Tom’s now seen it and, honestly, it doesn’t make much sense to him. Must be a cultural thing. Spotify launches in Australia and Tom can’t wait to try it out. He’s just been a bit busy trying not to die on his motorcycle. Someone over at DISH network has been listening to the podcast. DISHWorld is a new offering partnering with Roku to bring you international TV with some sort of strange requirements. This is a good direction people. Hope to see this in more than just the US. Tom takes on the new receiver offerings from Marantz and Denon. There is a lot to be excited about with these. </itunes:summary>

Tom cleaned it up the best he could. Looking for a new streaming device? Here’s a graphic to help you out. Funny part is that everything is 1080p except the Wii. Clint has Dish so we talk about the new Hopper box. Time Warner CEO out of the loop? Who would have guessed? Tom wonders what it will take to get the people in power to understand what we want. He’s thinking rebellion. Dolby Atmos – the reason Tom might go to the theaters again. Coming to your home…never. This week’s soup-to-nuts: Tom puts Clint on the spot for TV recommendations. </itunes:summary>

You’ll also need one of their brand new receivers to make it work. Samsung has a new display that Liz thinks is overpriced but Tom is still excited about. Here’s a hint – OLED. The new ISP from New Zealand that Tom and Liz discuss has already shut down their new service. Looks like the Kiwis will have to use VPNs to get Pandora like the rest of us. But Global Mode would have been cool. This week in Netflix – does having your content on multiple sources devalue it? Dish Network thinks so. Tom and Liz weigh in. The HBO Go model and why Tom and Liz (and most of you) think it stinks. Tom gives a preview of his Pioneer SE-MJ591 Headphone review. At $300, they aren’t perfect, but they sound pretty awesome. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>It’s our 5 year anniversary (but we don’t mention that on the podcast). Hurray for us! Liz is back and this week we talk about the upcoming summer movies. Are you excited? We dissect the trailers for Spiderman, Dark Knight Rises, and Prometheus. Also, Mother’s Day is around the corner and we discuss the Audioholics gift guide and add a few of our own. Tom talks about his Sonomax eers Molded Earphone PSC-250 review (coming to Audioholics soon) and a bit more on the new Axiom speakers. Liz got her husband an Emotiva amp for his birthday. Now that is true love. After the break – some words on PCM from Clint. Oh, and here is that interview with Joss Whedon that everyone is talking about and that video of a lion trying to eat a child.
Here was the question:
Let me know if I have this wrong, but it’s my understanding that BluRay player decoding has two features: BluRay decoding and audio mixing. Thus, if you are listening to secondary audio sources (like director’s commentary) it is literally mixed in on the fly, so the only place to do it is in the player. True?
And Clint’s response:
The typical question usually has to do with the button sounds and the issue of LPCM vs. native TrueHD. The deal was, BD was designed to mix everything and output LPCM from the get-go. It wasn’t really made to output native Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD, etc… Thus, on earlier players, when you finally COULD output TrueHD via HDMI – so that your receiver could decode it – you missed the layer of button sounds, etc… it never made it into the mix because you were outputting the Dolby TrueHD “pre” mix.
As far as I am aware, newer, more advanced players now actually re-encode to include the Dolby TrueHD source plus the button overlay sounds into a Dolby TrueHD output. It’s sort of bass-ackwards but that’s what people said they wanted.
You could say that misguided audiophiles actually changed the course of Blu-ray by insisting on having uncompressed Dolby TrueHD output via the HDMI jack – where it was really never intended to be. Apparently uncompressed PCM is for losers. </itunes:summary>

