Jesus as the Passover Lamb

The first Passover wasn’t just about escaping Egypt—it was a picture of the final rescue God would provide through Jesus.

The story of the first passover, the Death of the Firstborn, is such a deep and beautiful story. We taught this story again during campmeeting to our Primary kids. You could have heard a pin drop as the “hyssop” branch was dipped in the “blood” and painted above the door of the Israelite’s home.

The instructions God gave for the passover lamb were specific, representing the Passover Lamb to come – Jesus Christ.

“Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year…” Exodus 12:5

When you slow down and really look at the Passover story, you begin to notice something—God didn’t leave anything to chance. Every detail mattered. And every detail points us to Jesus. Jesus was our Passover Lamb, unblemished, without sin, the Firstborn Son of God.

1 Peter 2:22-24 says, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”

The blood of the lamb over the doorposts saved the families from certain death within our household. While the blood of the lamb was unable to cleanse us from sin, it represented the blood of Jesus which takes away the sins of the world.

“And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.” Exodus 12:7

It is only by Christ’s righteousness that any of us can be saved. Even the Israelites on that fateful night could not have eternal life had it not been for Jesus death on the cross.

Revelation 7: 14 says, “These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

The passover lamb was to have no broken bones. “In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.” Exodus 12:46

And when Jesus was crucified, not one of His bones was broken—just as Scripture foretold. Even in the smallest details, God was showing us what was to come.

In Psalm 34:20 it was prophesied, “He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.”

The prophecy was fulfilled! “These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” John 19:36

And then there’s the covering. The blood on the doorposts marked the home. When the destroying angel passed through Egypt, those covered by the blood were spared. It wasn’t about who was inside—it was about whether they were covered.

“It is a night to be much observed unto the Lord for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the Lord to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.” Exodus 12:42

God delivered His people from the bondage of Egypt. He will deliver His people from the bondage of sin at the second coming.

“Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. I am the Alpha and the Omega, ” says the Lord God, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:7

You might enjoy listening to my reading of the profound story The House Across the Hedge by Grace Livingston Hill. I read this story to my Primary students at campmeeting. The children sat on the edge of their seats and you could have heard a pin drop!

Easter is a special time of year for Christians as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As parents or teachers, it’s important to teach children the Easter story in a way that is age-appropriate and meaningful to them.

I hope you find these tips and strategies for teaching the Easter story to children helpful.

How to Teach the Easter Story to Children

There are lots of ways you can teach children the Easter story and I’m sharing some of my favorites below. Of course, the best way to teach children is always through everyday life and being available to answer questions and share your own thoughts about this important event in history.

Use Visual Aids

Visual aids such as pictures, videos, and even props can be helpful in engaging children in the Easter story. You can use illustrations or pictures to show key events such as Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem or his crucifixion.

You can also use props such as a crown of thorns or a cross to help children understand the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Tell the Story in an Engaging Way

When teaching the Easter story to children – especially young children, it’s important to the story engaging and interactive.

You can use storytelling techniques such as asking questions, using sound effects or even acting out the story. This can help children to remember the key events and understand their significance.

And honestly, I have found that any time I take the time to talk to kids and share my thoughts and listen to their questions they enjoy the interaction.

Most kids want to spend time talking to the adults they love! Take advantage of a good conversation every chance you can get.

Use Age-Appropriate Language

When teaching the Easter story, it’s important to use language that is appropriate for the age of the children you are teaching. You can use simpler language for younger children and, of course, more detailed language for older children.

This can help children to understand the story better and ask questions if they need clarification.

Relate the Story to Children’s Lives

Another effective way to teach the Easter story is to relate it to children’s lives. You can use real-life examples to show how the story relates to their lives. For example, you can talk about forgiveness and how it applies to everyday situations.

Encourage Children to Ask Questions

Encouraging children to ask questions is an important part of teaching the Easter story. Children may have questions or concerns about the story, and it’s important to address them in an open and honest way.

This can help children understand the story better and feel more engaged.

The Easter Story for Children

You can read the story in the Bible in the book of Luke: It’s found in all four gospels as well. Luke 23:32-24:12. If you are reading the story to children you’ll need to use a good translation that is easy to understand or be sure to explain the words and context as you read out of the King James Version.

