The basic reason behind installing Windows Server is the Hyper-V role. Using this I can run virtual machine side by side doing different kinds of testing. Yesterday I just thought let's try and start the SuperFetch service. SO, like every other user clicke on 'start' -> run and typed 'services.msc' and I was surprised to see the following box.

The Extended Tab of the Services.msc was blank. On the other hand clicking on Standard tab was showing all services by default. Extended tab is very much useful to get the brief description about the particular you want to start/stop. Well, I tried few tricks to check it out but could not make it out. As the OS was newly installed I was wondering what could be reason for such type of issue. After searching online (Live+Google) I got the hint. And I got landed up on the 1 of the KB articles page of Microsoft Support site saying "Several dialog boxes are blank." As it has provided the what I really wanted. I started the 'cmd' with administrative privileges and run the following command 'regsve32 jscript.dll' I got the pop up saying 'DllRegisterServer in jscript.dll succeeded.' Well, while the Services.msc is still running I clicked on the Extended tab again and here I got the detailed services' list.

There are small small things that we generally don't look up to. This was the essential element. Microsoft Jscript Library is required if you want to see such content. As far I know I don't remember how Jscript.dll was not registered. But never mind, as always http://support.microsoft.com came to the rescue and job was done.

Cheers,

Avi

Subscribe to this RSS Feed http://feeds.feedburner.com/aviraj

Microsoft Hyper-V Server

Well, everybody who is into technical fields must be knowing about virtualization. Over the years PC Processing power has been evolving like anything. Years back if you wanted to try out any new technology specially networking, we were hunting for new boxes for learning the technology. If we see couple of years back story, we were familiar with the terms like Virtual PC, VMWare Workstation etc. The basic concept behind virtualization software allowing you to run multiple Operating Systems on 1 Physical Box eliminating needs for additional workstations and hardware like switches, cables. But most of them we used to use on our x86 platform were the type-2 or hosted virtualization products.

Today, we will discuss about the native hypervisor, which leverages the full potential of Intel VT (Intel Virtualization Technology) instruction set. Intel VT and AMD V are the hardware assisted virtualization technologies. Microsoftr Windows Server 2008 comes with built-in role called Hyper-V. The requirement for the role is your system should be having processor supporting Intel VT or AMD V. To use Hyper-V you can install this as a role in Windows Server 2008 or you can download a separate product called as Microsoft Hyper-V Server. Microsoft Hyper-V Server is based upon Windows Server 2008 Core and support only Hyper-V role. It is totally CLI based version that can be controlled from other computer or using SCVMM.

To test drive the free Microsoft Hyper-V Server click here to download.
In the next part we will discuss about Hyper-V in detail and how we can utilize the features of hyper-v.

Enjoy
Subscribe to this RSS Feed http://feeds.feedburner.com/aviraj

पुन्हा परतुया ब्लॉग्गिंगकड़े..

hello all...
It's been months since my last post on my blog. The security is key enhancement where Win2k8 really proves to be a step ahead of any other operating systems available today. New virtualization tools, Web resources, and security enhancements help save time, reduce costs, and provide a platform for a dynamic and optimized datacenter.

I have been a huge fan of UNIX platform over the years but the new feature set that ms has come up with the new os is really telling me to rediscover Windows Server System Platform. Well over the time we will discover the new features provided in the Windows Server 2008. In today's post we will just list out the top 5 key features that I feel makes this server os the best out of all till date.

Lets start with the first feature...
1 - Hyper-V : Virtualization layer added on the top of Windows Server 2008 makes it easy for deploying different operating systems on the host machine. We will discuss about this role in the upcoming discussion.

2 - Terminal Services: Terminal Services have gone one step ahead. TS Gateway can be useful for providing access to the corporate network using RDP over HTTPS. TS RemoteApp and TS Web Access really helping clients giving away access to only required application rather than giving entire desktop.

3 - NAP (Network Access Protection): NAP is the only feature in Win 2008 that is not present in any of the existing operating systems. As NAP checks the health of the client computer before allowing it to access corporate network, this feature would be really helpful for organizations.

4 - Server Core: OH !!! are you a UNIX Fan or Linux Lover. Do you really like commands over the GUI. Well, there you have the Server Core edition of Windows Server 2008. Be it your branch office deployment or dedicated server in your environment with specific role you require. The Server Core providing total reliability with less maintenancem, enhanced security. With NO GUI, NO .NET Framework/CLR under the hood. You get just command prompt to configure and manage your rock solid server.

5 - Server Manager - Simple Management & Easy Administration: Server Manager is must have tool for every server os. With just single MMC Snap-in you can configure and manage entire server. A total unified solution for managing server makes it really easy to Add/Remove/Configure any of your Server roles or features. Now, even the developers who had never done administration can do some of the basic administration easily for their organizations.

That is all from my side about the top 5 features I feel making this server os the best. Henceforth, we will have a series of posts exploring single feature at time.
Subscribe to this RSS Feed http://feeds.feedburner.com/aviraj

Blogging Begins...

Hello everyone. It's been a long time I have been just visiting various blogs. Now, I feel that why can't I start blogging.

Well, I am a technology addicted, so most of the time you would expect a blog that will contain a lot about technology related stuff.
