Another season is wrapping up and another batch of science fiction and fantasy shows have been sent before the network executioners. And interestingly enough, only new shows got the axe this year. Any series that had a couple of seasons under its belt got the greenlight for another year (with the exception of NBC’s Chuck which was in its final season). But most of the newcomers had no such luck and ended after brief runs. Here’s a quick rundown on each of those with my thoughts on what led to their cancellations and whether they have a chance of being saved. Full Article at This Link

Sci Fi Trifles: Useless but essential pop culture tidbits and trivia from the worlds of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror that once you have read them you don’t know how you have lived so long without knowing them.

This marks the 100th post in our Sci Fi Trifles series and we thought it appropriate to focus on Bill Mumy because he played an important part in the very first Sci Fi Trifles post.

Bill Mumy (pronounced Moo-mee) is widely known by sci fi fans for his portrayal of young Will Robinson on the camp 60’s TV series Lost in Space as well as his later role as the Minbari ambassadorial aide Lennier on the epic series Babylon 5. But did you know that Mumy has actually had a long career in the genre from before his Lost in Space days to the present, and do you know what the actor is up to these days?

Even though Mumy is probably best known from his days as a child actor playing Will Robinson in Lost in Space where he received most of the screen time along with Dr. Zachary Smith (played by Jonathan Harris), and the Robot (played by Bob May and voiced by Dick Tufeld), he had already made an important genre appearance several years before that series aired. Mumy played the infamous role of Anthony Fremont in the classic Twilight Zone episode “It’s a Good Life” where his young character terrorizes his town with his ominous mental powers. He also appeared in two other TZ episodes playing different characters. And then in 1964, he was the first choice as Eddie Munster for The Munsters TV series, but his parents wouldn’t let him take the part because of the amount of makeup it required (the role then went to Butch Patrick). He did show up in one episode of that series, though as one of Eddie’s friends. Other genre shows he appeared on during that time included Bewitched and I Dream of Jeanie.

During the 70′s, Mumy had several guest star appearances on non-genre television shows and later in that decade he wrote a script for Lost in Space that would have seen the crew of the Jupiter 2 returning home. 20th Century Fox wanted to move forward with the project, but Irwin Allen balked at it and it never got off the ground. Mumy returned to the Lost in Space universe yet again when he wrote a comic book continuation of the series for Innovation Comics in the early 90’s. The comic was quite popular but ended its run when the publisher folded after declaring bankruptcy.

He also scored a long coveted guest starring role on Star Trek: DS9 in the episode “The Siege of AR-558”. Apart from that, he had several voice roles on animated shows like Batman: The Animated Series, The Animaniacs, and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. He also showed up in an episode of the 2002 Twilight Zone revival that revisited “It’s a Good Life” where he played a grown up Anthony Fremont who has to square off with his daughter (played by Mumy’s real life daughter) who has the same powers.

Apart from his acting and writing, Bill Mumy has also had a long music career, both on his own and as part of the comedy duo Barnes and Barnes. That group is best known for the novelty hit “Fish Heads” which is one of the most requested songs on the Dr. Demento Show (and you can read more about that at the very first Sci Fi Trifles entry at this link). He also created and performed in the band The Be Five which was comprised of actors from the Babylon 5 series such as Andreas Katsulas, Mira Furlan, Peter Jurasik and Claudia Christian along with other musicians. They put out one album in 1998 titled Trying to Forget. In addition, Mumy has had a long voice career narrating A&E’s Biography series along with other documentaries that have appeared on several other cable networks. He has also lent his voice to any of a number of commercials for companies such as Ford Motors, Budweiser, and McDonald’s. And just recently, he could be heard on a 2011 episode of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien as Agent Bryson.