Printable Easter Story

You can also read this version of the Easter story below:

Easter is one of the most significant events in the Christian faith. It is the time when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The Easter story is a story of hope, love, sacrifice, and victory over death.

Read the Easter Story

The Easter story begins with Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, where the people welcomed him with shouts of “Hosanna!” and waving palm branches. They believed that Jesus was the Messiah who had come to save them from their sins.

But the religious leaders were threatened by Jesus’ popularity and plotted to have him arrested and put to death.

On the night before he was crucified, Jesus gathered with his disciples in the upper room to celebrate the Passover meal. During the meal, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

He also took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

After the meal, Jesus and his disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed to God, asking him to take the cup of suffering from him. But he also said, “Not my will, but yours be done.”

While he was praying, Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ disciples, arrived with a group of soldiers and betrayed Jesus with a kiss. Jesus was arrested and taken to the high priest’s house for trial.

The next day, Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. Despite finding no fault in Jesus, Pilate gave in to the demands of the people and sentenced Jesus to be crucified.

Jesus was beaten, mocked, and forced to carry his own cross to the place of execution, called Golgotha. There, he was nailed to the cross and left to die.

As Jesus hung on the cross, he forgave his executioners and prayed for them, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

He also spoke to one of the criminals being crucified beside him, promising him eternal life in paradise. Then, after hours of suffering, Jesus cried out, “It is finished!” and died.

But the story doesn’t end there. On the third day after his death, Jesus rose from the dead, just as he had promised.

The women who went to his tomb found it empty, and an angel told them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!”

Jesus appeared to his disciples, proving that he was alive, and then ascended into heaven, promising to return one day.

The Empty Tomb Fingerplay

The Empty Tomb fingerplay is a fun and interactive way to teach toddlers about the Easter story. Here’s how to do it:

Start by making a fist with one hand, which represents the tomb.

Say, “This is the tomb where Jesus was laid.”

Use your other hand to cover the fist, as if closing the tomb. Say, “The tomb was sealed with a big stone.”

Pause for a moment, then say, “But on the third day, the stone was rolled away!”

Use your fingers to open the fist, revealing an empty space. Say, “The tomb was empty! Jesus had risen from the dead!”

Repeat the fingerplay a few times, encouraging children to join in and mimic your movements.

The Empty Tomb fingerplay is a great way to teach children about the key events of the Easter story and help them to understand the significance of Jesus’ resurrection. By making it interactive and engaging, children are more likely to remember the story and its message.

When we read the story of Exodus, it’s easy to see it as ancient history—a battle between Moses and Pharaoh, God and Egypt. But the truth is, these stories are more than history. They’re a warning for the times we’re living in right now.

Just as Pharaoh hardened his heart against God’s truth, the Bible tells us that in the end times many will reject God’s Word and believe a lie. We need to be ready and watchful.

The plagues of Egypt were meant to show God’s power, expose Egypt’s false gods, and call His people out of bondage. What I find so interesting is that the book of Revelation describes a coming series of plagues that in some ways mirror those in the book of Exodus—reminding us that history often repeats itself, and God is still calling His people to choose Him above the world.

Will we soften when God reveals truth, or will we resist like Pharaoh, letting pride and fear harden our hearts? As we study these parallels, let’s ask ourselves: Am I ready to stand firm in faith, even when the world is shaking? Because time is short and whatever we’re going to do, we need to do quickly.

This article is part two of this series: Exodus: A Parallel for the End Times. You can read the first article here.

The Plagues

When Moses was commissioned by God to go before the Pharaoh and plead for the release of the Israelites, “Pharaoh’s heart became hard” (Exodus 7:22) and he refused to let the Israelites go.

In 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12, the Bible says, “They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.”

Pharaoh refused to believe the truth that Moses was speaking and his heart was hardened. This is such an important reminder! When God shows us His truth we have a choice to believe or not believe. We have a choice to follow the truth or walk the other way. As the time of probation draws to a close, is there truth you have rejected? Are there things that God has shown you that you don’t want to accept? Is your heart slowly hardening so that you believe a lie?

