Hi Zihan,

Your metrics would capture people whom had been on the website less then 30 mins. The 30 min rule is used as a way to define new and returning users.

This explanation from Google's analytics help section might clear it up for you...

"<em>Visits represent the number of individual sessions initiated by all the visitors to your site.</em>" this means it counts everyone that comes to your website but

"<em>If a user is inactive on your site for 30 minutes or more, any future activity will be attributed to a new session." </em>they are counted again

"<em>Users that leave your site and return within 30 minutes will be counted as part of the original session." </em>they are not counted again

This last bit is where you might have gotten that mixed information about users being on your website for less then 30 mins not being counted, they're it's just that they aren't recounted if they go and come back in under 30mins.

We use a range of tools at Austrade....one that gets a lot of use is Google Analytics. Austrade's use of this tool should not be seen as an endorsement or recommendation.

There are a lot of tools in the market place and you should take your time to pick one that matches your needs and requirements.

I was told that the number of visitors captured are only for those who spend 30 minutes accessing the website. Is this true? By the way what software does AUSTRADE use to measure its web statstics?

Thank you.

You are quite right, the organisation that tracks performance royalties in Japan is JASRAC http://www.jasrac.or.jp

They would be the right people to contact and establish how they may be able to best assist you in the Japanese market.

This is a really good article. Slideshows online can target a wider audience and having PPT files lost on a laptop is quite "old school."

Going one step further, we'd also suggest website owners consider the following:-

1. Site referrers: Most web statistics show which websites are directing traffic to your website. This would include search engines like Google and Yahoo, but also other niche sites.

2. Keywords: Most web statistics can also show which keywords were used in the search engine to find your website.

Having this data can show you what is and isn't working in terms of driving traffic to your website.

If your statistics software can't do this you can obtain Google Analytics for free.

I need to get in contact with and get an application from the organization in Japan that tracks the air waves, royalties, and air time for recordings. I think the name is JasRace. How can I contact them and get an application?

A large focus surely must be the AUD dollar. Back when the AUD dollar was in the high 90's many exporters were worried whether their businesses would survive. Now the AUD dollar is weaker and things are surviving but many economists are predicting a massive sell-off in the USD due to the monetization of treasury bonds. If this happens there will be pain (trying not to sound gloomy).
