Review: Ryan Adams for ACL TV

Attending a taping for Austin City Limits Television is always a special experience. I feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity to attend these performances and it is not something I take for granted. Last night I had the chance to see Ryan Adams' perforn for the 40th season of ACL TV and it was magical. It was such a unique experience that there were moments that felt completely surreal. Before the performance, all of the house music was theme songs to television shows. I didn't think much of it when the theme to Fresh Prince of Bel Air was playing but when I returned from getting a drink and noticed that the theme from Doogie Howser M.D. was on the PA, it was clear that Ryan Adams was fucking with us. Get it? ACL is a TV show.

The stage was set for an acoustic performance. There was a stool, with a guitar mic and a vocal mic on a stand alongside a decorative table, which had a little lamp and a votive candle. On the other side of the stage, there was a similar microphone setup for a standing performance. Behind the stool there were 4 acoustic guitars on stands. As is tradition, the show's executive producer came out to greet the crowd and give us a little preview of what was about to happen, complete with the "put your phone away" rule. We were told that Adams was planning an acoustic set followed by an electric set. I had heard rumblings of this already but was very excited to hear the rumors were true.

Adams ambled on the stage around 8pm to little fanfare, he acknowledged the audience with a little wave of one hand while holding a cup of hot tea in the other. He was dressed like he just came from the photo shoot for his latest album cover. Tight denim pants, tight denim jacket with a vintage tee complete with unkempt hair. I wish I had a transcript of the speeches last night because there were many and they were fantastic. Adams was witty, self-deprecating and very relaxed. He chatted with the crowd, sharing quirky tidbits of stories, which may or may not have actually inspired his songs.

When the acoustic set started there was a moment when I thought to myself, that I don't know if I've ever heard such quiet from such a large number of people. Part of what makes the ACL TV atmosphere so special is the reverence for the moment in time in which this performance is taking place. It's a concert but it's not just any concert. No one has their phones out, people are drinking but the bars inside the venue were not operational during the performance.

I don't know a lot about microphones or musical equipment but the mics being used reminded me of old radio announcer microphones. Those square mics that you see on David Letterman's desk. Whatever that style is allowed Adams to stand back away from the mic itself, with the added reverb it gave the vocals an amazingly ethereal floating texture that added to the overall transcendence of the experience. At one point between songs Adams joked that he needs the reverb to help him deal with the sound of his own voice. He also made several quips referring to how depressing his songs are, even alluding/suggesting that they could be the perfect soundtrack for anti-depression pharmaceuticals.

The opening set weaved together songs, jokes, stories, on-stage guitar tuning, inappropriate humor, crowd interaction and advice to young fans into a 70-minute performance piece. There were many mentions of how cold the room was as well, which relates to all of the guitar tuning. Adams suggested that guitar strings & penises react similarly in cold environments. Hence, why his guitars kept going out of tune. A fact, which I'm sure bothered Mr. Adams more than it bothered his audience.

Adams also singled-out, former No Depression editor and current Austin American-Statesman writer, Peter Blackstock during both is acoustic and electric sets. My sources tell me that Adams and Blackstock have a great relationship but based on a few of Adams' comments, it seems as though he still hasn't forgotten a review of Gold that Mr. Blackstock wrote many years ago. Don't get me wrong, the comments were not hostile but the ribbing was consistent. During the electric set, Adams actually false-started a song when he noticed Blackstock yawning. He stopped the tune and suggested that Blackstock join him in a jog the following morning to see who's yawning then.

During an acoustic cover of Bryan Adams' Run To You, a fan started laughing at the absurdity of Ryan Adams covering Bryan Adams. Adams turned toward that side of the crowd mid-song and remarked that he took this cover very seriously before launching into the chorus again. That cover ended the acoustic set around 9:15pm. There was a 20-minute break while the stage was reset for the electric set.

The lead single from Ryan Adams' eponymous new LP, Gimme Something Good, was the only song that appeared in both sets. It was great to hear the two interpretations of the song, the acoustic one pleading while the electric one felt more demanding. Even though Adams was joined by a full 4-piece band for the second set, it still felt like his show. This was not Adams' more jam-y backing band, The Cardinals. The backing band for his electric set was dubbed, The Shining, which is a group of four incredible session players (including L.A.-based Mike Viola) who pushed out incredibly tight renditions of all the songs you'd want to hear at a Ryan Adams show.

The photo I posted of the set lists isn't entirely accurate. The acoustic set was slightly rearranged and a song or two was eliminated, but Adams curated a set list that spanned his solo career flawlessly. Another special crowd moment came at the conclusion of When the Stars Go Blue when Adams noticed, Austin artist and personal friend, Nakia wiping tears from his eyes in the front row. He asked, "Are you crying bro?" When Nakia nodded in affirmation, Adams said, "I've gotta give you a hug." He walked toward the front of the stage and Nakia did too and they hugged it out. Adams mentioned that the display of emotion meant a lot to him and then he made a self-deprecating joke about not have feelings himself.

In a way last night's stage banter highlights were just as interesting/important to the experience as the song performance moments. It felt like Ryan Adams was hosting us. He wasn't content to simply go down a set list and crank out the tunes. He wanted to tell us which Doctor Who was his favorite (number 4) and how some of his songs sound like certain Scritti Politti songs or how a friend's drunken off-handed remark about members of REM having grey (or greying) pubes inspired a lyric. He talked about how he doesn't drink anymore and when he did he was an asshole. He poked fun at his reputation for being difficult to work with. Adams recounted a conversation between himself and his longtime manager when he was at his worst. He asked his manager why he even wanted to manage him to which he responded, "Because I like a challenge." Then he dedicated a song to the manager, while simultaneously suggesting that it would be too soft rock for Anne Murray. The song in question was Desire from Adams' Demolition.

It's hard for me to nail down "set highlights" because Ryan Adams music is so personal for every listener. My highlights were all songs that meant the most to me and I'm sure your highlights would be the same. I can tell you that I've been singing Gimme Something Good, Fix It & Come Pick Me Up all day but I can also tell you that My Winding Wheel & Sweet Carolina brought tears to my eyes.

With three and half hours worth of material, I'll be curious to see how last night's experience will be packaged for television. Part of me thinks that Adams did the two separate sets so he could scrap his least favorite completely. There are also songs that have lyrical content that wouldn't be suitable for PBS, songs that had a story or comment to the audience in the middle and even a song with a guitar tune in the middle of it. In other words, the majority of what happened last night will never resurface for a television audience and that's ok with me because I was lucky enough to be there. If you weren't there last night, you're still in for a treat when Ryan Adams and Jenny Lewis share an hour of television on your local PBS station in the fall/winter.

By the way, I never mentioned it but in the photo of the set lists the numbered one (on the right) was the intended acoustic set and the other is the electric set. As I mentioned a song or two was stricken and/or played in a different order from the acoustic set but I believe the electric set is fully accurate.

Y'all, I feel like such a bonehead. I had the extraordinary pleasure to attend Sam Smith's performance for Austin City Limits Television, on the eve of Weekend One of ACL Festival (pictured above). The lovely Mr. S. was kind enough to wrote a beautiful review, which I left in the blog queue unpublished. So, while this isn't super-timely, it's still a great review and it was still an amazing experience, which you'll be able to watch on your local PBS station within the next few months!

Disclosure teamed up with Sam Smith back in late 2012 to release "Latch" in the UK and, at the time, it was just another great dance tune from overseas with an unknown vocalist that was unlikely to make waves stateside. What a strange, long trip it's been. "Latch" eventually started to earn radio airplay here in the US early this year and it eventually peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. It helped Disclosure establish themselves as artists and producers to watch and was the perfect set up to introduce American audiences to Mr. Smith. By the time his solo debut album "In The Lonely Hour" came out in here in July, it entered the album charts at number 2 and gave him a much higher profile than the electronic duo.

