India, a land of J C Bose, H J Bhabha, C V Raman, S Ramanujam, Rabindra Nath Tagore, R K Narayan, and many more great personalities in the field of Science, Mathematics, Literature; but it's shameful to know that India has the largest number of illiterate people in the world. According to UNESCO's Education For All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report 2013-14, India has the highest population of illiterates, i.e. 287 million or 37% of the total population of such people across the world. Just imagine more than one-third of the population of illiterate people in the world are Indians. What a worthy achievement in our 67 years of Independence! In the words of Gandhiji, illiteracy is India's shame and sin. The report said that insufficient financing is one of the main obstacles in achieving education for all. Aid to education fell by $1 billion in 2010 and 2011 in developing countries; said EFA 2013-14. These facts cannot be denied and hid under the curtains. Today illiteracy has become a major challenge facing our nation. We have also voted illiteracy as the biggest concern for India, with 18.78% votes in #India4India survey.

Only by reading this and expressing our deep concern over the issue is not going to help our country in any way. That's what TATA Capital believes and has launched a 'Do Right' initiative, that aims to spread the spirit of 'Doing Right' and providing people a platform to do the same. One such platform is the 'Journey of Doing Right' which aims to bring together Indians to provide solutions to the biggest challenges that India faces.

The Boat School

Varanasi, situated on the banks of Ganga river is considered as the holiest city in our country. It is a powerful hub of religious activity, culture and history. Millions of people visit Varanasi to take a 'holy dip' in Maa Ganga and to wash away a lifetime of sins in the sacred water. But this sacred water is exhausted with neglect over the years that has made this city as one of the most polluted sections of Maa Ganga.

On the bank of the Mother lot of children waste their time by engaging in various trades and activities like selling tea, rag-picking, working in hotels, etc. These children give less importance to their to their basic education. But, in the oldest city of the world, their are certain individuals with a contemporary way of thinking. To help these children, the NGO Guria, under the leadership of Ajeet Singh, a 'Do Righter', started an innovative 'Boat School'. This 'Boat School' has changed the philosophy of learning. Here children spend two hours after their regular school day, and study, play, or revise without any pressures or tensions. These children who are deprived of their childhood and cannot attend regular school are brought into this 'haven of learning' where they learn Mathematics, English, Computer, Hindi, Drawing and much more. Moreover this initiative creates a stimulating environment for these children where they can learn teamwork by performing activities like role-playing, playing games with rules, etc. This model can aid in social and moral development of children by performing various co-curricular activities.

Most of children attending 'Boat School' now, were not attending any school earlier. The team of NGO Guria motivated them and put them in this haven of learning. This 'Boat School' has lot more potential and further enhancements can surely be made. What this school really needs is a magical transformation. This transformation would include:

restoration and redecoration of the interiors,
making a library,
providing them with stationery, a painting kit, educational toys and CDs and a computer.

The total cost of the makeover of the boat and providing all the basic facilities is estimated to be Rs. 90,000. But to take this initiative and make it a reality, your support is needed. Providing the children with an enhanced learning atmosphere will make them an inspiration for millions across the country.

It was mid-august. I was sitting inside a cab heading Noida. I had to buy some materials needed for my final year project. I was thinking about the day in my college, about a girl, smiling and hiding it from the fellow passengers. Just then, I received a call.

"Hi!"

"Hi! I just want to say thanks to you for helping me out with that stuff. Those problems were really tough. I couldn't have managed to solve them on my own."

"You're welcome! Even I am glad to help you."

It was the last day for submitting our assignments. It would add to our scores in the semester. If anyone failed to submit it, he/she would lose 10 marks in the internals. I submitted the assignments a day before. And that day I helped out this girl in solving and finally submitting them.

There was a boring lecture going on. Me and my friends decided to bunk the class to have our daily treat. Every day we used to bunk one or two classes either to treat ourselves with fast foods, or coffee or to just treat our eyes by watching first year girls. There was a door at the back of our classroom. Once the lecturer turns back to write something on the board, you can easily exit the classroom through it, without even lecturer noticing it (our past 3 years experience). It was so easy and we did that in exactly the same way. Just when we were entering the corridor to the main exit of the building, we saw one of our classmates, a 'maal' (the term used by boys when they talk about girls); more precisely 'our own maal'. She was sitting on the floor, with some printed papers, some books and some blank sheets. With a pen in her hand, she was writing something. I tried to figure out what she was writing. May be she bunked the class to write her assignments. My friends were not much interested in what she was doing because they were more interested in watching the new 'maals'. But I knew it was the right time to talk to a girl whom you have talked only a little, but your heart always desired to talk more and later cursed you for not being able to convert a small talk into a big conversation. I just excused my friends telling them that I need to go to the washroom, they should go and I'll come in few minutes. They just moved ahead and I went into the washroom to look into the mirror and check whether I had the courage to start the conversation with her. I gathered enough courage and came out of the washroom in 10 seconds or so and went straight to her.

"Hey! What are you doing here? There's a class going on."

She just looked upwards, towards me.

"Yeah, I know, But I need to complete my assignments today itself. You know it's the last day."

I already guessed it right.

"Okay. So how much have you done till now?"

"Not much I am finding them difficult. I mean these problems are really tough. By the way, what are you doing here? Not attending the class?"

"The class was boring. So I decided to bunk."

"Okay. What about your assignments, are they completed?"

"Yeah, I submitted them yesterday."

There was a silence for few seconds and I was still standing in front of her, and she needs to look up to talk to me.

And then, she broke the silence.

"Will you mind helping me out with these problems?"

I was glad she just asked what I was thinking to ask her but could not gather the courage.

