If I understand you correctly you are creating a project within a project?

To copy settings over from an exisiting project you can select the "Copy settings from existing project" option in the new project dialgue box. See attached.

The client wants to include reducers as FROM or TO of those lines with reducers in the line list report. I have tried creating a reducer in the inline asset class and it worked. The problem is, the custom reducer wont detect the larger and smaller line sizes. I have to rotate it manually so it would follow the flow of large to small size.

Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi There

It is possible but you will need to customize the report to pull thought all that information at once. I would suggest making your own report and then editing it. The edits are dont through Microsoft access. This is where you will provide fields for the report creator to generate its report from.

How do I print out a complete Bill of material for just one line number?

I have several lines in my model, but only want the material list for just one line.

Hi David,

The easiest method I would use is, when you pull a production Iso you are able to select the line number for the Iso. If you select the Advanced option you can export the BOM of that line number as well.

I have attached an image with an example.

#1. Many of Autodesk's newer products that function as BIM are including an export method termed BIM Exchange. Inventor has it, Plant 3D can accept it for creating equipment (from Inventor), and others can use it (such as Revit). Can Plant 3D 2013 files be exported to (*.adsk) format, and if not are there plans for it in the near future?

#2. Plant Design Suite 2013 includes a seat of Revit Structural. How can I use Revit Structural files in Plant 3D, and vise versa? I want my Plant piping and equipment to be easily loadable in Revit Structural so I can build my platforms to support my piping, and see my equipment so I can design my platforms to miss pipe and and properly support equipment and steel for anchors, etc.

1. Currently you cannot export AutoCAD Plant 3D into adsk format.

2. To get the AutoCAD Plant 3D files into revit you can use the "exporttoautocad" command.

I need to be able to simulate drilling and tapping holes in SCH 80 PVC, I beleive this is a Stub In feature? Or perhaps its different with Plant 14.

Can someone tell me where I need to go (spec editor, catalog editor) or is it in the project setup? Can I just change something in the Config File?

The error I get right now is ( No Connection defined for end types TAP and PPL in the config file)

Hi There

To create a Stub in, I am going to assume you will be using 2 pipes, like I have attached. You don’t need to make the End types of the Pipes TAP, The pipes in the example are both PL pipes. When I connect the 25NB ball pipe to the 150NB pipe I use the nearest snap. The connection is made automatically as a TAPWELD (also in attached).

Hi Meir

You are able to fill in your own line number. When you select the Line Number field you can tyoe in the field, even though the drop down menu loads. If you would like the number to auto generate you can set it up in the Project Setup dialogue box, by editing the tag format for the Pipe Line Segment. See attached.

How does one go about:

1. getting a different deliminator to show up in Isos? I want to have a period in between the equiipment and the nozzle number. Right now, EQ-49002-01 is about as far as I can get where 01 is the nozzle number. I want EQ-49002.01 to show up in the ISOs

2. getting rid of the pressure class designation. We are doing bid drawings and have no time to create new nozzle classes, and the bidders will know what is needed. In the Isos right now, you will get EQ-49002-01 300, where 300 is the pressure class. I would like the 300 to be gone.

I am familiar with XML the editing of IsoConfig.xml's, so I can do it, I just don't know where to look for these variables.

Hi David,

1. To edit the equipment tag that comes out in the Iso you will need to edit this tag in the Project Setup Dialogue box. I have attached images to explain the steps, O have also displayed the out come.

2. I have not figured out how to permanently take out the Pressure Class from the Connected to field. In the meantime I would suggest removing the pressure class from the Catalog/Spec and then it will not appear in the Iso.

I have seen that the size (size 65) is filled in the Data Manager by buttweld. Would it also be possible to fill a property outside diameter (76.1)?
And also a workingtime property for fasteners?

1. The Matching Pipe OD field is the field your client is looking for. This field is filled in automatically if it is available and contains a value as you will see in the attached document.

2. You can add a Working Time field into your Data Manger for Fastners that you will be able to edit in the Data Manager. Please see attached PDF for how to add in this filed.

