ERROR – “Microsoft Office <office version> 2010 cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the Office program by using the Control Panel”

I recently came across this issue after I’d built several machines using a tailored system image for a specific customer. The image contains a copy of Office 2010 Home and Business, but is actually an OEM version. Usually all I have to do, after the image has been applied to the new desktops, is change the Office key by using the GUI via the control panel. So this is what I did. The key was accepted, however when I tried to open Word I received the above error message. I knew the key was correct as the GUI accepted it first time round. I instantly thought of SLMGR.VBS (the command line based activation script for Windows 7 Operating Systems), and wondered if there was anything similar for Office 2010. A bit of digging about in the Office 14 folder lead me to OSPP.vbs

Running this via the command line; C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14OSPP.vbs (Program Files (x86) if running a 64bit version of Windows), displays a HTM file of commands for the OSPP.vbs script:

While still in command prompt, run the following commands in this order:

CSCRIPT OSPP.vbs /dstatus (this will show the last 5 characters of the current installed product key)

CSCRIPT OSPP.vbs /unpkey:ABCDE (replacing ABCDE with the last 5 digits of the installed product key)

CSCRIPT OSPP.vbs /inpkey:xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx (replacing x’s with your new product key)

CSCRIPT OSPP.vbs.act (activates new product key)

Now run any Office application and browse to File>Help to check your Office software is successfully activated:

Have you been caught out by the weather this week?

Staff snowed in and unable to get to work?

Lost productivity resulting from “snow days” costs UK businesses millions of pounds every year which coupled with an unstable economy has crippled many small companies.

But by setting yourself up for cloud computing, you can minimise these losses ensuring business continuity and maximising productivity throughout the winter months.

Cloud computing solutions, quite simply, take your business data out of your office and place it in “the cloud” – which is basically a huge datacentre run by your IT provider. Your data is then hosted in the datacentre and accessed by you and your employees via the internet. Which means that when the snow falls and staff are stuck at home they can carry on working as normal with full access to company data and emails.

And Microsoft’s cloud offering takes it a few steps further. Office 365 not only lets employees access, share, update and save documents from a central location, but also lets them make real-time contact via instant messaging, audio and video calling, live web conferencing and online meetings. And of course email, calendar and contacts access on any devices – desktop, laptop or mobile.

Of course, cloud computing is dependent on a reliable internet connection but most of us have one of those these days. It’s also more cost effective to set-up and run than an on-premise solution as it removes the need to purchase and maintain expensive servers in your offices. Cloud computing effectively converts your IT from a capital cost into a running cost as you pay your provider on a monthly basis to rent the space in their datacentres, which can make budgeting easier.

So in many ways, it’s win win. Cloud computing cuts costs and ensures consistency of productivity which in turn saves you money. Which in the current financial climate, is something we are all striving to achieve.

Recently had a job where I had to remove McAfee from 40 machines in order to replace them with F-Secure PSB. Removing the McAfee AV was not a problem (having admin rights of course) but the issue I had was removing the McAfee Agent. When trying to remove this I would get the error…

‘McAfee Agent cannot be removed while it is in managed mode’

This made sense to me as McAfee was centrally managed from a server, though we were not given the admin password for the administration console by the previous IT support company.

Solution:

* Open Command Prompt (admin rights needed)

* Browse to C:Program FilesMcAfeeCommon Framework (Program Files (x86) if running a 64bit Operating System)

* Run command – frminst.exe /remove=agent

Job done!

A new phishing scam is being reported in the media and this time it’s emails that are made to look like they come from Amazon.

According to Moneywise.co.uk, the emails look like a receipt from Amazon and come with the subject line “Your order from Amazon”. They will probably include Amazon’s contact details, logo and website and will give (fake) details of a recent purchase you have made - usually an expensive product, (which of course, you have not actually bought.) It will direct you to the Amazon website via a link in the email so that you can apply for a refund. But of course there is no refund, and the scammers will simply capture your personal details for use in fraud.

If you are unlucky enough to get one of these dodgy emails, get in touch with Amazon through their official website (not through the dodgy email!) and they will investigate. And remember that as ever, companies like Amazon NEVER ask for your personal details via email.

So be on your guard and spread the word. Thanks to MoneyWise for bringing thie to our attention. You can read their article on the scam here.

I recently came across a problem when trying to install the Office 365 desktop apps configurator. The machine in question was a Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 Running with Office 2007 SP3. When I tried to install the apps configurator I received this message….

Checked Windows update again to make sure everything was up to date, as Microsoft advise it should be. Turns out the culprit was actually SP3 for Office 2007! Apparently Microsoft are aware of this issue and working on a hot fix for it, but for now you have to uninstall SP3 completely!

To do this download the Service Pack uninstall tool for Office 2007, which can be found here.

Extract the files to a location on your hard drive, open command prompt and navigate to the directory you extracted the files to. Run the following command to check if there are valid patch releases that can be uninstalled:

oarpman.exe /report

If you have SP3 you should see at least 10 patch updates with the label O12SP3. To remove the patch updates run the following:

oarpman.exe /remove O12SP3

This might take a while before it looks like it’s doing anything, but eventually you’ll see the patch updates being removed within the command prompt window. You will be prompted to reboot once complete.