Liz is out of town this week so Rob H. steps back in. Lots to discuss including a listener question about PCM, an article on Ars about Mastered for iTunes, and 4k/8k news. We have a Netflix news this week – CEO has been ranting and they’ve been affecting ratings. Tom and Rob debate the new Hobbit movie being shot and shown in 48fps. Rob thinks no, Tom thinks all the people that are whining about how it looks need to shut up. Rob has a warning about Windows 8. Star Trek: The Next Generation is getting an update for Blu-ray. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Because Tom was a slacker over the weekend, he missed doing the podcast with Liz. Enter Rob H., once again, who, by virtue of having much free time, gets another guest spot on the podcast. This week Tom and Rob discuss Apple iPhone rumors (Liquidmetal and a new screen), Google Glasses (uber-cool), and Valve’s “wearable” computers (whatever those are). What does $9000 get you in a sub? The Paradigm Sub 2. Tom and Rob analyze. For soup to nuts, Rob lists some of the most popular Internet Direct speakers and Tom gives his “off the cuff” opinion. This includes offerings from GoldenEar Technology, Emotiva Pro, Ascend Acoustics, and Philharmonic Audio. Lastly, high-end audio demos and how they try to trick you. Being prepared for the BS is key. And knowing is half the battle. Tom is in the process of reviewing the new eers PSC-250 custom-molded earphones. Look for a full report on a podcast soon.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Tom starts with a listener complaint. Hopefully that will be sorted. Feel free to report back if there is still a problem. So, if you don’t want to hear Tom insult the entire Internet, make fun of a colleague’s name in an extremely inappropriate way (he really is sorry for that one), and mock pretty much everything, you should skip this episode. Someone must have slipped something in his coffee. To start with, Tom takes a peak at CloudOn, a FREE app that gives iPad owners (and soon others) access to Microsoft Office. How is this legal exactly? Tom doesn’t care, it works and he loves it. Steven Spielberg proves that you can release a movie on Blu-ray, remaster it, and not add 3D (take note Lucas). Tom is taking the credit for the new Nook (and whatever Amazon comes out with that has a light). Tom takes a stab at CE Pro (again). Here is the source article. You judge. CE Pro’s article on HDMI problems was a little better, though. D-Link MovieNite gives you (up to) 1080p streaming from Vudu, Netflix, and Pandora for less than $60. Oh, and YouTube but seriously, who cares? Tom reviews the OtterBox Defender Series Case for iPad 2/3. Review on Audioholics on the way. How much is your privacy worth? This article doesn’t answer the question at all, draws dubious conclusions from the cited data, and generally confused Tom and Liz. What’s your take? This week in Netflix – a new PAC. Too little too late? We’ll see. </itunes:summary>

Liz has some Best Buy news. Listener John compares Lossless to iTunes Match to Mastered for iTunes. You’ll want to hear this one (or read this link). There are lots of hint out there for Netflix to hear, but are they listening? On the market for a subwoofer? The correct answer is “always”. Check out this contest to win one from SVS. <itunes:summary>Ever wonder about highly directional sound? The Soundlazer promises just that. While it still has a ways to go before meeting its funding goal, it is well on its way. This is a tech that has obvious applications in a retail setting but might also work in a home. Tom would love to check one out and Liz wants to be shown that it isn’t some elaborate hoax. Firmware updates have become fairly standard these days and Tom doesn’t like it. Liz doesn’t like that they are now updating the ends of video games based on players’ reactions. Would you pay extra to be allowed to twitter while in a movie theater? How about for 2D, is that worth extra to you? Google wants all your data and users are crying foul. Tom thinks it is all an overreaction. What do you think? Oh, and your new Samsung TV may be spying on you. So there’s that. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Lots of stuff this week. Pioneer has a new line of receivers, and Tom is particularly impressed with the $250 model. PlayGo, a device about five years too late. Liz is going to check out Watch It! – a service that updates you when something you want to see is available. We talk about This American Life because, well, everyone is. Axiom Audio announces new speakers. Which aren’t ready to ship yet, aren’t on their website, and are still very much theoretical. Tom, as you might expect, is skeptical (as he is of all bi/di/omni-polar designs that aren’t surrounds). This week in Netflix? They suck. But, apparently, not as bad as GameStop. So that is something. Will The Hunter bring movies into your home theater before they hit the theaters? Probably not. But maybe it is a first step. Check out the video of using lasers to see sound after the break.

<itunes:summary>Tom and Liz are getting used to their new schedule and Liz is getting used to her new (old) phone. Liz found a post with some of the first sounds ever recorded. And they are CREEPY! The Olympics go ULTRA! Is there such a thing as a “bad” review? Maybe. But there are definitely bad ways to react to a review. Tom dissects this article. Listener questions from Jason (two) and an announcement from Andy (the EMP Tek E5Ti tower speakers are on sale for $275 a pair – just $25 more than the bookshelves! Jump on that if you have the spare cash). Liz talks a bit about how she got her phone unlocked and Spotify. Tom talks about this article on 24-bit/192kHz encoding. It’s a deep read so take your time. Don’t forget to comment on the last podcast to enter to win a Samsung Galaxy Nexus case. Oh, yeah, and some new Apple crap was released. You should totally sell your first born to get it. </itunes:summary>

Google is coming to Kansas City – and Tom would be too if he was moving back to the states. Tom and Clint wrote an article about how Apple would handle home theater. Aereo sued and no one is surprised. But are they legal? Tivo has a new box thingie. Here’s the xkcd that Liz was talking about. Someone needs to tell Tim Burton that there are more actors in the world. AT&T redefines “unlimited“. This week in Netflix – Comcast. Some more advice on how to audition speakers in a store. We can’t remember if we got to this topic on this version of the podcast but pirates care more about video quality than the studios.
How to enter the contest:

Post a comment below (only one comment will be considered an entry)
Add a signature line to your forum ID with a link back to AV Rant (email Tom with a link to one of your posts). Something like, “I’m an AV Rant podcast fan!” or “AV Rant Podcast – Putting the Angry back in AV” are appropriate.

