What are phthalates?

As of lately, a lot of people have been asking us about phthalates (said thal-ates). It seems everywhere, you see "phthalate-free" or "contains no phthalates". We know they're obviously bad, but what are they?

In short, phthalates are used as a plasticizer in many products, although they are being used less and less in the last few years ever since their alleged health concerns have been discovered. For those that are not sure what a plasticizer is, it is something that is added to plastic material in different amounts to make it more stretchy and pliable.

Although there are some studies that cast doubt upon the fears of harm caused by phthalates, a majority of companies are starting to phase them out of use in production to ease weary consumers. Many toy manufacturers are following suit in this crusade as well.

So the bottom line is this. There are more and more toy manufacturers out there that are discontinuing use of phthalates in the production process. Whether phthalates actually pose a significant threat in such small quantities is still up for debate, so using your own judgement when purchasing anything is the best bet.

What does it mean when a man says no to sex?

This was one of the top voted for questions to answer. So, what does it mean when a man says no to sex?

If I'm not mistaken, that question is asking why men in particular men, not women say no. Well, just because someone also carries the Y chromosome in their jeans doesn't mean that they want someone else up in their jeans all the time. (Sorry for that pun, it won't happen again)

Let's simplify this question. What does it mean when anyone says no to sex? Quite simple actually. It means no. There could be any number of reasons why this might happen, though, so don't worry just yet.

Porn and sex culture has conditioned our society to believe that anyone and everyone is ready for action at any given time at the drop of a hat. This simply isn't true. Although porn is great and can be very exciting for many people, it is a fantasy and it usually remains that for many.

Sex is something that should come naturally for both people and can't be rushed or forced (unless you're into that). There are a few different reasons that may cause someone to say no. As I always suggest, communication is the best way to find out why, but here are a few possible suggestions.

● They just aren't in the mood. Once in a while people feel in a more romantic mood as opposed to raw sexuality.

● They may not be feeling well. Some people really do get headaches!

● They may be in a bad mood... this one could be fun to solve though. A little playful flirting can sometimes remedy this situation so have fun with it!

● And the last one that nobody wants to think about... it MIGHT be a sign of cheating. Let me make this clear though. This isn't as common of a reason as many people think. A large majority jump to conclusions before finding out. Just by assuming things can sometimes be enough to plant the seed that tears people apart, so be careful with this one.

The simple answer to this question is this. If you're unsure of why someone would say no to sex, just ask. You'd be surprised how often you get an answer and I promise, it's not always a bad one!

Bringing Up Sex Toys with a Partner

Question: "What is the best way to introduce your partner to using sex toys in the bedroom?"

Although sex toys are becoming less and less taboo the more our society is sexualized, some people still aren't fully comfortable using them. Even having their partner use them or even talking about them is tough. Each person has their own views on the subject and that's fine. However, if you're in a relationship and enjoy the many benefits of adding sex toys to your love routine, there are a few things to think about while asking your partner to consider them.

As I said before, some people just aren't open to the thought and may have made that entirely clear to you in the past. Aside from subtly bringing it up from time to time, there really isn't anything that you can do about that. Although they might not want to use them though, you may really enjoy toys. So what do you do?

A common misconception about sex toys is that they act as replacement for a partner. In some cases this is true but in most it's not. If toys are being used as a replacement, then there are deeper problems to address than I am going to touch on here. For the rest of the time, toys can act as a catalyst to more intense sexual energy that you can direct towards the other person.

Think about it this way. If you use a toy on your own, you'll be able to really find out what you like and don't like, and how to get you "there". By bringing that toy into the mix the next time you and your partner are going at it, you now have this knowledge of how to really get your rocks off. Seeing you squirm with pleasure will more than likely bring you and your partner closer together knowing they helped you do get off with such intensity.

Now, what about the people that just really aren’t that into toys? You know the ones… they won't actually say they don't like them, but you can see through it and tell that they're insulted for you even talking about it. Let me first say, I'm no psychiatrist, so these are just my own thoughts on the matter, but this is how I would deal with it.

My idea would be to suggest actually taking them into an adult store. Not necessarily with the intent of buying anything, but just to have them see what's offered. Pick a Saturday afternoon when you're both relaxed and running errands. Casually drive by a store and bring up the subject of going in. "Hey, want to go in? That would be fun." The hardest part will be getting them into the store. If they say no, don’t push it. Try again some other time. A lot of people seem to think that all sex toys are raunchy, throbbing, vein-covered, gyrating, 'do-hickeys' with lights all over them. Show them that's not true, (and hide them from the fact that these do exist for the more adventurous ones!) Pick a store that is nicely set up and staffed by welcoming and approachable associates, (might I suggest Aren't We Naughty?). Once you're in, the hard part is over! Although not visibly, they are most likely at least now entertaining the idea of toys and in an open mind-set. Feel free to just look around on your own. Although you may have some knowledge on the subject, for some people it might help to hear about the selection from someone else. If you’re curious and really feel lost, speak to one of the associates, say you're new to the subject and you want a few suggestions. These people are here to help! You should never feel looked down upon or feel any type of negativity from anyone in the store. You can put money down that everyone in there is there for the same reason, so feel relaxed in knowing that.

A good place to start looking around would be the lingerie section. It’s an excellent gateway into a whole new world of fun. For some people, sexy clothing is enough and they leave the rest to each other which is completely fine. For others, it’s a mixture of clothing and toys, and for the rest, it’s just toys. Any of these choices are completely acceptable and normal. The next step is up to you. You’re in the store, the hard part is over. Have fun with your partner in this environment! There is honestly something for everyone; from lubes, a selection of condoms, to party favours, chocolate, books, figures, videos, and of course toys.