Some of the ten plagues in Egypt are similar to the seven plagues found in the book of Revelation. Let’s take a look:

Plagues in Exodus

Plagues in Revelation

1. Water turned to blood

1. Painful sores

2. Frogs cover the land

2. Sea turns to blood

3. Gnats infest people and animals

3. Rivers and springs turn to blood

4. Swarms of flies

4. Scorching sun

5. Livestock die

5. Darkness

6. Boils on people and animals

6. Euphrates dries up

7. Hail mixed with fire

7. Lightning, earthquakes, islands flee, 100-lb hailstones

8. Locusts devour crops

—

9. Darkness covers Egypt

—

10. Death of the firstborn

—

The suffering for the Egyptians must have been exceedingly great. How Pharaoh could be so calloused – I just can’t even imagine. It seems like with the first plague would have scared anyone enough to make them believe in the true God of Heaven. Even the pots of water turned to blood!

On the other hand, Pharaoh’s magicians were able to perform some of the same tricks. This is import because the devil still wants to confuse people today. We must always remember that the only truth we can believe is the Word of God – even our eyes can deceive us.

“But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.” Exodus 7:22

The Bible tells us that in the last days that Satan will perform all kinds of signs and wonders making it difficult for those who do not have a sound knowledge of the Word to decipher the lies from the truth.

“They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.” Revelation 16:14

“For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Matthew 24:24

You see, we will have to know the difference. We won’t be able to trust our eyes! The Beast in Revelation will shock our senses. The whole world will wonder after the Beast.

“… and all the world wondered after the beast.” Revelation13:3

“And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men.” Revelation 13:13

Except for the remnant who remain faithful to God’s Word. Those who have studied and know what is coming, who know what to trust and what to reject. We won’t be able to trust our eyes, our emotions, our five senses. In the last days we will only have God’s Word to depend upon completely.

“A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: ‘If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise forever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.’ This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.” Revelation 14:9-12

Although they were persecuted by Pharaoh, God’s people in Egypt, in the land of Goshen, were protected from all the sorrow and suffering that struck the Egyptian people during the plagues.

I have given this serious thought over the years. I have prayed about it many times. I think about my children. I don’t want them to suffer. But I do want them to trust their Father in Heaven even in the face of death.

If faced with a horrible choice – choose Jesus. Even if it means losing this life. Because as Jesus said, “…he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.”

So many Christians believe that we won’t be here for the time of trouble, but nowhere in Scripture is this belief found! Just as the Israelites lived through the plagues and but were protected from them, so will those Christians who are alive when the plagues of Revelation take place. Just as God delivered the His people out of Egypt, so will He deliver His people from this world.

This morning as we walked into church I was inspired to write a series of articles on how Exodus is an example or parallel to the end times – how God protects His people and will one day soon deliver us home to the Promised Land.

I have always loved the book of Exodus and there’s no doubt that we are living in the last days.

The stories recorded in the Bible are more than history; they are patterns, shadows, and reminders of God’s power to save. When we look at Moses, Pharaoh, the plagues, the Passover, the wilderness, and the Ten Commandments, we see pictures of Jesus, of redemption, and of God’s last-day people. This is truly a fascinating study!

Years ago I wrote a program for children called Out of Egypt. I’ve written several programs and I rotate teaching them to the primary kids each year at our annual church campmeeting. Out of Egypt was the first children’s program I wrote – way back in 2006. It’s still one of my favorite programs to teach!

Exodus is a beautiful story of God calling His people out of bondage so that they could be free! And if you think about it, Revelation is very similar: God calling His people to come out of Babylon – “Come out of her my people” (Revelation 18:4) – and imploring them to separate from sin, false worship, and the systems of this world so that they might be sealed, protected, and ready for His coming kingdom.

Just as Israel was called out of Egypt to serve the living God, so His end-time people are called to leave behind spiritual Egypt and Babylon to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Both stories remind us that God doesn’t abandon His people in times of trial; He delivers them with a mighty hand and leads them safely toward the Promised Land.

Exodus: Parallels for the End Times

Exodus is the story of God’s people being called out of bondage to walk toward freedom. Revelation tells the same story on a larger scale—God calling His people out of spiritual Egypt to prepare them for the heavenly Canaan. Just as God led Israel with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night, He promises to guide and protect His children in the closing events of earth’s history.

That’s why I want to explore this book more deeply with you. Each post in this series will look at a different aspect of Exodus and how it points us forward to Christ and His soon return. My prayer is that as we study these stories together, our hearts will be encouraged and our faith in God’s promises will grow stronger.