It didn't hurt that Smith has remained dedicated to breaking the US market by doing countless press interviews, tour dates and television appearances. Hitting town for the Austin City Limits festival, he dropped by the Moody Theater to record an episode for ACL's 40th season on PBS this fall. Backed by a 5-piece band and 3 powerful backing vocalists, Smith powered through a full set of tunes from his debut record and even threw a few choice covers into the mix.

Austin Bloggy & I had heard a rumor that he was feeling a little under the weather before the taping began, but if that was true it was completely undetectable from an audience member's point of view. Things kicked off with "Nirvana" and "Together." We've been lucky to attend several recent tapings and the energy from the crowd was palpable, much higher and excited than other recent audiences. It reflected how lucky everybody felt to be seeing an artist on the rise in such a big way, with the talent to match the success. It was also fun to see several children in crowd, including several families with young girls who were singing along to all the songs, in the front row.

"It is so hot here. My English skin can't handle this," he exclaimed. While I'm not attending the festival until next weekend, he must have flat-out melted on the festival stage the following day! Before heading into more tunes, he discussed "In The Lonely Hour" and how it had already changed his life so much. Last year, he was working in a British pub where his tasks included cleaning the bathrooms.

Now, he's touring the world in perfectly tailored suits and singing songs of unrequited love that connect with listeners from all backgrounds and orientations through the universality of the lyrics. Even though Smith is an out gay man, his tracks are more ambiguous (at least so far). As a gay man myself, I suppose the only thing that made me cringe a little was during a cover of Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" - when the word "boy" is more innocuously replaced by "you." Something so small, if left in place, could actually become a powerful statement. Instead, it's softened a little bit and I can't help but feel as though that is to not offend a broader audience. Maybe, at the end of the day, that is truly progress after all?

The set pushed into more upbeat territory after Smith confessed that, like with the work of Ms. Houston, he really only listens to female divas when he has music on in his personal life. That made his perfect mash-up of "Money On My Mind" with the added chorus of CeCe Peniston's "Finally" all the more confessional. Things appeared to be over after a too-brief 9 songs, but then Smith and the band returned for an encore that kicked off with his slower arrangement of "Latch," which appears as a bonus track on the Deluxe Edition of his debut record.

Not surprisingly, the performance ended with the song that solidified his success as a solo artist here in America. "Stay With Me" peaked at number two on the US singles charts and has become one of the year's biggest singles. As it started, the crowd rose to its feet and sang along with every word. It's safe to say that this won't be the last time that Smith graces the Austin City Limits stage. We're already looking forward to his next visit.

A broadcast date has not yet been set for Sam Smith's performance, but it will air this fall on PBS as part of the 40th Season of Austin City Limits, airing locally on KLRU.

Jenny Lewis for Austin City Limits TV

This evening I had the pleasure of seeing Jenny Lewis' first of five Austin-area performances over the next two weeks. Tonight she returned to the Austin City Limits Television stage in advance of her return to the ACL Festival Stage. The last time Ms. Lewis performed for ACL TV was with her, now defunct, band Rilo Kiley, which lead many of us to speculate that she wouldn't be performing any songs by her former band but we were wrong. Oh, how very wrong we were. As you can see from the setlist above, the night started with a somewhat slower, somewhat funkier take on Silver Linings then moved right into Rise Up with Fists. For a J. Lew fan like me, I was already in heaven.

Before tonight's performance I ran into my friend Nakia, who mentioned that he doesn't like how Jenny Lewis gets shoved into an Americana/Alt-Country box and he objected to classifying her in that way. It got me thinking as I listened to the set, what sort of music is this? It's not really country, it's not really rock, it's not folk or blues and it's sort of all of it at the same time. It's whatever kind of music Bonnie Raitt, Linda Rondstat or Stevie Nicks play. I tried to take notes during the set to help me write this review and under The New Messiah I wrote, "Honky Tonk Gospel Funk Revival," which kind of sums things up.

The New Messiah was definitely a set highlight but I feel like it might get cut from the broadcast just for sheer length. I could also see it being the number they run the credits over. Regardless of how it ends up in your living room, it gave me chills to hear it in person. Bad Man's World was another highlight for me. The song is so sparse, bluesy and plaintive. It really shows off Jenny Lewis' crystal clear vocal tone and the woman who sang harmonies with her on that tune was incredible. It sounded like Jenny said her name was "Allie Prass?" but nothing came up when I tried to fact check that so you'll just have to believe me I suppose.

The song Late Bloomer was one which stood out to me as a great example of what makes Jenny Lewis so great. The song is hooky, it sounds instantly classic and it's a movie in a three and half minute tune. There are many things to admire about Lewis' songwriting. Her ability to make horrible things sound beautiful, her gift for turning a phrase and her ability to spin a tale are just a few.

Jenny Lewis closed her set with a gorgeous version of Acid Tongue, with herself, a guitar and her 5-piece band + Jonathan Rice singing harmonies around a single microphone. That song is already incredibly powerful but tonight's performance brought a tear to my eye. That was followed by an encore of With Arms Outstretched performed by Lewis and two of the woman from her band.

Tonight's performance will be a part of Austin City Limits Television's 40th Season on PBS. The season premiers this Saturday, October 4th with Beck but don't miss the special tribute to the show airing the evening prior. I suspect the episode with Jenny Lewis will be split with another artist and I'll be curious to see who she is paired with. I know Ryan Adams will be taping for the 40th Season as well but I feel like he might get a full hour? I don't know how those things are decided.

Review: Future Islands at ACL TV

Last night I joined my fellow Austin Hipsteratti to witness the live performance of Future Islands committed to "tape" for Austin City Limits Television. As many of you know, I am fortunate to be able to attend many of these tapings and I can tell you the best ones are by artists who have an obvious reverence for the show. It's a very special experience for the audience and the performer to be at an ACL TV taping. For people like me who grew up in rural parts of the country, ACL TV was a connection to a music world that seemed so far away. It existed in its own reality inside the television. When an artist recognizes that their performance for the show exists within an important historical spectrum, you can feel that energy coming from the stage.

I caught Future Islands' most recent performance at the Mohawk earlier this year and I had a great time at the show. However, they seem to be a very divisive band even within my own household and it seems the cause for such passionate reactions on both ends of the spectrum is directly related to the lead-singer, Sam. Future Islands is four people. There is a keyboardist/sampler/sequencer dude, there's a drummer (who plays with headphones), there's a bass player and there's a singer. Not counting the vocals, they are a 3-piece band who pumps out some really tight New Wave music. If they had no vocalist, or a different vocalist they would still be a good band. Sam is that X factor. His vocals shift from balladeer to hardcore singer in a moments notice. The songs lyrics are very personal and they are delivered with an over-the-top passion. Sam's performance has elements of an evangelical preacher, an interpretive dancer and a Shakespearian actor. He emotes, he gyrates, he sometimes sounds like Cookie Monster and he beats his chest like Tarzan. This may not be the most appealing description but to someone like me, who's a fan, all of this comes together to create an incredibly compelling performance.

Even in the moments that I can't take Sam seriously, I can't take my eyes off of him. He manages to be incredibly sexy and powerful but still vulnerable and a bit weird. When the band took the stage, I remarked how they looked like substitute teachers and the person next to me said, "That's what I love about him." There's something about this band that makes you want to root for them. I understand the detractors. Sometimes it's hard to take the performance seriously because it is so over the top. Sometimes the cookie monster voice can take you out of the experience but I feel like part of the point of music is to escape your reality and enter into the reality of that moment. Whether you like them or not, Future Islands create their own musical reality. I'm so excited that last night's performance will be beamed to public television stations across the country so some kid in rural wherever can be a part of Future Islands' reality for 30 minutes.

