Hi there, it's been a while I didn't post anything here. This comes from an old paper sorting at my parent's. Back in '99 I planned to edit a punk rock fanzine and interviewed some hardcore & punk bands by email. I never published anything from that, I don't even think I spoke to anybody about that before ! The most interesting paper was Ian McKaye speaking about Straight-Edge. If you don't know who he is, go learn something on wikipedia, if you know, you understand why I am still proud of this shit : I talked to the Man dudes !

This may be one of the saddest record story. Just after the Blue Album, Weezer planned to release an indie-space-opera-rock. The project is known as "Songs from the Black Hole". The songs are so good, this coulda/shoulda been one of the better LP of the 90's. Unfortunately the project has been abandoned for obscure reasons and the fucking good songs ended up as separate tracks on Pinkerton, B-Sides and on Rivers' solo demo album. But most of the material is still unreleased and the project seems to be completely buried.

But he good news is that Kyle K made a great job and put together all the available songs, including some fan covers of unrecorded songs, edited that to make this cool to listen to, and now you can ear this marvel. If yu're an indie rock fan and never heard this, this is gonna blow your head ! This will not change the world but this might well contribute to.

This is kindda useless but I have been listening to this record for 14 years so I wanted to find a fresh way to get into it. The Breeders released many demo and alternative versions of the Last Splash songs, so this is more or less the original LP tracklisting (minus Mad Lucas and Roi (Reprise)) in demo, live,radio, single... version. If you are familiar with the original this works pretty well. Anyway, this is a killer record that would work pretty well even if it would be re-recorded in a eurodance version.

Je n'ai jamais été un très grand fan de Good Riddance mais c'est certainement un des meilleurs groupes de hardcore que j'ai vu sur scène. Vous êtes peut-être passé à côté de l'information mais ils se sont séparés l'année dernière et ont fêté ça en mai 2007 par un dernier concert enregistré avec de gros moyens. La première chose qui frappe c'est le son. Meilleur que sur la plupart de leurs disques studio. On sent que les budgets Fat Wreck ne sont plus ce qu'ils étaient il y a 15 ans à l'époque des premières sorties du label. Le disque comprend 31 chansons (c'est l'avantage du punk sur le rock progressif, il ne faut pas un coffret 5 CD pour 31 chansons). Toutes les époques sont balayées de "United Cigar" au dernier LP dont je suis bien incapable de parler.

Pour vous faire une idée, jetez une oreille à la dernière interprétation live à tomber par terre du "tube" de GR : Mother Superior

Alors que le hardcore mélodique est devenu n'importe quoi en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, Hawaiian6 perpétue la flamme au Japon depuis 2000. Ils n'ont pas tourné screamo/emo/metallo/street/new-school/numetal/irish revival hardcore, ils font ce que plus personne ne fait : du hardcore mélodique. Et ils le font bien :

Hawaiian6 est le seul groupe à avoir conservé la recette du hardcore mélodique en 2008
Hawaiian6 a un des meilleurs guitaristes de la scène punk
Hawaiian6 a les meilleures lignes de chant entendues depuis longtemps
"An Apple of Dischord"
Hawaiian6 est à peu près inconnu en dehors du Japon et c'est toujours la classe d'être fan d'un groupe inconnu ;-)
Le chanteur/guitariste a une longue barbe
Hawaiian6 n'a jamais repris un vieux tube ridicule de la FM pour le jouer en version hardcore
Les pochettes des disques d'Hawaiian6 sont belles
Hawaiian6 joue vite
Hawaiian6 est un des mes groupes vivants préférés

En lisant les news de punknews je suis tombé sur les nouveaux projets de Jesse Michaels l'ex-chanteur d'Operation Ivy :

"I am working on a new cycle of songs. I am going to either start a band or else just record with hired guns later this year. The sound of the songs is raw, traditional punk rock ala SLF, The Adverts, The Buzzcocks etc. but with modern influences also. Of course I am trying to make something original sounding so these comparisons are just for descriptive purposes. On a personal note, one consideration in this process is whether or not I still have vocals. This may be shocking to some young and still invincible people but as you get older, your voice tends to change and sometimes weaken. So if it doesn't sound right I'll switch to guitar and back ups but still play music for sure because the songs are coming regardless."

Du coup, j'ai réalisé que le chanteur d'un de mes groupes préférés n'était pas mort. Mieux il a même fait d'autres disques. Petit tour dans la disco post-Op Iv de Jesse :

1994 - Big Rig - Expansive Heart (Lookout! Records)

Je n'ai pas trouvé beaucoup d'info sur Big Rig. C'est le premiergroupe dans lequel Jesse a rejoué après Op Iv et son passage chez les moines bouddhistes (sans rire, il a été moine pendant 6 mois). Cet EP 4 titres contient des morceaux plutôt punk rapide sans être hardcore. La voix de Jesse fait chaud au coeur, il a réalisé l'artwork aussi proche de celui des disques d'Op Iv. Pas de quoi casser une crête à un punk mais ça s'écoute avec plaisir.

1999 - Common Rider - Last Wave Rockers (Lookout! Records)

Common Rider revient aux racines reggae/ska des années Op iv. Je me demande comment je suis passé à côté de ce disque à l'époque. A commence par une intro acoustique sur un ragga de Jesse et ça évolue dans du pur ska punk comme Jesse l'a inventé 10 ans auparavant. Un grand disque avec un préférence pour "Classics of Love" et "Signal, Signal" pour la basse profonde (assez eu utilisée dans le monde du punk) et le refrain entêtant. Jetez-vous dessus de toute manière, tout est excellent. Et même si vous considérez le ska punk des 90's comme une musique d'abruti en shorts, ce disque peut être une bonne introduction à la scène et au son de l'époque.

2001 - Common Rider - Thief in a Sleeping Town EP (Lookout! Records)

Enregistré avec Billy Joe Armstrong de Green Day à la guitare,cet un son plus brut que Last Wave Rockers, assez proches des premières chansons d'Op Iv quand l'nfluence ska était plus discrète

2002 -Common Rider - This is Unity Music (Hopeless Records)

Moins attachant que Last Wave Rockers, on trouve quand même au moins 2 excellentes chansons : "Firewal" et l'entêtant "Small pebble".

Et ensuite...

Il ya aussi un split avec Agaisnt All Authority que je n'ai pas écouté, il contient des outtakes de This Unity Music.

Common Rider a splitté en 2005 et depuis Jesse était muet jusqu'à l'annonce que je le relayais au début de ce message.

Si vous voulez prendre des nouvelles de Jesse et admirer son oeuvre picturale (il est aussi peintre et dessinateur) allez faire un tour sur son blog.