Part 1 – Moses and Christ

The story of Exodus isn’t just about the past. It’s a prophecy in story form—a pattern of how God saves His people. When we look at Moses, we don’t just see a great leader; we see a shadow of Jesus, the true Deliverer. And when we look at Israel’s deliverance, we see a glimpse of what God will do for His people in the last days.

Parallels Between Moses and Jesus

Saved from Infancy Slaughter

Pharaoh tried to kill Moses when he was a baby (Exodus 1:22). King Herod tried to kill Jesus when He was a baby (Matthew 2:16).

Both lives were preserved by God’s hand, showing that Satan has always tried to destroy the Deliverer before His mission could begin.

Rescued in Egypt

Moses was saved by Pharaoh’s daughter (Exodus 2:3–4). Jesus was taken to Egypt to be saved (Matthew 2:13–15).

Egypt becomes both a place of refuge and a place of bondage in Scripture—a symbol of how God can use even unlikely circumstances to fulfill His plan.

From Prince to Pauper

Moses was a prince who became a pauper (Exodus 2:15–19). Jesus was the King of Heaven who became man (John 1:1–3; Mark 6:3; Philippians 2:7).

Both humbled themselves completely in order to serve and save God’s people.

Shepherd of the Flock

Moses was a shepherd (Exodus 3:1). Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11).

Before either could lead God’s people, they first cared for a flock. God trains leaders in small, humble ways before entrusting them with greater responsibility.

Redeemer of God’s People

Moses was chosen to redeem Israel. Jesus came to redeem all mankind.

One brought physical deliverance from slavery; the other brings spiritual deliverance from sin.

Rejected by His Own

Moses was rejected by his people (Exodus 2:14; Acts 7:25). Jesus was rejected by His people (John 1:11).

God’s chosen deliverers are often misunderstood, resisted, or despised before their mission is recognized.

Fasting in the Wilderness

Moses fasted 40 days on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:18; 34:28). Jesus fasted 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:2).

Both faced seasons of preparation, testing, and dependence on God before carrying out their mission.

Intercessor

Moses interceded for Israel after they sinned with the golden calf (Exodus 32:33–34). Jesus offered His life for us (Isaiah 53; Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Colossians 1:20; 1 John 2:2).

Both stood between God and sinful people, willing to give their lives for the salvation of others.

The Song of Deliverance

Exodus: Israel sings the Song of Moses after crossing the Red Sea (Ex. 15:1–18).

Revelation: The redeemed sing the Song of Moses and the Lamb on the sea of glass (Rev. 15:2–3).

Why This Matters for Us

These parallels show us that the Exodus story points to something bigger. Just as God delivered His people out of Egypt, He delivers us out of sin. And just as Pharaoh hardened his heart, Revelation tells us that many will harden their hearts against God in the last days (Revelation 16:9, 11).

The Promised Land for Israel was Canaan. For us, it is the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:1–3). God calls us to trust Him and follow the true Deliverer, Jesus, even when the wilderness journey feels long and hard.

The life of Moses gives us one of the clearest pictures of Jesus in the Old Testament. From their miraculous births and humble service to their roles as shepherds, redeemers, and intercessors, the parallels remind us that God’s plan of salvation was revealed long before Christ walked the earth. Just as Moses led God’s people out of bondage in Egypt, Jesus leads us out of the bondage of sin and prepares us for the Promised Land.

These lessons are more than history—they are for us today. The Exodus story reassures us that God has always had a Deliverer, and He always makes a way of escape for His people.

In this article, we’ve looked at the personal parallels between Moses and Jesus. But the book of Exodus also holds broader end-time lessons that connect directly to the prophecies of Revelation—parallels about God’s presence, true and false worship, the plagues, deliverance, and the hope of the Promised Land. We’ll explore those in the next article in this series.

There are probably other parallels that I have not listed. Which ones do you see? Let me know!

I believe this will be an exciting and thought provoking study. I hope you will join me next week!

Prayer is a vital part of our relationship with God, and there are many different ways to pray effectively. One powerful way to connect with God is by praying Scripture back to Him. In fact the Bible tells us:

“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

That’s such a powerful promise from God!

Praying Scripture back to God involves reading or saying a verse aloud and then praying about it in your own words. As you do this, you allow God to speak to you through His Word, and you can see how it applies to your life. Be open to what He has for you, and let Him show you how powerful his Word can be in your life!

What is prayer and why do we do it?