I should also note, because many of you who are reading this already know, that my beloved Mr. S. enjoyed himself more than he would ever admit. After their show at the Mohawk he was not ready to pledge his allegiance to the flag of Future Islands and he still isn't BUT last night's performance for ACL TV was a much more controlled performance than the set at the Mohawk. I don't think the band held anything back for ACL TV but I do feel like they were consciously more refined for the larger audience.

Last night's taping will be part of the 40th Season of ACL TV, which will premiere next month with an episode featuring Beck. I was lucky enough to attend that taping as well, and I can tell you that it's a greatest hits set rather than a check-out my new LP set. I love Beck's new LP and was fully prepared to be immersed in sad Beck but getting funky Mixed Bizness Beck is NEVER a bad thing.

Jungle at Mohawk

Wednesday night I took a brief respite from the confines of my apartment to watch a band who came all the way from England to perform at the Mohawk. I'm not sure if the show was fully sold out but it certainly felt like there were enough people present. I left the apartment late so I did not arrive in time to catch any of the support acts. Sorry y'all, I'm sure you were great I know I'll be kicking myself in the future for missing you. I entered on the numbered street side (11th?), which ended up being a stupid way to come in because I watched the show from the ground level near the merch booth. Before the merch booth was there, it was my favorite spot to watch an outside show at the Mohawk. For my money, the ground-level of the Mohawk anywhere under the roof gives you the best sound. It's a tricky place to plant though because people are always trying to move in every direction there. I usually try to wedge myself against a wall, like I'm in a rock n roll timeout. I say all of this because Jungle sounded impeccable. Most of their songs have four people singing all at once, which can be a hot mess in a live setting. With seven people on the stage and at least four of them singing, I was incredibly impressed with how balanced everything was. Throughout the first song I assumed they were performing with a backing track because they sounded so good but eventually I started to believe they're just that tight.

I had heard good things about Jungle's debut LP, and I knew they earned a lot of buzz at SXSW. I was even able to hear them for a few minutes during Lollapalooza but they certainly lived up to the hype. Their sound draws you in, and as the set progressed you could feel the energy of the crowd elevating. As someone who likes dance and R&B music, I'm really excited about this indie(ish) movement in which the groove is king. Artists like How to Dress Well, FKA Twigs, Jessy Lanza, Chet Faker and inc. are all turning R&B on its head. Stripping the style down to the essence of the groove. Jungle is certainly coming from a more traditional space than the artists I just listed but the groove is still king. When their set started, I was immediately reminded of LCD Soundsystem's Nike Run Mix aka 45:33. Since that mix is intended for a workout, it starts with a sort of warm-up bpm. Whatever the bpm is in Part 2 of that mix, that's Jungle's sweet spot.

After a few songs I dubbed Jungle's sound Chillwave Bee Gees, which kind of means nothing and kind of means everything. There's a band from Australia called, Movement who I think fits this mold as well. It's not straight-up disco, it's more loungey than disco and it's not straight-up R&B either. Whatever you do or don't want to call it, it sounds good and Jungle sounded great playing it. They sounded incredibly slick and I don't expect they'll be doing small club tours for very long. Granted I was on the ground level so I couldn't see the whole crowd but everyone I could see what feelin some type a way about Jungle.

If you're a fan of any of the artist I've listed in this post, you should check out all of the other artists I listed. They don't all sound alike and some are more challenging than others but I feel like if you can appreciate one of them you can appreciate all of them.

Should I Leave the House Tonight?

Well, here we are. I'm dusting some digital cobwebs off of Austin Bloggy Limits because there's a bunch of good shows happening this weekend and if I don't post about them, I'll forget everything I wanted to see. Places you may or may not see me this evening include: Beerland, Hotel Vegas, Cheer-Up Charlies or My Couch.

All of these venues offer an array of positive reasons to attend the festivities they are hosting this evening. Beerland has Jonly Bonly, Trustees, Party Girl and Borzoi tonight. These bands may not be household names to you but they all offer the sort of visceral, authentic rock 'n roll experience I desire and deserve on a dreary night like tonight. Also, I've really enjoyed what I've heard from Put Together, the new LP from Jonly Bonly and I want to see those songs performed live.

Hotel Vegas also has a killer line-up tonight, which also features local bands with brand new records. Spray Paint's new LP, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, won't be released until next week but you can stream it right now via Stereogum and I have a feeling it MIGHT be available for purchase at tonight's gig. The Rebel is performing tonight in support of their new LP, K Rot, which you purchase online or in person right now. Tonight's Hotel Vegas gig isn't listed as an LP release show for John Wesley Coleman because he already did that but his latest, The Love That You Own is also a new release. Damn y'all! What's with all the new releases in September? All this talk of new releases made me lose track of the line-up, which also includes Ghetto Ghouls and Marriage. If you're accustom to very sterile, controlled concert experiences you should come to this show just so you can see how rock is supposed to be experienced.

Tonight's show at Cheer-Up Charlies ALSO features lots of great Austin bands with recent music releases. This show explores the more pop-music leaning side of Austin's rock music scene, which I'm also a big fan of. If my suggestions up to this point have seemed a bit "noisy" to your delicate aesthetic, then this venue might be a more appropriate choice for you this evening. There are THIRTEEN bands on the line-up for this event but at this point several of them have already performed. If I end up here tonight, I'll want to be there by 9:30 to catch Growl but the line-up is solid from top to bottom.

No Years by Growl

The fourth option I presented was My Couch, which features the ability to sit around in my underwear watching pre-recorded television, movies, access to pre-purchased beverages and snacks including alcohol. It does not require me to ride the bus, find a parking spot, deal with rain, make awkward conversation or walk. So, as you can see there are lots of excellent ways for me to spend my evening. What are you up to tonight? Should we do shots? Did you notice I started this post with the idea of highlighting stuff happening all weekend but then I only made it through tonight? You're welcome.

Did I fall asleep? What's been happening with you lately? I feel like we never see each other, and it's totally my fault. I don't even know where to begin and I feel like in the interest of TLDR we should just pretend nothing happened and talk about today. That's what old friends do. You don't have to re-hash everything, you just pick-up where you left off. So, let's start there shall we?

The Both tour is back in Austin, this time they're playing the Mohawk. I expect by the time you're reading this, tickets will be sold-out but if they're not, you should get yourself some. The last time Aimee Mann and Ted Leo played Austin, they were at the Paramount- a much more austere setting. I'll be interested to hear people's thoughts who were fortunate enough to attend both the theater and club performances.

I'd also like to draw your attention to the line-up at Cheer-Up Charlies Saturday night, which starts with The Bad Lovers and finishes with A Giant Dog. Throw in some excellent food-truck grub, plenty of breezy outdoor spaces to relax and reasonably-priced beer and you pretty much can't go wrong.

In the upcoming documentary 20,000 Days On Earth, Nick Cave discusses his love for performing live, but indicates that he loves to focus on a small handful of people from the front row and frighten them. Hardcore fans of the Bad Seeds are not easily scared, but this revelation did make me curious about how his taping in the Austin City Limits studio would go on Sunday night. The perimeter of the stage is typically roped off to provide room for the camera operators to capture the performance, keeping the audience at a slight distance.

When we walked into the venue for the taping, there was a major change to the way that the stage was set up. Two small runways were jutting out from the front of the normal stage. Two cameras normally set up directly in front of the stage were moved back to risers near the soundboard. Two camera crane operators were also positioned further back than normal. It gave us a great vantage point from where we were sitting and made me even more excited to see how the set would unfold.

As the band emerged on to the stage, Mr. Cave almost immediately took advantage of the runways. From where we were sitting, it looked as though he was floating into the crowd. The set started off with “We Real Cool” and “Jubilee Street”, two back-to-back songs from the band’s most recent album Push The Sky Away. Cave strutted around, punctuating the lyrics with the brazen demeanor of a preacher warning his flock of the fire and brimstone they’re facing. The first sign that the band would be digging deeper into their catalog came when they started to play “Tupelo,” their 1985 single from The Firstborn Is Dead. One of the band’s most recognizable songs, 1994’s “Red Right Hand” shook the venue next, getting louder and moodier as it went on.

