On Saturday, the 21st of January 11 junctionites showed us once again what it takes to do our bit for those who are not as privileged as we are. The event was Khel Khel Mein, an annual sports event for underprivileged children and an initiative of Concern India Foundation. Khel Khel Mein is an event that aims to make that particular day for these children special… it ended up being a little more for the volunteers – Very Very Special.

A very special thanks to the following volunteers who spared a day in their life to bring joy to those who need it the most: Shivani Diwedi, Anondo Dutta, Sameer Ingole, Sourav Bhowmick, Imran Mannan, Richika Sureka, Raunak Bose, Satyesh Singh, Suvajit Chakraborty, Hitesh Chaturvedi and Sanjoy Chakraborty.

My best wishes to you and your family for the New Year. May 2012 give you happiness, learning, health and fulfillment.
The year just over has been a challenging year across the world. The World's largest economy the United States has struggled with little or no growth as unemployment continues to be a problem. The European Union has faced severe problems of sovereign default which unfortunately will get worse before it gets better. China which is now the World's second largest economy has faced considerable labour related problems as the World economy slows and the aspirations of the Chinese people increases.
On the socio - political front the Arab spring has put pressure on the Energy supply - chain and some of our neighbouring countries continue to fight extremism.
We in India have been adversely impacted by all these developments across the World. This is natural as today we live in an integrated World. To add to the global problems we in India have also had our own unique issues such as the 2G, CWG, Iron Ore scams...
We in mj have had to live with these issues as have all Companies in India and the World. However where some of the others have faltered we have grown. And grown at an enviable rate of 40 % year on year. We have grown as we were better prepared to face the challenges and to spot opportunities in adversity. While others would have seen a glass half full and been complacent we saw it as half empty and worked hard to fill the tumbler. Looking for innovative ways to fill the glass. Challenging the norm. Never being satisfied.
We engaged with Goldratt in 2011 and they have been able to fine tune our services in metaljunction, valuejunction and buyjunction so far and also brought about an alignment in the operations of financejunction and mjedge to better support the Company grow. I believe that the engagement with Goldratt will give us large and sustainable dividends in 2012 and beyond.
In 2012 we need to ensure that we are able to build a Decisive Competitive Edge in the sale of imported Coal and Steel. To take up this challenge we will be centralizing these two initiatives ( under a newly created Incubation Cell) and provide sufficient bandwidth and other resources to make a breakthrough.
We also need to establish a DCE for our newer initiatives of straightline and autojunction.
We have broken into the International market with an agreement with Nat Steel & Bright Bar of Australia which we will build upon and take forward. We have also entered into an agreement with two Paris based Companies - EPSA & BuyPro who would support buyjunction to break in to the European market. And take our nascent association with Tata Steel Europe to a much higher level.
Our functional units of Technology, Finance & Accounts, Administration, Internal Audit, Business Excellence, Marketing, HR and Procurement have really walked the extra mile in providing support and direction to the Business Units to succeed. To assist them further in their endeavour we will soon be getting external Consultants to work with us in further aligning and integrating their functioning to drive organizational growth.
While we have achieved a TBEM score of 450 - 500 which is indeed a commendable achievement we need to very quickly reach 600 +. This score would mean that our processes our World Class. However for the year 2012 our target is 550 + and plans are being implemented to achieve this at our next assessment.
None of what we have been able to achieve over the last 10 years and more specifically in 2011 would have been possible if it was not for our highly dedicated, innovative, caring, ethical and purposeful junctionites. I thank you for what you have done and I speak not only for myself but also for the Board of Directors and for our two Promoters - SAIL & TATA Steel.
During the first quarter of 2012 we will be more strongly aligning the Company's score card with each and everyone in the Company. Work was begun in 2011 with the Rich Job study being conducted by TATA group HR which will be rolled out over the next couple of months. Parallelly the AOP for FY12 - 13 is being finalized. What we will achieve by 1st of April 2012 is a direct connect / alignment of - Company - BU / FU - Individual. This alignment will reside on a Performance Management System which the company is currently evaluating and will be implemented in the next couple of months.
I believe that an aligned and integrated PMS will greatly enhance your working as it will be an efficient and transparent reflection of the goals that were set and how well you have been able to achieve them or even better them. Needless to mention the Reward & Recognition's will flow from the PMS whether it be Increments, Variable Pay or even the GEM awards. And all the other awards that we have been planning to offer but did not in the absence of an efficient and transparent PMS.
We will take forward the MET initiative which we initiated in August 2011 with further enthusiasm and verve in 2012. I believe that this initiative will be of great importance to the Country. Uniting people who want to make a positive change by giving them a vibrant platform which they can use as a pulpit of reform.
No New Year message will ever be complete unless I personally thank all those who have worked tirelessly and often without any recognition in furthering the cause of giving to those less fortunate than us - the ejunction team of organizers, trainers and administrators. Each one of you has contributed unselfishly to the wonderful cause as espoused by ejunction and we all salute you.