Prayer is a form of communication with our Father in Heaven. Prayer can be a helpful way to express gratitude, seek guidance, or simply ask for help.

When you pray regularly, you’ll find that prayer helps you to feel more connected to God.

Prayer can be done alone or with others, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. Some people prefer to pray silently, while others enjoy praying out loud.

Ultimately, the important thing is that you find a method of prayer that works for you and that you feel comfortable with.

Reasons to Pray Scripture Back to God

The Bible is full of promises from God. He tells us that if we seek Him, we will find Him. He promises to be with us always, even to the end of the age.

He assures us that His love for us is never-ending and that His faithfulness towards us is great. When we are feeling lost, confused, or struggling, it can be helpful to pray Scripture back to God. By doing so, we are reminding Him of His promises and declaring our faith in Him.

Additionally, praying Scripture back to God can help increase our own understanding of His Word and what He is trying to tell us. As we spend time meditating on the promises of God, we can find comfort and hope in His Word.

Prayer is an important part of the Christian faith, but it can also be a powerful tool for personal growth and spiritual warfare. When we pray, we are not only talking to God, but we are also aligning our thoughts and hearts with His will.

As we do so, He promises to work in us and transform us into His image. (2 Corinthians 3:18).

In addition, prayer is one of the most effective ways to fight against the enemy’s attacks.

When we pray Scripture back to God, we are declaring His truth over our lives and declaring war on the lies of the enemy. So don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel like you’re “doing it right.” Just start praying, and let God work in your life!

Some Scriptures to Pray Back to God:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (Peter. 5:7)

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” (Psalm 23:1)

“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord. (Isaiah 54:17)

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:9)

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18)

How to Pray Scripture Back to God

When you pray, you often talk to God about your own needs and concerns. But did you know that you can also pray scripture back to God? This is a powerful way to connect with God and declare His truth over your life.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Choose a scripture verse that resonates with you. It could be a verse that speaks to your current situation or one that is a personal favorite.

Meditate on the verse for a few minutes. What is God saying to you through this verse? How does it apply to your life?

As you reflect on the verse, ask God to help you understand it fully and to apply it to your life in a way that will be pleasing to him. As you meditate on the scripture and pray it back to God, you will be amazed at how he speaks to you through his Word and how he uses it to transform your life.

2. Read or say the verse to God. This is a good way to begin your prayer time, especially if you are feeling lost or confused.

Tell God about what you are struggling with and ask Him to help you through it. Be open and honest with Him, and let Him know what you need.

As you pray, declare the truth of the scripture over your life. Remind God of His promises and thank Him for His faithfulness towards you. When praying scripture back to God, it’s important to remember that it’s not about “doing it right.” Just start praying, and let God work in your life!

3. You can also rephrase the verse using your own words. This can be a helpful way to really personalize the scripture and make it your own.

For example, here’s a verse that I often pray: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

I might pray this verse by saying something like this: “Lord, I am so tired and overwhelmed. Please come to me and give me rest. Thank you for your promises of peace and restoration.”

Or, I might change it up a bit depending on my current situation: “Lord, I need Your help right now. Come to me and give me the strength I need to face this challenge. Thank You for Your faithfulness.

4. Talk to God about what the verse means to you. Share your thoughts and feelings with Him. Thank Him for the truths in the scripture and ask Him to help you apply them to your life.

When you pray scripture back to God, you are opening yourself up to His guidance and wisdom. You are allowing Him to speak directly to your heart and mind, and this is a beautiful way of growing closer to Him. Be open to what He has for you, and let Him show you how powerful his Word can be in your life!

Scripture prayer is a powerful way to communicate with our Heavenly Father. It’s also a great way to get to know Him better and grow in our own personal relationship with Him. I hope you enjoyed this post and will be encouraged to start praying Scripture today!

Actions Steps to Take Today

Choose a Scripture that is meaningful to you right now and relevant to something you are dealing with.

Meditate on the meaning of the words and memorize them if you haven’t already.

Origianlly published February 4, 2011. Updated September 24, 2024.

The Book of Revelation

Lucifer held a position of great respect and trust as a covering cherub on the throne of God. What caused Lucifer to fall? Ezekiel 28: 17 says, “Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth…” NIV.

Lucifer began to think highly of himself. He became proud in his heart and he was no longer satisfied with his life. He began to believe that He should be worshiped like God.