Cave’s first real attempt at banter came as he introduced “Mermaids” off of Push The Sky Away. He noted that the song would not make the television broadcast because of the lyric “I was the match that would fire up her snatch,” the logic of which seemed a little odd only because he had previously improvised a very loud ‘motherfucker’ during “Red Right Hand.” Feeding off the energy from the crowd pressed up against the stage, Cave became visibly annoyed by the rest of the audience who were seated quietly throughout the set. He tried to wave people from the stands down onto the floor, perhaps unaware that the only free space left at stage level was closed off for the cameras and crew members, chastising those of us who were seated as “lazy fuckers.”

The band dug a little deeper as the set continued, pulling out the title track to their 1984 debut album From Her To Eternity and both “Love Letter” and “God Is In The House” from 2001’s No More Shall We Part. One of the highlights in the documentary 20,000 Days On Earth is footage from a performance of “Higgs Boson Blues,” a dreamlike dirge that somehow manages to reference Robert Johnson and Miley Cyrus. It was a great success during the taping as well, enrapturing the crowd gathered at his feet as well as those who looked down more reverently from the balconies above. It paired nicely with “The Mercy Seat”, a 1988 single that is one of the band’s most iconic tunes.

What happened next caused a few truly frightened folks to flee early, but it was one of the highlights of the night for me. “Stagger Lee” originally appeared on 1996’s Murder Ballads and it is a traditional song that has been performed over the years by everybody from Pat Boone to the Black Keys. It’s safe to say that Nick Cave’s version is the most profane and wicked of them all. If “Mermaids” was somehow questionable for making it into the broadcast, the recorded footage of “Stagger Lee” is likely to be locked in a vault for all eternity. Cave continued to cavort between the two stage runways through the number, which has to be the most offensive song to ever be performed during a taping in the history of Austin City Limits. It was a few minutes in by the time he got to the lyrics “I’m a bad motherfucker, don’t you know and I’ll crawl over fifty good pussies just to get one fat boy’s asshole." By that moment, the crowd had thinned out a touch.

The die hard audience members went wild by the song’s conclusion and then we headed into what turned out to be the final song of the night, the title track to Push The Sky Away. There were visible indications that Cave continued to be annoyed by the audience (or other unknown factors) by the end of the song and the band waved goodbye, walking off stage. For a few tense moments, it seemed as though the crew was prepping for an encore, but then the chance of that happening ended almost as quickly as it began. The house lights came up and the show was officially over.

All-in-all, this incredible performance lasted for 90 solid minutes. Even though there are at least two fairly lengthy tracks that will need to be edited out of the final broadcast, that should still leave plenty for producers to work with. Here’s hoping that it turns into a full hour-long episode when it airs this fall as part of the show’s 40th season on PBS, likely around the same time that Drafthouse Films releases 20,000 Days On Earth into select theaters nationwide.

I Heart the Band: Gems

I'm not exactly sure when I first heard the band Gems because I feel like I was mixing them up with Gem Club and/or Gemini Club? Regardless, I was already following them on Soundcloud so they were at least marginally on my radar. Then a couple of weeks ago whilst trolling my Soundcloud stream, the song Scars came up. I was floored. The way the tracks drops in is huge. Then the vocal comes and it starts out as a fairly straight-forward R&B vocal until the chorus comes and it melts into ethereal Cocteau Twins arena. Is Trip-Hop being reborn? In a post-iPod world everyone listens to every genre and contemporary artists don't feel hemmed-in by what sounds they're supposed to use. Last night's show at Red 7 featured three bands who are blurring the line between indie-rock and R&B music.

Austin band, Young Pharaohs started things off last night. I had seen the name but had not heard them before. I was excited to discover that Austin has its own Vaporwave/PBR&B band. I don't really know what to call the genre so I'm borrowing two ideas that loosely apply here. Think How to Dress Well, Active Child, inc. and artists of that ilk. Basically it's pop music for serious people like me.

Gems performed the middle set last night. The band consists of one man and one woman both of whom have keyboards, pedals, sequencers and the there's even a guitar! There wasn't a lot of chatter from the stage but the band did seem humble and approachable when they did speak they were gracious and seemed generally excited about performing. When you hear pop music recorded it can be very deceiving so I always reserve full-on adoration until I see a live performance. I can assure you, Gems deserve full-on adoration. The vocals were incredible, they had great stage presence. They were very presentation conscious. They had white lights at their feet that were cued only occasionally to create dramatic stroboscopic lighting during key performance moments. They also had a projected image that eventually became animated. The audience was definitely drawn into the performance and a lot of people who were there for the headliners became and remained attentive throughout Gems' set. They don't have very much released, purchasable material at the moment but as soon as they get an LP or two under their belts, they'll be a headlining act. Last night they delivered one of my favorite sets of the year, I look forward to the band's return to Austin.

Hundred Waters headlined last night, touring in support of their newly-released LP, The Moon Rang Like a Bell. I appreciate the new LP and I thought their performance last night was good. I'm just somewhat reserved about overall adoration. Maybe if I hadn't been so head-over-heels for Gems' performance I would have enjoyed Hundred Waters more? It's not that I didn't like it but I didn't feel entranced by the performance either. There was something about the performance that fell flat for me. The songs aren't super dynamic and it felt very performance-y. It seemed like the members of Hundred Waters earned their chops playing more recitals than gigs. That's not coming from any sort of place of knowledge, that's just a snap judgement based on a style of performance. I felt the same way a thousand years ago when I saw Antony & the Johnsons. Antony is an incredible talent but he sings so effortlessly it didn't feel like it came from his guts.

I suppose if I'm being honest, the other reason I wasn't blown-away by Hundred Waters is because I've seen Braids twice and they do a similar thing in a way that makes you question your own existence. Also, if I were to review the bad review I've just written I would say it's not good. Lacks balls. Carry on.

Review: Jeff Tweedy for ACL TV

Jeff Tweedy returned to the Austin City Limits Television stage Friday night and I was lucky enough to be in attendance. Jeff Tweedy has graced the ACL TV stage several times in the past with his band Wilco but Friday evening’s taping was a showcase for brand-new songs from an upcoming solo record.

Tweedy explained that he started recording the new album playing all of the instruments himself because he thought that’s what you were supposed to do for a solo album. After awhile his son Spencer started playing drums and eventually his solo sound was fleshed-out with a full band of friends and houseguests. Friday evening’s set was essentially two sets in one. The first hour was Tweedy with a full backing band playing all-new songs from the upcoming LP. The second hour of performance was mostly solo, with a bit of help from the ladies of Lucius on backing vocals. Incidentally, the ladies of Lucius lent their vocals to both the full band and solo sets. The evening closed with a full band song followed by a solo number. In other words, it was everything you would want from a, sans Wilco, Jeff Tweedy set.

I know it can be tricky when you go to a concert and the artist plays an hour of brand-new material but in the context of an incredibly reverent ACL TV audience it was perfect. The new material didn’t sound like Wilco material but it definitely sounded like Jeff Tweedy material. The lyrics were clever and poignant the melodies sounded instantly classic and the rhythms were playful. I think there was even a song in 5/4 time! How do you like that for rhythmically playful?

The majority of the set I witnessed Friday night will never be aired on your local PBS but the parts that do make it are going to be magical. Solo, with Wilco, with Uncle Tupelo or even on an episode of Parks & Recreation, Jeff Tweedy is a national treasure. You, me, and everyone we know should see him perform every chance we get.