In Plant 3D there is a possibility to add nozzles to the Nozzle Catalog. One of them is the Pulled Bend (PE, FLG). The problem is the length of the straight pipe that is L2. With staight Nozzles there is a L when placing the Nozzle to the Equipment. With the Pulled Bend there is none. Is there any way (workaround) to change the L when placing the Nozzle or is this a fixed lenght?

Hi There

If I understand you correctly, you are looking for where to configure the end connection settings. These settings include what fasteners will be added when a certain two types of end points are brought together. You will find the end connections setting in your project setup dialogue box (see attached image).

If you would like to add your own fasteners you would add them in the Spec. You would then ensure that in the connection settings those fasteners will be used when that type of connection is made.

In answer to your question, I have not edited the isoconfig.xml to facilitate this problem. No matter if I have made an edit to a particilular IsoConfig.xml pertaining to a theme or not, I still receive the same result. Also, I always edit the ISO.dwt by way of the built in Plant 3D 2013 interface. Is there some way to have the .xml document force a ATTSYNC to the "Title Block". That would be great, but I would imagine that, since the xml is mainly working as a pointer to program tasks that this is not possible. Should I be editing the .xml as well? It seems that would be something in the documentation... Anyways, a solution would be much appreciated.

I have tried to recreate your problem on my side; unfortunately everything is coming out correctly. Is your product up to date, i.e. have you installed the latest service pack?

Are you experiencing this problem in all AutoCAD Plant 3D projects or a specific project? If you haven’t tested this yet, I would suggest creating a "test project". This will at least provide a more clear indication as to where the problem lies.

I modify the ISO.dwt to fit the companies guidlines and moved certain properties to a location that made better use of space. This should have been just fine, but when I go to creat an ISO, the already pre-mapped entities don't end up in the correct place. It seems that ATTSYNC, or BATTMAN takes care of this problem, but it seems to mess with some of the the flange annotations that tell the number of bolts (B), flanges (F), and gaskets (G). This seems to be a consistent occurence. I can side step by only using ATTSYNC only on the Title Block, but it would be nice to not have to check yet another thing to make the ISOs work like they should. What could I have done wrong in the editing of the TitleBlock to cause this to happen?

4. Bent Nozzle
Length value can not be changed.

Vent Nozzle is bent.
but it can be controlled(L value).
However, Bent Nozzle does not have the L value.
So I can not change the length of the value.

I want to adjust the length of the Bent Nozzle.

Do you know how to adjust this(Bent Nozzle)?
If this is not possible, and why?

we are using AutoCad P&ID and Plant 3D in the Plant Design Suite and are currently deciding to migrate from the local project database to a SQL Server database. Is it better to use an additional SQL Server or do you think the file based SQL Server Express is sufficient for this purpose. As I understood with the SQL Server Express only one user can write to the database and now we are not quite sure what happens if 2 persons are working on the same P&ID project and try to configure different items. Only the first one would be able to safe his changes but what happens to the other one?

Correct me if I'm wrong, when you talk about SQL Server Express, are you talking about SQLite? If that is the case then you are correct in saying only one user can write to the database. The SQLite is a file based database where only one client can write information. If there are 2 people working on the project it will be okay, if however, more than that it is recommended to move to a Microsoft SQl system. The server for this Data can be anywhere as long as clients have unrestricted access to this server continually.

The MS SQL Express is ok to use and will allow 10 users concurrently writing and reading the database. There is also a limitation here for the amount of RAM available. MS SQL Express is limited to 1GB of RAM from the physical server. There is also a limitation on Database size. The database size limits are 10GB.

Implementing an enterprise level of MS SQL would be the next option. But depending on budget, and the amount of users accessing the SQL System at once, will determine this.

Please take a look at an SQL paper presented by Jason Drew at AU 2012 http://au.autodesk.com/?nd=class&session_id=9340 you will require an Autodesk University log in to access it.

Hi Peter,

If you would like to re-join the pipes after you have created your gap using the Pipe gap tool, erase the symbols that are created when adding in your pipe gap (using your standard AutoCAD Erase command) after doing this you need to select the "Update View" option. Your pipe will then automatically be re-joined. See attached image for the steps.