Convocation of first batch of students trained by ejunction and Tata Steel

As you are aware that ejunction in its endeavour to reach out to the most deprived and deserving learners from financially-challenged communities had joined hands with TATA Steel, Jamshedpur. The training programme started at the Kasidih Community Centre (KCC) on the 11th of June, 2011 and was completed in November 2011.

30 students from the vicinity were enrolled for this training programme, of which 17 (6 SC/ST) students successfully completed the training. Of the successful candidates, 2 were absorbed by TATA Business Support Services Limited (TBSSL), something which makes all of us proud.

The convocation ceremony was held on Monday, the 19th of December, 2011 at KCC. B L Raina, Chairman, JUSCO graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and handed over the certificates to the candidates. Volunteers of ejunction, members of our branch office and that of TATA Steel, Urban Services were present at the function.

Feedback from the trainers has shown that the classes were very well coordinated. We thank Tanmoy Ghole for volunteering as coordinator for the classes.

And heartiest thanks to Anup Chand Lal for taking upon himself the responsibility of spearheading this initiative and seeing to it that the programme was executed with absolute dedication and commitment till the very end.

It is with this dignity and painstaking excellence that we have been conducting ejunction classes for the last 4 years. When we started ejunction in 2007, our only intention was to contribute in our own way towards creating enlightened minds in the most deprived and deserving sections of society. It was our own way of giving back to society what we felt was deservingly theirs. With ejunction, we set out to change lives, not knowing that it would change ours….forever.

Today, it brings us immense pride and joy to let you know that mjunction (for our ejunction initiative) has been adjudged as the National Winner in the ‘Employee Volunteering Program of the Year’ in the Corporate category at the prestigious ‘Apeejay India Volunteer Awards 2011’ (AIVA) held in New Delhi on 25th September, 2011. Shri Salman Khurshid - Hon’ble Union Minister for Law and Justice and Ministry of Minority Affairs, presided over the program as the Chief Guest and presented the awards to the winners. The four key award categories were - Volunteer of the Year, Youth Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer involving NGO of the Year and Employee Volunteering Program of the Year (Corporate).

Shortlisted nominees in the Corporate category included Standard Chartered, GMR, BD, Bharti Airtel, Fidelity Investments, Accenture, IBM and Tata Consultancy Services. Organized by the Apeejay Surrendra Group, AIVA is the first-of-its-kind initiative to recognize and reward inspiring volunteering engagement and policies for individuals, NGOs and Corporate. The awards program was organized in association with iVolunteer, International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) and TATA Tea Jaago Re as online partners and was supported by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV).

Seen here in the photograph is our MD and Chairman of the ejunction trust with the trophy and the certificate. We also received a cheque of Rs.1 Lac which would obviously be used to further this cause which is so very close to our heart.

This honour is a tribute to the dedicated and untiring efforts of all ejunction volunteers who have taken upon this most noble cause. We admire your spirit of altruism towards contributing to and developing the social order and hope that this recognition only helps in renewing your vigour. Every effort and every hour that you have put in has contributed towards bringing in positive change.

MD inaugurated the first session of 'Friday Flicker', an initiative of our quizzing club, inQUIZitive, on Friday,the 5th of August @ the training room. On the occasion he also unveiled the club logo and asked the first question. The members had an exciting time, with Quiz master Debashish Mukherjee fielding bouncers from the beginning. Finally the team comprising of Abhishek Kar and Subhankar Debroy won with 75 points, way ahead of the runners up who scored 40 points.

You are aware that ejunction, in its endeavour to reach out to the most deprived and deserving learners from financially-challenged communities, started its first affiliated centre at the Hemchandra Library, Kidderpore. And it was a proud moment indeed for us when the first batch of trainees graduated with flying colours.

The Convocation ceremony for this first batch of pass outs was held on Wednesday, the 3rd of August, at the Hemchandra Library, Kidderpore. The occasion was graced by our MD, along with Shri Asim Kr Chatterjee, President, Hemchandra Library, Shri Sasti Das, Councillor, Ward No 76 KMC and Janab Firhad Hakim, Member of the Legislative Assembly, along with junctionites and non-junctionites who were voluntary trainers for the program.