Sturgill Simpson - The Promise

I discovered Sturgill Simpson earlier this year while I was putting together my SXSW 2014 Spotify playlist. Generally, I would have heard the classic country sound of his music and dismissed it as not for me but his song titles were so good it made me listen more closely. Simpson may sound like an old-school country dude and he is but he's an old-school country dude through a contemporary filter. He's cynical, he's familiar with psychotropics and his voice is like honey. If this dude's not on your radar, he probably should be.

Who wears a trashbag on their head to the beach? That just seems unsavory. Is that a hospital gown or something I can buy at American Apparel? They wear bags on their heads AND they smoke?! So what's with that Yankees fan at the end? Is that their Dad or could he tell they were Red Sox fans just inherently? Regardless, I feel like the message of this video is...hang on, I know this one. Last night I was in the audience for Ed Sheeran's taping of Austin City Limits television. Before the set started I posted a photo of the program to Instagram and someone left the comment, "I can't help but like him." That's when I realized, he's a very like-able young man. Ed Sheeran is not only like-able, he's downright charming.

Before his set started I was surprised to see the stage was almost completely bare. No drummer, no keyboards, the only thing on the stage at the start was a loop station on the floor and two mic stands. Since Sheeran's latest single, Sing, is very beat heavy I was expecting a full band. Turns out he is a full band.

Sheeran started his set with You Need Me, I Don't Need You / My Eyes Are Red, a ten minute medley that serves as a sort of preview for the rest of the set. He banged on the body of his guitar to make a bass beat and continued to add layers to the song creating a backdrop for him to rap over. Don't get it twisted, this wasn't a rap song but it was close enough to make my Mom turn to me to say that it wasn't the sort of music she normally listened to. I didn't catch all the lyrics but My Eyes Are Red is definitely about how he smokes pot and it's no big deal. I don't disagree with this message but it was a bit strange to me considering the audience. Although, in fairness I doubt any of the parents in the crowd caught much of anything Sheeran was singing on this particular number.

One of the many charms of last night's performance was the between song banter. Ed Sheeran, donning a black Austin City Limits T-Shirt acted both as performer and host for the evening. He asked the crowd who was seeing him for the first time, which was the majority of the audience. At that point he proceeded to explain and then demonstrate the loop station at his feet. I grew up in the same region of Maine as Howie Day so I'm already quite familiar but I thought it was wise to show the crowd that he wasn't using a backing track.

As you can see from the photo at the top of this post I had a great vantage point of the front row of the audience last night, which truly elevated the experience. Unlike most tapings I've attended of ACL TV last night's audience was filled with young girls who were absolutely giddy to be in the same room with Ed Sheeran. Watching the looks of pure, unadulterated love on these girl's faces reminded me of when I was less dead inside. These girls sang every lyric to every song and even clutched their hearts during the most meaningful parts. There was a lot of call and response singing throughout the set and these girls were the most willing participants. There was even a boy who must have been about nine years old in the front row. During a song break Sheeran looked toward the boy and said he heard it was the kid's first concert and he asked if he was enjoying it. At another point in the show Sheeran dedicated a song to a girl in the front row. I'm telling y'all he was charming.

Musically the performance straddles that line between Jason Mraz and Blackstreet. The first time I heard Ed Sheeran several years ago I thought to myself, "Oh, he's a ginger Jack Johnson from England." I wasn't too far off-base but since then he has certainly moved closer to 90's pop-R&B. Last night he sang a Nina Simone cover as well as a traditional Irish folk song and he performed both songs using R&B-style vocal runs throughout. His newest record is sure to open him up to a new audience. Like most artists who are slapped with the label Singer-Songwriter he is doing everything he can to break the perception that he's just a coffee shop dude with an acoustic guitar. His performance for ACL TV won't air until October, at which point I suspect his profile will be even higher than it is today. Ed Sheeran may not be my favorite artist in the world but last night he certainly demonstrated to me and roomful of excitable young ladies that he is a star.

Flesh Lights 7" Release Show

Hey remember me? I used to write a music blog, now I just send out the occasional tweet. What's new with you? JK, don't care. On the real though, I got a sweet new job downtown and I've been so obsessed with making salads to pack in my executive bag that I've abandon you. I still love you dear reader and I want you to know that there is a can't miss show happening at Beerland tomorrow evening. Put on your tight jeans, grab some cash for the door and perhaps some ear protection because it's gonna get noisy and you might get beer "spilled" on you. A new 7" from Austin's-own Flesh Lights is the main cause for celebration but each band on tomorrow night's line-up is worth your time and attention.

I'm new to team, The Dead Space but from now on I'm one of their most vocal supporters. Before their latest single appeared in my Soundcloud stream a week or two ago I had no frame of reference for this band, who has actually been playing Austin for several years. By the time the breakdown hit at about the 3 minute mark of Behind the Wall I was ready to build a shrine to this band. Tomorrow night will be my first time seeing them in a live setting and I suspect it's going to be even better then sitting at my computer listening to them via earbuds. The jury's still out on that one though.

Rounding out tomorrow night's bill at Beerland you'll find Ditch Witch and Xetas. I have not seen Ditch Witch play but I caught Xetas opening for Protomartyr a few weeks ago and they are pure energy. If you're used to indie-rock shows with self-conscious nerds who spend most of their set doing the 1000-yard stare, then you have to be at this show. This line-up is raucous, loud and everything else you want in a real rock 'n roll show.

As a member of the LGBTQQIAAP community, I don't judge or define people based on their age, race, sex, ethnicity or gender identities. With that being said, it's hard to ignore the high percentage of killer rock musicians who happen to have vaginas playing at Red 7 tonight. Arrive early to catch Austin's-own Feral Future. The first time I saw Feral Future I was completely blown away and they are the perfect tone-setters for this lineup. With hooks for days, riffs you wanna learn and vocals we can all sing along to, you'd be a real shitbag if you talked through their whole fucking set. Hypothetically speaking, of course. I think Fat Chance is a good starter song if you want to check out Swearin' below but I'm a sucker for songs that lean ballady/R&Bish.

As a native New-Englander and a person who appreciates a good band moniker, I am predisposed to love Potty Mouth. The band describes their sound as being inspired by 70's punk and 90's college rock. Who am I to disagree? Their debut LP, embedded below, was released last fall. Don't be embarrassed if you don't own it already or it didn't make your favorite albums of 2013 list just be happy you found it and maybe spend legal currency to prove your devotion? You could at least buy a fucking pillowcase! How can you resist that pillowcase? You can't. You bought it already.

HELL BENT by Potty Mouth

Speaking of bands with good monikers, Perfect Pussy will play the final set of the evening at Red 7 tonight. I have seen them three times this year and each time I noticed something different about the performance that I was captivated by. The first time I wrote about Perfect Pussy I talked about the live experience as a piece of performance art from the line check to the teardown. I won't take you through all of that again, I just wanted to prove that I'm smart and pretentious because clearly you needed to be reminded of those facts. Incidentally Perfect Pussy's debut LP is getting more buzz than ~~redacted vibrator joke~~ and if you haven't listened to it, you should. If you have listened to it and you love it, then you should probably own it?

Protomartyr Tonight

What da shit you guys?! Tonight's Protomartyr show at Holy Mountain isn't sold-out yet?! Before you go any further get yourself a $10 ticket because the doors open in less than three hours and by all rights this show should have sold-out last week.

It just goes to show what a strange bubble SXSW can be. Last week I saw Eagulls who were tremendously buzzy before and during the festival but there was hardly anyone at their headlining show last week? Protomartyr came out of the festival critical darlings and several people whose taste I trust told me they were great at the festival but somehow this show isn't sold-out? What's going on Austin? Has the bro-culture surpassed the blog-culture? I know downtown is mostly brofessionals and trustafarians now but we working-class indie kids need to do our part too.

