How YOU can attend Unity 2012!

Once again ALMA is providing FOUR sponsorships to assist ALMA members, media professionals and students to attend this summer’s Unity 2012 Convention Aug. 1-4 in Las Vegas, Nev.

To apply for the ALMA Unity 2012 scholarship, send a paragraph (150 words max) telling us why you should be considered for this sponsorship, which covers the $325 Early Bird registration fee. You must be a member of NAHJ to qualify for this rate. You are required pay for the NAHJ membership fee on your own.

Send your name, organization, job title, email address and mobile phone number along with your paragraph. The deadline to receive the Unity sponsorship application is March 7.

Winning applicants will be asked to make a presentation at a future ALMA event, sharing something you learned at the convention. We hope this provides additional learning for ALMA members who were not able to attend the convention.

Call for spring 2012 scholarship applicants

ALMA will be awarding two spring 2012 scholarships aimed at continuing college students in Arizona. Each scholarship is valued at $1,000. Students must hand in applications for the ALMA scholarship committee to review by Jan. 27, 2012. If you or a student you know might be interested, please point them to this great scholarship. ALMA has helped defray the costs of higher education for many students in the last 15 years. Help us to continue the tradition!

Juan Juarez says an ALMA scholarship made a difference in his life.

Juan Juarez gives heartfelt thanks to ALMA, sponsors for generosity

“Dear ALMA,
“I am very grateful and blessed for having the opportunity of receiving the ALMA scholarship. As of right now I am completing my first semester at Grand Canyon University,” writes Juan Juarez. Juarez is one of three students who recently received ALMA scholarships.

“I have learned to much from ALMA and I am very proud of the work that you do with so many students. It means a lot to me to be able to attend college, as it is one of my most precious dreams and goals.

“I want to THANK YOU! I want to say to you that I am very grateful for everything you do to help journalists. ALMA has made a difference in my life and I want to be able to pay it forward and help others in the future. Every act of kindness leads to a better world.

The Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be holding an informational reception Tuesday, Oct. 26 about its new Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Reception is from 6:30 to 7:30.

Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

If you didn’t attend the SB 1070 Panel Discussion that ALMA recently organized for its members and other interested media professionals, you may not have heard one of the authors of the new law tell the audience that illegal Canadians were welcome to stay in Arizona because they had money to buy foreclosed properties. One of the panelists, Terry Greene Sterling, blogged about it here. Channel 5 reporter Sarah Buduson also reported the incident.

2010 workshop video recap

On Feb. 12, an estimated 80 Arizona high school students gathered at the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication to compete in the 13th Annual High School Multimedia Journalism Workshop. In partnership with the Cronkite High School Journalism Institute, local media professionals from the Arizona Latino Media Association helped teach the high school students using the digital media tools of the Cronkite School.

The students representing 20 different high schools, covered news events centered on the H1N1 virus vaccination program and the U.S. Census. The teen journalists conducted interviews, wrote news stories, recorded TV stand-ups and created their own Web pages in the daylong workshop.