With a cheerful face I replied,

"Of course! Who would mind helping a beautiful girl like you."

I just sat down on the floor with her. My heart was pounding hard and my mind was somewhere in a dreamland. Was I dreaming? I gave it a second thought. I pinched myself just to make sure that this was a reality, also ensuring that she does not notice it.

We worked on the problems together, learning and solving, and sharing our experiences of college life, having fun and enjoying each and every moment we were spending together.

And when we finished the work and were going to the concerned faculty to submit the assignments, she just asked

"Did it hurt?"

"What?"

"You pinched yourself?"

I was amazed how she noticed that!

"Hey! I hear some noises. Are you in a cab, or a bus, or something like that? Going somewhere?"

"Yes, in a cab, going to Noida."

"What for?"

"I just need to buy some materials for my project."

"Okay! Are you alone?"

"Yes. Why?"

"You should have taken someone with you. Just to talk on the way. I mean it's boring to travel alone."

I paused for a second and asked

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing much."

"Why don't you come with me?"

I know I was crazy asking this. I was already travelling for about 15 minutes and it was only a total journey of 45 minutes from my college.

"Are you crazy?"

"That's what I was thinking. I just followed my heart. Well! It doesn't matter much to me if you agree."

"I mean you are already in a cab and moving. How can I..."

"It's only 15 minutes since I am travelling. I can return to Parichowk in about 20 minutes, meanwhile you can get ready. I just realised that it's boring to travel alone."

"I meant you should have taken any of your friends from the hostel. It's already late."

"Look, I don't have much time I will already be in Noida in half an hour. Forget everything just listen to your heart, what it says. If it says yes, come to Parichowk I'll be waiting, if it says no...it's okay...I will understand that I was crazy enough to ask you."

She paused for 2 seconds and replied

"Are you serious?"

"I am definitely not joking."

"Okay. Give me 2 minutes time. Let me listen to my heart. I will call you. If I don't I am sorry."

"Okay!"

She disconnected. I was not sure whether she would call back, but I don't know why my heart was saying that she will. I knew it was crazy, but still I was happy that at least I gathered enough courage to say it clearly what my heart asked me to.

After 2 minutes a message beeped in my phone. My God! It was from her. It read

"Do you really want me to come with you?"

"You doubt?"

"No....Okay. Get off the cab. I am getting ready. And you know, you are damn crazy."

I was so happy that she agreed.

"Thank you. Thanks a lot. I am so glad that you agreed. But don't take much time to get ready, I'll be at Parichowk in 25 minutes."

"I am not going to listen you this time. At least 40 minutes. Okay?"

"Okay!"

Without wasting a second I asked the driver to stop and got out of the cab, payed him, crossed the road and took another cab back to Parichowk. I waited there for 20 minutes and then she came. She was looking as the most beautiful, the most lovely girl I have ever seen.

I still remember the day. The day when I felt that I was the luckiest guy in the world.

Mind always uses some calculations and manipulations to put forward an idea, while heart knows no known theories, no known calculations, still puts an idea.

"There are still some laws of universe undiscovered by humans."

Why can India NEVER be clean

You might have heard about the various campaigns launched by the Indian Government like "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), 2014", "Total Sanitation Campaign (1999)" for cleaning India. But mere these campaigns are not enough for making India a clean country. When you go out from your home to the streets you will find "Clean India" only a daydream. I list out 5 reasons in support of this conclusion.

1. India is full of 'Spitting Monsers'

These monsters are present in every city, every town and village in India. You can find them anywhere; on the roads, in public transports, and on all public places. Every time you take a public transport you will find such 'chewing monsters' as your fellow travellers. Paan or Gutka, whatever it is, they will chew it while making variety of faces. It doesn't take much time when these 'chewing monsters' become 'spitting monsters'. They spit here and there. They spit everywhere. They don't even care whether you got a newly painted wall of your house, they will always find a corner where they can spit the dirt of their mouth. Every street, every wall and every corner of India has the sign of this master-art.

2. Why to use dustbins when you have roads

Golgappe, chaat, aloo paranthe; your mouth (if you are an Indian) may have started watering when you read these delicious words and you may have pictured yourself in the streets with a roadside vendor. You may have also noticed (yes, in your imagination) the empty plates lying all around the food stall. Indians cannot even imagine a roadside stall without empty plates and glasses all around it. Most of the vendors don't keep a dustbin with their stalls and even if they keep one people won't find worth to use it.

3. Moongfalis (Peanuts) are the best time-pass

How many of you have seen a vendor selling moongfalis (peanuts) in a bus or in a train, on a railway platform or on a bus station by claiming them to be the best time-pass. 'Moongfali khayiye, time pass kijiye (Have peanuts, have a time-pass)'. Most of the Indians don't prefer reading books or magazines (other than 'Manohar Kahaniyan'), they only prefer to eat moongfalis and have some useless political discussions.
The problem is not with moongfalis the problem is with the people. They will eat nuts and throw the shells anywhere they found it easy to; even the place where they are sitting. Buses, trains, railway platforms, bus stations, etc. are always packed with these nutshells lying here and there.

4. Indians love to shit on roadsides and fields

More than half of the population of India practice open defecation. Even if you provide them a proper toilet, they won't use it. Every morning they go to the fields with a jug full of water in their hands to perform their daily routine.

5. "Hum do humare nao (We are two, we have nine)"

"Hum do humare nao", is the principle of Indians' family planning. The population of India has crossed 1.2 billion and is still increasing. More the number of people, more will be the 'spitting monsters', the more aloo parantha lovers, the more they will eat moongfalis to have time-pass and the more they will publicly defecate.
"Hum do humare nao" can do nothing for Indian couples, only they can make their own cricket teams.