Part of me is afraid that bands like Protomartyr will woo Austin bands away to Detroit. As our city gets more crowded and expensive, urban wastelands like Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh become more and more appealing to artists. After doing a quick Craigslist survey, it looks like you could live three months in Detroit for the cost of one month in Austin. Le sigh.

Regardless of trends in urban development and the possibility that we could lose our favorite bands to cheaper cities we need to focus on right now and right now we are preparing for tonight's show at Holy Mountain. We've already discussed the fact that Protomartyr is the headlining act and that they're from Detroit. Playing the support slots tonight will be Xetas and Simple Circuit. Both of those bands live here so don't let the Proto guys convince them to move ok?

It's the last Thursday in May! You know what that means?! It means there's a bunch of cool shit going on tonight! Should I finish every sentence in this post like this?! Can we feign this level of excitement?!?! The answer is, no. We can't do that and we won't do that.

Chaos in Tejas isn't back per se but they are presenting 7 shows over the course of 5 days and two of those shows will take place this evening over at Red 7. Floor reunited last year and decided to make a new record, which came out last month. Tonight you can hear them play songs from their first new album in over a decade simply by purchasing a $15 ticket and checking out their set on the inside stage.

Maybe you're not really into "Doom Rock"? That's cool, you might want to stick with Red 7 but just head to the alley out back because Parquet Courts are headlining the outside stage tonight. The inside and outside shows tonight do require separate ticket purchases and they will be using both the front and back doors, so to speak. Parquet Courts' new album is available in a limited-edition available exclusively to 7 record shops around the country including our-own End of an Ear.

Perhaps you have some sort of issue with Red 7? You don't like places that don't sell Budweiser or something? Don't sweat it because right across the street at Empire Control Room you can catch Heavenly Beat. Tickets for this show are $12 and don't expect Heavenly Beat to start until late in the evening, the event info specifies that the show will end at 2am.

English-band, Eagulls return to Austin this weekend and they've got Twin Peaks in tow. If you did your homework before SXSW this year, then chances are you're already familiar with Eagulls. For those of you seeing their name for the first time right now, they are a post-punk band from Leeds that glowers at the audience while playing kick-ass tunes. Advance tickets will only set you back $10 but you have two opportunities to see them for free as well.

First of all, you can catch Eagulls performing in my favorite record shop, End of an Ear, at 4pm on Saturday. It's an intimate space and a great opportunity to catch a band outside their natural environment. Not mention, it's a record shop and hello that's awesome.

Your other chance to see Eagulls for free in Austin this weekend involves participating in a very simple contest. I have run contests on this site before and people barely even participate so if you e-mail contest@austinbloggylimits.com with Eagulls in the Subject line and your name and age in the body of the e-mail your chances of winning will be really good. By the way, in addition to being a great TV show, Chicago-based Twin Peaks is a good band and it would be lame if you missed their set. They have a new record coming out in August and I bet they are playing a lot of new songs on this tour. #conjecture

The Weekend Starts Tonight!

The weekend starts tonight if you're awesome and you are so let's go out! We Are Scientists return to Austin this evening and they're playing one of my favorite rooms, Red 7 inside. Tickets are still available at the moment but I expect it will sell-out at the door or sooner. Doors for tonight's show are at 9pm and Paws is opening so be sure to arrive early.

Arrive early (10ish) to catch sets from Basketball Shorts and Barf Bag.

Perhaps you want to keep things local but you'd prefer something a little more hip-hip/soul/R&B flavored? Well, you're in luck because Riders Against the Storm (RAS) perform at Sahara Lounge this evening. Austin's music scene is more than just a bunch of ugly dudes with guitars throwing microphones...allegedly.

Now that Austin Psych Fest is firmly in our rearview mirrors we can look back reflectively. Let's take a journey of the mind to a few days ago. This was the second year APF took place out at Carson Creek Ranch. You may remember last year I was a bit hesitant because I had never been out there and I thought it might be a logistical nightmare. I'm sure for some it can still be troublesome to travel to and from Carson Creek Ranch but since I'm not much of a drinker, I live in South Austin and I have a car and it was no big deal. The story I heard the most this weekend had to do with the dust. However, most of the people I heard complaining about the dust were the people wearing the "guest" wristbands. That just says to me, thanks for the free show but can you do something about the weather?

Yes, it was dusty and if I had expensive camera equipment I would probably have been much more annoyed by it. Obviously I don't like breathing in a bunch of dust either, which is why I wore a bandana over my face. I also had one on my neck to combat the sun but that's enough about me and how ridiculously prepared I was. The music at Austin Psych Fest redefines the idea of psychedelic music. I saw a dude wearing a T-Shirt from a typical psych music fest and it listed artists like moe, Phil Lesh and String Cheese Incident. I don't want to disparage those bands or festivals that would book artists like that but fuck that shit in the ear. Austin Psych Fest books a range of great psychedelic artists from around the world without resorting to that noodly guitar bullshit. APF bands are all about that dark, sludgy groove and lots of the bands I saw this weekend made me believers in that dark groove.

Let's get down to it shall we? I'm going to wrap things up similarly to how I previewed things with three highlights from each day. Firstly I should mention that I didn't attend every moment of the festival so surely there are acts that won't make my highlights list simply because I was not there. For instance, I know that Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks was a highlight for those in attendance but I didn't catch that set, so it's not going to be on my list.

Friday Highlights

The Fresh& Onlys are the sort of band that didn't fit squarely on this festival's bill but they certainly have psychedelic elements to their sound. They played the Amphitheatre stage, which I truly enjoyed but I think it made the band feel uncomfortable. That particular stage was set-up to be a sit and listen stage and for a band that is used to playing tight clubs filled with rowdy patrons I think it was a bit disconcerting. Not only were people not rowdy, they weren't even standing up, which would have been less noticeable if the performance didn't take place in broad daylight. Regardless of the circumstances the band sounded fantastic. The powered through songs both old and new and inspired me to go home and listen to their records more.
Peaking Lights, literally, put Mr. S. to sleep which says as much about Mr. S. as it does Peaking Lights. They weren't the most dynamic performers and I didn't love every moment of their set BUT the moments that I connected with were truly powerful. I can't explain what the heck they were doing to produce the sounds and the vocal was outrageously inconsequential but the sounds they were using and the way the song forms emerged out of them was pretty great.
Psychedelic godfathers, The Zombies had no business sounding as good as they did. The vocals were clear and powerful, the instrumentation was tight and they played everything you would want to hear at a Zombies show. They also did something, which makes a lot of artists uncomfortable, which is to talk about themselves. Lots of young, new artists won't even say the name of their band while their performing. The Zombies seemed like they were on an educational tour about themselves and I thought that was really smart. They told us who covered their songs and gave the crowd context for what they were about to hear. It was both fun and educational.

Saturday Highlights

Mark McGuire blew me away. I was not familiar with his previous band Emeralds and I have only listened to his records a couple of times. I enjoyed the recordings but I didn't expect him to be a one-man-band when he performed. Using a series of pedals and loop effects McGuire constructed beautifully lyrical instrumental arrangements before our very eyes. Between songs he was humble and appreciative of the experience. He said some New-Age-y things that would normally be a turn-off for me but given the context and the sincerity I actually appreciated it.
I'm still not convinced I'm pronouncing Boogarins correctly, which is especially problematic because I want to talk to everyone about how great their set was. This Brazilian band brought the stoner rock but it was so much better than that label is.

Pure X is one of those Austin bands that seems to get way more respect in Europe than they get in their own hometown. I've been a fan of their records for years but their latest is definitely their greatest according to me. They have taken those dark, brooding, shoegazy elements that have always been present and put them in a more accessible pop radio context. Don't get it twisted though, Pure X aren't a pop band by a long shot. I'm just trying to say that their songwriting has reached new heights and if you weren't paying attention before you should certainly be paying attention now. Their set at APF was so fantastic that whenever I saw the band members for the rest of the weekend I felt nervous because they were so good it made me uncomfortable.

