‘’As a political movement seeking to redefine governance and democratic participation in Nigeria, the NDC must continue to distinguish itself through transparency, responsiveness, and accountability’’.

They also urged the leadership of the party to release the official results of the primary elections without further delay.

‘’The delegates who cast their votes deserve to know the outcome of the process. Party members deserve clarity. Nigerians who have invested hope in the NDC deserve evidence that the party remains committed to the democratic principles it has consistently advocated’’.

The committed stakeholders in the democratic future of Nigeria and supporters of the ideals upon which the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was founded in a statement on Sunday urged the party’s national leadership to provide a clear explanation regarding the reasons for the prolonged announcement process.

‘’Democracy flourishes when the people are informed. Confidence grows when institutions are transparent. Trust is strengthened when leaders communicate openly. The delegates have voted. The members are waiting. The nation is watching. The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress now has an opportunity to reinforce public confidence by acting swiftly in the interest of transparency and democratic accountability’’.

The statement signed by the Coordinator of Advocate for Transparency, Accountability, and Democratic Participation, Dr. Benedict Ferife urged the national leadership of the party to reassure members and the Nigerian public that the integrity of the electoral process remains fully protected.

The statement released in Ozoro advised the national leadership of the party to demonstrate, through action, the democratic values that have positioned the NDC as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Titled ‘’Transparency Delayed Is Confidence Tested’’, the party stakeholders said the NDC emerged with a promise to Nigerians.

‘’The NDC emerged with a promise of transparency, accountability, internal democracy, and a genuine departure from the political practices that have weakened public confidence in our democratic institutions. It is this promise that has attracted the support, hope, and commitment of many Nigerians seeking a new political direction’’.

According to the statement, party faithful, delegates, supporters, and observers are increasingly anxious over the absence of an official declaration of results more than twenty-four hours after voting was concluded.

‘’While we recognize that verification and administrative procedures may be necessary, transparency demands that the party keeps its members and supporters adequately informed. Silence and prolonged delays, however unintended, can create uncertainty and fuel speculation, thereby undermining confidence in an otherwise credible process’’.

The stakeholders called for openness, prompt communication and reassurance.

‘’This appeal is not intended to question the integrity of the primary election. Rather, it is a call for openness, prompt communication, and reassurance to the thousands of members and supporters who participated in and closely followed the exercise. This appeal is made in good faith and in the best interest of the party, its members, and the democratic aspirations of Nigerians’’.

The Provisionary Committee of the proposed Nigerian Coast Guard (PC-NCG) has maintained that Nigeria’s struggle to establish a Coast Guard is not a failure of today’s leaders, but a 170-year structural problem that began in 1748 with the British Marine Department, which combined civilian safety and military defence under one roof.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the Director of Communications & Public Affairs, Dr. Kiyaramo Piriye, quoted Capt. Noah Ichaba, Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of PC-NCG, as saying the 1914 amalgamation and creation of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA in 1955 continued the same pattern. Mariners from the old Marine Department were seconded to NPA and kept performing mixed duties of port operations, coastal safety, and security.

“When the Nigerian Naval Force was established on March 26, 1956 through Sessional Paper No. 6, those same ex-Mariner personnel were transferred to pioneer the new Navy,” Capt. Ichaba recalled. “The critical distinction was never made. The Navy was tasked with both military defence and civilian maritime law enforcement, safety, and security, while no independent Coast Guard was created.”

He added that this colonial-era design created overlapping mandates and institutional rivalry that persist today. “Every attempt to legislate a Coast Guard has run into the same wall: a system built to fuse roles instead of separate them.

“Present-day lawmakers, ministers, and agencies inherited this confusion. They did not create it,” he stated.

The statement noted that after the dissolution of the Marine Department in 1887, Nigeria got the NPA, Inland Waterways Authority, and Nigerian Naval Force, but no separate Coast Guard. This left the Navy handling warfare, territorial defence, and civilian duties like search-and-rescue and environmental protection.

“The resistance we see today is not about individuals. It is about 170 years of entrenched power dynamics and role confusion built into the system. Today’s leaders are dealing with a colonial blueprint that never separated civilian maritime safety from military defence,” Dr. Kiyaramo quoted Capt. Ichaba as saying.

With piracy, illegal fishing, oil theft, and drownings threatening Nigeria’s waters and blue economy, PC-NCG said the solution is structural clarity, not blame.