This would need to be done for all flanged components? Wouldn't the model be slowed down quit a bit by using this process. AutoCAD Plant 3D does support lined piping. You can use the end type LFL for your flanges. You can model your flanges to include the lining and then use the PLANTPARTCONVERT command to add in your ports. A flange for each size will need to be modelled. Unfortunately there is no content pack to download.

Yes, this would need to be done for all sizes of a specific flange type. It shouldn’t make too much of a difference on the size as if you weren’t using your own model you would instead be using one of the default models provided with the software. This would need to be tested however in order to give an accurate result.

What I would suggest is build a custom component in your catalog, then add this to your spec and place the component into your model. Monitor the size difference and see if this is an appropriate solution for you.

Glad you looking at AutoCAD Plant 3D. With regards to the object enabler you need to install the object enabler relative to the version of AutoCAD you have. Therefore if you using AutoCAD 2012 you would need to enstall the AutoCAD Plant 3D 2012 object enabler in order for it to work.

Have you setup the layers you would like in your Ortho Graphic drawing inside the template used to generate the Ortho drawings? Or have you created your own template to use for the Ortho drawings to be generated on?

The default template used is Ortho - A1 -Color Dependent Plot Styles.dwt In order to see your layers inside the Ortho Drawing you would need to add them to the template being used when generating these drawings.

Right now, I am working my way through ISO creation in Plant 3D 2013. I am finding a lot of little glitches here and there, but I found my way around most of them as they are more user error than anything. I found one that is particularly obnoxious though.

I make sure a line is completely connected and realize that I need to change the Line Tag to match the whole line, so I just: right click>add to slelection>all connected parts, and then I change the properties of the Line Tag. The lines are still shown as connected in the 3D model, but when I generate an ISO the pipes become broken into multiple sheets and says that every pipe run has an open end. It can be fixed by physically deleting the connectors, but I do not want to have to do that every time I have to make a property change. I tried AuditProject and PlantAudit, but they did not do the trick either.

Again, the 3D model is connected, the Line Tag is the same and they have been edited via the property pallete. Essentially, I am doing a lot of Check-Work for my crew and this is a real problem, potentially. Is there something I can do, globally, to make sure that this oddity does not happen?

Have you ensured that the connectors Line tag has also been updated?

To select a connector hold down the Ctrl key and use a selection window over the area where the connection is, otherwise change the View to wireframe and select the connector holding the Ctrl key. When a connector is selected you will see yellow grips.

To point AutoCAD Plant 3D to the correct folder location, open up the spec and catalog editor as the administrator. Once opened select the "Modify Shared Content Folder..." option under tools. In the dialogue box that opens up select the correct location for the shared content. You are also able to copy over the current content from the default location (this is recommended). For additional assistance on this please see attached image.

The default content folder is C:\AutoCDAD Plant 3D 2013 Content

Based on the issues you are having I assume there is a problem with your path setups. Were there any issues upon installation? Is your local disk called "C"? The way your paths are setup would affect the tool palettes as well.

I have tried to regenerate your problem on my side. When I
change the Line number tag, the previous line number disappears from my
"Create Production Iso" dialogue box. Ensure that you have selected
all components that use this line number when changing. Otherwise please upload

Hi There

The reason for this is in the
Project setup, the "automatically assign an auto generated tag"
option has been selected for the symbol for the reducer (see attached image1),
but in the Project setup for the reducers no tag format has been setup.

In order for an automatically
generated tag to work a tag format needs to be assigned. Create a new tag format
for the error to no longer occur. Or you can change the setting for the symbol
settings to "Not a tagged component", this way no tag will be
assigned to a reducer and no error will occur.

Before converting a drawing from CTB to STB, use CONVERTCTB to convert your CTB file to a "mapping" STB file, which you then use when running CONVERTPSTYLES on a CTB drawing file

For a more permenent solution I would suggest using a CTB template to start off with.

I would suggest downloading and installing the AutoCAD Plant 3D object enabler to match the version of Revit you are currently using. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=21330574&linkID=9240618

If this does not work I would suggest using the EXPORTTOAUTOCAD command in AutoCAD Plant 3D.