“How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” Isaiah 14: 12-14 NIV.

Satan desired worship. Satan’s fall reminds me of another verse, “Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before the fall.” Proverbs 16:18.

Satan was cast out of heaven because he wanted to be “like the Most High.” He must have been angry! I am sure he is still. He desires worship more than anything and he knows that if he can deceive God’s people and distract God’s people he can steal the worship away from God.

Satan doesn’t have to work very hard to deceive those who are already “following” him. Remember, Jesus said, we cannot serve two masters.

In fact, most people do a pretty good job of sinning all on their own. However, when it comes to those who are faithfully serving Christ, Satan is angry.

He is angry with the “remnant” of people who do God’s will. (Revelation 12: 12,17) He is roaming the earth like a roaring lion ready to attack! (1 Peter 5:8)

The Father of Lies

Satan is the father of lies. (John 8:44) He knows that if he can just deceive God’s people enough that in the end, they will be lost. Jesus said that on the judgment day there will be people who think they are saved until Jesus tells them otherwise.

Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evil doers!’” Matthew 7:21-23 NIV.

Jesus’ words tell me that there are people who are in church every week – maybe even pastors and ministers – who “seem” to be doing all the right things, but who have been clearly deceived. They will be lost because they failed to do the will of the God.

Satan uses all sorts of tactics against God’s people.

He persecutes God’s people ….. Revelation 12: 13

He deceives …… Revelation 12: 9

He accuses the brethren ….. Revelation 12:10

He puts God’s people in prison ….. Revelation 2:10

He martyrs God’s people ….. Revelation 12: 13

In order to not be deceived, Jesus has given us His Word. It is more important than ever, in these last days, that we know what our Bible says! Satan knows that if he came out looking like the boogie man, no one would fall for his lies. Instead, he appears as an angel of light and his angels appear as ministers of righteousness! We must be alert, ready for whatever comes our way in order not to be deceived!

“For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles for Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11: 13, 14

Satan is working to deceive God’s people – people who think they are serving God. Satan wants our worship. He wants to steal worship away from God! What better way to deceive Christians than under the guise of Christianity?

Remember what Jesus said, “He who is not with me is against me.” Matthew 12:30

There are many means by which Satan works to deceive including the working of miracles. “The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs, and wonders…” 2 Thessalonians 2:9 NIV.

These miracles and wonders will be so effective that even God’s chosen people will be at risk for believing them! “For false christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect – if that were possible.” Matthew 24:24 NIV. The “elect” are God’s people!

Satan will not only work signs and miracles to deceive God’s people. He is a crafty character. He will do whatever it takes to make us think we are on the right track when really we are headed down the wrong road. And he is not beyond using Scripture to deceive Christians.

Satan is not beyond using Scripture to deceive Christians – he’ll do whatever it takes!

If Satan quoted Scripture to Jesus when tempting Him (Matthew 4:1,5,6), would he not also misuse Scripture in an effort to deceive God’s people?

Satan will go to any lengths. He knows he is fighting a losing battle, but don’t think that he doesn’t know the Scriptures. His goal is to take as many Christian out with him. One of his favorite ways to mislead the people of God is by twisting Scripture and teaching false doctrines.

Revelation tells us that Satan is enraged at God’s church and those who do the will of their Father in Heaven. “Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring – those who obey God’s commandments and hold the testimony of Jesus.” Revelation 12:17 NIV.

So, how can we be sure that we are not deceived? Isaiah 8:20 says, “To the law and the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light in them.” NIV.

In other words, if something does not match up with what the Word of God says, it has no light – no truth. This is why we need to be like the Bereans – searching the Scriptures daily! (Acts 17:11)

The Bible says that the Bereans were more noble than the Thessalonians because they searched the Bible to see if everything that Paul, their preacher, said was true. They didn’t take his word for it. They learned for themselves.

Not only do we need to test all things against Scripture, but we must have a love for truth. We must be open to whatever God’s Word reveals to us so that we are not in danger of believing a lie. We must desire truth more than anything. “They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 NIV.

Satan is fighting a losing battle. He will be thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone (Revelation 20:10.) Until the day Jesus returns to take us home to heave, we are fighting a battle of our own. Thankfully, God is on our side! He wants the victory in our lives! We can overcome!

“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” Revelation 12:11