“In most coastal nations, the Navy handles military defence and territorial integrity, while the Coast Guard handles civilian duties such as maritime law enforcement, safety, search-and-rescue, and environmental protection. Both agencies complement each other,” Capt. Ichaba said.

“Until we address this 170-year structural error, Nigeria’s blue economy and coastal lives will remain at risk. The National Assembly has to pass the Nigerian Coast Guard Act now; for it to perform it’s distinct functions of maritime law enforcement so both agencies can secure Nigeria’s coast,” the statement concluded.

He said “It’s not a hidden fact that there are issues of leadership in our party which has made both members and aspiring aspirants to have some level of uncertainty.”

“The leadership of the labour party by the court injunction picked a National Caretaker Chairman in the person of Senator Esther Usman Nenadi to pilot party for now,Labour party has since after the 2023 general Election has been bedevil by individuals who didn’t mean well for Labour Party and this that resulted in the removal of the legitimate National Chairman Barr.Julius Abure.”

He however confirmed that the State and National Assembly primaries are taking place nationwide despite the Court imposed National Caretaker Chairman which has divide the once united political party.

He noted that as a law abiding party and in recognition of the fact that Usman Nenadi is at the National INEC portal, “In 30 States, congresses were held on December 2, 4 and 6 respectively. Our names are at both the State and National levels of INEC which the Party leadership under Sen.Nenadi should also recognized.”

He expressed confidence that the Barr. Julius Abure led leadership has filed to the Supreme court to challenge the outcome of the Court of Appeal judgement of April 21,2026, “We are hoping and trusting God that the Supreme Court will come out with the true Judgement and return Barr.Julius Abure as the legitimate and constitutionally elected National Chairman.”

“As it did on the 22nd of May 2026 affirming Gombe -Led SDP leadership ,nullifying the previous Appeal Court Ruling )Which means that a Caretaker Committee leadership of a political party cannot dissolve an existing constitutional elected leadership of a political party.”

“As we gathered here today for the primaries of the authentic leadership of labour party Bayelsa State.I urge us to conduct ourselves for a peaceful and fruitful party Primaries to elect our flag bearers for the forthcoming general elections.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, SEA, through Dr. Felix Tuodolo, announced that the matters would come up for hearing at the Federal High Court, Yenagoa Judicial Division, sitting at Court 1, Onopa, by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026.

According to the group, the suits are focused on issues relating to resource control for the Ijaw people and the Niger Delta region, as well as the demand for the creation of twenty-four additional local government areas for Bayelsa State.

Dr. Tuodolo urged supporters, stakeholders and advocates of the cause to be present in court to demonstrate solidarity and commitment to the struggle.

He noted that the issues before the court are of significant importance to the Ijaw nation and the wider Niger Delta region, stressing that collective participation would strengthen the campaign for justice and equitable development.

The SEA spokesman recalled previous mass mobilisations by supporters of the cause and expressed confidence that the people would once again rally behind the legal action.

“This is our struggle. We have done it before and we can do it again. Let us make our efforts count by turning out en masse to support the cause,” he stated.

The Supreme Egbesu Assembly has been one of the prominent socio-cultural organisations championing issues affecting the Ijaw people, including resource ownership, environmental justice, political representation and equitable distribution of national resources.

The outcome of the court proceedings is expected to attract considerable attention from stakeholders across Bayelsa State and the Niger Delta region, given the far-reaching implications of the issues under litigation.

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in Uyo, Ward 7 have concluded its emergency congress with a resolution to rally round its candidates gunning for various political offices ahead of the 2027 general elections in the area.

The meeting held at the instance of Engr Augustine Udoh, the political leader of the Ward, was attended by party stalwarts, including ward executives and party elders in Ward 9 and beyond.

Addressing party faithfuls‎ at the gathering, Engr Augustine Udoh who doubles an Entrepreneur charged members to rise to the challenge posed by the current inept leadership style of the APC led administration in the State under Pastor Umo Bassey Eno and that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the centre.

Praising the Supreme Court for restoring the hope of the opposition parties in Nigeria through the recent verdict that restored the Turaki led faction of the party, he expressed confidence that the will of the people will prevail at the 2027 general elections in the country.

