5 Situations When Manual Focus is Better than Auto Focus

Digital Cameras present photographers with an ever increasing array of Automatic and Semi Automatic shooting modes. Most of these center around different ways of exposing your shots – however many cameras also give options for different focusing modes (auto, continuous focusing for moving subjects and manual).

It’s no wonder then that many photographers never make use of their camera and lens’ ability to focus manually. In fact this week I spoke with one DSLR owner recently who hadn’t even noticed the manual/auto focus switch on the side of his lens.

When is Manual Focus Better than Auto Focus?

Let me start by saying there is no right or wrong time to use either manual or auto focusing – both can produce great results in almost all circumstances – however there are a few times when you might find it easier to switch to manual focusing:

Macro Work

The narrow depth of field in these shots mean that you need to be incredibly precise with focusing and being just a smidgeon out or having your camera choose to focus on the wrong part of your subject can completely ruin a shot.

To use it you’ll also probably want to use a tripod to eliminate any movement of the camera which can make focusing either in manual or auto mode frustrating.

Manual focusing puts the control completely in your hands when shooting in this very precise setting.

Low Light

Manual-Focus-Low-LightShooting in dimly lit environments can be difficult for some cameras and lenses when it comes to focusing.

You’ll know when your camera is struggling in Auto mode when every time you go to take a shot the lens will whirl from one end of it’s focusing options to the other and back again before deciding on where to focus.

This can really lengthen your shooting process and make taking quick candid shots quite frustrating.

Switch to manual mode and you can quickly find your focusing point and get the shot you’re after.

Portraits

Manual-Focus-PortraitWhen shooting portraits focus needs to be precise.

The majority of your shots of people will need to have their eyes in perfect focus (although in the example to the left it’s the lips) and so switching to manual focus will give you complete control to enable this to save you from having to line up the focusing points on your camera on the eyes, press halfway down and then frame your shot.

Manual focusing in portrait work helps to ensure the viewer of the image is drawn to the part of the face that you want them to notice.

Shooting Through Glass/Wire Fences

Manual-Focus-WindowIf you’ve ever shot through anything like a window or a mess/wire fence you’ll know how cameras will often get confused on where to focus your shot.

Whether it’s shooting out of a plane window, taking a shot of an image at a museum or photographing animals through fences at the zoo – you might find your camera is confused.

Manual focusing will avoid this completely and allow you to get things just right – focusing upon the subject behind that glass or fence. If you do this in conjunction with a large aperture (which decreases depth of field) and get in close to the fence or glass you might well eliminate it completely from being noticeable in your shot.

Action Photography

Manual-Focus-SportShooting fast moving subjects (like racing cars, planes, bikes, running animals etc) can be a frustrating experience when shooting with auto focus.

Even the continuous focusing modes can get left behind or confusing if you’re not panning with your subject smoothly.

One way to overcome this is to switch to manual focusing and pre focus on a point that the subject will move through – and shooting at that point. You need to get your timing just right – but you’ll find that it’ll often give better results than relying upon auto focus modes (particularly if you shoot in continuous shooting/burst mode).

13 Tips for Improving Outdoor Portraits

There are three very simple things that improve all photography, including portraits. To this day, there is no trick I have found that replaces the need for proper exposure, white balance, and sharp focus. Today’s digital cameras have less exposure latitude than a roll of Kodak gold film. In-camera metering systems have become much more advanced, but the sensors still lack the seven ƒ-stop exposure latitude that negative film has.

1) Never select all of the focus points for portraits, pick one.

When you pick the autofocus option that allows the camera to select focus points, you are doing your portraits a terrible disservice. This feature of a camera is usually designed to pick whatever is closest to the lens and focus there. In some cases, like with my 1DS Mark III, the camera will choose a cluster of focus points and make a “best guess” based on averaging the distance between all of the chosen points. Using one focus point gives you, the photographer, ultimate control.

2) Always focus on the eyes.

The eyes are the windows to the soul, and should be the focal point of any good portrait. Not only are the eyes the most important part of a good portrait, but they are the sharpest element on the face and should be left that way. When you are shooting with a wide aperture value focused on the eyes, the lens’s bokeh will aid in softening the skin as well.

3) Shoot wide open for shallow depth of field.

There are quite a few reasons to invest in a fast lens capable of wide aperture values; the most common is for shallow depth of field. Now that you can shoot at ƒ2.8 or ƒ4 you should use it. Most fantastic natural light portraits are from wide aperture values and it is all because of the wonderful smooth background blur we call “bokeh”.