As a sexuality counselor and author, I’m often asked, “What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever dealt with?”
I wish I could tell them something really juicy, like naked clowns wrestling in Jell-O, for example, but the truth is that most sexual complaints tend to be rather common: sex ruts, mismatched libidos, erectile disorder and premature ejaculation in men, and orgasm problems and painful sex for women.
What people really want to know about are the unusual sexual fetishes of others (also known clinically as paraphilias), which affect a much smaller percentage of people.

Interestingly enough, most of those people happen to be men. That’s not to say that women lack their own unique turn-ons and turn-offs, their kinks and squicks (sexual repulsions), but when it comes to, say, having a favorite fantasy versus having an obsession in which all sexual pleasure is almost exclusively derived from a single object, body part or sex practice, more men seem to fall in the latter category.
In their compelling new book "A Billion Wicked Thoughts," (also discussed in thisblog) neuroscientists Ogi Ogas, Ph.D. and Sai Gaddam, Ph.D., analyzed more than a billion Internet searches in order to learn about the differences between male and female sexual preferences, as well as what those differences tell us about how our brains are wired, and why, for example, men are more predisposed to have fetishes:
“The male sexual software is what a computer engineer would call an 'OR gate.' It is instantly aroused by any single cue. The male brain is turned on by deep décolletage or sashaying hips or the whisper of a sultry voice or two Applebee’s waitresses kissing. The female sexual brain is what a computer engineer would call an 'AND gate.' It requires input from multiple cues simultaneously to surpass a combined threshold of activation before arousal occurs. … Though for most men the OR gate can be triggered by any one of a variety of sexual cues, for some men one specific cue is essential. This necessary cue is a fetish.”
Although fetishes have been well-documented since the mid-19th century, and could easily fill an encyclopedia with thousands, if not tens of thousands, of entries (from agalmatophilia to zoophilia), the underlying mechanics of fetishes remain something of a mystery.
And while the American Psychiatry Association recognizes fetishes in its clinical bible, the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders," there’s much professional dissent about how to treat fetishes and whether treatment can even be effective when a fetish is deeply ingrained in a person.
Freud believed (no surprise) that fetishes stem from issues such as a man’s universal fear of castration or his unconscious fear of his mother’s genitals, while many psychologists continue to believe that some sort of “sexual imprinting” must occur in the early childhood of the fetishist for sexual excitement and the fetish object to become so intricately enmeshed.
Today, fetishes are often treated with a combination of psychoanalysis (the search for deep unconscious meaning behind a fetish), cognitive behavior therapy (in which the fetishist’s thoughts are viewed as irrational ones that can be reversed with conscious mindfulness) and/or psychiatry, which seeks to alter the brain chemistry of the fetishist through drugs.
Even in our own expert-forum at Good in Bed, fetishes are a source of speculation. Recently, for example, a young woman complained of her boyfriend’s “freeze fetish” - his sexual propensity for immobility, statues and wax figures.
While her boyfriend didn’t seem to be exclusively turned on by the fetish, she nonetheless was confused and anxious. Our experts weighed in: “Fetishes don’t usually go away, but they can morph a little,” writes Dr. Madeleine Castellanos, author of "A Woman’s Guide to Men and Their Penis Problems."
“If people are disturbed by them, they could explore what the unconscious interpretation of the fetish is for them. Then they can experiment with another representation of that meaning that they can then assign erotic feelings.”
“The best way to treat fetishes is to identify the nonsexual meanings of the fetish and crack the erotic code by identifying what he is looking for unconsciously through the fetish,” adds psychotherapist Dr. Joe Kort. “Perhaps he was afraid of mannequins in retail stores or impressed with them or aroused by them as a child and now they have become part of this arousal template, or maybe he saw a movie or video about this as a child which caused it to become locked into his mind and now is eroticized. Whatever the case it could be helpful to understand the origins for both of you.”
Luckily, many people who would normally be distressed by a fetish are now finding like-minded peers via the Internet and/or some form of erotic stimulation (such as specialty porn) that caters to their specific interests.
Or they are fortunate enough to have sexual partners who, in the words of columnist Dan Savage, are sexually GGG (“good, giving and game”) and are willing to stretch their definition of the taboo and incorporate their partner’s fetish into their sex-play.
One single woman I know even joked that she’d love to meet a foot fetishist: At this point in her life, a good foot massage sounded better than sex. Perhaps the greatest goal for couples dealing with a partner who has a fetish is to decide how that fetish fits into their relationship.
“If a man is able to have healthy and hot sex with his partner and have his fetish fantasies without her and enjoy them,” asks Kort, "What’s wrong with that?”

Men with same-size index and ring fingers more likely to have long penis

Men: Hold up your right hand. Are your index and ring fingers close to the same size? Congratulations, you're more likely than men with mismatched digits to have a long penis.

A smaller ratio between the second and fourth fingers is linked to a longer stretched penis size, researchers report today (July 4) in the Asian Journal of Andrology. The findings go beyond providing a new finger ratio-based pick-up line for men in bars, however; researchers say that a quick look at a man's fingers could reveal his exposure to male hormones in the womb, providing a hint about his risk for hormone-driven diseases like prostate cancer.

The idea that men's finger ratio and hormone exposure are linked is not a new one. Studies have found that the ratio between the second and fourth finger is related to sperm count, likelihood of heart attack, hand preference, facial masculinity and more. One small 2002 study published in the journal Urology found a correlation between the length of the index finger and genital size in healthy men under 40, suggesting that testosterone exposure in the womb affects the growth of both.