This program was inaugurated in March 2011 and a total of 17 trainees had enrolled for it. 14 trainees have successfully completed the 4 months training program on computer basics and soft skills. 16 volunteer trainers were associated with this program, which included 6 junctionites and 10 non-junctionites from nearby localities.

The following are some interesting facts about this first batch that you should know.

• Trainees from the first batch of ejunction have come forward and volunteered as trainers for the practical classes of the current batch
• During the course of the programme, trainees have undertaken projects on three Bengali Poets including Michael Madhusudan, Kobi Hemchandra and Rangalal Bandopadhyay.
• About 15 books on advanced computer learning for trainees who are preparing for competitive examinations were donated to the library. These books were donated by several enthusiastic junctionites.

This only goes to show the attachment and the level of commitment that junctionites have for this lovingly nurtured endeavour of ours. The next batch of 20 trainees is now ready to take wing. We would like to wish them the success of their predecessors.

From its very beginning, the principal objective of ejunction has been to support, train and uplift the specially-abled and financially challenged sections of society. In order to further this endeavour that we have so lovingly nurtured, we have always been on the lookout for partners who can share this vision of ours and assist us as we keep turning it into reality. And today mjunction has found one more worthy partner in TATA Steel.

Moving a step further in our vision to reach out to more and more special people and to make a difference to their lives, ejunction tied up with TATA Steel to conduct classes from their Kasidih Community Centre in Jamshedpur. Members of ejunction trust were in Jamshedpur for the inauguration of the course last week. The event also saw Mr Sanjay, Head, Urban Services along with employees and volunteers from mjunction and TATA Steel in attendance.

Under this latest venture by ejunction, under-privileged youth, specifically from the backward community will go through the four-month ejunction course wherein they will be trained in basic computer and communication skills. 17 trainers from our Jamshedpur branch, along with 3 from TATA Steel have volunteered for the program which has seen 40 eager students register so far.

Heartiest thanks to Mr Anup Chand Lal for spearheading the initiative and ensuring its smooth coordination and implementation. We also thank Mr Tonmoy Ghole for volunteering as coordinator for the classes.

We are very happy that this initiative of ours has now touched shores afar. Let us all pledge to do our bit to give those less fortunate than us a chance at eLitracy – the ejunction way.

mjunction projects huge growth potential in eProcurement business

A press conference was held today in our Corporate office to share highlights of our 10 year journey and plans going forward with the media. Journalists from various national and local dailies like Economic Times, Business Standard, Bengal Post, The Telegraph, Vishwamitra, Dainik Jagran etc. were present at the conference which was presided over by MD along Mr Vinaya Varma.

In his interaction with the media, MD shared the company’s journey of innovative firsts over the last 10 years, our plans going forward and how the company sees buyjunction as the major growth driver for achieving the mj@12 objective. MD also gave the media an insight into how we plan to achieve the high growth target that we have set for ourselves over the next two years.

Adding another milestone to our long standing relationship with SAIL, we inaugurated our new premises in the steel town of Bokaro. S S Mohanty, Managing Director, Bokaro Steel Plant, inaugurated the new premises in the presence of our Managing Director, Viresh Oberoi.

Ujjal Bhattacharya, Vinaya Varma, Arun Babaria along with other executives of MJ & SAIL were also present at the occasion. Prior to the inauguration, there was a formal meeting between senior executives of both the companies to decide on future strategy for increasing customer satisfaction and for increased usage of ITES to bring in further process efficiency in the steel supply chain.

We are glad to have had the presence of these distinguished dignitaries for this momentous occasion. We are proud of our partnership with SAIL that has only strengthened over the years. This is one relationship that shall only get stronger with the years.

Thankfully for us, we never lost this spirit of constant pioneering and innovation. In our journey of the last 10 years, we have been constantly pushing the limits and coming up with pioneering ideas that have changed entire markets.... Starting our journey of innovation in 2001, we ended up launching eProcurement services sharing infrastructure and technology costs of the sell side of the business (buyjunction), introduced innovative eFinance solutions (financejunction), pioneered online sale of coal (coaljunction), converted a cost center into a profit center (mjunctionedge), pioneered Auto eRetailing in India (autojunction), created value out of idle assets (valuejunction) and launched corporate eGifting (straightline). Not too bad for a company that initially aspired to change the eMarketplace for secondary steel in India, with its inception as metaljunction.

Today, two of our pioneering ideas have found pride of place in TATA Sphere’s commemorative edition on “TATA Accomplishments in a Decisive Decade”.