4) Never, ever, shoot a portrait at less than 50mm; try to stay at 70mm or higher.

The last thing you want to hear from a client is “Why does my head look swelled?” Any focal length below 70mm can distort your subject, however it doesn’t become very noticeable until you are below 50 MM. The compression effect of a telephoto lens will also increase the blur of bokeh. Most of my portraits are done between 120mm and 200mm.

5) Always shoot in RAW.

A thousand times these words have bellowed from my mouth, and it will surely come out a million more. Raw is an unmodified compilation of your sensors data during the time of exposure. It is your digital negative. When you shoot in JPG format, everything but what the image processor needs to make a shell representation of the image you intended to capture is stripped away. For every edit you make to a JPG, you lose more data. With RAW, you can make a vast range of edits before creating the JPG. How can this make you portrait better? Think about the last time your white balance was set incorrectly, and you tried for hours to remove the color cast only to destroy the image with every attempt. RAW would have saved you by allowing you to fix the color before opening the image for retouching.

6) Always bring a gray card or a piece of a gray card for white balance.

You got me, gray cards aren’t free. However, $5.95 US for a cardboard Kodak gray card is darn close. To avoid confusion, I am going to explain this backwards. When opening Adobe Camera Raw or any other RAW image editing application there is always a way to select a custom white balance. Usually it is an eyedropper of some kind that you can use to click on what you think is neutral gray in your image. Imagine a world where your photo shoot involved 4 locations and a total of 800 images, and all day the camera was set to Auto White Balance. That is 800 different white balance values, a post production nightmare. If, at each location, you have your subject hold the gray card on the first shot, you will save hours of work. When you open location one (200 images) in your favorite post production application, all you have to do is click the eye dropper on the gray card, select all and synchronize the rest. Precious hours have been saved. (If you plan on taking your time, it may be wise to do this once every 30 minutes or so to compensate for the changing light of day.)

7) Shoot in the shade (Avoid direct sunlight)

Direct sunlight is harsh, makes your subject squint, and creates hard directional shadows and unpredictable white balance conditions. When shooting in the shade, there are no more harsh shadows, only smooth milky shadows created by your subject’s natural features. With proper exposure and white balance, you can make these shots look amazing.

8) Shooting carefully on an overcast day.

Natures softbox is a giant blanket of clouds. A good heavy blanket of cloud cover can help you enrich your colors, and make some very smooth and pleasing shadows.

9) If you must use hot, hard, bright light…

Always try to control the direction, use some kind of reflector, and try to mimic a studio light. Putting the sun directly behind your subject isn’t a good idea, unless you are trying to make a silhouette. When the sun is at my back, I have the subject look off camera (away from the sun) and get very nice results. Another great trick is to wait for a cloud to move in front of the sun, this usually creates a very bright yet contrasted look.

10) Use an existing reflector.

For example, my guess is that about 75% of the delivery trucks on the planet are white. These big white delivery trucks can make amazing fill light reflectors as long as they weren’t painted with an off white. (A yellow tint can change the white balance in your shadows.) Picture framing outlets and craft stores always have medium to large sized pieces of foam core lying around that have been left for scrap. They are usually more than happy to part with these scraps, and if not, chances are there are pieces by the dumpster.

11) Learn the sunny ƒ16 rule.

Why? So you have a baseline for proper exposure in your mind to work with if no other tools are present. The sunny ƒ16 rule states that on a sunny day, with your aperture value set to ƒ16, your shutter speed will be the inverse of the current ISO speed. For example, if your camera is set to ISO 100, and your aperture value is ƒ16, your shutter speed will be 1/100th of a second. On a cloudy day (or when in the shade) you simply use ƒ8 instead. If you own either an incident light meter, or gray card use either for the most accurate exposure instead. (Note: the procedure for metering exposure with a gray card is not the same as a custom white balance.)
12) Bring a sheet and a few spring clamps from home.

Leave the expensive 200 thread count sheets on the bed. You already got them? Well go put them back. You know that cheap old sheet you stuck in the corner of a closet to use as a drop cloth the next time you paint? Go get it. (Another option is to buy the cheapest, lowest thread count, white top sheet you can find.) A queen size sheet is an amazing, cheap, diffuser. Sort of a sever foot soft box for the sun. Wrap an edge of the sheet around a branch or clothes line and clamp for a side light. (Anchor the bottom corners with rocks to keep it from blowing into your image.) Clamp all for corners to anything you can above your subject for an overhead light.

