Together with OUSD’s Office of Equity, AYPAL recently implemented a Disaggregated Data Resolution originally passed in 2016, expanding the scope of the resolution to apply to ALL students! This is the first resolution of it’s kind to disaggregate data for Asian Pacific Islander, LatinX, and African Immigrant students! There is also an increase of catagories students can identify as when they enroll, eliminating situations where they previously had to mark themselves as “Other”. Check out this student produced video from KDOL for more info! Shouts out to former Youth Campaign Organizer Jamie for being a part of the interviews! We hope this video offers an example of what other school districts and city’s everywhere can do to increase the visibility of underrepresented students and communities. We hope this offers insight as to why we need ethnic studies, No Hxstory No Self, KNOW Hxstory, KNOW Self. #WeHere

Site Organizer – AYPAL

This is a .75 FTE position that serves as the primary organizer for one of AYPAL’s two youth organizing sites. Currently in it’s 20th year, AYPAL is a youth organizing project focused on building power with Oakland Asian & Pacific Islander youth to become leaders for school reform and neighborhood change.

On Saturday May 12th AYPAL youth leaders celebrated the 20th Annual AYPAL May Arts Festival, using culture as a tool to fight against displacement in Oakland! This event took place at Lincoln Square Park, the highest used Parks and Rec facility in the city, yet the park is right in the middle of several market rate housing developments being built over the next two years. These developments have the potential to completely shift the community as we know it. #WeHere to make sure public space continues to be utilized by longtime residents.
