It’s funny how life comes in full circles when you least expect. On November 6, 2011 I was in State College, PA covering the Big 10 Women’s Field Hockey Championship. After the game I made the 355 mile drive home later that evening. Three days later on November 9th, I got a phone call from my editor asking if I could make the 355 mile track back to State College to cover the giant scandal of child abuse that is unraveling in Happy Valley. Due to a prior commitment I wasn’t able to make the drive back. A few weeks passed and everything seem to have quieted down.
On November 18th Jay Paterno the son of Joe released that Joe has been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Jan 13th Joe was hospitalized for observations and minor complications from lung cancer.

Fast forwarding to last night. January 21 at 9pm. I got a text from my boss, while I was out to dinner with my girlfriend to get ready to head to Penn State as soon as possible. I quickly got home packed my bags and made the 5 1/2 hour drive to Penn State. I got there at about 2:30 am where people were still gathered around the Joe Paterno Statue saying prayers and leaving cards and flowers.

The next 5 days turned into one of the hardest and emotional thing I have covered.