‎He emphatically stated that the future of PDP in Nigeria is still bright and there’s hope that PDP will bounce back with a better package for Nigerians, stressing that the party’s crisis were caused by those who lacked good will for the people and PDP in particular, hence resort to perpetrating disunity, disharmony and disaffection among party members.
‎
According to him, the current hardship, insecurity and killings arising from the poor economic reforms of the Tinubu led administration in Nigeria are indications that the country can never be transformed should the APC remain in power.
‎
‎Engr Udoh hinted further that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led Government has failed in fulfilling its campaign promises, while reassuring the people that PDP is working round the clock to produce credible candidates that will wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress at the State and National levels, come 2027.

‎As Nigerians prepare for the forthcoming general elections, he urged the party stalwarts to work in one accord, develop good policies and ideologies that will change the dynamics of governance for people at the State and National levels.

Responding on behalf of the party stalwarts, Elder Joseph Okon applauded the leadership prowess of the political leader and ward executives for thinking it wise to organise the meeting and reassured them of their readiness to stand behind candidates of the party ahead of the general elections.

Okon, like others, said they are prepared to repeat the 2011 feat in Uyo, where Hon Edwin Joseph had emerged against all odds, as the sole opposition member representing Uyo State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, on the platform of the ACN.

Speaking separately, Comrade Owoidoho alias Okpo, Mrs Blessing Marcel and Rebecca Okon passed a vote of confidence on the leadership capacity of the political leader, Engr Augustine Udoh for his firm belief for the PDP in Uyo and State at large.

The trio therefore reassured the leadership of the party in the area of their readiness to work for success of PDP in Uyo and the State at large, as they file out to produce candidates for the 2027 general elections in the State.

The event, held at the school’s conference hall, attracted a large number of female students who participated actively in the awareness programme aimed at promoting healthy menstrual practices and improving knowledge of reproductive health among adolescent girls.

Speaking during the programme, the Caucus Leader of NARD South-South, Dr. Margaret Egan Erhunmwunsee, said the initiative was designed to educate young girls on menstrual hygiene management, reproductive health, and the importance of developing positive health-seeking behaviours.

She explained that menstruation is a natural biological process and emphasized the need for proper hygiene during menstrual periods. Dr. Erhunmwunsee also demonstrated the correct use of sanitary pads and proper disposal methods to help the students maintain good personal hygiene.

According to her, understanding menstruation and reproductive health is essential for every young girl as it prepares them for adulthood and motherhood. She encouraged the students to seek professional medical advice whenever they experience health challenges and to prioritize their overall well-being.

Also speaking, former Welfare Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Dr. Emem Ekwere, described menstruation, commonly referred to as a period, as a normal and natural process experienced by girls and women of reproductive age.

She noted that menstruation is neither a disease nor something to be ashamed of, explaining that the menstrual cycle is the body’s natural preparation for a possible pregnancy. When pregnancy does not occur, the lining of the uterus is shed through menstruation.

Dr. Ekwere stated that a normal menstrual cycle ranges between 21 and 35 days, while menstrual bleeding typically lasts between two and seven days. She highlighted common symptoms associated with menstruation, including lower abdominal pain, back pain, headaches, mood changes, fatigue, and weakness.

She advised the students to seek medical attention whenever symptoms become severe and stressed the importance of changing sanitary pads every four to six hours, bathing regularly, and keeping the genital area clean using only clean water.

In her remarks, the Secretary of the Resident Doctors Association in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Comfort Eno, clarified misconceptions surrounding menstruation, explaining that menstrual blood is not “bad blood” but a natural process through which the body sheds the lining of the uterus each month.

The doctors urged the students to embrace healthy menstrual practices, maintain good personal hygiene, and avoid stigma associated with menstruation. They also encouraged them to become advocates of menstrual health awareness among their peers and within their communities.

The outreach programme formed part of activities marking Menstrual Hygiene Day and underscored the commitment of NARD South-South and the Eliora Foundation to promoting the health and well-being of adolescent girls across the region.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dimie Ogoina, disclosed this during an appearance on Talk to Bayelsa, describing the approval granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a significant achievement for the institution and a testament to its rapid growth and commitment to excellence.

Professor Ogoina explained that the full accreditation, which was granted in April 2026, followed years of deliberate investments in qualified manpower, modern infrastructure, and clinical training facilities aimed at meeting national and international standards in medical education.