Yes, you get a separate entry for each forum signature (one entry per forum). No, we don’t want to piss off forums across the net so if someone asks you to remove it, please do and email Tom. Please be respectful of other forums and don’t make your signatures overly large or obnoxious. We want more listeners, not more haters (Tom does that fine all by himself). Tom wasn’t going to do a podcast this week but changed his mind at the last minute. Rob H. visits again and the two have a lot to talk about. Rob is interested in a study on piracy and how it effects movie ticket sales. The Oatmeal sums up how exactly piracy can be best fought. A California Senator is not ashamed to admit that he wasted almost 2 million dollars trying to ban video games. A bit on THX certification. This week in Netflix – all the stuff you won’t be able to access since the Starz deal ended. The FitDesk – exactly what your back didn’t need. This week’s Soup to Nuts highlights two different programs. First is Audio DiffMaker, a program to compare audio files for differences. Second is Harman’s How to Listen program. Both are free so try them out. Tom couldn’t get the Harman program to work on his Mac at recording time but downloaded it again later and it installed properly. More on this next week. </itunes:summary>

He’s worked on tons of stuff over the years (check out his IMDb here) and has great insight into the workings of Hollywood and the movie-making machine. Tom and Clint talk with PJ about the movie making process, some of the recent trends in movies (specifically 3D), and who is to blame for bad movies. <itunes:summary>Welcome to the last podcast where at least one of the core AV Rant members will be standing in the states. Yes, we’re fleeing like rats off a sinking ship. Liz is off to London this weekend and is sort of stressed. Tom steps up and basically talks the whole time. If you are more of a Liz fan – don’t worry. She promises to be back in form next week (if she is around for a podcast – we’ll see how fast the Brits are at hooking up Internet). If you can’t get enough of Tom’s voice (there is probably a medical condition for that), head over to AV Week where he was a panelist in this week’s podcast. This week, Tom admits he was wrong (don’t tell his wife) about iCloud Match. Liz liked Tom’s article on Defining Confusing Audio Terms over at Audioholics. Why aren’t we shooting video in 120Hz? We need to get James Camereon on this one! Universal Remote Control tells it like it is and Liz thinks it’s an Onion article. Sony’s new game system (PSVita) is here and leads to a discussion on downloads versus buying physical media. For the Soup to Nuts, you get a pre-review of the OtterBox Commuter and Defender cases for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Full review including a giveaway to follow. Stay tuned! Also, check back here this time tomorrow for an interview with writer, director, actor, musician PJ Pesce! Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley! <itunes:summary>Liz is off across the pond doing moving things so Rob H. steps in on short notice. They talk a bunch about streaming and piracy. Specifically about this article at Forbes which makes a lot of good points. Amazon Prime streaming is on the way as is a new streaming service from a partnership between Verizon and Redbox. Redbox is now the only kiosk rental service in town (I’m betting some of you were surprised that his wasn’t already the case). Tom reviews the new Chrome Beta app for Android and finds it, in a word, awesome. Emotiva has a new processor, the XMC-1, and consumer reaction has been mixed. But, of course, that could all change once it actually ships. Got a bit of change in your pocket and thinking of upgrading your speakers? Tom and Rob take you through some of the ways to audition speakers when you don’t have much to experience. Oh, and check out Brad Sucks. He totally doesn’t. <itunes:summary>A few disclaimers: We make up (co-opt really) a new curse word. Liz and Tom, for a time, mistake Neil Young for Neil Simon. Whoops. This week in Netflix? WB acts like a bunch of…well, CADS. Tom thinks you can take the conversation in this article and pretty much switch out the local “evil” the studios think they must sue into non-existence. Tom’s new phone is here, some impressions of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus compared to Tom’s many iDevices. Want a sub? Love SVS? Don’t want to pay for it? Head over to the Audioholics forums. Tom tackles a headphone review (here’s the data he used), MP3s and compression, and the “magic” of analogue sources. Time shifting streamed content (warning, pdf)? Yeah, that’ll be around for a long time. A few digressions into comic books, super bowl home theaters (that suck), and Liz has a word of thanks. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley! To see our (mostly) complete collection of show videos, click here. Download Tom’s FREE ebook Bob Moore: No Hero which is pretty much available everywhere. You can also check out Tom’s new book, Bob Moore: Desperate Times on Amazon, iTunes, Nook, and pretty much everywhere else. Friend Tom and Liz on Google+ to join in on one of our hangouts.</itunes:summary>