Stretched penis length

In the new study, researchers at Gachon University Gil Hospital in South Korea recruited 144 volunteers 20 years of age and older who were going to undergo urological surgery. While the men were under anesthesia, the researchers measured their finger lengths and both their flaccid and stretched penis lengths. Stretched penis length is statistically correlated to the size of the penis when fully erect.

The average flaccid penis length, the researchers found, was 3.0 inches (7.7 centimeters), with a range of 1.6 to 4.7 in. (4 to 12 cm). Stretched lengths ranged from nearly 3.0 to 6.7 in. (7.5 to 17 cm), with an average of 4.6 in. (11.7 cm).

The average ratio between the two fingers was 0.38 in. (0.97 cm), with a range of 0.35 to 0.44 in. (0.88 to 1.12 cm), making the differences hard to make out with the unaided eye. But the lower the digit ratio, the study found, the longer the penis was likely to be.

Testosterone in the womb

The prenatal hormone exposures and genetic processes that link fingers to penises are still unknown, the researchers wrote, though testosterone in the womb seems to play a role. If the findings hold, wrote Skidmore College biologist Denise Brooks McQuade in an editorial accompanying the study, digit ratio could provide an at-a-glance measure for doctors to gauge how much testosterone their patients were exposed to in the womb.

That makes digit-ratio measurement far more than a fancy bar trick, wrote McQuade, who was not involved in the research.

"Hotness' aside, the value of digit ratio research for the biomedical scientist or clinician may come from the predictive abilities and risk-assessment qualities of the measurement for clinical conditions," she wrote.

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of blog postings lately, but we’re back!

Today, Friday June 24^th, marks the start of Pride Week which is one of Toronto’s biggest yearly events. Pride Week relies on acceptance and participation, so it would be beneficial for more people to know why it’s held and how it began. After all, you don’t have to belong to the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) community to support the festivities!

Back in 1981, Toronto’s gay bathhouses were raided by police. In the aftermath of this crackdown, a mass protest started which opposed the decision made by the government to persecute the people of a specific sexual orientation. Regrettably, this was one of the largest mass arrests made in Canadian history. With much celebration, we have come a long way as a country since those times, and the LGBT community is much more accepted than ever before thanks to the dedication of many hard working people for the cause.

Now happening every summer for more than 30 years, the protest that started it all has evolved into a peaceful and fun time when people of the LGBT community can come together and celebrate the accomplishments that have been achieved. It’s a great time to get out and see the city, experience the essence that it offers and have a blast!

Female Viagra...A cure or another problem?

In all honesty, my dad brought this conversation up on the phone this past weekend.

"Have you heard about this female version of Viagra?" (see CNN article) I instantly got angry. Not at my dad of course, at the idea that we need a pill to feel like having sex. Please let me point out I said "feel" like having sex, not help us have sex, like the male Viagra does. ED (erectile dysfunction) is a horrible problem men go through that makes it difficult or sometimes completely impossible for men to achieve an erection, and they really want to. Viagra helps the blood flow properly so they may hopefully get that chance to have sex with their partner. For women, its a whole other story.

Before I continue, I may offend some people, but I'm not trying to. Let me point out I am not a feminist, but I am very liberal. I also love men very much, have a very loving husband and think we are all equal...for the most part *giggle*.

To be a man in any era of history would be amazing. From what I have seen with my brother, dad, husband and the men I have worked with, you are very focused, single-tasked individuals. When you are hungry, you go eat. When you are working, you put everything into your task. At war, you fight, at love, you love, at fighting with your spouse, you are quiet and when you are interrupted in any of these things you are not very happy with that person.

Being a woman is not like that at all. We are multi-taskers. We think about everything in our life at every moment, even when we are just breathing: breathe in (laundry, dinner, bills), breathe out (gym, doctors appointment, clean floors), breathe in (lunch date, presentation, husbands dentist appointment), breathe out (dinner at 6, meet with the girls at 8, movies at 10). You get the picture.

There is something called Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (funny, they used to call it frigidity). "The condition should be distinguished from other sexual dysfunctions, such as the orgasmic disorder (anorgasmia), and from general loss of interest in sexual activity. Although female sexual dysfunction is currently a contested diagnostic, pharmaceutical companies are beginning to promote products to treat FSD, often involving low doses of testosterone." It also has been attributed to the following reasons: childhood sexual abuse, poor self esteem, bad relationships and a large gapped estimation of 30%-80% of female sexual dysfunction they say can be given over to physical problems, mostly in circulatory or neurological function...but that was in 1988.

Recent research, and open minds, are realizing that the issue lies more with psychological issues instead...Health Discovery has a good list along with the relationship with their partner for not feeling like having sex: "family concerns, illness or death, financial or job worries, childcare responsibilities, managing a career and children, previous or current physical and emotional abuse, fatigue and depression." Yep, just your standard day in the life of a woman.

Mind you, a lot of medications for stress and depression will kill the mood in us, as well as a myriad of other medications for physical ailments (consult your physicians of course).

So, when the clothes and dishes are done, the kids are fed and in bed, bills are paid, dog is walked and all is at peace in the world, we women might just finally feel like making love.

I have mentioned that I receive industry news and I read something yesterday that I knew I should share. It is off of XBiz.com, a study that have had my co-workers and I talking. I will let you take a gander and I will sign off with a few thoughts.

Study: Lubricants May Raise Infection Risk During Anal Sex

PITTSBURGH — A new report suggests that using lubricants during unprotected anal sex may raise the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV.