According to him, the accreditation has further enhanced the university’s credibility and reputation, positioning it as one of the emerging centres of excellence in medical and health sciences education in Nigeria and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the Bayelsa State Government for its unwavering support, noting that the institution’s progress would not have been possible without sustained investments in infrastructure development, staff recruitment, research, and academic expansion
.
He recalled that the university was established to address the shortage of specialised healthcare professionals in Nigeria and the Niger Delta region, adding that it currently offers programmes in key health-related disciplines, including Radiography, Optometry, Physiotherapy, Public Health, Community Health, Nursing Science, and other allied health sciences.

Professor Ogoina further revealed that the university has embraced innovation-driven learning by establishing state-of-the-art facilities such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) laboratories to enhance teaching, learning, and clinical simulations for students.

On infrastructure development, he disclosed that the ongoing development of the university’s permanent campus at Sampou in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area would significantly ease pressure on existing facilities at the Yenagoa campus. He added that additional student hostels being constructed through the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) would help improve accommodation and welfare for students.

Addressing concerns over admission standards and tuition fees, Professor Ogoina maintained that the university remains committed to merit-based admissions and the maintenance of global best practices in medical education.

He also noted that Bayelsa State indigenes currently enjoy a 50 per cent tuition fee rebate, while students can access various government-backed educational loans and scholarship schemes designed to make quality medical education more affordable and accessible.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the university would continue to expand its academic offerings and strengthen its contribution to healthcare delivery, research, and human capital development in Bayelsa State and Nigeria as a whole.

The event, which attracted members of the press, legal luminaries, and prominent Nigerians, was marked by a press conference addressed by the Branch Chairman, Mr. Clement Bibisa Kekemeke.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Kekemeke expressed gratitude to the key individuals and institutions whose support has been critical to the growth and accomplishments of the Branch. Special recognition was given to the Chairman of the Law Week Plenary Session, former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, GCON, for making adjustments to chair the session. The NBA also acknowledged the keynote speaker, Professor PLO Lumumba, for accepting the invitation despite his demanding schedule.

The Branch further thanked the Bayelsa State Government, led by Governor Senator Douye Diri, for its unwavering support and partnership, describing it as instrumental to the Branch’s growth. Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, PhD, Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), was also lauded for his dedication to public service and support for the legal profession, particularly in establishing the Chief October Lokpobiri Bar Centre at the State High Court Complex.

The NBA Yenagoa Branch also expressed appreciation to the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Hon. Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Biriyai Dambo, SAN, as well as corporate partners including High Chief Matthew Tonlagha of Maton Engineering Nigeria Limited and Chief Dr. Samuel Ogbuku of the Niger Delta Development Commission. The contributions of the Plenary Session panelists—including Justice B.M. Ugo of the Court of Appeal, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Dele Adesina, SAN, and others—were recognized for their expertise and support.

The 2026 Law Week, themed “Securing the Future”, underscores the legal profession’s role in safeguarding society, constitutional order, and national stability. “At a time when governance structures, public trust, and democratic institutions are under mounting strain, the theme calls upon the Bar to transcend technical practice and embrace its role as an active steward of society,” Mr. Kekemeke stated.

Professor PLO Lumumba will deliver the keynote address on “Sustainable National Assets Protection in Africa: Opportunities, Risks and Regulatory Pathways”, offering a continental perspective on governance, regulatory compliance, and public accountability. The plenary session, titled “National Assets Protection: Nigeria’s Shared Responsibility”, will also feature discussions on the collaboration between statutory organizations, the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and private security operators.

Other highlights of the Law Week include the annual Law Dinner on Saturday, 6th June 2026, at MASC Haven Event Centre, designed for networking, knowledge sharing, and engagement with industry leaders. In line with social responsibility, the Branch will host a legal clinic in Yenagoa–Ovom Community and visit Martha’s Home for the Elderly.

The NBA Yenagoa Branch emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights. Mr. Kekemeke also addressed rising concerns over police brutality, noting that the NBA, through its Human Rights Committee, will continue to advocate for justice and accountability.

The Law Week plenary session is scheduled for Friday, 5th June 2026, at the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB) Conference Hall, providing participants with a state-of-the-art environment to engage fully with the program.

Mr. Kekemeke concluded by urging all participants to take full advantage of the week’s activities, describing the event as an opportunity to advance legal knowledge, uphold justice, and collectively secure the future of Nigeria.