Sunday Highlights

UK band Toy was another band whose set was so incredibly powerful that I was aghast. I loved Toy's first record and their last record just took things to the next level. This is a band that performs like they are on a mission to destroy. Obviously by the time I saw Toy I had seen similar bands all weekend but they were definitely the most driving of all of them. This is psychedelia meets trucker speed and it was fantastic.
Cosmonauts were nothing like I expected them to be. For some reason I had in my head that they were much more chunky garage rock types but boy was I wrong. Cosmonauts had that shoegaze guitar sound mixed with a heavier rock sound. I haven't listened to their records much but I would definitely recommend seeing them in concert to anyone who has the opportunity. I hope the next time they come through Austin they play Red 7 inside because I would love to see a full set in a club from Cosmonauts.
If you glanced through by APF preview post then you already know that War on Drugs is a band I was truly looking forward to this weekend and they delivered for me in a big way. If Kurt Vile and War on Drugs are involved in some sort of creative rivalry we are all benefiting. The latest LP from War on Drugs is the most immediately classic LP of 2014. It is powerful, emotional music that evokes some of the most iconic rock 'n roll acts of the past and present. There are elements of Springsteen, U2, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty but it's all re-imagined in this truly contemporary way. This is music for driving down the highway toward a brand-new life and much like Cosmonauts I want to see this band again in a club and I want to shout along to every word of every song with my eyes closed and my face toward the sky.

So, there you have it. Nine sets that I enjoyed immensely. Obviously there was a lot more to the festival than these nine sets but that's the parameters I set up for myself and that's what I'm sticking to. Thanks for reading.

Planning for Austin Psych Fest

Austin Psych Fest officially starts on Friday but you can ease into your psychedelic groove tomorrow night at both the Mohawk and Red 7. If you already purchased APF Weekend Passes then these events are gratis until they're full. If you didn't get weekend passes, there are still a few tickets left to the Mohawk but Red 7 is already sold-out. You can buy tickets or pick-up your wristbands starting at 5:30pm on Thursday over at Empire Automotive.

Since these shows are open to Austin Psych Fest Weekend Pass holders, you'll want to arrive early as the clubs will hit capacity well before the headliners go on. I also expect it won't be easy to jump from one venue to the other so you'll really want to study those line-ups. If you're trying to get the most bang for your buck, you should start at the Mohawk because they open their doors at 6:30. The first set at Red 7 won't be until 9.

I can already tell you there are going to be a couple of scheduling conflicts when you'll want to see two (or more) bands performing at the same time but last year it was really easy to move between stages and they timed the sets out in a way that was conducive to catching the majority of both sets. Below you'll find a list of artists I like. There are other artist playing who are not listed below, I may or may not like them but they didn't make this list. If you're really into them, that's cool. Maybe they're not listed because I haven't heard them, maybe they're not listed because I don't like them, maybe they're not listed because I got too psychedlic before I wrote this and forgot. Remembering Kelly

Last night I planned to attend the Cloud Nothings show with The Men at the Mohawk so I did what any self-respecting blogger would do, I went to bed around 6pm, woke up around 8pm with the intent of heading downtown around 9pm. However, my plans changed very quickly after awaking from my disco nap. I had a Facebook message from my friend Merideth. She had attached a screenshot of a tweet from Glitoris saying that our dear friend Kelly was the pedestrian hit by the car Friday night. I looked at the message again in disbelief then I logged on to Twitter so I could see the update for myself but it still didn't fully sink in.

I had read the story of the drunk driver killing the pedestrian when I first woke up Saturday morning. My friend Chris had posted about it on Facebook because he was stuck in traffic when the SECOND drunk driver almost drove through the crime scene. I was aghast at the story but I never dreamed I would have a personal connection to the incident other than knowing a witness. That's why when I found out that the pedestrian was my friend Kelly, it was even more shocking.

My first interactions with Kelly were through Twitter. I hadn't been on Twitter very long, I don't think I even had 100 followers yet. I was searching my own username to see if anyone was talking about me when I stumbled upon the ATX Hipsters account. It was basically an RSS feed aggregating and sharing content from Austin Music Blogs. At first I was insulted at the insinuation that I was a hipster but I got over that pretty quickly. I messaged the elusive ATX Hipsters to thank them and ask if they could alter the script to it included our Twitter @ mentions when the stories were posted. I received an enthusiastic response saying what a great idea that was and the idea was implemented almost immediately.

In the months that followed I became more connected with ATX Hipsters online as well as the other content creators in his feed. I don't remember if Kelly and I met at a tweet-up or at a show but I know that Tuezgayz is really what started it all. There were about a dozen of us Austin scenester-types who were at Tuezgayz religiously for the first 6-10 weeks. It's hard to believe now but there was a time when it was like our little secret and it felt like we all knew each other and we all became friends. It was on those nights that I really got to know Kelly and he moved from a figure in my online life to a friend in my actual reality.

Over the years we grew closer. Since Kelly lived downtown I would text him whenever I was going to a show or whenever I knew I would be downtown. Before during and after SXSW he was my number one person to contact if I wanted to talk shit, or if I wanted to know about secret events. We used to love to spread rumors about secret Wilson Philips performances, we would text each other about lines and send each other tips about where to avoid. We walked the city together, we stood in lines together, we watched buzz bands together and we talked shit together.

Kelly loved his anonymity. He loved the idea that no one knew who or what "@atxhipsters" really was. In the wake of his tragic death I have seen tweets reaching out to the atxhipsters "team" or posts referring to Kelly as a she and it makes me chuckle. I feel like Kelly would love that to some he is still an enigma. He was a genius with coding and the scripts he wrote to create the atxhipsters twitter feed will live on and it will hurt my heart every time I write a post and receive a Twitter notification from atxhipsters.

What many of you may not have realized when you read about Kelly's tragic death is that he was killed about three blocks from his front door. Kelly lived at 11th and I-35, he was killed at 8th and I-35. Kelly hated drunk driving, he was known to let people who were too drunk in his bed while he slept on the couch. He and I had extensive conversations about the need for better public transportation in this city. The last time I spoke with him was two weeks ago and we brought it up then.

Austin is a city of alcohol tourism. We have at least three neighborhoods dedicated to the consumption of alcohol. People travel to our city from all over the world to get drunk. We need to stop burying our heads in the sand. The 6th st entertainment district over-serves their clients on a regular basis. No one should be carried out of a bar because they are too drunk to walk and that behavior is just normal for dirty 6th. The Austin bus system isn't horrible but it's not enough. This city desperately needs a more comprehensive public transportation network. That network should include trains, buses and contiguous sidewalks. Our city likes to boast of the miles of hike and bike trails but I would be pleased with a safe, contiguous sidewalk from my apartment to the grocery store. The Austin City Council is having one big circle jerk over the success of the B-Cycles while completely ignoring how many car vs bicycle accidents we have every year.

Kelly was hit by a drunk driver while trying to walk home. After the first asshole killed my friend, another drunk asshole almost killed the cops at the crime scene of Kelly's death. After THAT asshole was arrested ANOTHER ASSHOLE ALMOST DROVE INTO THE CRIME SCENE!! WHAT IN THE FUCKING HELL AUSTIN?!?! My friend's death caught THREE drunk drivers at the same fucking intersection. You know the best part? You can see the fucking Austin Police Headquarters from where Kelly died.

I don't know what's going to happen in the wake of Kelly's death but I know that I'll never get to spend time with my friend again and that makes me really mad. I want to forgive whoever killed Kelly but also hope that person his haunted with the image of what they have done for the rest of their lives. I hope when they close their eyes the image of hitting my friend with their car is seared into the backs of their eyelids.

