site for anyone that has been to the Hidden Valley drag strip to watch a major meeting (or watched it televised). When the girls come out they are a sure sign that the fastest cars are about to make an appearance.

Long before you hear the roar of the Top Alcohol Funny Car the girls are on the track as the promotional face of the racing team, representing their sponsors and adding to the incredible spectacle that always goes hand in hand with the 'big boys' of drag racing.

I caught up with the girls to get some promotional team shots for Maclean Motorsport at the 2014 ANDRA Drag Racing Series, this year the line-up of Alexx Mudd and LeAnne Noelle Key also included Monster Energy girl and regular Zoo model April Vaughan.

Stay tuned because I will have another shoot with April Vaughan, one on one in the studio being published very soon.

Mindil Beach comes alive with the public fireworks display on Territory Day 2014

Territory Day, for most of us locals it's about the fireworks. It means a great deal more of course, Territory Day marks the Northern Territory's anniversary of self-governance, it is also a day we welcome new citizens as they pledge their commitment to become fellow Australians citizens in a citizenship ceremony. As a photographer though, the bits I like to capture are obvious, besides flashy shiny things catch my eye! Who could help it?

The Fit and Functional Amber Walker

This month was a good one creatively for many reasons, I tried a new genre in video and shot a hospitality advert for Tourism NT digital initiative program with Sienna Productions producer Terry Finocchiaro, the TV commercial I did for the ANDRA Drag Racing Series Darwin event was shown all weekend on the big screens at the V8 Supercars alongside the TV commercials I did with Edmund Forman for Motorsports NT, and most recently Australian Oxygen magazine ran with my photo for a spread they did on Amber Walker in their June 2014 issue.

It is most definitely not the first time I have been in print over the years but I still find that I get a child-like kick out of seeing my work published nationally. Perhaps it is a generational thing but for some reason in this day and age of digitally distributed media, seeing your work in print just seems to lend it that extra bit of cred!

Nightcliff Markets Cupcakes

OMG Cupcakes! There were 4 but one didn't make it to the studio.

Continuing on with top end dry season activities this month, the various weekend markets around Darwin see a surge in visitors this time of year. Appetites tend to increase in cooler weather and its much nicer to loiter and eat then it is during the sticky humid monsoon season.

This weekend my loitering took me past a small stall at the Nightcliff markets. The selection of neatly made and vividly coloured cupcakes caught my eye and motivated me to get the macro lens out of the cupboard where it has been a little neglected lately.

These delicious creations are the work of Jayne Parkin who not only runs the Nightcliff stall but also makes cakes for all occasions, check out OMG Cupcakes on Facebook. They taste every bit as good as they look!

Frances Bay Marina Evening

Cool dry season evenings and still water at Frances Bay Marina

The dry season in Darwin brings everyone out in the evenings, a lot of friends have set up back yard home theatres and have big gatherings, many locals take advantage of the glorious weather to eat outdoors, both at restaurants or at favourite parks and picnic areas dotted around the city, it is just a refreshing time of year NOT to be inside.

Although the massive cloud formations have gone with the departure of the monsoon season a different array of photo opportunities present themselves, including the added bonus of not having to dodge rain while out taking photos! Just out for a casual drive I spotted a vacated mooring down at the city's Frances Bay Marina and used the space to get an evening view of the sky line.

Nichelle Rolton Gym Session

Nichelle Rolton - 1st time and 3rd Place in her class at the 2014 INBA Darwin Physique competition

I've worked with Nichelle Rolton a couple of times before, the former MacLean's Motorsports team girl has featured in a couple of clips I have filmed for Speedweek's ANDRA drag racing series as well as local motorsports TV commercials. This time I caught up with her the day after her first ever physique competition for some stills work where she trains at Next Level Gym.

Nichelle was quite wrapped with her results, all the hard training and discipline certainly paid off with a 3rd place in the 2014 INBA Darwin Physique competition held at the Entertainment Centre.

Excellent placing for her debut to competitive bodybuilding, amongst seasoned competitors too, and the experience has her hungry for more, but there is no rest for this girl quite yet as she is straight back into training for her second competition coming up in the third quarter of this year. I wish her the best of luck for her next challenge and have no doubt she will place well. Hopefully we will see her again in front of the lens sometime in the near future!

In The Kitchen - Just Chillies

About to become something delicious ...

Fresh fresh chillies, Darwin has a good supply of them in all shapes and sizes. As a photographer occasionally you get the chance to cook AND take photos at the same time.

Completely off-the-cuff, this food shot was not set up for anything even remotely commercial. Straight after this was taken all that produce went straight in the mortar and pestle to make a paste for the curry pot.

Usually a fan of the hotter chillies, this curry was on the milder side of my palate but I couldn't resist the glossy red and green of the ball peppers. It was almost a shame to transform them from this ... almost.

Fravashi Poster Art

In 2013 I was invited by Darwin based indie film producer Salvatore Finocchiaro to appear in a cameo role for his short film Fravashi.

After editing was completed I offered to do a shoot and artwork for the film's poster so we re-visited one of the principal photography shooting locations at the East Point reserve to capture two of the main characters and attempt to reflect the essence of the story.

The film will be doing its round of festivals in 2014 before being released online later in the year.

One afternoon I decided that I wanted to see if I could push the phantom quadcopter up past the tall evolution apartments in Darwin city... Answer 'Yes' that's evolution in the foreground.

I've been using the very affordable ready-to-fly quad for a little while now and have been pleased with the combination of small portable platform combined with the compact form factor of the GoPro Hero3 Black mounted on it. Flight time is on the short side but still very workable and who can complain for under $1000!

Composition of these shots is via radio link FPV to a 7 inch monitor, otherwise it would just be wild estimation as to where it was pointing. The phantom is so small that I actually lost visual contact with it at this height and could only see that it was there from the video link streaming back to me.
