Legendary DJ from Japan Izzy Utsumi releases new album “Live at Eleven Expo EP”

DJ Izzy Utsumi has released his new extended-play album, the “Live at Eleven Expo EP.” The record features 17 minutes of original digital music in three tracks. Those familiar with Utsumi’s music will not be disappointed with this latest installment to his collection, which features postmodern techno and house effects, and melodies that change from movement to movement like classical compositions. His beats vary from driving, heavy-hitting industrial sounds to natural percussion partially inspired by traditional Japanese music. This dichotomy in tone, the blend of high-tech digital sound and native naturalism, is one of Utsumi’s key characteristics.

This attribute is seen even in his stated influences. Where most artists name great musicians and bands, Utsumi (born Izuru Utsumi) right away begins naming his real inspirations. In the order he gives them, they are faithfully reprinted here: “Nature, Astronomy, Budgerigar [a singing bird], Ethnic music around the world…” But he is by no means deaf to the music of humankind. He goes on to name “Miles Davis, Moondog, Egberto Gismonti, etc.” He also urges dancers and music listeners all over the world to realize their “global ethnicity.”

Utsumi has been making music since the 1980s, and is well-known and respected in the Japanese EDM underground scene, as well as in the industry. His experience in music is as well-rounded and open-minded as his tastes. He began by singing hymns in his youth, and learned to play keyboard. His listening habits grew to encompass soul, funk, jazz, rock n’ roll; later he moved into the Central and South American flavors, Latin, Brazilian, reggae, dub, and from there into so-called world music, the indigenous music of peoples around the globe. He decided to learn the bamboo flute, an instrument in traditional Japanese culture. When electronic music hit in the ’80s, Utsumi was there. He became enthralled and entrenched in every corner of it: hip-hop, house, techno, breakbeat. Now he stands as one of the underground movement’s founding fathers.

When asked about the message his “Live at Eleven Expo EP” may have for fans and listeners, Izzy Utsumi is very brief.

“Express free will through music,” he says.

なんとなく、、、ブラックホールとしての内海イズル – written by: ヤマタカEYE

内海イズル氏の名前は、ずいぶん前からなんとなく知っていたのだが、なんとなくサバービア系のオシャレなDJという間違ったイメージを勝手に持っていたのでなんとなく敷居が高いというか、自分とはあまり縁がないのでは、と思っていた。

その後ブラジル博士だという話しを聞き興味をもったのだが、DJを聞く機会はないまま。。。
それが近年になって、とあるレイブパーティーのフライヤーに氏の名前を見つけ
オヨヨ？
ブラジル音楽がアウトサイドのそれもトランスのパーティーでかかっているのか？もしかしてジスモンチEMI時代の奇妙でファンシーなテクノポップスが山々にこだましてたりとか？
と想像は膨らみ非常に気になってきた。回りからも内海さんのDJイバヤとかヤバイとかウワサがメラメラと、、、一体どーゆー状況なんだろう？
氏のDJ初体験は青山CAYでのフレデリック　ガリアーノのライブの時となった。だるまさんの様な大きな目をフロアに向け光らせDJブースに仁王立ちでやっておられた。かかっていたのはライフフォースで聞くようなサイケデリックなハウス他で相当質の高い気持ち良さを提供して頂いたのであった。

そして遂に自分にとって生涯忘れられない体験がやってきた。
内海氏DJ未知との遭遇第２弾の事。
それも、とあるレイブパーティーであった。朝８時位から氏はDJを始めたのだが、割といきなり私の脳の配線を「バージョンアップの為、一度抜かしてもらいま～す」ズボズボ「はい、つなぎ直しぃ～」バチバチ。。。
私は青空に忽然と浮かぶ魚を見ている気持ちで、アタマから鳩が出そうになった。

そのときの氏は前半ほぼビートレスで美しくも奇妙極まりないMIXをされた。

イカがゆっくりと海底からあがってくる音
ケーブルがショートしてパチパチ弾け飛ぶ音
ときどきピヨピヨいうだけの音
光る風がスプラッシュする音
全周波数音
ピンボールマシンのボールが聞いている音
DUB化したロンパールームでボヨヨンの音

それはそれは不思議な音体験だった。
で当然それら様々な音が揺らめき山々に木々に鳥に風に虫に土に色々（ユニゾン、ハーモナイズ）しているのだった。その時の受けた衝撃は一生忘れられないというより、永遠に、という方が近い。

タイムレスに重要なエンバイロメント体験！うまく言葉にできないが、まぁ、いい家を一件建ててもらったようなものだ。なぜなら私はいつでも、氏が太陽光がさしはじめると共にかけた、あのゴーという地球音、あそこに帰ることができる。だが、ありがとう　と言うには不思議すぎるのであった。

あえてあの時を言葉にすれば

ウッガビビ
ビ～～～～～～～～ン

であった。

何かが走っている、何かぐわ。
でもとても静か。。。柔らかい。

でもあった。

そう何かが貫いていたのだ。
氏は色んなジャンルのものをかけた。おそらく現代音楽からブラジル、アフロキューバン、ミニマル、フリー、AOR….それらが全然コラージュぽくならず自然に一つになっており、つまるところ、何かとても確かで、かけがえのない、でも得体の知れない、わけの分からないもの、そういった何かが氏のDJの間中ずっと貫いていたのだった。
だから何をかけても違和感というのはなかった。奇妙だが、一体感、着地感、があり自然だった。
それは何千年も先のダンスミュージックを想起させた。
ノンビートでギンギンに盛り上がって踊り捲ってるビジョン、、、神官が吹く簫で舞う巫女みたいな。
一種の周波数だけをDJが調整してダンスミュージックになってる世界。

おもしろかったのが、氏がパーッカッションハウスの後に、非常に間の長いフリーのインプロバイズドピアノのソロをMIXした時。陽光の下、それまで踊っていた人が、その踊っていた形のままフリーズし、それらヒューマンスカルプチャーの間を一陣の風が通り抜け、そして不協和音のピアノがポロロン、ピロロン。。。まるで現代美術館の庭園の様なアート状況を造り出していた。

DJの話しばかりになりましたが、このCDを聞いて私は一種の観木感、、、のようなものを抱きました。
奇妙な枝ぶりの、思わず感服つかまつってしまうコブシをもった原生木を見ている様な。
自然の持つ自然なストレンジネス、ありえないフォルム。

Cutting-Edge Japanese Art Rocks Opening Ceremony
Japan Rave: The cutting edge of the Japanese underground scene

Cutting-edge music from the Japanese underground rocked the night through in the classical music stronghold of Austria.

The audience of 5,000 was enthralled. On being designated Cultural Capital of Europe, the Graz 2003 executive committee sent Volker Sernetz of local nightclub vipers to Japan to research the cutting-edge and richly varied Japanese music scene with a view to introducing new, contemporary blood into Graz. For a performance in Graz, Mr Sernetz built a team of DJs and VJs working the Japanese underground scene around the GOCOO Japanese drumming troupe that somehow makes a place for itself in trance. The live show that featured at the Cultural Capital of Europe opening ceremony found the musicians and the audience from throughout Graz joined in an enthusiasm that, together with the beat, carried them through to the early hours of the morning.