Researchers at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine conducted two new studies, focusing on the fact that HIV infection risk rises if other infections are already present in the rectal lining of the receptive partner, the researchers said.

The first two-year study, based on approximately 900 people, observed that men and women who use lubricants in general are three times more likely to have some form of a rectal sexually transmitted infection.

Most participants, 76 percent, said they used a water-based lubricant, while 28 percent used silicon-based products, 17 percent used oil-based lubricants and six percent used a numbing lubricant.

The second study was conducted by reproductive specialist Charlene Dezzutti at the University of Pittsburg. Her team, including collaborators from International Rectal Microbicides Advocates, studied the effects of six most popular lubricants on rectal cells and tissues.

They found that some of the lubricants had a toxic effect on cells and rectal tissue. Researchers found high concentrations of dissolved salts and sugars that draw water out of cells, weakening and even killing the cells. Some of the lubricants even stripped away the layer of cells that serve as a protective barrier.

PRE and Wet Platinum were found to be the safest lubricants in terms of toxicity, while Astroglide and KY Jelly appeared to be the most problematic. ID Glide and Elbow Grease had intermediate effects, the team found. None of the lubricants was found to have measurable anti-HIV activity.

Lubricant safety advocates say conclusions can’t be made based on these small studies.
"Further research is absolutely necessary to understand the potential role of sexual lubricants in HIV transmission,” said Marc-Andre LeBlanc of IRMA. “We should be able to provide consumer guidance regarding lubes that are found to be safer than others."

"We must ensure that existing lubes don't facilitate HIV transmission," IRMA chair Jim Pickett said. "People have a right to this kind of information, and it's very past due."

According to IRMA, statistics suggest that as many as 90 percent of gay men practice anal sex and 35 percent of women have participated in anal sex at least once. The majority of sexes are thought to use lubricants more often than condoms.

I just wanted to add that organisms, such as STD's, love to travel in fluids, either the bodies natural lubricant or added synthetic lubricant, so anyone not in a commited, long-term relationship should always use condoms. Although this article focused on anal sex and I am in the middle of my anal sex mini series, it is always important to be safe with anal or vaginal sex.

Getting Down With Anal Sex, Part 2

I have been talking to people about this particular blog and it has perked some attention. First off, most people know where I work, but the mention of anything ana still gets looks. Some positive, some negative, all interesting to me. I love watching how people react, I am not one for shock tactics at all, but I do love to help people open up their minds to new ideas.

To recap, in the first blog I discussed the anatomy of the anal area and proper hygiene and safety with anal play. I also gave the golden rule with anal play: Always remember: Vagina to Anus NEVER Anus to Vagina. If you have anal play, clean up then you can go back to vaginal play.

Section 3: Talking to Your Partner
Maybe you're the person wanting to try anal sex on yourself, maybe you're the person wanting to give anal sex to your partner, either way, the communication aspect is going to be very important. I wrote an entire blog on communication, so when you have a chance look it up. I will give the finer points:
Prepare: know what you want to talk about and make time for it. Write down some notes, practice talking to yourself, read my blog *wink*.
Start Talking: Respect each other, be honest and open. Always be positive, leave the past in the past always give a future perspective.

The fact that you are reading this blog means you are researching. So use that in your talk. You know that anal stimulation can be amazing and you know you have to be careful. If the talk goes well and they agree, move forward into the next section. If the talk goes bad and they want nothing to do with anal, respect them. They know how you feel, they know you're desires.

Maybe one day they will read more about it and decide they want to try it, maybe they won't. If you are in a loving relationship, compromise is a huge aspect of being in it, so keep on loving them and know that at least they listened.

Section 4: Foreplay/Outer-play and Lubricants
They want to try it to, great! Now, some fun times. As in all sexual acts, foreplay is essential for anal play. The more stimulated the person becomes, the more relaxed the muscles down there become, the more receptive the anus is to stimulation and therefore penetration...if you choose to go that route. Foreplay doesn't necessarily mean any stimulation of the anal area at all, just good old fashioned fun: making out, touching each other, kissing each others bodies...you know, foreplay!

When you get to genital stimulation, anything that is not penetration is considered outer-play: rubbing the clitoris, labia, penis, scrotum and anus. The anus is a highly dense area of nerve endings just waiting to be stimulated. Just a gentle blow of air across the area will cause shivers up your spine and goose bumps everywhere.

To start with good anal play, a good lubricant is necessary. The anus only makes a tiny amount of mucus and that is to help expel the bowels. So even with just outer play, you have to have something to help keep things moving along. Water-based lubricants are always a good start, but the thicker they are the better. There is a new one called Wet Gellee, this stuff is thick! You put it on, anywhere, it won't move unless you move it. It stays slicker a lot longer than traditional water-based and it comes in a nice strawberry flavour as well for our analinguists out there. There are also a plethora of water-based lubricants made just for the bum, like Anal Eaze, Anal Lube and Fruity Booty Anal Lube.

A good second choice is silicone. This silky smooth treat lasts much longer than water-based, doesn't get sticky or tacky, has no odor and a little goes a long way. It isn't the greatest for oral as it doesn't digest very well, so just don't use it for that.

With lubricants, try a couple and get a feel for what you like. Some people may be sensitive to the water-based varieties available but the silicone will be just right. Just rememember, have fun, communicate and just be open...minded that is!

Getting Down with Anal Sex, Part 1

We had a lot of questions on the Aren't We Naughty topic board pertaining to anal sex: how to talk a woman into it, how to get started for anal virgins, best lubricants for anal, best anal toys for men and women, do men like anal stimulation and the list goes on.