13) Keep the power-lines and signs out!

We have already discussed keeping your camera focused on the eyes; keep your mind focused on the image as a whole. Power lines, signs, long single blades of grass, single pieces of garbage, sometimes even trees can be serious distractions from the overall focus of the image… The person you are photographing.

Last, and most important, have a great time shooting, enjoy what you’re doing and it will show in your work, and the expression of your subject.

A few Bonus Tips on Shooting on Cloudy Days

Clouds are wonderful. They create a giant blanket of natural sunlight diffusion to make your images rich and powerful. The clouds can fool your mind in ways you can’t imagine, much like your mind corrects for the natural white balance throughout the day.

When you are shooting on an overcast day, custom white balance is especially important. Every day is completely different for color, and that color depends on two things. First, the time of day, as most people understand white balance and how it changes throughout the day. Second, you have to account for all of the wonderful things that light has to pass through before it hits your subject.

Pollution changes the color of the light from minute to minute even if your eyes don’t see it, your camera does. On a cloudy day, pollution particles are being carried around in the sky by little tiny prisms; water droplets. Now your sunlight is passing through nature’s prism and reflecting off of pollution particles in infinite directions.

Don’t forget to white balance with that custom, tricked out, six dollar piece of cardboard, your Kodak gray card.

The ultimate secret to shooting on a cloudy day is a compass. (You either tipped your head like a confused Chihuahua or just had an epiphany.) I am an experienced, internationally published photographer, and rarely can I see where the sun is coming from on an overcast day. The light isn’t omnipresent; it’s just diffused, softened and scattered. Sunlight on a cloudy day is still directional, and your subject still has a dark side. Use a compass to find out where the sun is, put it at your back and shoot like mad. Never again will you look at an image after and wonder why the sky is blown out when it was so cloudy, or why the clouds look great but your subject is dark.

Google Wallet can now add any credit card or debit card

Google Wallet promised to replace physical wallets with a virtual wallet that can be accessed from your Android phone. However, the momentum has been slow in the U.S. because carriers are trying their best to avoid using it on the handsets they sell, because they are preparing their own competing solution called Isis. The only carriers in the U.S. that have been friendly to Google Wallet are Sprint and Virgin Mobile, which have adopted a total of six Google Wallet-enabled phones. The Nexus 7 tablet also comes with Google Wallet support.

Google Wallet has also experienced some security issues initially, and Verizon has even claimed that the reason they are not embracing it is because it’s not secure enough – although I still think the main reason for rejecting it was its own payment system, Isis.

Today, Google is announcing a new version of Google Wallet, one that is powered by the cloud and dramatically increases security by keeping your credit card information stored only on Google’s highly secure servers instead of your own device. The phones will be getting a virtual card number that is tied to the real one, and will be stored in the secure area of your phone. This will help ensure that the transaction process works smoothly, but without compromising on security.
Google Wallet has always required a PIN so only you can have access to it. But now, in case your phone is stolen or lost, you’ll be able to remotely disable the Google Wallet functionality on that device. In such a scenario, no more transactions will be authorized from that handset.

One of the biggest improvements in Google Wallet is that you can now add any credit card or debit card from various providers including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. To save a card’s information to Google Wallet you’ll have to use the mobile app or the official website to complete the form and sign-up.

Android Jelly Bean Face Unlock ‘liveness’ check easily hacked with photo editing

Google improves Face Unlock on Jelly Bean by requiring users to blink, but even this can easily be spoofed through image editing.

When Android Ice Cream Sandwich was released, one of the much-touted features was Face Unlock, which supposedly made the smartphone more friendly in terms of user experience. The phone unlocks just by “seeing” the owner’s face. Unfortunately, this was found to be insecure, as the Face Unlock feature recognized even static photos of the owner.

With profile pictures easy to access through social networks, Face Unlock could easily be circumvented, which defeats the purpose of securing the lock screen in the first place.

Jelly Bean adds another layer of security, which supposedly ensures “liveness” by checking whether the person is actually moving. For this purpose, the software checks for a blink after the initial scan. After you blink, off goes your phone’s lock screen.

Again, though, this system has been easily circumvented. This time, it will require a bit of photo editing on the hacker’s part. Because the user is supposed to blink to prove he or she is the real deal, Jelly Bean will have to be fooled to think that a blink has been done with simple photo editing.

