It seems like I have started to dislike giveaways here? The reason, Even before I finish one giveaway I got another in queue resulting in me writing less these days. So intentionally , I am delaying the next Giveaway that would have been live Today i.e. 10 (ten) Nova PDF licenses to be given away. Today I am going to talk about something more complicated.

I will be talking about a small Microsoft power toy or utility Fiddler2 which can log all HTTP traffic between your computer and Internet. I would just like to clarify at the start only, this tool is not for novice users. It is for advance users who know what they are doing. Even though this tool cant do any harm, still novice users should not use it if they dont know what they are doing.

With Fiddler,you can inspect all HTTP(S) traffic, set breakpoints, and “fiddle” with incoming or outgoing data with the help of a powerful event-based scripting subsystem.

This small utility though very useful to system administrators , can be useful to avaerage users too if they want to know about the details of his system getting connected to internet and the different http connections it make. It can be useful if you suspect something phishy is going in the background.You need to have .NET Framework ver. 2 installed on your system to run this application.

I wont go more into the technical details here as its very difficult for a normal user to understand it. If someone wants to talk more about it, he/ she can start a thread at Forums and we can talk about it there.

Secure data by preventing Restore of deleted data

The title of the post may seem wrong or odd to most of you. The title is correct and I am talking about other side of story of data security. Any deleted data over your hard disk can be recovered using specialised applications even if your hard disk is not working or you have deleted it from your hard disk including Recycle Bin. The risks are more if you take the system for repair to your local computer technician or you leave it unsecured or you sold your PC to someone etc.

So how to make deleted files and folders unrecoverable ? It can be done by overwriting all free space on your hard disk(s) that contain fragments of deleted files with the random data to avoid any possibility of recovery. You may ask how to do this? Well, a small FREE application called “Prevent Restore” will help you do that.

It uses several security algorithms (DoD 5220.22, Gutmann you can replace deleted data with random characters, digits, spaces e.t.c.). While writing Prevent Restore fills out information to the end of each cluster, leaving no chance to restore even just one word!

The concept of doing something like this is new for me. I never thought about this if it can be done in someway like this. As the possibility of restoring a overwritten data is bleak , it looks like a great tool for everyone. As WikiPedia talks about same here :

“Since 1996 …there’s no practical evidence that overwritten data can be recovered. Moreover, there are good reasons to think that it cannot.”

Prevent Restore makes unrecoverable temporary files, cached files, logs e.t.c. which were also previously deleted. It does offer a paid version but I was not able to differentiate the features.

Web is full of unlimited possibilities in every niche you can think of. Take example of “Search”. Google made search a compulsory part of our life and first thing we do while we are trying to find some information over the web is to Search Google or any other search Engine.

Today I will talk about a new dimension of Web Search. Using Face Recognition technology, now you can search and find Similar faces all over the web. You just need to upload a good resolution picture and the next moment you get Pics from all over the web having similar Faces to that of the uploaded pic. All this can be done using “Pictriev” a face Search Engine.

All this is done using face recognition twchnology. It detects the Face in the uploaded Pic and then tries to find similar faces from all over the web. Results vary depending on resolution or quality of photo. Better resolution and quality of uploaded pic produces better results.

To get a reliable answer, please enter a photo that contains a frontal face with the gap between the eyes more than 80 pixels wide. The results are displayed for each detected face in the photo. Click a rectangular area to select a face. The references of photos with similar faces will be showed as thumbnails.

If the pic contains more than one face, it will find similar faces to all the detected faces in hat Pic. Obviously, the results depend on number of similar images available on the web. So a more popular Pic will bring more results compared to a average person.

You should keep in mind, here we are talking of similar faces not the same faces. Hence the results are of different people but having similar faces.