Question: AutoCAD PID 2014 has new icons on the off page connectors to show if they have been connected to another off page connector. These icons appear on my prints when I batch plot my PID drawings. They do not appear when I plot the drawings individually. Any idea why? Is there any way to switch the icons off?

Autodesk is aware of this bug and it is with the developement team. If you untick the "publish in backround" option the status symbols should not be printed.

Answer: I'm not really familiar with what you are trying to do, but the grouping of components is controlled by their filter. You can locate the groups for tables under Data > AggregatedLists > AggregatedList (materials) > Groups > Group in the isoconfig.xml

Question: Hi Dave, when I create an iso from the line numbers selected, I get seperate isos as per line number (several iso .dwg files) which I have in my 3D model. My problem is; I wish to create an iso that shows all the lines (routed pipe lines) all together on one sheet that can appear just as the 3D model. Also, my plant drawing contains 4oil storage tanks, can the tanks also appear in the isometric drawing? Regards, Romaric
Answer: I don't know of a program that put multiple line numbers on one iso. Isogen can do vessel trim drawings, but not all software packages that use Isogen implement that feature. AutoCAD Isometrics is focused on generating industry standard piping isometrics.

Answer: No. While people like to have editable drawings, many forget that once exported, they're not longer suitable for use by AutoCAD P&ID. My recommendation is to publish DWFs which will display the property information, be plottable, and have good markup capability.

Hi David, I want to upsize from SQLLite to MSSQLExpress. If I install MSSQLExpress 2008 or 2008R2 on my local PC which is a member of a domain then run PnPProjectMaintenance.exe everything works as expected. If I try to upsize toa workgroup server (ie MSServer 2008r2 not in a domain) running MSSQLExpress2008 (10.0.1600 Ref http://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com.au/ for version) then when running PnPProjectMaintenance.exe from my local PC which did work to the local instance gives the error 'Your test connection to the specified server has failed. If I use 2008 SQL Management tools from my local pc and try to connect to the database on the remote workgroup 2008R2 Server running SQLExpress 2008 (v10.0.1600) then I have no problems using the sa account.

Firewall is truned off both on my PC and the workgroup server, TCP connections are enabled on the workgroup server.

I have test this with a large number of different machines and MSSQL 2008 versions/installs, all support remote SQL Maintenance Studio connections, the only exception is to a member server in my domain for both server and client, PnPProjectMaintenance.exe only seems to work when the MSSQL server is on the same machine as the Autodesk Plant 3d with the active SQLLite configuration.

Has anyone sucessfully connected to an off domain workgroup 2008 Server running MSSQL Express 2008 or 2008R2 from a domain client runnings Windows7?

I'm using Plant 3d 2013 with all current patches as at 23/3/2013 both at an OS level, SQL and Autodesk Plant3D

Answer: When you run the project maintenance app, are you selecting SQL Authentication? I believe that Windows authentication is only in the same domain, so you wouldn't be able to use that with an off-domain server. Alos, in your comment, you mentioned using the sa account to log in via Management tools, which would be SQL Authentication.

Hello Sandesh,

When you select items in the properties palette is a Line Number Tag option, this will set the tag for the line group.

You assign all of the property information in the model. In the ortho, you annotate the valves. Annotations are defined in the project setup for the class that you want to annotate.

You have to customize either the Pipe Line Group tag property to show more information, or you can customize the LineNumberScheme in the Default Theme of the isoconfig.xml. http://www.pdoteam.com/2012/05/customizing-line-display-in-plant-3d-isometrics/

I recommend copying an existing operator in the catalog if you can. The most important key is to fill in the ActuatorType property, as thats the property that display when you assign actuators to valves.

1. The DWG was removed by a "save as" out into a different area, broke into sections outside of the project, and then we used "Copy Drawing to Project" to attempt to bring it in. Should we have removed the drawing from the project first? What is the workflow for such a situation?