I don't really know where we go from here and I'm sure this isn't the best memorial I could have written for Kelly but I had to say something. I had to let you all know that I love Kelly. I'm glad he was my friend and I'm really, really pissed off that he's dead now. I'm even more pissed off that someone who was dear to my heart is now one of the several pedestrians killed by drunk drivers in Austin this year. Cars hitting pedestrians shouldn't be a normal thing. When I tell someone my friend was hit by a drunk driver while walking home, I shouldn't have to specify which car vs pedestrian incident I'm referring to.

Right now I want solutions. I don't want band-aid fixes, I don't want to hear all the reasons we can't beef up our infrastructure. I want people getting shit done. Don't ask me how are we going to pay for this infrastructure because so far we're paying for our lack of infrastructure in human blood. How many more of my friends have to die before we get our shit together?

Review: Future Islands at Mohawk

Last night I was in attendance for the sold-out Future Islands show at the Mohawk. Future Islands are the returning champs of SXSW 2014 and last night's performance was their victory lap. Before the band took the stage I looked around and I saw so many members of so many Austin bands in the crowd. I also saw most of my fellow music bloggers and presumably some print media types too. In other words, it was the hipster show of night. Maybe even the hipster show of the week?

I'm not going to pretend I've been a big Future Islands fan since before they started getting buzz, because that would be a lie. I have been aware of the band for years, I have heard their records but last night was my first time seeing them perform live. Genre-wise, the band is kind of hard to nail down. They sort of sound like an 80's new wave band but there's more to it than that.

It's no secret, Future Islands' lead singer Sam is the star of the show. He stalks the stage, unleashing bursts of movement, gyrating, gesturing, beating his chest and generally acting as if he is on the verge of coming unhinged. Sam was incredibly connected with the audience, making eye contact, pointing, shaking hands and being generally convivial. The core of Future Islands is their incredibly tight rhythm section, with melody provided by a keyboardist/computer-dude and the vocals. I'm still not sure how I feel about Sam's pro-wrestler/cookie monster voice that comes growling out on occasion but the crowd seemed to be into it and if it ain't broke don't fix it. By the end of the night Sam had sweat through his white T-Shirt and every one of his overly dramatic gestures caused great cascades of perspiration to fly through the air.

I had low expectations for the crowd because I knew that this was a show that a lot of people would want to say they were at. I strategically chose to watch from the floor level because the further you get from the stage the more casually attentive the audience becomes. I was hoping that remaining on the crowded ground level would mean people were more dedicated to paying attention to the performance and that was largely true. I also feel like the Mohawk's outside stage always sounds best on the ground level. It sounds good on the decks as well but if you're willing to sacrifice personal space the ground level is where it's at. It was also great to watch the people who were in the viewing area on the side of the stage singing along to every song and mimicking Sam's grand gestures. One of my favorite things in life is that feeling you get when you sing along at a show with your face toward the sky and your eyes closed tightly. There was a hell of a lot of that going on last night.

If you missed last night's show, I wouldn't fret too much. 2014 is a big year for Future Islands and I expect they'll be back through town again before it's over. I'm definitely going to include them in my Guess the Fest spreadsheet for FunFunFunFest. We'll know May 20th if I'm right or not.

ACL Festival 2014: Line-Up Reveal

It's been over 24hrs since the Austin City Limits Festival line-up was revealed, which means tickets are on sale now. It also means we've all had some time to reflect on the line-up and form thoughtful opinions. Just kidding, we all formed snap judgements within moments of the announcement and now we are sticking to our guns on that. In a nutshell, I feel like this year's line-up is as exciting or more exciting than in previous years. Clearly, I'm a big hater in a general sense so I'm not really the target market for ACL Festival. If you want to sell-out a big-ass music festival you can't book a bunch of "cool" bands that assholes like me enjoy, at least not exclusively. You have to book bands that people who listen to the radio will be excited about. You have to book a band for the kids and a band for the people who brought those kids. You have to make Bob Schneider fans happy AND AVICII fans happy at the same time. So with that all in mind I'm going back to my original point which is, this year's line-up is good.

For my purposes, I feel like a discussion of the headliners is mostly irrelevant. I'm "excited" to see Outkast but after the Coachella reviews I'm setting my expectations pretty low. I'm excited to see Beck and I'm hoping he headlines either Friday or Saturday so the CapMetro Bus System doesn't fuck me with their shitty Sunday night bus schedule. Now's the part where I just list bands I like who will be at ACL Fest this year:

I promised myself I wasn't going to do one of those things where I single out one of the acts and question their worthiness but can I just point out that Lana Del Rey is the 7th name on the list. We live in a world in which LDR gets higher billing than The Replacements. Just putting that out there. Also, I'm really hoping Belle & Sebastian has an aftershow.

Review: Damien Jurado at Red 7

I want to start this post by acknowledging that I know very little about Damien Jurado. One of my good friends from High School has been trying to get me to listen to Damien Jurado for a decade or more and thanks to Jurado's most recent LP, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son, I finally started paying attention. With that being said, I really can't report much about which songs were or were not played because I'm not that familiar with his catalogue. What I can tell you is that I almost didn't attend last night's show and that would have been a travesty. I arrived at Red 7 shortly after 10:30. I was expecting the first of three artists would be on stage when I entered but it turns out the second of three was already midway through his set. I was kind of bummed that I only got to hear two and half songs from Ola Podrida's David Wingo but what I did hear was beautiful and atmospheric.

Jurado took the stage shortly before 11pm and he started his line check. There was a distinctive hum/buzz in the line and the sound guy asked Jurado about it. Jurado said it's been doing that for the past few days but he didn't seem too concerned. The buzz was very audible and I could tell the sound guy was annoyed that he couldn't get rid of it but he was resigned to just try to lower it in the mix and accept that it would be there throughout the performance. When Jurado first started performing all I really heard was that buzz but by the time he hit the chorus of the first song not only was the buzz not a distraction it complimented the atmosphere of the songs with a distant AM radio vibe.

For the first twenty minutes of the set I had total tunnel vision. I was so focused on the lyrics and the performance that when someone standing next to me accidentally brushed my arm I was completely startled because I had forgotten there were other people in the room. The audience was so completely quiet all you could hear was the songs and the distant hum of cars on 7th street. Not only was the audience almost completely silent, they kept their phones in their pockets and they simply listened. Needless to say, it was an eerie experience considering the utter disregard most Austin audiences have for a performance. There was a moment where it felt like we were all getting Langoliered and the show was going to end with the sound of Jurado cooing as the audience was blissfully eaten-up by those time creature things. Maybe that was just me though?

Jurado was by himself on stage armed with an acoustic guitar, some chorus and reverb affects and his voice. The performance felt naked, vulnerable and honest. He emoted in a way that didn't feel like a contrived performance as much as a genuine expression. This is a man who has lived the majority of his adult life on a stage A performer who has learned how to command a stage without resorting to any sort of tricks or gimmicks. The set was an hour long, with Jurado returning for a three song encore. The library-like quiet wasn't maintained throughout the entire performance but it was pretty damned close.

This is a crazy week for sold-out shows in Austin and last night's performance at Red 7 was the antithesis of most of those other shows. For me an ideal live music experience involves both the performers and audience giving in to the moment for as close to the duration of the performance as humanly possible. If you're in the audience, that means yielding attention from yourself for the duration of a band's set. It means talking time is later, right now let's all be together and listen. It means, taking some photos is cool but try to spend most of the time enjoying your actual reality. The folks who turned up for Damien Jurado last night get it, the people shouting along the lyrics in Orville's face at an OBN IIIs show get it too. It's not about being quiet as a mouse, it's about respecting the performance and getting what you paid for by enjoying the moment. Most importantly it's about trying not to annoy me. Can we all just work together toward trying to annoy me less? Thanks guys, I really appreciate it.