I'm very happy to say this is one of my favorite things to talk about, primarily because its still taboo for some people and second because it can be so much fun and people just don't know it yet. Anal sex isn't just for gay men (a surprising fact, a lot of them don't like it), it isn't just for the woman in the relationship (there is a lot of porn now with women wearing strap-ons pleasing men) and for the guys who do like anal pleasure, it doesn't mean your gay...seriously, who comes up with some of these stereotypes?

This is going to be a mini-series blog as there is a lot of information I want to get out, and as any of my readers know I do my research and pass it all to you. I have decided to do this in an old-school textbook style, complete with index:

I do want to answer one of the questions before I start into the mini series: How do you talk a woman into anal sex? You don't. Simply that. If you ask and they say no, you may ask why, but don't push it. You should never, ever try to talk anyone into anything they do not want to do. It is a violation of their trust in you as their partner and it is disrespectful. Jasmine at AskMen.com says it best: “Do not ever put your penis into a woman’s body without her express permission. Do not treat her body like a scoring device. She is not an object ...and if she is kind enough to share her beautiful butt with you, treat it with respect and be happy you were allowed close enough to breathe her in at all.”

Section 1: Anal Anatomy
Between the female vagina and the male scrotum is the perineum and beyond that lies the anus. The anus looks puckered and has thousands of nerve endings which makes it ultra sensitive and fun to stimulate. Next is the External Sphincter, this is a voluntary muscle, which means you can control it (just think of the last time you had to hold in a good poo, if you couldn't control those muscles...well, game over). Next is the Internal Sphincter, which is an involuntary muscle, which you cannot control. This is the important to discuss because if you try to proceed with anal sex and the person receiving is not ready or nervous the sphincters will not open and it will be painful for both of you.

Next is the anal canal, which is only 1-1.5 inches long, and then the rectum, which is about 8 inches long. During anal activities, this is where any fingers, toys or penis's will go. Anything past this is going into the colon and not recommended whatsoever. The rectum contains “little shelves in it called traverse folds. These folds help keep stool in place until you're ready to go to the bathroom. I'll discuss more about this in the next section...which is next!

Section 2: Anal Hygiene and Safety
I started talking about the rectums traverse folds...they keep the poo in place until you go to the bathroom, and its a primary area that fingers, toys and/or a penis will touch if inserted. So before you begin any anal play it is really important to clean yourself up, take a good shower and use an anal douche. This will ensure that any left over residue left in those little folds will be flushed out. It is always important to note that anything that goes into the bum should always be clean and after it has been used there should always be cleaned as soon as possible.

The anus is a very sensitive area...and I'm not just talking about the nerve endings. The skin there is very thin and easily torn if you are not careful. If you feel any pain whatsoever during any part of your anal play STOP what you are doing and check yourself out. There is a chance of an anal fissure, which is a small tear which can become infected. That would be important to go to the doctor.

After anal play the feeling of having to go the bathroom may be there...just go. It is important to clean up any residue from lubricant, other liquids and possible poo (it could happen). If you do decide to have anal intercourse, the penis should be covered in a condom, if not, he should clean his penis well to make sure no residual bacteria is left.

Always remember: Vagina to Anus NEVER Anus to Vagina. If you have anal play, clean up then you can go back to vaginal play.

MANCHESTER, U.K.—Carole Jahme, an evolutionary psychologist who writes a column for the Guardian, weighed in last week on why human beings have relatively larger penises (and smaller testicles) than their primate cousins and why size still matters to women. In a nutshell, so to speak, the answer to the above is “female mate choice.”

Jahme’s post was in response to the following question from a reader:

“Dear Carol, Why are women so obsessed with the size of a man's cock – wanting ones 6 inches and over and kicking others aside when they really should be concentrating on the emotional connection and love being shared, putting the size of the man's cock right out of her mind?”

Jahme’s answer went into greater evolutionary detail than the reader may have expected. “Female primates,” she wrote, “can experience multiple orgasms, and it has been theorized that ancestral hominid females sought out males who would sexually satisfy them. Through the mechanism of sexual selection, this will have increased penis size and altered structure.”

Today, wrote Jahme, the average erect gorilla penis is 1.25 inches long, the average chimp or bonobo penis is about 3.15 inches, and the average human penis stands erect at about 5.1 inches. Most primates, she adds, have a penis bone called a baculum, and achieve erections through muscle contractions. The human penis, on the other hand, evolved a system of vasocongestion (i.e., the swelling of bodily tissues caused by increased vascular blood flow and a localized increase in blood pressure) to achieve erection, with the result that an erect organ is far more flexible than that of other primates.

“This unique adaptation is thought to have been selected through female mate choice, and by the time Homo erectus arrived on the scene, the hominid penis was significantly longer, fatter and more bendy than our ape cousins’,” wrote Jahme. “It has even been theorized that bipedalism evolved in humans to allow the fashionably new, larger, flexible penis to be displayed to discerning females.”

That explains the human primate’s larger, more flexible penis, but what about his testicles? According to Jahme, “As a proportion of overall body size, chimp and bonobo testes are twice as large as human testes, whereas gorilla testes are half the size.”

The answer, she says, has everything to do with the correlations between primate mating patters and male genital anatomy. In short (hehe), chimps and bonobos exist in multi-male/multi-female groups, in which females mate with several different indivuduals, meaning that males “must reproductively compete in this way and larger testes will therefore confer greater reproductive fitness.”

Female gorillas, however, live in harems and don’t have as much choice, resulting in males with smaller penises and testes than other primates but larger canines and biceps to warn or fight off competitors.