2. The drawing version was created in Plant 3D 2013, and it was also saved into the 2013 format. There are vendor parts that come into the project, as xrefs, that are from Inventor and are shrinkwrapped, but that cannot be the problem as we tried the exact same method-breaking the DWG into sections again-and had no problem.

Like I said before, this happens infrequently, which is good, but it would be nice to know what "not valid" even means so we can steer clear of doing the "not valid" thing. I think, overall, we have wasted a total of about 60 hours in the past month whilst trying to figure this type of issue out and/or just make a new drawing.

3. Thank you for the suggestions. I have tried a few of those, but I was never told about AUDITPROJECT that will be the first place I go if something like that ever happens again. I am assuming that focuses on the project and not just the drawing, as it would be hard to audit a drawing in the project that is not even in the project. Am I correct on that assumption? That being said, with that assumption, the reason the drawing did not go in before is because of some coding in the project? ...Yikes...

I think the problem was probably splitting up the drawing outside of the project. Being a database application, the drawings should be split up while inside the project so Plant can manage modify the database ids and relations.

So, is the drawing in the project after running AUDITPROJECT? I couldn't really tell from number 3.

I have an issue where when I'm in paperspace the layout fits the paper margins fine and also looks the same in plot preview. *Sometimes* when I go back to model space (even if I make NO changes) and back to paperspace the layout still looks fine but when I go to plot and look at plot preview, the plot area has been reduced and moved to the right side! I have yet to find any settings on the plot menu to affect this issue. I'm typically plotting extents and fit to paper.

Answer: Sorry I can't help much on this one. In my experience, troubleshooting plotting issues can be very hands on. I suppose the first thing I would try is creating page setup and then applying it to the layout and seeing if that sticks.

Hey Dave, we seem to be having a heck of a time with the Plant 3D 2013 Project structure. The main problem now is that there will be times when a drawing does not want to go into the project because it is "in use" or "not valid" (whatever that means). This drawing was originally created with Plant 3D and removed from the project so that it could be divided into more areas because it was getting cumbersome. After the drawing was divided into sections, three floor-drawings to be exact, the 1st and 3rd drawing went into the project, but the 2nd one did not and popped up a dialog box with that message where it says the drawing is either in use or not valid. Again, this drawing was in the project to begin with, as a larger drawing, but for some reason one of the sections refuse to go into the project. I guess the real question is, "what is considered 'not valid' in the eyes of the project?"

Is there some kind of AUDIT that is special to the project--like maybe a PROJECTAUDIT command of sorts? RECOVER and AUDIT do not seem to be helping either. We had no issues with this drawing in the past, and it is not the only instance of this happening, but hours of work has gone into this particular drawing; it would be a HUGE HASSLE to start over again.

I hope to hear from you soon, as AllCAD NW is a Silver Partner and authorized to even vend the software, so this would be something that would be great to fix and have knowledge about so that we can put out fires for our customers.

1. How was the drawing removed from the project?

2. What AutoCAD drawing version are you using (2007,2010, 2013)?

3. There is an AUDITPROJECT command, a PLANTAUDIT command, and a COMPRESSPROJECT command. The AUDITPROJECT command could clean up some of the issues you're seeing. The PLANTAUDIT command is more for cleaning up items that somehow lost their database connection. The COMPRESSPROJECT command is for cleaning up the database, and clearing out old or un-used tag entries.

All of these should be run before running an AUDIT or RECOVER.

Answer: Again pardon my Google-translate-ese, but it sounds like there may be an issue with the connector line numbers. Typically, they are the major reason for isos breaking up each pipe segment. Make sure you run 2013 with SP 1 and the Data Integrity hotfix. I believe the addressed some key connector issues in the Data Integrity hotfix.

With the format setup I have customized the format reads: SERVICE-NUMBER-SIZE-SPEC. I want it to read SERVICE-SIZE-SPEC-NUMBER. Now I have read numerous ECAD posts etc. etc. but I cannot solve this (I know I sound like a noob) .

Answer:

Insulation thickness and type is a line group property, so you will have to set it there. Also, you will need to place the insulation symbol on your pipe line when you want it to show in the iso.

Some line group properties (like insulation thickness) can be modified under the Process line category in the properties palette.