    First, find a fairly recent image of the smartphone or tablet owner. Facebook should be a great source.
    Using photo editing software, paint over the eyes with the same color as the surrounding skin tone.
    Flash the photos alternately to simulate a blink.

It seems Jelly Bean cannot differentiate between a real blink and one that involves some image editing. While we wait for Google to fix these issues, the Face Unlock feature is likely to remain just a novelty on Android, and we don’t recommend using it if you keep sensitive data on your mobile device. Use a PIN, password or pattern unlock instead. And if it interests you, other platforms also have innovative ways of securing lock screens, such as Windows 8′s picture password feature. It’s also rumored that Apple may include fingerprint scanning on iOS devices, after it acquired AuthenTec in July.

Dolphin Browser HD reaches version 8.7, changes name to “Dolphin Browser”

The Dolphin Browser has been one of Android’s users favorite third-party browsers. Formerly known as Dolphin Browser HD, it’s now changing its name to Dolphin Browser in an effort to simplify things. The change starts with version 8.7 and it brings a series of improvements as well.

The new version includes a cleaner address bar that gives more search suggestions, a better interface for tablets, and “larger space for big thumbs and small keypads.” The new update also allows for easier bookmark management and deletion of unwanted bookmarks, a shortcut directly to the Sonar, as well as ”stability and performance improvements.”

The launch of Chrome for Android must be seen as a threat for the Dolphin Browser team, especially now that Chrome will be the default browser on Android starting with the Jelly Bean version. Over 300 million users use Chrome on the desktop, and Chrome for Android is the only Android browser that can sync with your desktop Chrome tabs, and that’s a big plus for many users.

Things might get harder from here for the Dolphin Browser team, but that’s why they need to keep up with the innovations, and create compelling features for users to chose the Dolphin Browser over Chrome, Firefox or other Android browsers.

Apple removes Youtube.app from iOS 6 in beta 4

iOS 6 beta 4 came with a huge surprise for everyone. It appears like Apple has finally decided to remove all Google properties from stock iOS as the official Youtube.app is not to be found in the latest beta released to developers by Apple. It is too early to predict anything as things could change in the final version of iOS. Apple also removed the official Google Maps app and replaced it with it’s own Maps app that features maps from services Apple bought in the last few years. Interestingly though Apple has not given an alternative to the dedicated Youtube app, and if Apple is really going to remove it from iOS then the only way users will be able to watch Youtube videos is through Safari browser, or third party apps downloadable from the App Store.

One way of looking towards it could be that Apple has removed the Youtube app because it wants users to watch Youtube videos in HTML5 through Safari. The app that has been removed was quite outdated, as it wasn’t updated much by Apple/Google since it was first launched and HTML5 has become more mainstream than it was before.

Update: It seems like TheVerge has heard from Apple that Youtube app won’t be included in iOS 6 and Google is working on it’s own standalone app. That app of course will be released in the App Store after iOS 6 is available for download for everyone.

Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.

Finally, the Canon 5D mark III has been announced. This camera is a professional grade digital SLR camera designed for professional or amateur photographers who desire a relatively mild but the camera has a high quality.

Canon 5D mark III will challenge the Nikon D800 was announced some time ago. At first glance, 5D mark III looks more balanced than the Nikon D800. New Features of Google

Google introduces new features in his search engines, including Voice Search, Instant Search by Images and Pages. What is the third function of this feature?

Quoted from Cnet, on Thursday (6/16/2011), presented three new features that Google, of course, for even easier for users to search on the internet.
For example, the Voice Search. Features that previously were already present in mobile devices is now extended also in desktop computers.
By using the Chrome browser, Google's search engine users can click the microphone icon in the upper right corner search box and 'talk' to computers, what they want to look for, so they do not have to type a word or phrase.
The second feature is a Search by Image. This feature allows users to upload photos to Google Image Search and 'asked' to Google, the picture does it. Cool right?

If Voice Search should use the Chrome browser, Google promised Search by Image will be used also in Firefox. This feature will be available to Google users around the world in 40 languages.

In order for faster internet search, Google had a Google Instant who can guess what you're looking for before finished typing keywordnya. Well, now comes another new feature called Google Instant Pages. This feature will get the top results for you.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, again related to a controversial remark on the social networking service. Last year, he called privacy no longer so important. This time, he proposed the abolition of restrictions on the age of Facebook users. That is, infants who are still red was allowed to create an account on Facebook.
