The system allows registering and maintenance of complete information (electronic passports) on every bovine animal, including information about animal owners, meat-processing enterprises and other parties involved in the process of production and sales of livestock products. The system is also used for veterinary control and for tracing of information about animals and products of animal origin.

Global wood production grows for the fourth year. While the production of industrial roundwood, sawnwood, wood pellets and wood-based panels have fully recovered from the economic downturn in 2008-2009, global production of pulp and paper stagnated in 2012-13 largely due to a decline in consumption in China, where electronic publishing is increasingly being used instead of traditional printing processes.

2014 seen as record year for world cereal production. 11 December 2014, Rome - Latest indications confirm that world cereal production will reach an all-time record of more than 2.5 billion tonnes in 2014. Buoyed by bumper crops in Europe and a record maize output in the United States of America, this year's cereal output should reach 2.532 billion tonnes, including rice in milled terms, or 0.3% higher than 2013, according to FAO's latest Crop Prospects and Food Situation Report. The EU Rural Review. Issue 18 - Organic Farming - May 2014

The EU Rural Review is a thematic magazine, with topics and insights relevant to all ENRD stakeholders. It addresses the most up-to-date topics in EU rural development policy and provides with plenty of useful examples on how it is being implemented across the whole EU .The magazine is available in six languages (DE, EN, ES, FR, IT, PL) and both in print and PDF format.

FAO publishes first global study of forest genetic resources.

Action needed to safeguard genetic diversity of the world's forests. According to the first-ever edition of The State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources report, half of the forest species reported as regularly utilized by countries are threatened by the conversion of forests to pastures and farmland, overexploitation, and the impacts of climate change.

The State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources - prepared under the guidance of FAO's intergovernmental Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - calls for urgent action to better manage forests and their genetic resources to sure that rural people who depend on them for their nutrition, livelihoods and resilience will be able to rely on their benefits over the long term.

Through the FAO Global Plan of Action for Forest Genetic Resources, countries have committed themselves to improve the dissemination of, and access to, information on forest genetic resources, as well as to enhance collaboration to combat invasive species affecting forest genetic resources. Developing and reinforcing national seed programmes to ensure the availability of genetically-appropriate tree seeds is also vital.

And forest genetic resource conservation and management should be integrated into wider policies and programmes at the national, regional and global levels, the report says.

Promotion of earthworms for soil fertility – new technical guide.

Earthworms play a key role in conserving soil fertility and are excellent indicators in agricultural soils. A new technical guide gives an overview of the multiple services of earthworms to farmers and provides recommendations for the promotion of these extraordinary creatures in agricultural soils, called also ecological engineers. The guide was compiled as product in the EU-TILMAN-ORG-project “Reduced tillage and green manures for sustainable organic cropping systems”. The overall goals of this project are to design improved organic cropping systems with enhanced productivity and nutrient use efficiency, more efficient weed management and increased biodiversity, but lower carbon footprints.