Early hominid group dynamics were likely more akin to the bonobos, Jahme notes. “Ancestral females would have experienced a sexual freedom denied in Western cultures today and it has been suggested that our ancestors went through a period of matriarchy and enhanced female choice,” she wrote.

This brings us to the original question of why women continue to be obsessed with size. According to Jahme, the answer to that age-old question has never changed: they simply can’t help themselves.

“Women are as aware as men that to build a stable relationship you need trust, shared interests and the ability to keep each other amused,” she wrote. “But a woman is not going to ‘put the size of a man's cock right out of her mind,’ because she can't. Females have an evolved interest in the size of a man's penis, which has been sexually selected for its size and shape.

“But humans are also selected for creativity,” she adds. “We are highly innovative, imaginative apes. Accordingly, women's minds can be aroused by creativity and being sexually imaginative can be physically arousing, adding satisfying metaphorical inches to one's love life.”

Does any of this have anything to do with porn? It does, but only to the extent to which porn portrays penises as larger than the human average—with its direct correlation to female sexual satisfaction—and the not unrelated extent to which young males (and females) use adult entertainment to assess the adequacy of their own (or their mates’) genitalia. Because the number of human males with penises over seven inches in length declines precipitously, anything beyond that length is outside the evolutionary preference of from 5.5 to 6.5 inches. That average is not by accident; anything over could tend to cause more pain than pleasure.

In other words, monster cocks may attract certain size queens, but as far as the survival of the species is concerned, too much of that sort of friction could spell doom for the human race.

How to Grow Your Penis (and should you do it?)

The size of genitalia is something that is quite important...to the person it is on. Granted, there is some sub-conscious mating signals that the bigger the penis/breasts are the better offspring they will give. In all honesty, guys, your penis is just one part of you. Although it can give great pleasure, so do your hugs and kisses and cuddles and talks and walks and everything else you do that makes you, well, you.

Now I have that emotional crap out of the way, of course you can grow your penis. Should you? If your self-esteem is so low you can't even talk to a woman, you might want to at least look into it. Mind you, this is a very difficult subject as the methods that actually work can be painful, may cause disfigurement and in some methods take a very long time.

First, what doesn't work: pills, penis pumps, jelqing or clamping.
*Pills: Dr. Ira Sharlip, a spokesman for the American Urological Association, has said, "There is no such thing as a penis pill that works. These are all things that are sold for profit. There's no science or substance behind them." (Wikipedia).
*Penis Pumps: Although they are great for those with erectile dysfunction, or ED, they are not going to make your penis permanently larger. When I have sold them, I know that it is temporary and to keep any extra length/girth that the pump gave you have to put on a penis ring before taking off the pump. Couples who use these have noticed a difference and like it. But for enlargement: “The effectiveness of penis pumps was examined by Kazem, Hosseini and Alizadeh. They studied 37 men with penis length less than 10 cm and found no significant change in penile length after using pumps for six months,” Wikipedia.
*Jelqing: I honestly had not heard of this until I started researching this topic and to be honest, it doesn't sound like it would work...look it up is all I have to say.
*Clamping: WHY!!!! I have been selling penis rings for over 3 years, granted there are some that have been in the business for a lot longer, but I know that a tight ring is a no no! Other devices used in this technique: shoe strings, cable clamp, tie strings....WHAT!!! A doctor and myself would faint hearing these things being used around the penis. It would cut off blood flow, could cause severe inflammation meaning a trip to the emergency room to cut off either the device or your penis. You choose. Needless to say anymore except this doesn't work, don't do it!

I need a break after that one.

Now on to what works. I am going to start with methods you can do yourself: cosmetic changes, stretching and hanging.
*Cosmetic changes: shaving the hair on and around the penis, losing some weight and standing up straight will make your member appear larger. I know that sounds so easy, but these little tricks also make you look well groomed, healthy and proper stance gives off confidence which women find very, very sexy.
*Stretching: We carry the main device that is used for this technique, the AndroPenis. As it is the oldest form of elongating the penis, here you go. “Weight hanging consists of attaching a device (usually a rope or a strap) that grips their glans or just behind the glans and allows a weight to be suspended for a specific amount of time. Then a conscious effort is made to exercise the penis by raising the weight in repetitions (lasting no more than 5 to 10 minutes at a time) starting with the smallest and lightest weight 1/16 pound to the heaviest usually ¼ pound or more, to increase the strength and stamina as well as elongation of the penis.” (Wikipedia)

Last, but not least, are the surgical techniques. The main one for penis enlargement involves cutting a suspension ligament located at the pubic bone area to release some of the extra length found there. This is not a routine surgery, it can cause the loss of erection and is strongly discouraged for those with normal, functional penises.

So, as you can read, even at the best with surgery, it can be the worst. If you still are questioning it, here are some stats, maybe that will help: “Boys' penises start to grow during puberty achieving between 2 and 5 inches (5 - 13 cm) in length. They will continue growing until approximately the age of 20. If you are under 20 you may still experience some growth naturally. I honestly didn't know what I would find when looking this particular topic up. I mean, I know that sex is vitally important to our survival as a species, but I guess like a lot of people, its really difficult to think of older civilizations as not only sexual, but enjoying it to the point of inventing toys.

I was wrong, I admit it. In fact, I honestly thought that the oldest sex toy on record would be only a few hundred, maybe a few thousand years old. I was wrong there as well. The oldest sex toy was found in an archaeological dig in southwest Germany, in the famous Hohle Fels Cave near Ulm in the Swabian Jura...dated 30,000 years old.

