Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. (born March 13, 1970), better known by his stage name Common (previously Common Sense), is an American rapper and actor.

Common debuted in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow a Dollar? and maintained a significant underground following into the late 90s, after which he gained notable mainstream success through his work with the Soulquarians. His first major label album, Like Water for Chocolate, received widespread critical acclaim and moderate commercial success. Its popularity was matched by 2005's Be, which was nominated in the 2006 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. Olubowale Folarin (born September 21, 1984), better known by his stage name Wale (pronounced /wɑːleɪ/), is an American hip hop artist from Washington, D.C. He rose to prominence in 2006, when his song "Dig Dug (Shake It)" became popular in his hometown. Wale became locally recognized and continued recording music for the regional audience. Producer Mark Ronson discovered Wale in 2007 and signed Wale to his Allido Records in 2007. While signed to that label, Wale released several mixtapes and appeared in national media including MTV News and various urban magazines. In 2008, Wale signed to Interscope Records, and his debut album Attention Deficit was released in 2009 with the singles "Chillin", "World Tour", and "Pretty Girls".

Wale was born in Washington, D.C.[1] His parents are of the Yoruba ethnic group of southwestern Nigeria and came to the United States from Austria in 1979. He has two older brothers, one of whom, Alvin, lives in New York City working for a record label. Wale's family first lived in the Northwest section of Washington.[2] His father worked as a cab driver in the D.C. area.[3] He graduated from Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg in 2001 and moved to Largo, Maryland in 2003.[4] Wale attended Robert Morris College and Virginia State University on football scholarships, then transferred to Bowie State University but dropped out.[1][2] Wale's boyhood love of the game of football and the Washington Redskins has led to a longstanding rumor that Wale has a tattoo of tight end Chris Cooley.[5]

Lawrence Parker (born August 20, 1965), better known by his stage name KRS-One, is an American MC and producer. Over his career, he has been known by several pseudonyms including "Kris Parker," "The Blastmaster," "The Teacha," and "The Philosopher."[2] At the 2008 BET Awards, KRS-One was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for all his work and effort towards the Stop the Violence Movement as well as the overall pioneering of hip-hop music and culture.

Parker was born in Brooklyn[1] but grew up in Soundview and Mott Haven (Millbrook Housing projects being directly referred to in his lyrics) neighborhoods of the South Bronx section of New York City. In his teenage years, he frequently accompanied the Hare Krishnas and was subsequently nicknamed "Krisna", hence "Kris". "KRS-One" was originally Parker's graffiti tag, short for "Kris Number One". He began using it as his stage name and later devised a backronym for the name: "Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone" or "Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody".
KRS-One has been a vegetarian since his youth[3].

Myka 9 (born Michael Troy) is a rapper from Los Angeles.

Originally known as Microphone Mike, in the 80s he was a member of the MC Aces with Aceyalone and Spoon Iodine. As one of the founding members of Freestyle Fellowship, Myka 9 was instrumental in the scene at the Good Life Cafe in the early 90s. (Timetable contains some of his live recordings from the Good Life Cafe open-mic.) As one of the most stylistically advanced rappers at the Good Life, Myka 9 has had a profound influence on L.A. underground hip hop and freestyle rapping in general. Discussing the influence of Myka 9's song "7th Seal," released in 1991 on Freestyle Fellowship's To Whom It May Concern, Ellay Khule said, " '7th Seal' blew everybody's mind for at least 2 years straight. People studied that shit backwards and forwards -- even we don't know all those words. That made everybody say like 'I gotta get a tape out' or 'I can't rap like so-and-so no more. I can't be in 80s, now we movin' to the 90s.' That totally transferred our musical thought." Drummer and producer JMD said, "Mike was like the Charlie Parker of all these motherfuckers."

He is known for rapid-fire, jazz-influenced, melodic rapping, often incorporating singing and occasionally scatting into his songs. Myka has said of his style, “My rhymes take the direction of a jazz trumpet or sax solo, like Miles or Trane, if I was to rhyme in the same meter as those notes . . . that’s my concept.”

arrhythmia examines love, in all of its ugliness and splendor. This urban odyssey utilizes elements of hip-hop, contemporary movement, and lyrical slam-style poetry in this challenging, musical, political, breathtaking experience for all audiences.

Zell Miller III is an interdisciplinary theater/performance poet. His play, Radio Silence, premiered at The VORTEX last season and won the B. Iden Payne Award for Best Original Script. His one-man show my child, my child, my alien child, won the Award for Best Original Script from the Austin Critics’ Table in 2007. Zell is also the creator and co-producer of the Hip-Hop Theater Explosion which features poets, MC’s, DJ’s, dancers, and musicians in a theatrical variety show. He also hosts “Speaking the Spoken: The Art of Verse” a monthly open mic series at The VORTEX. He has been a featured poet at SxSW Fest and has opened for legendary artists such as Nikki Giovianni and The Last Poets. As one of the premiere hip-hop theater artists in the country, Zell is proud to bring this art form to his home city, Austin.