What they found was a stone object, 20cm long (8 inches) and 3cm wide (1.25 inches). It had a distinct shape and size can really mean one thing...it was a sex object...a dildo. Mind you, "'In addition to being a symbolic representation of male genitalia, it was also at times used for knapping flints,' explained Professor Nicholas Conard, from the department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology, at Tübingen University.”

Sexual objects that have been found also have a worship significance, such as naked statues and phallic symbols for fertility instead of just sexual pleasure. Another old piece is the Venus of Willendorf, another German find, a carved piece of ivory of a naked woman that has been dated between 35,000-40,000 years old. “The pronounced breasts, buttocks and genitals familiar in later Venuses are usually interpreted to be expressions of fertility.” (BBC 2). There have been several Venus' found around the world, all showing the female form in this manner.

As far as phallic symbols, they are found throughout Greek, Egyptian and Roman history for fertility...and sexual uses. Even China has their mark with a double-ended dildo made of wood. Human beings are one of the only mammals that actually enjoy sex. It isn't just for procreation, its for fun as well. All About Penis Rings

Public Service Announcement: Hygiene and Sex, Part 2: Men

Please note: I'm going to use some graphic description on some issues that have to be addressed about proper hygiene and sex. Some of it is quite disturbing, but true. If you have weak stomach, don't read this. Again, I am not a doctor, just a concerned person about what people are doing to their bodies.

If you read Part 1 for the Women, you'll find out quickly the reasoning behind me writing this. If you haven't read it, please do. Too many people think you can do whatever you want sexually. Pornography and lack of education seem to be the root causes. I have noticed that most movies now put on a disclaimer that the acts shown are not always safe to do, so at least they know they have added to some of the issues with unsafe sexual hygiene.

Gentleman, you have as much as a role in the safe sexual hygiene of your ladies and you owe it to yourself to be clean. If you have been working all day, thinking about your lover and just can't wait to ravish her when you get home, please know that your sweaty, stinky and bacteria covered body should not go any where near her until you have showered. I have asked some of the men in the office here if they had anything to say on the subject...all said the same: “Keep it clean or you won't get any.”

For the men with foreskin, it is so important for you to keep everything clean. If you don't pull your foreskin back and wash it, the urine will stay there and bacteria will grow, which could cause your lady love a much unwanted infection.

Okay, here's one that I never thought I'd write about, wiping. Gentleman, just like the women you need to wipe your bum correctly. If you wipe in a downward manner, you risk getting poo bacteria on your scrotum which then can transfer onto to other places...gross! You need to wipe up...start and the anus and go up the crack. Wipe a couple of times just to make sure you got it all. Always wash your hands afterwards...clean hands and fingers mean a lot to us.

I know that a lot of you are hairy in the bum area, but there is a solution to that as well: trim up with a shaver made for that. This will make clean up that much easier and the smell will go away as well.

Scrotum health is extremely important, as you may, one day in the future, want to have kids. My Kama Sutra says it all: “Did you know that too high temperature prevents spermatazoons production? Now that you know about this, avoid everything that is likely to increase groin and perinium temperature. Do not take hot baths and again avoid skin-tight clothes. Otherwise, you are going to lose your ability to impregnate.”

Use powder on your scrotum. Find a powder you like and powder up after a shower (make sure they are dry first). The powder will help absorb sweat throughout the day, keeping them cool and smelling good.

Believe me, if you have good hygiene, your lady will notice and be so thankful.

This grape wasn't removed and thus started to ferment and cause a bacterial infection and that is when the lady decided to see the doctor. All she noticed was the smell.

Next is the condom. There have been several found in routine pelvic exams. Most of the women hadn't had sex for some time and didn't even know it was there. Although this only caused some minor irritation to the vaginal wall, it should have been noticed (especially by her partner).

And lastly, the potato salad. This was used as a lubricant because the couple, new to sex, didn't know you couldn't do that. Due to the inability for the salad to expel, it caused a growth of maggots that finally got the woman to go to her doctor.

What is going on in the world? I was taught very simple rules of hygiene when I was quite young (and reviewed when I started to menstruate), which I found on My Kama Sutra: “The rules of female hygiene are quite simple. Here are they:
* Wash your genitals with warm water from pubis in the direction of anus in order not to infect vagina with microbes from anus. Do not direct the water stream towards the vagina. Direct and strong water stream not only washes out the protective lubricant, but also contributes to harmful bacteria getting into vagina thus increasing risk of inflammations.
* Dry your genitals with a clean soft towel. The towel must be used only by its owner.
* You do not need any sponges for intimate hygiene. You are likely to scratch very tender genitals skin with a sponge.
* Only skin around the entrance to the vagina can be washed with soap.
* Do not take a bath or swim in a swimming pool while menstruation. Change tampons at least 4-5 times a day. Remember that a tampon can be in the vagina not more than for 4 hours.
* You had better avoid sex contacts during menstruation . Sex life during this period increases the risk of inflammatory processes in the uterus, especially if partners neglect the rules of hygiene.
* Do not wear synthetic trunks or at least wear them very seldom. Such an underwear prevents the skin from breathing and creates a favorable environment for harmful bacteria. Cotton underwear will help you avoid such troubles.”

Very simple, right? After hearing what I heard at the beginning of this blog, I knew that some people may not know the simple rules, now that's taken care of, we can talk about the more advanced hygiene rules.

Anatomy lesson: The vagina is a canal that contains its own microorganisms that keep it clean. It is dark and moist which means anything that comes into the vagina that is not supposed to be there can cause a disruption (infection). Things that can safely go into the vagina: tampon (change every 3-4 hours as per package instructions), penis (clean of course, I'll get to you guys later), sexual aides (again, clean), lubrication (water-based or silicone) and clean fingers. Wikipedia mentions a lot of these, but here are some specifics:
“*Anything which has been in contact with the anal area (see anal sex) should be thoroughly washed with soap and water or a similar disinfectant before coming in contact with the vulva or vagina.
*Use condoms during heterosexual intercourse, practice safer sex, know your sex partners, ask sex partners to practice basic hygiene of their genitals. Use artificial lubrication during the intercourse if the amount naturally produced is not enough.
*Be careful with objects inserted inside the vagina. Improper insertion of objects into any body opening can cause damage: infection, cutting, piercing, trauma, blood loss, etc.
*Avoid letting any contaminants inside the vagina, included dirt but especially sand.”

Others things that should not go into the vagina (or near it to be honest): food, any oils, creams or lotions that have sugar in them or anything not clean! I know that Aren't We Naughty sells amazing oral creams for both men and women, but they are only to go on the clitoris for the man to have a tasty treat. If you use one on your man, he needs to clean up before intercourse can commence.

Ladies, take care of your body as a whole, the vagina in particular. It is one place that we can go looking at and it needs special attention. If you have any issues that you need addressed, go to your doctor. Don't be shy, they have heard and seen everything and they are there to help. Also, get to know your body. If you put something in there, you should be able to get it out.

Communication and Sex

I was happy to see that people are voting on the website for topics about talking to your partner to find out what they want and how to tell them what you want. There were three topics that were the same, just worded different: How to Find out What Your Partner Wants in Bed/How to Act Out Your Fantasies/How to Tell Your Partner Your Fantasies, but those all equal to, drum roll please, communication.

It is extremely important to communicate with your partner. I will note I am not a doctor or therapist, so I'm only giving guidelines to help you open up the channels of communication. If the problems with communication run deeper, you really should consult with your doctor/therapist.

With that out of the way, I am a research hound, so this was fun for me. I am also in a committed relationship, and no matter how long we've been together, we can always communicate better. So, as I'm writing this, I'm learning a lot on how to be a better partner as well. Another important thing to think about is the communication is about sex, which can be fun, but it also is very exposing, literally and figuratively.

I know that men and women have different ways to approach things, but at the end of the day you both need to open up and talk, so these steps are for both of the sexes.

Preparing for the Talk
The first article I read about communication was titled: How to Communicate with Your Partner. They agreed that communication is extremely important in relationships and gave a list of good tips, but none that really fit here except this: “Approach gently but do not start with negative warnings that this conversation is going to have a negative (or weird) twist to it.” Any start to a conversation that is important is really hard to delve into, but if you let them know it's about sex...I would think that would be a more welcome idea than money, bills, etc.

On Mama's Health, they recommend to “clarify the issue yourself”. That means to know exactly what you want to talk about. Think about it, write it down and be honest with yourself. If you want to try a role-play where he is the plumber and you're the lonely housewife write down the details, because if he agrees, he'll want know what to do.

Make time for this conversation. Most of the time we don't...and that is where feelings and thoughts are left unsaid, making each other wonder what the other is thinking.

Starting the Talk
Make sure that you and your partner are both ready for a conversation. If either one of you have had a bad day, talk about that first. Once you and/or they feel better, it will then be easier to start the conversation you want to have. Next, lay down some ground rules. Cory Silverberg had an amazing article about this topic, one section really popped out to me: “Respecting Differences in Sexual Interests...everyone needs to agree not to belittle, shame, or otherwise laugh at their partner’s sexual interests. This doesn’t mean you have to like them or act them out. But if your partner takes the risk of exposing a sexual desire, you need to consider that kind of sharing a compliment, and be respectful, even if you want nothing to do with the actual proposal.” Once those rules are laid down, you can start sharing.

The Talk
Take a deep breath, let it out. Repeat if necessary. As important as it is to be honest with yourself, be honest with your partner. Before you say anything that may sound negative, always use the Communication Sandwich: give two bits of positive (we have such a great time in bed, you are an amazing lover), the challenge (but I think we can spice things up) and then another two bits of positive (and I know you love lingerie and me in it). Then continue on (how about you wearing an outfit for me?). Now, they may or may not respond right away. If there is no response except a blank stare, let them know, again, you are just sharing your mind and you don't need an answer right way, although no would be fine. If need be, say “I'll give you some time to think it over, how about we discuss this later”.

The important part, make sure and discuss it again. Make another time, have a sit and gently remind them what you had talked about and just ask if they have thought about it. Remember to have your details ready as they may start to ask some questions.

Some of you are sitting there and thinking “Great, I know how to talk to them, but how do I get them to talk to me?” Honestly, you taking the first step can help them open up. I'll get a little personal here to help out.

My Story
As my husband is quite private, I will not divulge all the details as it might embarrass him (I learned this by him communicating his feelings about discretion). I decided I wanted to tell him about a fantasy I had. I was quite nervous as this was early in our relationship and even though I'm usually quite an open talker, this was hard! I started the conversation with “I have something I want to share with you. If one of us is having a bad day, it takes one to talk and the other to listen...the same goes into the sexual realm.

Sex is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, but if you or your partner don't communicate, it can become boring and you might even stop having sex with each other and look elsewhere. Although it is just one part of your relationship, it is pretty important. Remember that you and your partner have valid feelings, desires and wants and all you have to do is listen and be respectful of them. Who knows how far your relationship as a whole can become by just communicating.
